第11章: 給料日

Two weeks had gone by and now Pa worked every evening after supper in his little office at the back of the store.	2週間が過ぎ、今ではパパは毎晩夕食後、店の奥にある小さな事務所で働いていた。
He was making out the time-checks.	彼はタイムチェックをしていた。

From the time-book he counted up the days each man had worked, and figured how much he had earned.	彼はタイムブックから、各自が働いた日数を数え、どれだけ稼いだかを計算した。
Then Pa figured up how much the man owed the store;	それからパパはその人が店にどれだけ借金があるかを計算した。
to that he added the man’s board-bill at the cook-shanty.	それに、その人の食堂での食事代を加えた。
He subtracted that amount from the man’s wages, and made out his time-check.	彼はその金額をその人の給料から差し引き、タイムチェックを作成した。

On payday Pa would give each man his time-check and the money due him.

給料日には、パパは各自にタイムチェックと支払われるべきお金を渡した。

Always before, Laura had helped Pa with his work.	これまではいつも、ローラはパパの仕事を手伝っていた。
When she was very little, in the Big Woods, she had helped him make the bullets for his gun;	彼女がとても小さかった頃、大きな森で、彼女は彼が銃の弾丸を作るのを手伝った。

Still she always knew what he was doing, for the store was in plain sight from the shanty’s doorway and she saw everyone who came and went.

In a little while the first man came out and got into the buggy.	しばらくすると、最初の男が出てきて馬車に乗り込んだ。
After another look all around, they drove away quickly.	もう一回周りを見回した後、彼らは素早く走り去った。

Laura ran out of the shanty toward the store.	ローラは掘っ立て小屋から店に向かって走った。
She was sure that something had happened there.	彼女はそこで何かが起こったと確信していた。
Her heart was beating wildly, and it gave a great flop when she saw Pa, safe and sound, come out of the store.	彼女の心臓は激しく鼓動していたが、パパが安全に店から出てくるのを見て、大きくどきどきした。

“Where are you going, Laura?” Ma had called after her, and now Laura answered, “Nowhere, Ma.”

Pa came into the shanty and swung the door shut behind him.	パパは掘っ立て小屋に入ってきて、後ろのドアを閉めた。
He took a heavy canvas bag out of his pocket.	彼はポケットから重い帆布の袋を取り出した。

“I want you to take care of this, Caroline,” he said.	「キャロライン、これを頼む」と彼は言った。
“It’s the men’s pay.	「これは男たちの給料だ。
Anybody that tried to steal it would come to the office.”	盗もうとする奴は事務所に来る。」

“I’ll take care of it, Charles,” Ma said.	「チャールズ、私が預かっておきます」とママは言った。
She wrapped the bag in a clean cloth and worked it deep into her open sack of flour.	彼女は袋をきれいな布で包み、開いた小麦粉の袋の奥深くに押し込んだ。
“Nobody’ll ever think of looking there for it.”	「誰もそこを探そうとは思わないでしょう。」

“Did that man bring it, Pa?” Laura asked.

“Yes. That was the paymaster,” said Pa.

“Those men with him were afraid,” Laura said.

“Oh, I wouldn’t say that.	「ああ、そうは言えないね。
They were only guarding the paymaster to keep him from being robbed,” Pa said.	彼らは給与支払い係が強盗に襲われないように守っていただけだ」とパパは言った。
“He’s carrying a good many thousand dollars in cash to pay all the men in the camps, and somebody might try to get it.	「彼はキャンプにいるすべての人に支払うために何千ドルもの現金を運んでいるので、誰かがそれを奪おうとするかもしれない。
But those men had guns enough on them and in the buggy.	しかし、あの人たちは銃を十分に持っていたし、馬車にも銃があった。
They had no need to be afraid.”	彼らは恐れる必要はなかった。」

As Pa went back to the store, Laura saw the handle of his revolver showing from his hip pocket.	パパが店に戻ったとき、ローラはパパのヒップポケットからリボルバーの柄が出ているのを見かけた。
She knew he was not afraid, and she looked at his rifle over the door and his shotgun standing in the corner.	ローラはパパが恐れていないことを知っていたので、ドアの上のライフルと隅に立っているショットガンを見た。
Ma could use those guns.	ママはこれらの銃を使うことができた。
There was no fear that robbers could get that money.	強盗がそのお金を盗む心配はなかった。

