CHAPTER VI: OF THE COMPONENT PART OF THE PRICE OF COMMODITIES.

 In that early and rude state of society which precedes both the accumulation of stock and the appropriation of land, the proportion between the quantities of labour necessary for acquiring different objects, seems to be the only circumstance which can afford any rule for exchanging them for one another.
early (初期の) [形] happening or done before the usual or expected time
precede (先立つ) [動] come before in time
accumulation (蓄積) [名] the action or process of accumulating something
stock (資本) [名] the goods or money that a business has
appropriation (私有化) [名] the action of taking something for one's own use
If among a nation of hunters, for example, it usually costs twice the labour to kill a beaver which it does to kill a deer, one beaver should naturally exchange for or be worth two deer.
usually (通常) [副] normally; generally
kill (殺す) [動] cause the death of
beaver (ビーバー) [名] a large rodent that builds dams
deer (鹿) [名] a large animal with hooves that lives in the forest
be worth (価値がある) [動] have a particular value
It is natural that what is usually the produce of two days or two hours labour, should be worth double of what is usually the produce of one day’s or one hour’s labour.
two days (二日間) [名] a period of two days
one day (一日) [名] a period of one day
one hour (一時間) [名] a period of one hour

 If the one species of labour should be more severe than the other, some allowance will naturally be made for this superior hardship;
one species of labour (一方の労働) [名] one kind of work
more severe (より過酷である) [形] more serious or intense
the other (他方) [名] the other one
some allowance (何らかの割増し) [名] some extra money
superior hardship (より過酷な労働) [名] more severe work
and the produce of one hour’s labour in the one way may frequently exchange for that of two hour’s labour in the other.
one hour (1時間) [名] a period of time equal to 60 minutes

 Or if the one species of labour requires an uncommon degree of dexterity and ingenuity, the esteem which men have for such talents, will naturally give a value to their produce, superior to what would be due to the time employed about it.
uncommon degree (並外れた程度) [名] an unusual amount
esteem (尊敬) [名] a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements
naturally (当然のことながら) [副] as may be expected
give a value (価値を与える) [動] assign a certain worth to
Such talents can seldom be acquired but in consequence of long application, and the superior value of their produce may frequently be no more than a reasonable compensation for the time and labour which must be spent in acquiring them.
no more than (~にすぎない) [副] only; merely
reasonable (合理的な) [形] based on or acting according to reason or logic
compensation (報酬) [名] something, typically money, awarded to someone as a recompense for loss, injury, or suffering
In the advanced state of society, allowances of this kind, for superior hardship and superior skill, are commonly made in the wages of labour;
advanced state (進歩した状態) [名] a state of being advanced
allowance (手当) [名] a sum of money paid regularly to a person, usually to help them pay for the things that they need
superior skill (より優れた技能) [名] a skill that is greater than average
wage (賃金) [名] a fixed regular payment made by an employer to an employee, especially to a manual or unskilled worker
and something of the same kind must probably have taken place in its earliest and rudest period.
have taken place (起こった) [動] have happened
its (その) [限] belonging to or connected with a person or thing previously mentioned or easily identified
earliest (最も初期の) [形] happening or done before the usual or expected time
rudest (最も未開の) [形] lacking refinement, good manners, or good taste

 In this state of things, the whole produce of labour belongs to the labourer;
and the quantity of labour commonly employed in acquiring or producing any commodity, is the only circumstance which can regulate the quantity of labour which it ought commonly to purchase, command, or exchange for.
employ (用いる) [動] use
ought (する必要がある) [助] should

