第31章: 結婚式の計画

As always, Mary’s going away made an emptiness in the house.	いつものように、メアリーが去ると家は空虚になった。
The next morning Ma said briskly, “We will get at your sewing now, Laura.	翌朝、ママはきびきびと言った。「ローラ、今からお裁縫に取り掛かろう。
Busy hands are a great help to being cheerful.”	忙しく手を動かすことは元気でいるためにとても役立つよ」

So Laura brought the muslins, Ma cut them out, and the airy sitting room filled with the sewing machine’s hum and the busy cheerfulness of Ma’s and Laura’s sewing together.

そこでローラはモスリンを持ち出し、ママが裁断し、風通しの良い居間はミシンの音とママとローラが一緒に裁縫する忙しくも陽気な雰囲気で満たされた。

“I have an idea for making the sheets,” said Laura.	「シーツを作るアイデアがあるよ」とローラは言った。
“I’m not going to sew those long seams down the middle with over-and-over stitch by hand.	「あの長い縫い目を真ん中に手でかがり縫いするつもりはないよ。
If I lap the edges flat and sew with the machine down the center, I do believe they’ll be smooth enough and even more serviceable.”	端を平らに重ねて真ん中をミシンで縫えば、十分に滑らかでもっと使いやすくなると思うよ」

“It may well be,” said Ma.	「そうかもしれないよね」とママは言った。
“Our grandmothers would turn in their graves, but after all, these are modern times.”	「おばあちゃんたちは墓の中で寝返りを打つだろうけど、結局のところ、今は現代なのよ」

All the white sewing was quickly done on the machine.	白い布の縫い物はすべてミシンで素早く仕上がった。
Laura brought out the dozens of yards of white thread lace that she had knitted and crocheted, and like magic the machine’s flashing needle stitched the lace edgings to the open ends of the pillow cases, the throats and wrists of the high-necked, long-sleeved nightgowns, the necks and armholes of the chemises, and the leg-bands of the drawers.	ローラは編み物やかぎ針編みで作った何十ヤードもの白いレースを取り出し、ミシンの針が魔法のように素早く動いて、枕カバーの開いた端、ハイネックの長袖のネグリジェの首回りと袖口、シュミーズの首回りと袖ぐり、ドロワーズ(ズボン下)の脚のバンドにレースの縁取りを縫い付けた。

Busily working with the white goods, Ma and Laura discussed Laura’s dresses.

白い布で忙しく作業をしながら、ママとローラはローラのドレスについて話し合った。

“My brown poplin openwork dress is good as new,” Laura said.	「私の茶色のポプリンの透かし模様のドレスは新品同様よ」とローラは言った。
“And my pink sprigged lawn is new.	「それに私のピンクの小花柄のローンは新品よ。
What more do I need?”	これ以上何が必要かしら?」

“You need a black dress,” Ma answered decisively.	「黒いドレスが必要よ」とママは断言した。
“I think every woman should have one nice black dress.	「女性は誰でも素敵な黒いドレスを1着は持っているべきだと思うよ。
We’d better go to town Saturday and get the goods.	土曜日に町に行って、布を買った方がいいよね。
A cashmere, I think.	カシミアがいいと思うよ。
Cashmere wears well, and it is always dressy for all but the very hottest days of summer.	カシミアは着心地がいいし、夏の一番暑い日以外はいつでもおしゃれよ。
Then when that dress is out of the way, you must get something pretty for your wedding.”	そのドレスが完成したら、結婚式のために何か素敵なものを買わなくちゃね」

“There will be plenty of time,” Laura said.	「時間は十分にあるよ」ローラは言った。
In the rush of summer work, Almanzo had little time to work on the house.	夏の忙しさで、アルマンゾは家を建てる時間がほとんどなかった。
He had taken Ma and Laura one Sunday to see its skeleton of studding standing by the piles of lumber, back from the road behind the grove of little sapling trees.	ある日曜日、彼はママとローラを連れて、小さな苗木の木立の背後の道から離れた材木の山のそばに立っている骨組みを見に行った。

There were to be three rooms, the large room, a bedroom, and a pantry, with a lean-to over the back door besides.	部屋は3つ、大きな部屋、寝室、食器棚があり、それに加えて裏口の上に片流れ屋根があった。
But after Laura had seen how these were planned, Almanzo did not take her to look at the house again.	しかし、ローラがこれらの計画を見てしまったので、アルマンゾは彼女を連れて家を見に行くことはなかった。

So they made their long Sunday drives to the twin lakes or to Spirit Lake and beyond.

It was humming steadily, late that afternoon, and Laura was basting the pieces of cambric lining to the cashmere pieces, when she looked up from her work and saw Almanzo driving up to the house.	その日の午後遅く、ミシンは着々と音を立てていた。ローラはカシミヤの部分にカンブリックの裏地を仮縫いしていたが、ふと顔を上げると、アルマンゾが馬車で家に向かってくるのが見えた。

She hurried to the door, and he said, “Come for a little drive.	彼女は急いでドアに向かうと、彼は「ちょっとドライブに行こう。
I want to talk to you.”	話したいことがあるんだ」と言った。

Putting on her sunbonnet, Laura went with him.

“What is it?” she asked as Barnum and Skip trotted away.

“Do you want a big wedding?”	「盛大な結婚式がしたいの?」

She looked at him in amazement, that he should have come to ask her that, when they would see each other next Sunday.	彼女は驚いて彼を見た、来週の日曜日に会うのに、彼がそれを聞きに来たのは驚きだった。
“Why do you ask?” she inquired.	「どうして?」と彼女は尋ねた。

“Oh, no!” Laura said.