That night Laura woke up often, and often she heard Pa stirring too, in the bunk on the other side of the curtain.	その夜、ローラはよく目が覚め、カーテンの向こう側の寝台でパパもよく動いているのを聞いた。
The night seemed darker and full of strange sounds, because that money was in the flour-sack.	その夜は、小麦粉の袋にお金が入っていたため、暗く、奇妙な音でいっぱいだった。

“Some of the men don’t seem to understand why they got only two weeks’ pay,” he said.	「何人かの男たちはなぜ2週間分の給料しかもらえないのか理解していないようだ」と彼は言った。

Some of them can’t get it through their thick heads that they’ve got to wait two weeks for their pay.	彼らの中には、給料をもらうまで2週間待たなければならないことを理解できない者もいる。

“Don’t fret about it, Charles,” said Ma.	「心配しないで、チャールズ」とママは言った。

“And they don’t blame you, do they, Pa?”	「そして、彼らはパパを責めていないよね?」
said Mary.	とメアリーは言った。

“That’s the worst of it, Mary. I don’t know,” Pa answered.	「それが最悪なんだよ、メアリー。わからないんだ」とパパは答えた。
“Anyway I’ve got some bookwork to do at the office.”	「とにかく、事務所でやらなければならない事務処理があるんだ。」

The supper dishes were soon washed, and Ma sat rocking Grace to sleep, with Carrie snuggled beside her.	夕食の食器はすぐに洗われ、ママはグレースを揺すって寝かしつけ、キャリーは彼女のそばに寄り添っていた。
Laura sat beside Mary in the doorway, watching the light fade from the waters of the lake.	ローラは戸口でメアリーの隣に座り、湖の水面から光が消えていくのを眺めていた。
She was seeing it out loud for Mary.	彼女はメアリーのためにそれを声に出して見ていた。

“The last light is shining pale in the middle of the smooth lake.	「最後の光が滑らかな湖の真ん中に青白く輝いている。
All around it the water is dusky, where the ducks sleep, and the land is black beyond.	その周りの水はすべて薄暗く、アヒルが眠り、その向こうの陸地は真っ暗だ。

Pa has lighted his lamp.	パパはランプをつけた。

Ma!” she cried out.	ママ!」と彼女は叫んだ。
“There’s a big crowd of men—look.”	「大勢の男性がいるよ、見て」

The men were crowding around the store.	男性たちは店の周りに群がっていた。
They did not say anything, and there was not even any sound of their feet on the grass.	彼らは何も言わず、草を踏む足音さえしなかった。
Only the dark mass of men was growing larger very fast.	ただ、暗い塊の男性たちが急速に大きくなっていくだけだった。

Ma rose quickly and laid Grace on the bed.	ママは素早く立ち上がり、グレースをベッドに寝かせた。
Then she came and looked out over Laura’s head and Mary’s.	それから彼女は来て、ローラとメアリーの頭越しに外を見た。
She spoke softly.	彼女は優しく話した。
“Come inside, girls.”	「中に入りなさい、娘たち」

When they obeyed her she shut the door, all but a crack.	彼女たちが従うと、彼女はドアを閉めたが、少しだけ開けていた。
She stood looking out through the crack.	彼女は立って、隙間から外を見た。

The crowd was close around the store.	群衆は店の周りに密集していた。
Two men went up the step and pounded on the door.	2人の男が階段を上り、ドアを叩いた。

The crowd was quiet.	群衆は静かだった。
The whole dusky twilight was quiet for a moment.	薄暗い夕暮れ全体が一瞬静かになった。

Then the men pounded again on the door and one called, “Open the door, Ingalls!”

それから男たちは再びドアを叩き、1人が「ドアを開けろ、インガルス!」と呼びかけた。

The door opened, and there in the lamplight stood Pa.	ドアが開き、ランプの光の中にパパが立っていた。
He shut the door behind him, and the two men who had knocked stepped backward into the crowd.	彼は後ろのドアを閉め、ノックした2人の男は群衆の中へ後退した。
Pa stood on the step with his hands in his pockets.	パパはポケットに手を入れて階段に立っていた。

“Well, boys, what is it?” he asked quietly.

