第25章: パパの賭け

That day did not seem real.	その日は現実とは思えなかった。
Laura’s eyelids felt sandy and she yawned all the time, yet she did not feel sleepy.	ローラのまぶたは砂が入ったように感じ、ずっとあくびをしていたが、眠気は感じなかった。
At noon young Mr. Hinz and the two Mr. Harthorns came to dinner.	正午に若いヒンツさんと2人のハーソーンさんが昼食に来た。
In the afternoon their hammers could be heard pounding on the framework of the new buildings.	午後には彼らのハンマーが新しい建物の骨組みを打つ音が聞こえた。
It seemed a long time since Pa had gone.	パパが行ってから長い時間が経ったように思えた。

He did not come that night.	その夜彼は来なかった。
All the next day he did not come.	翌日も彼は来なかった。

And now Laura was sure that he was having a hard time to get the homestead.	そして今ローラは彼が農場を取得するのに苦労していることを確信していた。

So many men came to eat that she did not try to count them.	あまりにも多くの男性が食事に来たので、彼女は数えようとしなかった。

Late in the afternoon of the fourth day Pa came home.	4日目の午後遅く、パパが帰宅した。
He waved as he drove by to put the tired team in the stable, and he walked smiling into the house.	彼は疲れた馬を馬小屋に入れるために通り過ぎるときに手を振り、笑顔で家に入ってきた。
“Well, Caroline! Girls!” he said.	「やあ、キャロライン! 娘たち!」と彼は言った。
“We’ve got the claim.”	「権利を取得したよ」

Ma exclaimed joyfully.	ママは嬉しそうに叫んだ。

“I went after it, didn’t I?” Pa laughed.	「それを追いかけに行ったんだ、そうだろう?」パパは笑った。
“Brrr! It’s chilly, riding.	「ブルブル! 乗っていると寒いよね。
Let me get to the stove and warm myself.”	ストーブに行って温まらせて。」

Ma shook down the fire and set the kettle boiling for tea.	ママは火を揺すり、お茶のためにやかんでお湯を沸かした。
“Did you have any trouble, Charles?” she asked.	「何か困ったことがあったの、チャールズ?」と彼女は尋ねた。

“You wouldn’t believe it,” said Pa.	「信じられないと思うよ」とパパは言った。
“I never saw such a jam.	「こんな混雑は見たことがない。
It looks like the whole country’s trying to file on land.	国全体が土地の登記をしようとしているみたいだ。
I got to Brookins all right the first night, and next morning when I showed up at the Land Office I couldn’t get anywheres near the door.	最初の夜はブルッキンズに着いたんだが、翌朝、土地局に行ったら、ドアの近くまで行けなかった。
Every man had to stand in line and wait his turn.	みんな列に並んで順番を待たなければならなかった。
So many were ahead of me that my turn didn’t come that day.”	私の前にはたくさんの人がいて、その日は私の番が来なかった。」

“You didn’t stand there all day, Pa?” Laura cried.

「パパ、一日中そこに立っていたわけではないでしょう?」ローラは叫んだ。

“Yep, Flutterbudget. All day.”

“Without anything to eat?	「何も食べずに?
Oh, no, Pa!” said Carrie.	ああ、パパ!」キャリーは言った。

“Pshaw, that didn’t worry me.	「ふん、そんな心配はしていない。
What worried me was the crowds.	心配なのは群衆だ。
I kept thinking maybe somebody ahead of me is getting my quarter section.	私の前にいる誰かが私の区画を取ってしまうかもしれないとずっと考えていた。
Caroline, you never saw such crowds.	キャロライン、こんな群衆は見たことがないだろう。
But my worry then wasn’t a patch to what came later.”	でも、その時の心配は後で起こったことに比べたら大したことではなかった」

“What, Pa?” Laura asked.

「何、パパ?」ローラは尋ねた。

“Let a fellow get his breath, Flutterbudget!	「息をつかせてよ、おせっかいさん!
Well, when the Land Office closed I went along in the jam to get supper at the hotel, and I heard a couple of men talking.	土地局が閉まった時、私はホテルで夕食をとるために人混みの中を歩いていて、二人の男が話しているのを聞いた。
One had filed on a claim near Huron.	一人はヒューロンの近くの土地を申請していた。
The other said De Smet was going to be a better town than Huron, and then he mentioned the very piece I picked out last winter.	もう一人はデ・スメットはヒューロンよりも良い町になるだろうと言い、それから私が去年の冬に選んだ土地について言及した。
He told the numbers.	彼は番号を言った。
He was going to file on it first thing next morning.	彼は翌朝一番に申請するつもりだった。
He said it was the only piece left vacant anywhere near this townsite.	彼はそれがこの町の近くで空いている唯一の土地だと言った。

“Well, that was enough for me.	「まあ、それで十分だった。

“Surely you didn’t need to do that, Charles?” said Ma, handing him a cup of tea.

