OWING to the cant of the vessel, the masts hung far out over the water, and from my perch on the cross-trees I had nothing below me but the surface of the bay.	船が傾いているので、マストは水の上に大きく張り出し、クロスツリーに腰掛けた私の下には湾の表面しかなかった。
Hands, who was not so far up, was in consequence nearer to the ship and fell between me and the bulwarks.	ハンズはそこまで高く登っていなかったため、船に近く、私と防波堤の間に落ちた。

The evening breeze had sprung up, and though it was well warded off by the hill with the two peaks upon the east, the cordage had begun to sing a little softly to itself and the idle sails to rattle to and fro.	夕方のそよ風が吹き始め、東の二つの峰のある丘によく守られていたにもかかわらず、索具が少しずつ静かに歌い始め、使われていない帆が前後に揺れ始めた。

I began to see a danger to the ship.	私は船に危険が迫っていることに気づき始めた。

Gradually the night fell blacker;	次第に夜は暗くなり、

I stole round by the eastern end, keeping close in shadow, and at a convenient place, where the darkness was thickest, crossed the palisade.

To make assurance surer, I got upon my hands and knees and crawled, without a sound, towards the corner of the house.	念には念を入れて、私は四つん這いになって、音を立てずに家の角に向かって這っていった。
As I drew nearer, my heart was suddenly and greatly lightened.	近づいていくと、私の心は突然、とても軽くなった。

In the meantime, there was no doubt of one thing;	その間、一つのことに疑いはなかった。

With my arms before me I walked steadily in.	私は腕を前に突き出し、ゆっくりと中に入った。

And then, all of a sudden, a shrill voice broke forth out of the darkness:

It was she whom I had heard pecking at a piece of bark;	私が木の皮をつついている音を聞いたのは彼女だったのだ。
it was she, keeping better watch than any human being, who thus announced my arrival with her wearisome refrain.	彼女はどんな人間よりもよく見張りをしていて、私の到着を退屈な繰り返しで告げたのだった。

I had no time left me to recover.	私には回復する時間も残されていなかった。
At the sharp, clipping tone of the parrot, the sleepers awoke and sprang up;	オウムの鋭く、早口の声で、眠っていた者たちは目を覚まし、飛び起きた。
and with a mighty oath, the voice of Silver cried:—	そして、シルバーの声が、激しい誓いとともに叫んだ。

“Who goes?”

I turned to run, struck violently against one person, recoiled, and ran full into the arms of a second, who for his part closed upon and held me tight.

“Bring a torch, Dick,” said Silver when my capture was thus assured.

And one of the men left the log-house, and presently returned with a lighted brand.
