Chapter 23: THE WHEAT IN THE WALL

第23章: 壁の中の麦

In the morning the snowdrift was gone.	朝には雪の吹きだまりは消えていた。
When Laura made a peephole on the upstairs window and looked through it she saw bare ground.	ローラが二階の窓にのぞき穴を開けて覗くと、地面がむき出しになっているのが見えた。
Blown snow was driving over it in low clouds, but the street was hard, brown earth.	吹きさらしの雪が低い雲の中を吹き飛ばしていたが、道は固い茶色い土だった。

“Ma! Ma!” she cried.	「ママ! ママ!」と彼女は叫んだ。
“I can see the ground!”	「地面が見える!」

“I know,” Ma answered.	「知ってるよ」とママは答えた。
“The winds blew all the snow away last night.”	「昨夜の風が雪を全部吹き飛ばしたの」

“What time is it?	「今何時?
I mean, what month is it?” Laura asked stupidly.	いや、何月?」とローラは愚かな質問をした。

“It is the middle of February,” Ma answered.

「2月の中旬よ」とママは答えた。

Then spring was nearer than Laura had thought.	ということは、春はローラが思っていたよりも近かった。
February was a short month and March would be spring.	2月は短い月で、3月は春になる。
The train would come again and they would have white bread and meat.	列車がまた来れば、白いパンや肉が手に入る。

“I am so tired of brown bread with nothing on it,” Laura said.

「何もつけない黒パンには飽き飽きだよ」とローラは言った。

“Don’t complain, Laura!” Ma told her quickly.	「文句を言うんじゃない、ローラ!」とママはすぐに言った。
“Never complain of what you have.	「今あるものに文句を言うのはやめなさい。
Always remember you are fortunate to have it.”	それを手に入れることができて幸運だということを常に思い出しなさい。」

Laura had not meant to complain but she did not know how to explain what she had meant.	ローラは文句を言うつもりはなかったが、自分の言いたいことをどう説明したらいいかわからなかった。
She answered meekly, “Yes, Ma.”	彼女は素直に「はい、ママ」と答えた。
Then, startled, she looked at the wheat sack in the corner.	それから、驚いて、彼女は隅にある小麦の袋を見た。
There was so little wheat left in it that it lay folded like an empty sack.	小麦がほとんど残っていないので、空の袋のように折り畳まれて置かれていた。

“Ma!” she exclaimed, “Did you mean . . .”	「ママ!」彼女は叫んだ、「ママは・・・」
Pa had always said that she must never be afraid.	パパはいつも彼女に恐れてはいけないと言っていた。
She must never be afraid of anything.	彼女は決して何も恐れてはいけない。
She asked, “How much more wheat is there?”	彼女は尋ねた、「小麦はあとどれくらいあるの?」

“I think enough for today’s grinding,” Ma answered.

「今日挽く分には十分だと思うよ」ママは答えた。

“Pa can’t buy any more, can he?” Laura said.

「パパはもう買えないのよね?」ローラは言った。

“No, Laura. There’s no more in town.”	「そうよ、ローラ。町にはもうないのよ。」
Ma laid the slices of brown bread carefully on the oven grate to toast for breakfast.	ママは朝食にトーストするために、オーブンの格子に茶色いパンのスライスを注意深く置いた。

Then Laura braced herself, she steadied herself, and she said, “Ma. Will we starve?”

それからローラは気を引き締め、落ち着いて言った。「ママ。私たちは飢え死にするの?」

“We won’t starve, no,” Ma replied.	「飢え死にはしないよ」とママは答えた。
“If Pa must, he will kill Ellen and the heifer calf.”	「パパは必要ならエレンと雌牛の子牛を殺すよ」

“Oh, no! No!” Laura cried.

