Chapter 18: Pa Finds the Homestead

第18章: パパが農場を見つける

After breakfast next morning Pa took his gun and set out.	翌朝、朝食後、パパは銃を持って出かけた。
All that morning Laura was listening for a shot and not wanting to hear it.	その朝ずっと、ローラは銃声に耳を傾けていたが、聞きたくはなかった。
All morning she remembered the great wolf sitting quiet in the moonlight that shimmered through his thick fur.	その朝ずっと、彼女は厚い毛皮を通してきらめく月明かりの下で静かに座っている大きな狼を思い出していた。

Pa was late for dinner.	パパは夕食に遅れた。
It was long past noon when he stamped the snow from his feet in the lean-to.	彼が掘っ立て小屋で足から雪を踏み落としたのは、正午を過ぎてからだった。
He came in and put his gun on the wall, and hung his cap and coat on their nail.	彼は中に入って銃を壁にかけ、帽子とコートを釘に掛けた。
His mittens he hung, by their thumbs, to dry on the line behind the stove.	彼はミトンを親指で吊り下げて、ストーブの後ろの紐にかけて乾かした。
Then he washed his face and hands in the tin basin on the bench, and before the small glass that hung above it he combed his hair and his beard.	それから彼はベンチの上のブリキの洗面器で顔と手を洗い、その上に掛けられた小さな鏡の前で髪と髭を梳かした。

“Sorry I kept dinner waiting, Caroline,” he said.	「夕食を待たせてすまない、キャロライン」と彼は言った。

“It doesn’t matter, Charles; I’ve kept dinner warm,” Ma replied.	「大丈夫よ、チャールズ、夕食は温めておいたよ」とママは答えた。
“Come to the table, girls!	「テーブルにいらっしゃい、娘たち!
Don’t keep Pa waiting.”	パパを待たせてはいけないよ。」

“How far did you go, Pa?”	「パパ、どこまで行ったの?」
Mary asked.	メアリーは尋ねた。

“Better than ten miles, all told,” said Pa.	「全部で10マイル以上は行ったよ」とパパは言った。
“Those wolf tracks led me a chase.”	「あの狼の足跡が私を誘い込んだんだ。」

“Did you get the wolf, Pa?” Carrie wanted to know.	「パパ、狼は捕まえたの?」キャリーは知りたがった。
Laura did not say anything.	ローラは何も言わなかった。

Pa smiled at Carrie and said, “Now, now, don’t ask questions.	パパはキャリーに微笑んで、「さあ、さあ、質問はするな。
I’ll tell you all about it.	全部話すよ。
I went across the lake, followed the marks you girls made last night.	湖を渡って、あなたたちが昨夜つけた跡をたどった。
And what do you suppose I found in that high bank where you saw the wolf?”	そして、あなたたちが狼を見たあの高い土手で何を見つけたと思う?」

“You found the wolf,” Carrie said confidently.	「狼を見つけたんだ」とキャリーは自信を持って言った。
Laura still said nothing.	ローラは何も言わなかった。
Her food was choking her;	彼女は食べ物でむせそうになった。
she could hardly swallow the smallest mouthful.	彼女はほんの一口も飲み込むことができなかった。

“I found the wolves’ den,” said Pa.	「狼の巣を見つけた」とパパは言った。
“And the biggest wolves’ tracks I ever saw.	「そして今まで見た中で一番大きな狼の足跡も。
Girls, there were two big buffalo wolves at that den last night.”	娘たち、昨夜あの巣には二匹の大きなバッファロー狼がいた」

Mary and Carrie gasped.	メアリーとキャリーは息を呑んだ。
Ma said, “Charles!”	ママは「チャールズ!」と言った。

“It’s too late to be scared now,” Pa told them.	「今更怖がっても遅い」とパパは言った。
“But that’s what you girls did.	「でも、娘たちはそうしたんだ。
You went right up to the wolves’ den and there were the wolves.	狼の巣穴まで行って、狼がいたんだ。

“Their tracks were fresh, and all the signs show plain as day what they were doing.	「足跡は新しく、すべての兆候が彼らが何をしていたかをはっきりと示している。
It’s an old den, and from their size they’re no young wolves.	古い巣穴で、足跡の大きさからして若い狼ではない。
I’d say they’d been living there for some years.	何年もそこに住んでいると思う。
But they haven’t been living there this winter.	でも、この冬はそこに住んでいない。

“They came down from the northwest sometime yesterday evening and went pretty straight to that den.	「昨日の夕方、北西から降りてきて、その巣穴にまっすぐ向かった。
They stayed around it, in and out of it, maybe till this morning.	巣穴の周りにいて、出たり入ったりしていた。おそらく今朝までだ。
I followed their tracks from there, down along Big Slough and out on the prairie, southwest.	そこから足跡をたどって、ビッグ・スローに沿って下り、南西の草原に出た。

“From the time they left the old den, those wolves never stopped.	「古い巣穴を離れてから、狼は一度も止まらなかった。
They trotted along, side by side, as if they had started on a long journey and knew where they were going.	長い旅に出かけ、行き先を知っているかのように、並んで小走りしていた。
I followed them far enough to be sure that I couldn’t get a shot at them.	撃てないと確信するまで、かなり遠くまで追跡した。
They’ve left for good.”	狼は永遠に去っていった。」