 As soon as stock has accumulated in the hands of particular persons, some of them will naturally employ it in setting to work industrious people, whom they will supply with materials and subsistence, in order to make a profit by the sale of their work, or by what their labour adds to the value of the materials.
as soon as (とすぐに) [接] at the moment that
naturally (当然のことである) [副] in a way that is expected or normal
setting to work (働かせるために) [動] start working

make a profit (利益を得る) [動] gain money
sale (販売) [名] the exchange of goods or services for money
add to (加える) [動] increase the amount or number of
In exchanging the complete manufacture either for money, for labour, or for other goods, over and above what may be sufficient to pay the price of the materials, and the wages of the workmen, something must be given for the profits of the undertaker of the work, who hazards his stock in this adventure.
other (その他の) [形] not the same as the one or ones already mentioned or implied
over and above (を超えて) [前] in addition to
undertaker (事業主) [名] a person who undertakes a business or enterprise
adventure (冒険) [名] an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity
The value which the workmen add to the materials, therefore, resolves itself in this case into two parts, of which the one pays their wages, the other the profits of their employer upon the whole stock of materials and wages which he advanced.
add (加える) [動] join or combine two or more things together
resolve (分かれる) [動] separate into parts or components
employer (雇用主) [名] a person or organization that employs people
advance (前払いする) [動] pay or give something before it is due
He could have no interest to employ them, unless he expected from the sale of their work something more than what was sufficient to replace his stock to him;
have no interest (関心を持つことができない) [動] not be interested in
something more (十分なもの以上) [名] an additional amount or thing
replace (回収する) [動] take the place of
and he could have no interest to employ a great stock rather than a small one, unless his profits were to bear some proportion to the extent of his stock.
capital (資本) [名] wealth in the form of money or other assets owned by a person or organization or available for a purpose such as starting a company or investing

 The profits of stock, it may perhaps be thought, are only a different name for the wages of a particular sort of labour, the labour of inspection and direction.
profit (利潤) [名] the financial gain a company makes after deducting all costs from its revenue
be thought (考えられている) [動] be of the opinion that
inspection (監督) [名] the action or process of inspecting something

They are, however, altogether different, are regulated by quite different principles, and bear no proportion to the quantity, the hardship, or the ingenuity of this supposed labour of inspection and direction.
bear (比例する) [動] have a particular relationship to
They are regulated altogether by the value of the stock employed, and are greater or smaller in proportion to the extent of this stock.
Let us suppose, for example, that in some particular place, where the common annual profits of manufacturing stock are ten per cent.
ten (10) [名] the cardinal number that is the sum of nine and one
there are two different manufactures, in each of which twenty workmen are employed, at the rate of fifteen pounds a year each, or at the expense of three hundred a-year in each manufactory.
there are (ある) [動] exist
Let us suppose, too, that the coarse materials annually wrought up in the one cost only seven hundred pounds, while the finer materials in the other cost seven thousand.
let us suppose (仮定しよう) [動] assume that something is true for the sake of argument
annually (年間) [副] once a year
wrought (加工される) [動] past participle of work
seven hundred pounds (七百ポンド) [名] a unit of currency in the United Kingdom
finer (より上質な) [形] of high quality
seven thousand (七千) [名] a number
The capital annually employed in the one will, in this case, amount only to one thousand pounds;
amount (わずか) [名] a quantity of something
whereas that employed in the other will amount to seven thousand three hundred pounds.
whereas (一方) [接] on the other hand
that (その) [限] the one mentioned before
amount to (にのぼる) [動] be equal to or the same as
At the rate of ten per cent.
at the rate of (の割合で) [前] in proportion to
therefore, the undertaker of the one will expect a yearly profit of about one hundred pounds only;
yearly (年間) [形] happening or done once a year
while that of the other will expect about seven hundred and thirty pounds.
while (一方) [接] during the time that
expect (期待できる) [動] regard something as likely to happen or be the case
seven hundred and thirty pounds (七百三十ポンド) [名] a unit of weight equal to 16 ounces or 7000 grains
But though their profits are so very different, their labour of inspection and direction may be either altogether or very nearly the same.
In many great works, almost the whole labour of this kind is committed to some principal clerk.
work (工場) [名] a place where people work, especially a factory or other industrial establishment
commit (委ねる) [動] do or perform
clerk (事務員) [名] an office worker who keeps records, does calculations, and writes letters
His wages properly express the value of this labour of inspection and direction.
properly (適切に) [副] in a proper manner
Though in settling them some regard is had commonly, not only to his labour and skill, but to the trust which is reposed in him, yet they never bear any regular proportion to the capital of which he oversees the management;
settle (決める) [動] decide or agree on
trust (信頼) [名] a firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something
repose (寄せる) [動] place
oversee (管理する) [動] supervise
and the owner of this capital, though he is thus discharged of almost all labour, still expects that his profit should bear a regular proportion to his capital.
discharge (解放される) [動] to release someone from a duty, responsibility, or obligation
In the price of commodities, therefore, the profits of stock constitute a component part altogether different from the wages of labour, and regulated by quite different principles.
constitute (形成する) [動] be or form a part of
component (構成要素) [名] a part or element of a larger whole

