Chapter 31: Mosquitoes
第31章: 蚊
“We must build a stable for the horses,” Pa said.
「馬小屋を建てなくては」とパパは言った。
“It won’t always be warm enough for them to stay outdoors and a bad storm might come even in summer.
「いつも馬が屋外にいるのに十分な暖かさがあるわけではないし、夏でもひどい嵐が来るかもしれない。
They must have shelter.”
馬には避難場所が必要だ」
“Ellen too, Pa?” Laura asked.
「エレンもパパ?」とローラは尋ねた。
“Cattle are better off outdoors in the summer,” Pa told her.
「牛は夏は屋外にいる方がいい」とパパは彼女に言った。
“But I like to have horses in a stable at night.”
「しかし、私は夜は馬を厩舎に入れておきたい」
Laura held boards for Pa.
ローラはパパのために板を支えた。
She handed him tools and brought nails while he built the stable, at the west of the house against the little hill.
彼が家の西側の小さな丘に面した厩舎を建てている間、彼女は彼に道具を渡し、釘を持ってきた。
It would be sheltered there on the west and the north, when the cold winter winds were blowing.
寒い冬の風が吹くとき、そこは西と北に守られるだろう。
The days were warm.
日中は暖かかった。
Mosquitoes came out of the Big Slough at sundown and sang their high, keen song all night as they swarmed around Ellen, biting her and sucking the blood until she ran around and around on her picket rope.
日没になると蚊がビッグ・スローから出てきて、エレンの周りに群がり、彼女がピケットロープをぐるぐる回るまで彼女を噛んで血を吸いながら、一晩中高く鋭い歌を歌った。
They went into the stable and bit the horses until they pulled at their halters and stamped.
蚊は厩舎に入り、馬が頭絡を引っ張って足踏みするまで馬を噛んだ。
They came into the claim shanty and bit everyone there until great blotches raised on faces and hands.
蚊は掘っ立て小屋に入ってきて、顔や手に大きな斑点ができるまでそこにいる人全員を噛んだ。
Their singing and the sting of their bites made night a torment.
蚊の歌声と刺し傷が夜を苦痛にした。
“This will never do,” Pa said.
「これはいけない」とパパは言った。
“We must have mosquito bar on the windows and door.”
「窓とドアに蚊帳が必要だ」
“It’s the Big Slough,” Ma complained.
「ビッグ・スローだよ」とママは不満を言った。
“The mosquitoes come from there.
「蚊はそこから来るのよ。
I wish we were farther away from it.”
もっと遠くにあればいいんだけど」
But Pa liked the Big Slough.
しかし、パパはビッグ・スローが好きだった。
“There are acres and acres of hay there, that anyone can have for the cutting,” he told Ma.
「あそこには何エーカーもの干し草があって、誰でも刈り取ることができるんだ」とパパはママに言った。
“No one will ever take up homesteads in the Big Slough.
「誰もビッグ・スローに住み着こうとはしないだろう。
There is only upland hay on our place, but with the Big Slough so near, we can always cut hay there and have all we need.
うちの土地には高台の干し草しかないが、ビッグ・スローがすぐ近くにあるから、いつでもそこで干し草を刈って、必要な分だけ手に入れることができる。
“Besides, all the prairie grass is full of mosquitoes too.
「それに、草原の草も蚊だらけだ。
I’ll go to town today and get some mosquito bar.”
今日は町に行って蚊帳を買ってくるよ」
Pa brought yards of pink mosquito bar from town and strips of lumber to make a frame for a screen door.
パパは町から何ヤードものピンクの蚊帳と、網戸の枠を作るための木材の板を持って帰ってきた。
While he made the door, Ma tacked mosquito bar over the windows.
パパがドアを作っている間に、ママは窓に蚊帳を張った。
Then she tacked it to the door frame and Pa hung the screen door.
それからママはそれをドアの枠に張り、パパは網戸を掛けた。
That night he built a smudge of old, damp grass, so the smoke would drift before the stable door.
その夜、パパは古い湿った草で煙を作り、煙が馬小屋のドアの前に漂うようにした。
Mosquitoes would not go through the smoke.
蚊は煙の中を通り抜けられない。
Pa made another smudge so Ellen could stand in its smoke and she went at once and stayed there.
パパはエレンが煙の中に立っていられるようにもう一つ煙を作り、エレンはすぐにそこに行ってそこにいた。
Pa made sure there was no dry grass near the smudges and built them up so they would last all night.
パパは煙の近くに乾いた草がないことを確認して、一晩中続くように煙を積み上げた。
“There!” he said, “I guess that fixes the mosquitoes.”
「これで!」とパパは言った。「これで蚊は解決したと思う。」