「ああ、いや! いや!」とローラは叫んだ。

“Be quiet, Laura,” Ma said.	「静かにしなさい、ローラ」とママは言った。
Carrie and Mary were coming downstairs to dress by the stove, and Ma went up to carry Grace down.	キャリーとメアリーはストーブのそばで着替えるために階下へ降りてきて、ママはグレースを抱いて降りてきた。

Pa hauled hay all day, and came into the house only to say that he was going to Fuller’s store for a minute before supper.	パパは一日中干し草を運び、夕食前にちょっとフラーの店に行くと言うためだけに家に入ってきた。
When he came back he brought news.	彼が帰ってきた時、彼はニュースを持っていた。

“There’s a rumor in town that some settler, eighteen or twenty miles south or southeast of here, raised some wheat last summer,” he said.	「町では、ここから南か南東に18マイルか20マイル行ったところに住む開拓者が去年の夏に小麦を育てたという噂がある」と彼は言った。
“They say he’s wintering in his claim shanty.”	「彼は自分の掘っ立て小屋で越冬しているらしい」

“Who says so?” Ma asked.

「誰がそう言っているの?」とママは尋ねた。

“It’s a rumor,” Pa said again.	「噂だ」とパパは再び言った。
“Nearly everybody says so.	「ほとんどみんながそう言っている。
Nearest I can find out, Foster is the man that started it.	私の知る限り、フォスターがその噂を始めた男だ。
He says he heard it from somebody working on the railroad.	彼は鉄道で働いている誰かからそれを聞いたと言っている。
Some fellow that was passing through last fall, he says, was telling about the crop of wheat this settler raised, said he had a ten-acre patch that must run thirty or forty bushels to the acre.	彼が言うには、去年の秋に通りかかった誰かが、この入植者が育てた小麦の収穫について話していて、彼は1エーカーあたり30または40ブッシェルになるに違いない10エーカーの畑を持っていると言った。
Say three hundred bushels of wheat, within about twenty miles of here.”	小麦300ブッシェル、ここから20マイル以内だ」

“I trust you aren’t thinking of starting out on such a wild-goose chase, Charles,” Ma said gently.

「そんな無駄足を踏み出そうとしているわけではないよね、チャールズ」とママは優しく言った。

“A fellow might do it,” Pa remarked.	「誰かがそれをするかもしれない」とパパは言った。
“With a couple of days of clear weather and a snowfall to hold up the sled, he ought to be able to make it all ri . . .”	「2、3日晴天が続き、そりを支える雪が降れば、彼はそれをすべてうまくやれるはずだ・・・」

“No!” said Ma.

「だめ!」とママは言った。

Pa looked at her, startled.	パパは驚いて彼女を見た。
They all stared at her.	彼らは皆彼女を見つめた。
They had never seen Ma look like that.	彼らはママがそんな顔をするのを見た事がなかった。
She was quiet but she was terrible.	彼女は静かだったが恐ろしかった。

Quietly she told Pa, “I say, No. You don’t take such a chance.”

彼女は静かにパパに言った、「私はノーと言います。あなたはそんな危険を冒さないで。」

“Why . . . Caroline!” Pa said.

「何故・・・キャロライン!」パパは言った。

“Your hauling hay is bad enough,” Ma told him.	「あなたが干し草を運ぶのは十分に悪いことよ」ママは彼に言った。
“You don’t go hunting for that wheat.”	「あなたはその小麦を探しに行かないで。」

Pa said mildly, “Not as long as you feel that way about it, I won’t. But . . .”

パパは穏やかに言った、「君がそのように感じている限り、私は行かないよ。でも・・・」

“I won’t hear any buts,” Ma said, still terrible.	「でもなんて聞きたくないよ」ママは言った、まだひどい様子だった。
“This time I put my foot down.”	「今回は私は断固反対よ。」

“All right, that settles it,” Pa agreed.

「分かった、それで決まりだ」パパは同意した。

Laura and Carrie looked at each other.	ローラとキャリーは顔を見合わせた。
They felt as if thunder and lightning had come down on them suddenly, and suddenly gone.	まるで雷と稲妻が突然降りてきて、突然去っていったかのようだった。
Ma poured the tea with a trembling hand.	ママは震える手でお茶を注いだ。

“Oh Charles, I’m sorry, I spilled it,” she said.

