APPENDIX TO BOOK IV 第四篇補遺

 The two following accounts are subjoined, in order to illustrate and confirm what is said in the fifth chapter of the fourth book, concerning the Tonnage Bounty to the Whit-herring Fishery. 次の二つの説明は、第四篇第五章で述べたニシン漁業に対するトン数補助金について説明と確認をするために添付する。
The reader, I believe, may depend upon the accuracy of both accounts. 読者は、両方の説明の正確さに依存してよいと思う。

 An account of Busses fitted out in Scotland for eleven Years, with the Number of empty Barrels carried out, and the Number of Barrels of Herrings caught; 11年間にスコットランドで装備されたバスの説明、運び出された空き樽の数、捕獲されたニシンの樽の数

 Though the loss of duties upon herrings exported cannot, perhaps, properly be considered as bounty, that upon herrings entered for home consumption certainly may. 輸出されるニシンに対する関税の損失は、おそらく、適切に奨励金とは見なされないかもしれないが、国内消費用に輸入されるニシンに対する関税の損失は、確かにそう見なされるかもしれない。

 An account of the Quantity of Foreign Salt imported into Scotland, and of Scotch Salt delivered Duty-free from the Works there, for the Fishery, from the 5th. of April 1771 to the 5th. of April 1782 with the Medium of both for one Year. スコットランドに輸入された外国塩の量と、1771年4月5日から1782年4月5日までの漁業用にスコットランドの塩田から無税で出荷されたスコットランド塩の量と、その両方の1年間の平均。

 It is to be observed, that the bushel of foreign salt weighs 48lbs., that of British weighs 56lbs. only. 外国産塩のブッシェルは48ポンド、イギリス産塩のブッシェルは56ポンドしかないことに注意すべきである。