Laura could not help laughing.	ローラは笑わずにはいられなかった。
“This is a calico work dress.	「これはカリコの作業着よ。
I couldn’t possibly!”	とても無理!」
Then she sobered, “But Ma and I are making one that I could wear.”	それから彼女は真面目な顔で「でもママと私は私が着られるものを作っているよ」と言った。

“Then will you, say the last of this week?”

「では今週の終わりにでもどう?」

Laura was silent again.	ローラは再び黙った。
Then she summoned all her courage and said, “Almanzo, I must ask you something.	それから彼女は勇気を振り絞って言った。「アルマンゾ、あなたに聞きたいことがあるの。
Do you want me to promise to obey you?”	あなたに従うと約束してほしいの?」

“Well, I am not going to say I will obey you,” said Laura.

“Are you for woman’s rights, like Eliza?”	「あなたはイライザみたいに女性の権利を支持するの?」
Almanzo asked in surprise.	アルマンゾは驚いて尋ねた。

“No,” Laura replied.	「いいえ」とローラは答えた。
“I do not want to vote.	「私は投票したくないよ。
But I can not make a promise that I will not keep, and, Almanzo, even if I tried, I do not think I could obey anybody against my better judgment.”	でも、守れない約束はできないよ、それに、アルマンゾ、たとえ私が努力したとしても、自分の判断に反して誰かに従うことができるとは思わないよ。」

“I’d never expect you to,” he told her.	「君がそうするなんて期待してないよ」と彼は彼女に言った。
“And there will be no difficulty about the ceremony, because Reverend Brown does not believe in using the word ‘obey.’ ”	「それに、式については問題はないよ、ブラウン牧師は「従う」という言葉を使うことを信じていないからね。」

“He doesn’t! Are you sure?”	「彼はそうしないの? 確か?」
Laura had never been so surprised and so relieved, all at once.	ローラは、一度にこんなに驚き、こんなに安心したことはなかった。

“He feels very strongly about it,” Almanzo said.	「彼はそれをとても強く感じているんだ」とアルマンゾは言った。
“I have heard him arguing for hours and quoting Bible texts against St. Paul, on that subject.	「私は彼がその話題について何時間も議論し、聖パウロに対して聖書のテキストを引用しているのを聞いたことがある。

“Yes, if it is the only way to escape a big wedding,” said Laura, “I will be ready the last of this week or the first of next, whichever you say.”

“If I can get the house finished, we’ll say the last of this week,” Almanzo considered.	「家を完成させることができれば、今週の終わりにしよう」とアルマンゾは考えた。
“If not, it will have to be next week.	「できなければ、来週にするしかない。
Let’s say when the house is finished we will just drive to Reverend Brown’s and be married quietly without any fuss.	家が完成したら、ブラウン牧師のところまで馬車で行って、大騒ぎせずに静かに結婚式を挙げよう。
I’ll take you home now and I may have time to get in a few more licks on the house yet tonight.”	君を家まで送って、今夜も家をもう少し仕上げる時間があるかもしれない」

At home again, Laura hesitated to tell of the plan.	家に戻ると、ローラはその計画について話すのをためらった。
She felt that Ma would think the haste unseemly.	ママは急ぐのは見苦しいと思うだろうと感じた。
Ma might say, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure.”	ママは「急いで結婚すると、後悔する」と言うかもしれない。
Yet they were not really marrying in haste.	それでも、彼らは本当に急いで結婚するわけではない。
They had been going together for three years.	彼らは3年間付き合っていた。

It was not until suppertime that Laura found courage to say that she and Almanzo had planned to be married so soon.

ローラは夕食時まで、自分とアルマンゾがそんなに早く結婚する予定だと言う勇気が出なかった。

“We can’t possibly get you a wedding dress made,” Ma objected.

「ウェディングドレスを用意することはできないよ」とママは反対した。

“We can finish the black cashmere and I will wear that,” Laura answered.

「黒のカシミヤを仕上げれば、それを着るよ」とローラは答えた。

“I do not like to think of your being married in black,” said Ma.	「あなたが黒い服を着て結婚するなんて考えたくないよ」とママは言った。
“You know they say, ‘Married in black, you’ll wish yourself back.’ ”	「『黒い服を着て結婚すると、後悔する』って言うのよ」

“It will be new. I will wear my old sage-green poke bonnet with the blue silk lining, and borrow your little square gold pin with the strawberry in it, so I’ll be wearing something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue,” Laura said cheerfully.

「新品になるよ。私の古いセージグリーンのポケボンネットに青い絹の裏地をつけて、イチゴのついた小さな四角い金のピンを借りるから、古いものと新しいもの、借りたものと青いものを身につけることになるよ」とローラは陽気に言った。

“I don’t suppose there’s any truth in these old sayings,” Ma consented.

「こんな古い言い伝えに真実なんてないと思うよ」とママは同意した。

Pa said, “I think it is a sensible thing to do.	パパは「それは賢明なことだと思う。
You and Almanzo show good judgment.”	君とアルマンゾは良い判断をした」と言った。

But Ma was not wholly satisfied yet.	しかし、ママはまだ完全には満足していなかった。
“Let Reverend Brown come here.	「ブラウン牧師をここに呼びましょう。
You can be married at home, Laura.	ローラ、家で結婚式を挙げればいいのよ。
We can have a nice little wedding here.”	ここで素敵な小さな結婚式を挙げましょう」

“No, Ma, we couldn’t have any kind of a wedding and not wait to have Almanzo’s mother here,” Laura objected.

「いいえ、ママ、アルマンゾのお母さんが来るまで待たずに結婚式を挙げることはできないよ」とローラは反対した。

“Laura is right, and you think so yourself, Caroline,” said Pa.

「ローラは正しいし、君もそう思っているだろう、キャロライン」とパパは言った。

“Of course I do,” Ma admitted.

「もちろんそうよ」とママは認めた。