「ああ、チャールズ、ごめんなさい、こぼしちゃった」と彼女は言った。

“Never mind,” said Pa.	「気にするな」とパパは言った。
He poured the spilled tea from his saucer into the cup.	彼は受け皿からこぼれたお茶をカップに注いだ。
“A long time since I had to pour my tea into the saucer to cool it,” he mentioned.	「お茶を冷やすために受け皿に注ぐなんて久しぶりだ」と彼は言った。

“I’m afraid the fire’s going down,” said Ma.

「火が消えそう」とママは言った。

“It isn’t the fire.	「火ではない。
The weather’s turning colder,” said Pa.	天候が寒くなってきている」とパパは言った。

“You couldn’t go, anyway,” Ma said.	「いずれにせよ、あなたは行けないよ」とママは言った。
“There’d be nobody to do the chores and nobody to haul hay.”	「雑用をする人も干し草を運ぶ人もいないよ」

“You’re right, Caroline, you always are,” Pa assured her.	「君は正しいよ、キャロライン、いつも正しい」とパパは彼女を安心させた。
“We’ll make out with what we have.”	「私たちは持っているもので何とかするよ」
Then he glanced at the corner where the wheat sack had been.	それから彼は小麦の袋があった隅をちらっと見た。
But he said nothing about it until he had done the chores and twisted some hay.	しかし彼は雑用を済ませて干し草をねじるまでそれについては何も言わなかった。
He laid down the armful of hay sticks by the stove and spread his hands to warm.	彼はストーブのそばに干し草の束を置き、手を広げて温めた。

“Out of wheat, Caroline?” he asked.

「小麦がなくなったのか、キャロライン?」と彼は尋ねた。

“Yes, Charles,” Ma said.	「そうよ、チャールズ」とママは言った。
“There’s bread for breakfast.”	「朝食にはパンがあるよ」

“Running out of potatoes?”

「じゃがいももなくなりそうか?」

“It seems as though everything is giving out at once,” Ma answered.	「全てが一気に尽きようとしているみたい」とママは答えた。
“But I have six potatoes for tomorrow.”	「でも明日のためにじゃがいもを6つ取ってあるよ」

“Where is the milk pail?” Pa asked.

「牛乳の桶はどこだ?」とパパは尋ねた。

“The milk pail?” Ma repeated.

「牛乳の桶?」とママは繰り返した。

“I’m going up the street a few minutes and I want the milk pail,” Pa said.

「ちょっと通りに出かけるから牛乳の桶が欲しい」とパパは言った。

Laura brought him the milk pail.	ローラは彼に牛乳の桶を持って行った。
She could not help asking, “Is there a milch cow in town, Pa?”	彼女は尋ねずにはいられなかった。「町に乳牛がいるの、パパ?」

“No, Laura,” he said.	「いいや、ローラ」と彼は言った。
He went through the front room and they heard the front door shut.	彼は居間を通り抜け、玄関のドアが閉まる音が聞こえた。

Almanzo and Royal were eating supper.	アルマンゾとロイヤルは夕食を食べていた。
Almanzo had stacked the pancakes with brown sugar and he had made plenty of them.	アルマンゾはホットケーキに黒砂糖をかけて重ね、たくさん作っていた。
Royal had eaten halfway down his stack, Almanzo was nearing the bottom of his, and one tall stack of two dozen pancakes, dripping melted brown sugar, was standing untouched when Pa knocked at the door.	ロイヤルは山の半分を食べ、アルマンゾは底に近づき、溶けた黒砂糖が滴る20枚のホットケーキの山が手つかずのまま残っていた時に、パパがドアをノックした。
Royal opened it.	ロイヤルがドアを開けた。

“Come in, Mr. Ingalls!	「インガルスさん、どうぞ!
Sit up and have some pancakes with us!”	座って一緒にホットケーキを食べましょう!」
Royal invited him.	ロイヤルが彼を招き入れた。

“Thank you just the same.	「どうもありがとう。
Could you be persuaded to sell me some wheat?” Pa asked, stepping in.	小麦を売ってくれませんか?」とパパは中に入りながら尋ねた。

“Sorry,” Royal said.	「すみません」とロイヤルは言った。
“We have no more to sell.”	「もう売るものがないんです」

“Clean sold out, uh?” said Pa.