 In this state of things, the whole produce of labour does not always belong to the labourer.
belong (帰属する) [動] be a member of or have a connection with
He must in most cases share it with the owner of the stock which employs him.
in most cases (ほとんどの場合) [副] usually; more often than not
share (分け合う) [動] have or use something in common with others
Neither is the quantity of labour commonly employed in acquiring or producing any commodity, the only circumstance which can regulate the quantity which it ought commonly to purchase, command or exchange for.
An additional quantity, it is evident, must be due for the profits of the stock which advanced the wages and furnished the materials of that labour.
additional (追加の) [形] added, extra, or supplementary
evident (明らかな) [形] obvious to the eye or mind
furnish (提供する) [動] supply or provide (something)

 As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for its natural produce.
as soon as (~するとすぐに) [接] immediately after
private property (私有財産) [名] property owned by a private individual or group
landlord (地主) [名] a person who owns land or property and rents it out to others

The wood of the forest, the grass of the field, and all the natural fruits of the earth, which, when land was in common, cost the labourer only the trouble of gathering them, come, even to him, to have an additional price fixed upon them.
wood (木) [名] the hard fibrous substance that forms the main part of a tree

pay for (支払う) [動] give money in exchange for
licence (許可証) [名] a permit from an authority to own or use something
give up (差し出す) [動] hand over
This portion, or, what comes to the same thing, the price of this portion, constitutes the rent of land, and in the price of the greater part of commodities, makes a third component part.
portion (部分) [名] a part of a whole
constitute (構成する) [動] be a part of
component (構成) [名] a part of something larger

 The real value of all the different component parts of price, it must be observed, is measured by the quantity of labour which they can, each of them, purchase or command.
component part (構成部分) [名] a part of something
must be observed (注意しなければならない) [動] must be noticed
Labour measures the value, not only of that part of price which resolves itself into labour, but of that which resolves itself into rent, and of that which resolves itself into profit.
resolve (分解される) [動] find a solution to (a problem, question, or dispute)

 In every society, the price of every commodity finally resolves itself into some one or other, or all of those three parts;
finally (最終的に) [副] after a long time, or after many problems
itself (それ自体) [代] used to emphasize the identity of the subject
and in every improved society, all the three enter, more or less, as component parts, into the price of the far greater part of commodities.
in (において) [前] expressing the situation of something that is or appears to be inside something else
enter (組み込まれている) [動] go or come in
into (に) [前] expressing movement or action with the result that someone or something ends up in a place or situation

 In the price of corn, for example, one part pays the rent of the landlord, another pays the wages or maintenance of the labourers and labouring cattle employed in producing it, and the third pays the profit of the farmer.
These three parts seem either immediately or ultimately to make up the whole price of corn.
immediately (直接的に) [副] without delay or lapse of time
ultimately (最終的に) [副] finally
A fourth part, it may perhaps be thought is necessary for replacing the stock of the farmer, or for compensating the wear and tear of his labouring cattle, and other instruments of husbandry.
compensate (補償する) [動] make up for
wear and tear (損耗) [名] damage that happens to something through normal use
labouring cattle (労働牛) [名] cattle used for work
husbandry (農業) [名] the science or practice of farming
But it must be considered, that the price of any instrument of husbandry, such as a labouring horse, is itself made up of the same time parts;
labouring horse (農耕馬) [名] a horse used for farming
the rent of the land upon which he is reared, the labour of tending and rearing him, and the profits of the farmer, who advances both the rent of this land, and the wages of this labour.
rear (育てる) [動] bring up
Though the price of the corn, therefore, may pay the price as well as the maintenance of the horse, the whole price still resolves itself, either immediately or ultimately, into the same three parts of rent, labour, and profit.
immediately (直接的) [副] at once; without delay