“I wasn’t the only man who had that idea, not by a blamed sight.	「そんな考えを持ったのは私だけじゃなかった、非難されるような見方ではね。
Lucky I got there first.	幸運にも私が最初にそこに着いた。
Must have been forty men waiting there all night, and right next to me were those two fellows that I’d heard talking.”	一晩中そこで待っていたのは40人くらいだったに違いない、そして私のすぐ隣には私が話しているのを聞いた2人の男がいた。」

He blew on the tea to cool it, and Laura said, “But they didn’t know you wanted that piece, did they?”

“Yes, the fat was in the fire then,” said Pa.	「そう、その時は脂肪が火の中にあった」とパパは言った。
“I knew I wouldn’t have a chance if I budged from that door. So I didn’t.	「私はあのドアから動いたらチャンスがないことを知っていたのです。だから動かなかったのです。
By sun-up the crowd was doubled, and a couple of hundred men must have been pushing and shoving against me before the Land Office opened.	日の出までに群衆は倍になり、土地局が開く前に数百人の男たちが私を押しのけていたに違いない。
There wasn’t any standing in line that day, I tell you!	その日は誰も並んでなかったよ!
It was each fellow for himself and devil take the hindmost.	自分のために各自が戦い、悪魔が最後尾を奪った。

“Well, girls, finally the door opened.	「さて、娘たち、ついにドアが開いた。
How about some more tea, Caroline?”	キャロライン、お茶をもう少しどう?」

“Oh, Pa, go on!” Laura cried.	「パパ、続けて!」ローラは叫んだ。
“Please.”	「お願いします。」

“Just as it opened,” said Pa.	「ちょうど開いたところだ」パパは言った。
“The Huron man crowded me back.	「ヒューロンの男は私を押し戻した。
‘Get in! I’ll hold him!’ he said to the other fellow.	「乗れ! 私が彼を抑える!」彼は他の仲間に言った。
It meant a fight, and while I fought him, the other’d get my homestead.	それは喧嘩を意味し、私が彼と喧嘩している間に、他の者が私の家屋敷を手に入れる。
Right then, quick as a wink, somebody landed like a ton of brick on the Huron man. ‘Go in, Ingalls!’ he yelled.	ちょうどその時、瞬く間に、誰かがヒューロンの男にレンガの塊のように着地した。「行け、インガルス!」彼は叫んだ。
‘I’ll fix ‘im! Yow-ee-ee!’ ”	「私が彼を抑える! わーいーいー!」」

Pa’s long, catamount screech curled against the walls, and Ma gasped, “Mercy! Charles!”

“And you’ll never guess who it was,” said Pa.

「そして、誰だか絶対に当てられないよ」とパパは言った。

“Mr. Edwards!” Laura shouted.

Pa was astounded.	パパは驚いた。
“How did you guess it, Laura?”	「どうやって当てたんだ、ローラ?」

“He yelled like that in Indian territory.	「彼はインディアンの領土であんなに叫んだよ。
He’s a wildcat from Tennessee,” Laura remembered.	彼はテネシー出身の山猫よ」とローラは思い出した。
“Oh, Pa, where is he?	「ああ、パパ、彼はどこにいるの?
Did you bring him?”	連れてきたの?」

“I couldn’t get him to come home with me,” said Pa.	「彼を連れて帰ることはできなかった」とパパは言った。
“I tried every persuasion I could think of, but he’s filed on a claim south of here and must stay with it to keep off claim jumpers.	「考えられる限りの説得を試みたが、彼はここの南の土地の所有権を申請していて、所有権侵害者を防ぐためにそこにいなければならない。
He told me to remember him to you, Caroline, and to Mary and Laura.	彼は君とメアリーとローラによろしくと言っていた。

Golly, that was a fight he started!”	彼が始めた喧嘩だったんだ!」

Mary asked anxiously.	メアリーは心配そうに尋ねた。

He got out of it as quick as I ducked inside and started filing my claim.	私が中に入って権利を主張し始めると、彼はすぐにそこから出て行った。

“All’s well that ends well, Charles,” Ma interrupted.

“Yes, I guess that’s right.	「そう、そうだろうね。
Well, girls, I’ve bet Uncle Sam fourteen dollars against a hundred and sixty acres of land, that we can make out to live on the claim for five years.	娘たちよ、私は百六十エーカーの土地と引き換えに十四ドルをアメリカ政府に賭けたんだ、五年間その土地に住み続けられるかどうかをね。
Going to help me win the bet?”	賭けに勝つのを手伝ってくれるかい?」

“Oh, yes, Pa!” Carrie said eagerly, and Mary said, “Yes, Pa!” gladly, and Laura promised soberly, “Yes, Pa.”

「もちろん、パパ!」キャリーは熱心に言い、メアリーは「もちろん、パパ!」と喜んで言い、ローラは真面目に「もちろん、パパ」と約束した。

“I don’t like to think of it as gambling,” Ma said in her gentle way.

「それをギャンブルと考えるのは好きではないよ」ママは優しく言った。

“Everything’s more or less a gamble, Caroline,” said Pa.	「全てのことが多少なりともギャンブルなんだよ、キャロライン」パパは言った。
“Nothing is certain but death and taxes.”	「死と税金以外に確かなものはない」