「すっかり売り切れちゃったんだね?」とパパは言った。

“Clean sold out!” said Royal.

「すっかり売り切れちゃったんだ!」とロイヤルは言った。

“I’d be willing to pay pretty high for some wheat,” Pa said.

「小麦ならかなり高くても買うつもりだ」とパパは言った。

“I wish I’d brought out another carload,” Royal replied.	「もう一車分運んでくればよかった」とロイヤルは答えた。
“Sit up and have some supper with us anyway.	「とにかく座って夕食を一緒に食べよう。
Manzo brags on his pancakes.”	マンゾは自分のパンケーキを自慢しているよ」

Pa did not answer.	パパは答えなかった。
He walked to the end wall and lifted one of the saddles from its peg.	彼は端の壁まで歩き、鞍を掛け金から外した。
Almanzo exclaimed, “Hey, what are you doing?”	アルマンゾは「おい、何をしているんだ?」と叫んだ。

Pa held the milk pail’s rim firmly against the wall.	パパは牛乳桶の縁を壁にしっかりと押し付けた。
He pulled the plug out of the knothole.	彼は節穴から栓を抜いた。
A round stream of wheat, as large as the hole, poured rattling into the pail.	穴と同じ大きさの小麦の丸い流れが、桶にガラガラと注がれた。

“I’m buying some wheat from you boys,” Pa answered Almanzo.

「君たちから小麦を買うんだ」とパパはアルマンゾに答えた。

“Say, that’s my seed wheat;	「おい、それは私の種まき用小麦だ。
and I’m not selling it!” Almanzo declared.	売らないよ!」とアルマンゾは宣言した。

“We’re out of wheat at my house and I am buying some,” Pa replied.	「うちでは小麦がなくなったので、買うんだ」とパパは答えた。
The wheat kept on pouring into the pail, sliding down the climbing pile and tinkling a little against the tin.	小麦はバケツに注がれ続け、山を登り、ブリキに当たって少し音を立てた。
Almanzo stood watching him, but after a minute Royal sat down.	アルマンゾは立って彼を見ていたが、しばらくするとロイヤルは座った。
He tipped his chair back against the wall, put his hands in his pockets, and grinned at Almanzo.	彼は椅子を壁に立てかけ、両手をポケットに入れて、アルマンゾにニヤリと笑った。

When the pail was full, Pa thrust the plug into the hole.	バケツがいっぱいになると、パパは穴に栓を差し込んだ。
He tapped it firm with his fist and then tapped lightly up the wall and across it.	彼はそれを拳でしっかりと叩き、それから壁を軽く叩いて横切った。

“You’ve got plenty of wheat there,” he said.	「小麦はたくさんあるな」と彼は言った。
“Now we’ll talk price.	「では、値段の話をしよう。
What do you figure this pailful’s worth?”	このバケツ一杯の価値はいくらだと思う?」

“How did you know it was there?” Almanzo wanted to know.

「そこにあるのをどうやって知ったんだ?」とアルマンゾは知りたがった。

“The inside of this room doesn’t fit the outside,” said Pa.	「この部屋の中は外と合わない」とパパは言った。
“It’s a good foot short, allowing for two by four studding besides.	「2×4の柱を除いても、1フィート以上短い。
Gives you a sixteen-inch space there.	そこに16インチの空間ができる。
Any man with an eye can see it.”	目のある人なら誰でもわかる」

“I’ll be darned,” said Almanzo.

「びっくりした」とアルマンゾは言った。

“I noticed that plug in the knothole, the day you had the saddles off on that antelope hunt,” Pa added.	「あの節穴の栓は、あのアンテロープ狩りで鞍を外した日に気がついたんだ」とパパは付け加えた。
“So I figured you had grain there.	「だから、そこに穀物があると思ったんだ。
It’s the only thing likely to run out of a knothole.”	節穴から流れ出そうなのは穀物だけだから」

“Anybody else in town know it?” Almanzo asked.