 In the price of flour or meal, we must add to the price of the corn, the profits of the miller, and the wages of his servants;

and in the price of both, the labour of transporting the corn from the house of the farmer to that of the miller, and from that of the miller to that of the baker, together with the profits of those who advance the wages of that labour.

 The price of flax resolves itself into the same three parts as that of corn.
In the price of linen we must add to this price the wages of the flax-dresser, of the spinner, of the weaver, of the bleacher, etc.
flax-dresser (亜麻の梳毛工) [名] a person who prepares flax for spinning
together with the profits of their respective employers.
together with (共に) [副] in addition to
employer (雇用者) [名] a person that employs people

 As any particular commodity comes to be more manufactured, that part of the price which resolves itself into wages and profit, comes to be greater in proportion to that which resolves itself into rent.
manufactured (製造される) [動] make or produce by industrial or other processes
In the progress of the manufacture, not only the number of profits increase, but every subsequent profit is greater than the foregoing;
in the progress of (の進歩に伴い) [前] as something progresses
subsequent (その後の) [形] coming after something in time; following
is greater than (よりも大きい) [動] be larger or greater than
the foregoing (前述の) [形] previously mentioned
because the capital from which it is derived must always be greater.
because (なぜなら) [接] for the reason that
great (大きい) [形] of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above average
The capital which employs the weavers, for example, must be greater than that which employs the spinners;
because it not only replaces that capital with its profits, but pays, besides, the wages of the weavers: and the profits must always bear some proportion to the capital.

 In the most improved societies, however, there are always a few commodities of which the price resolves itself into two parts only: the wages of labour, and the profits of stock;
In the most improved societies (最も進歩した社会では) [名] in the most advanced societies

and the profits of stock (資本の利潤) [名] and the profits of capital
and a still smaller number, in which it consists altogether in the wages of labour.
In the price of sea-fish, for example, one part pays the labour of the fisherman, and the other the profits of the capital employed in the fishery.
sea-fish (海産魚) [名] a fish that lives in the sea
one part (一部) [名] a portion of a whole
fisherman (漁師) [名] a person engaged in fishing
Rent very seldom makes any part of it, though it does sometimes, as I shall shew hereafter.
very seldom (めったにない) [副] not often; rarely
as (ように) [接] in the way that
shall (する) [助] expressing a strong intention or determination
shew (述べる) [動] to make known; to exhibit; to display

A salmon fishery pays a rent;
salmon (サケ) [名] a large edible fish that is a popular food
and rent, though it cannot well be called the rent of land, makes a part of the price of a salmon, as well as wares and profit.
In some parts of Scotland, a few poor people make a trade of gathering, along the sea-shore, those little variegated stones commonly known by the name of Scotch pebbles.

The price which is paid to them by the stone-cutter, is altogether the wages of their labour;
stone-cutter (石工) [名] a person who cuts stone
neither rent nor profit makes an part of it.

 But the whole price of any commodity must still finally resolve itself into some one or other or all of those three parts;
resolve (分解する) [動] find a solution to
as whatever part of it remains after paying the rent of the land, and the price of the whole labour employed in raising, manufacturing, and bringing it to market, must necessarily be profit to somebody.
raise (育てる) [動] bring up (a child)
manufacture (製造する) [動] make (something) on a large scale using machinery

every particular commodity (個々の商品) [名] a good or service that is produced and sold in the market
separately (個別に) [副] as a separate entity