Laura took a deep breath as though she had forgotten to breathe till now.	ローラは、今まで息をするのを忘れていたかのように、深呼吸をした。
Pa looked at her.	パパは彼女を見た。
“You are glad they got away, Laura?” he asked.	「狼が逃げてくれて嬉しいのか、ローラ?」と彼は尋ねた。

“Yes, Pa, I am,” Laura answered.	「はい、パパ、嬉しいよ」とローラは答えた。
“They didn’t chase us.”	「狼は私たちを追いかけなかったよ」

“No, Laura, they didn’t chase you.	「そう、ローラ、狼は君たちを追いかけなかった。
And for the life of me, I can’t figure out why they didn’t.”	そして、私の人生において、なぜ狼が追いかけなかったのか理解できない」

“And what were they doing at that old den?”	「そして、狼はあの古い巣穴で何をしていたんだ?」
Ma wondered.	ママは不思議に思った。

“They were just looking at it,” said Pa.	「狼は巣穴をただ見ていたんだ」とパパは言った。
“My belief is they came back to visit the old place where they lived before the graders came in and the antelope left.	「私の考えでは、狼はグレーダーがやってきて、アンテロープが去る前に住んでいた古い場所を訪れるために戻ってきたんだ。
Maybe they used to live here before the hunters killed the last buffalo.	もしかしたら、狼はハンターが最後のバッファローを殺す前にここに住んでいたのかもしれない。
Buffalo wolves were all over this country once, but there’s not many left now, even around here.	かつてバッファローウルフはこの国中にいたが、今ではこの辺りにもあまり残っていない。
The railroads and settlements kept driving them farther west.	鉄道と入植地が狼を西へ西へと追いやったんだ。
One thing’s certain if I know anything about wild animal tracks;	私が野生動物の足跡について何か知っているなら、一つ確かなことは、
those two wolves came straight from the west and went straight back west, and all they did here was to stop one night at the old den.	あの2匹の狼は西からまっすぐやってきて、西にまっすぐ戻っていったということだ。そして、ここでしたことは、古い巣穴で一晩過ごしただけだ。
And I wouldn’t wonder if they’re pretty nearly the last buffalo wolves that’ll ever be seen in this part of the country.”	そして、この国のこの地域で見られる最後のバッファローウルフに近いとしても不思議ではない。」

“Oh, Pa, the poor wolves,” Laura mourned.

“There’s enough to be sorry for, without being sorry for the feelings of wild beasts!	「野生の獣の気持ちを気の毒に思うことなく、気の毒に思うことは十分にある!
Be thankful the brutes didn’t do any worse than scare you girls last night.”	昨夜、あの獣たちがあなたたちを怖がらせただけで、それ以上のことはしなかったことに感謝しなさい。」

“That isn’t all, Caroline!” Pa announced.	「それだけじゃないんだ、キャロライン!」パパは告げた。
“I’ve got some news.	「ニュースがあるんだ。
I’ve found our homestead.”	私たちのホームステッドを見つけたんだ。」

“Oh, where, Pa! What’s it like?	「ああ、どこなの、パパ! どんな感じなの?
How far is it?” Mary and Laura and Carrie asked, excited.	どれくらい遠いの?」メアリーとローラとキャリーは興奮して尋ねた。
Ma said, “That’s good, Charles.”	ママは「それはよかったよ、チャールズ」と言った。

Pa pushed back his plate, drank his tea, wiped his mustache, and said, “It is just right in every way.	パパは皿を押しのけ、お茶を飲み、口ひげを拭いて、「あらゆる点でちょうどいい。
It lies south of where the lake joins Big Slough, and the slough curves around to the west of it.	湖がビッグ・スローと合流する場所の南にあり、スローはその西側に曲がっている。
There’s a rise in the prairie to the south of the slough, that will make a nice place to build.	スローの南にある大草原には小高い丘があり、家を建てるにはいい場所になるだろう。
A little hill just west of it crowds the slough back on that side.	そのすぐ西にある小さな丘が、その側のスローを押し戻している。
On the quarter section there’s upland hay and plow land lying to the south;	クォーターセクションには、南に高台の干し草と耕作地がある。
and good grazing on all of it, everything a farmer could ask for.	農家が望むものすべてが揃っている。
And it’s near the townsite, so the girls can go to school.”	町の近くだから、娘たちは学校に行ける」

“I’m glad, Charles,” said Ma.

“It’s a funny thing,” Pa said.	「おかしなことだ」とパパは言った。
“Here I’ve been looking around this country for months and never finding a quarter section that just exactly suited me.	「この辺りを何ヶ月も探し回って、自分にぴったりの土地を見つけられなかった。
And that one was lying there all the time.	あの土地はずっとそこにあったんだ。
Likely enough I wouldn’t have come across it at all, if this wolf chase hadn’t taken me across the lake and down along the slough on that side.”	狼を追いかけて湖を渡り、あの側の沼地に沿って下りなければ、あの土地に出会うことはなかっただろう。」

“I wish you had filed on it last fall,” Ma worried.

「去年の秋に申請しておけばよかったのに」とママは心配した。

“Nobody’ll be in here this winter,” Pa said confidently.	「この冬は誰も来ないだろう」とパパは自信を持って言った。
“I’ll get out to Brookins and file on that claim next spring before anybody else is looking for a homestead.”	「来年の春、誰かが農場を探す前にブルックリンズに行って、申請するよ。」