「町の他の誰かが知っている?」とアルマンゾは尋ねた。

“Not that I know of,” Pa said.

「私の知る限りではいない」とパパは言った。

“See here,” Royal put in, “We didn’t know you were out of wheat.	「ほら」とロイヤルは言った、「小麦がなくなったなんて知らなかったよ。
That’s Almanzo’s wheat, it’s not mine, but he wouldn’t hang onto it and see anybody starve.”	それはアルマンゾの小麦で、私のではないが、彼はそれを抱え込んで誰かが飢えるのを見ているわけではない」

“It’s my seed wheat,” Almanzo explained.	「それは私の種まき用小麦だ」とアルマンゾは説明した。
“Extra good seed, too.	「とても良い種だ。
And no telling either if seed will be shipped in here in time for spring planting.	それに種が春の植え付けに間に合うようにここに出荷されるかどうかもわからない。
Of course I won’t see anybody starve, but somebody can go after that wheat that was raised south of town.”	もちろん誰かが飢えるのを見ているわけではないが、誰かが町の南で育った小麦を取りに行くことはできる」

“Southeast, I heard,” Pa said.	「南東だと聞いた」とパパは言った。
“I did think of going myself, but . . .”	「自分で行くことも考えたが・・・」

“You can’t go,” Royal interrupted.	「行けないよ」とロイヤルが口を挟んだ。
“Who’d take care of your folks if you got caught in a storm and . . . got delayed or anything?”	「もし嵐に巻き込まれて・・・遅れたりしたら誰が家族の面倒を見るんだ?」

“This isn’t settling what I’m to pay for this wheat,” Pa reminded them.

「これでこの小麦の支払いが決まったわけではない」とパパは彼らに思い出させた。

Almanzo waved that away, “What’s a little wheat between neighbors?	アルマンゾはそれを払いのけ、「近所同士で小麦の少しくらい何だ?
You’re welcome to it, Mr. Ingalls.	インガルスさん、どうぞ。
Draw up a chair and sample these pancakes before they get cold.”	椅子を引いて、冷めないうちにこのパンケーキを試食して」

But Pa insisted on paying for the wheat.	しかしパパは小麦の支払いを主張した。
After some talk about it, Almanzo charged a quarter and Pa paid it.	それについて少し話した後、アルマンゾは4分の1ドルを請求し、パパはそれを支払った。
Then he did sit down, as they urged him, and lifting the blanket cake on the untouched pile, he slipped from under it a section of the stack of hot, syrupy pancakes.	それから彼は彼らに促されるままに座り、手つかずの山の上のブランケットケーキを持ち上げて、その下から熱いシロップ状のパンケーキの山の一部を滑り込ませた。
Royal forked a brown slice of ham from the frying pan onto Pa’s plate and Almanzo filled his coffee cup.	ロイヤルはフライパンからパパの皿にハムの茶色いスライスをフォークで乗せ、アルマンゾはコーヒーカップを満たした。

“You boys certainly live in the lap of luxury,” Pa remarked.	「君たちは確かに贅沢な生活をしているね」とパパは言った。
The pancakes were no ordinary buckwheat pancakes.	そのパンケーキは普通のそば粉のパンケーキではなかった。
Almanzo followed his mother’s pancake rule and the cakes were light as foam, soaked through with melted brown sugar.	アルマンゾは母親のパンケーキのルールに従い、ケーキは泡のように軽く、溶けた黒砂糖が染み込んでいた。
The ham was sugar-cured and hickory-smoked, from the Wilder farm in Minnesota.	ハムはミネソタのワイルダー農場から来たもので、砂糖で塩漬けされ、ヒッコリーで燻製されていた。
“I don’t know when I’ve eaten a tastier meal,” said Pa.	「いつこんなおいしい食事を食べたかわからない」とパパは言った。

They talked about weather and hunting and politics, railroads and farming, and when Pa left both Royal and Almanzo urged him to drop in often.	彼らは天気や狩猟、政治、鉄道、農業について話し、パパが帰るときにはロイヤルとアルマンゾの両方が彼によく立ち寄るように促した。
Neither of them played checkers, so they did not spend much time in the stores.	どちらもチェッカーをプレイしなかったので、店であまり時間を過ごさなかった。
Their own place was warmer.	自分たちの家の方が暖かかった。

“Now you’ve found the way, Mr. Ingalls, come back!” Royal said heartily.	「道がわかったなら、インガルスさん、また来てください!」とロイヤルは心から言った。
“Be glad to see you any time;	「いつでも歓迎します。
Manzo and I get tired of each other’s company.	マンゾと私はお互いに飽き飽きしている。
Drop in any time, the latchstring is always out!”	いつでも立ち寄ってください、いつでも歓迎します!」

“I’ll be glad to!” Pa was answering; he broke off and listened.	「喜んで!」パパは答えていたが、話を中断して耳を傾けた。
Almanzo stepped out with him into the freezing wind.	アルマンゾは彼と一緒に凍てつく風の中へ出た。
Stars glittered overhead, but in the northwest sky they were going out rapidly as solid darkness swept up over them.	頭上では星がきらめいていたが、北西の空では、暗闇が押し寄せてきて、星が急速に消えていった。
“Here she comes!” said Pa.	「来たぞ!」パパが言った。
“I guess nobody’ll do any visiting for a spell.	「しばらくは誰も訪ねて来ないだろう。
I’ll just about make it home if I hurry.”	急げば家に帰れるだろう。」

The blizzard struck the house when he was at the door so no one heard him come in.	彼がドアのところにいた時にブリザードが家を襲ったので、誰も彼が入ってくるのを聞いていなかった。
But they had little time to worry, for almost at once he came into the kitchen where they were all sitting in the dark.	しかし、心配する時間はほとんどなかった。彼はすぐに、みんなが暗闇の中で座っている台所に入って来た。
They were close to the stove and warm enough, but Laura was shivering, hearing the blizzard again and thinking that Pa was out in it.	彼らはストーブの近くにいて十分暖かかったのだが、ローラは震え、再びブリザードの音を聞き、パパがその中にいることを考えていた。

“Here’s some wheat to go on with, Caroline,” Pa said, setting the pail down beside her.	「キャロライン、小麦を少し持ってきたよ」とパパは言い、バケツを彼女の横に置いた。
She reached down to it and felt the kernels.	彼女は手を伸ばして、粒を触った。

“Oh, Charles. Oh, Charles,” she said, rocking, “I might have known you’d provide for us, but wherever did you get it?	「ああ、チャールズ。ああ、チャールズ」と彼女は揺れながら言った。「あなたが私たちを養ってくれることはわかっていたけど、どこで手に入れたの?
I thought there was no wheat left in town.”	町に小麦は残っていないと思っていたよ。」

“I wasn’t sure there was or I’d have told you.	「私も確信が持てなかったんだ、でなければ君に話していたよ。
But I didn’t want to raise hopes to be disappointed,” Pa explained.	でも、期待を抱かせて失望させたくなかったんだ」とパパは説明した。
“I agreed not to tell where I got it, but don’t worry, Caroline.	「どこで手に入れたかは言わないと約束したんだが、心配するな、キャロライン。
There’s more where that came from.”	もっとあるんだ。」

“Come, Carrie, I’m going to put you and Grace to bed now,” Ma said with new energy.	「さあ、キャリー、あなたとグレースを寝かせましょう」とママは元気を取り戻して言った。
When she came downstairs she lighted the button lamp and filled the coffee mill.	階下に降りると、ママはボタンランプを点け、コーヒーミルに豆を入れた。
The sound of the grinding began again, and it followed Laura and Mary up the cold stairs until it was lost in the blizzard’s howling.	挽く音が再び始まり、ローラとメアリーが冷たい階段を上っていくと、ブリザードの咆哮の中に消えていった。