「さて、皆さん、どうしたんですか?」と彼は静かに尋ねた。

A voice came from the crowd.	群衆から声がした。
“We want our pay.”	「給料を払ってほしい」

Other voices shouted.	他の声が叫んだ。
“Our full pay!”	「全額払ってほしい!」
“Come across with that two weeks’ pay you kept back!”	「差し引いた2週間分の給料を払え!」
“We’re going to get our pay!”	「給料をもらうぞ!」

“You’ll have it two weeks from now, just as soon as I can get your time-checks made out,” said Pa.

「2週間後には支払われるよ、タイムカードを作成したらすぐにね」とパパは言った。

The voices shouted again.	声が再び叫んだ。
“We want it now!”	「今すぐ欲しいんだ!」
“Quit stalling!”	「ぐずぐずするな!」
“We’re going to have it now!”	「今すぐもらうぞ!」

“I can’t pay you now, boys,” Pa said.	「今は払えないよ、君たち」パパは言った。
“I won’t have the money to pay you till the paymaster comes again.”	「給与支払者が来るまで君たちに支払うお金がない」

“Open up the store!” somebody answered.	「店を開けろ!」誰かが答えた。
Then the whole crowd yelled.	すると群衆全体が叫んだ。
“That’s it! That’s good enough— Open the store!	「それだ! それで十分だー店を開けろ!
Open up that store!”	店を開けろ!」

“No, boys. I won’t do that,” Pa said coolly.	「いや、君たち。それはしないよ」パパは冷静に言った。
“Come in tomorrow morning, and I’ll let each man have all the goods he wants, on his account.”	「明日の朝来てください。そうすれば、各自が欲しい品物をすべて自分の勘定で手に入れることができます。」

“Open up that store or we’ll open it for you!” came a shout.	「店を開けろ、さもないと私たちが開けるぞ!」と叫び声がした。
A growl rumbled from the crowd.	群衆からうなり声が聞こえた。
The whole mass of men moved in toward Pa as if that growl moved them.	群衆全体が、そのうなり声に動かされるかのようにパパに向かって動いた。

Laura ducked under Ma’s arm, but Ma’s hand clenched on her shoulder and pulled her back.

ローラはママの腕の下をくぐったが、ママの手が彼女の肩をつかんで引き戻した。

“Oh, let me go! They’ll hurt Pa!	「ああ、行かせて! パパを傷つけるよ!
Let me go, they’ll hurt Pa!” Laura screamed in a whisper.	行かせて、パパを傷つけるよ!」ローラはささやき声で叫んだ。

“Be still!” Ma told her in a voice Laura had never heard before.

「じっとして!」ママはローラが聞いたことがない声で言った。

“Stand back, boys.	「下がれ、少年たち。
Don’t crowd too close,” said Pa.	あまり近寄るな」とパパは言った。
Laura heard his cold voice and stood trembling.	ローラは彼の冷たい声を聞いて震えながら立っていた。

Then she heard another voice behind the crowd.	それから彼女は群衆の後ろで別の声を聞いた。
It was deep and strong, not loud, but plainly heard.	それは深く強く、大きくはなかったが、はっきりと聞こえた。
“What’s up, boys?”	「どうしたんだ、少年たち?」

In the dark Laura could not see the red shirt, but only Big Jerry was so tall.	暗闇の中でローラは赤いシャツを見ることができなかったが、ビッグ・ジェリーだけがそんなに背が高かった。
He stood head and shoulders above the shadowy figures of the crowd.	彼は群衆の影のような人影より頭と肩が上に突き出ていた。
Beyond them in the dusk was a pale blur that would be the white horse.	彼らの向こうの夕暮れの中に白い馬であろう淡いぼやけたものがいた。
A confusion of voices answered Big Jerry, then he laughed.	混乱した声がビッグ・ジェリーに答え、それから彼は笑った。
His laugh was big and booming.	彼の笑い声は大きくて響き渡った。

“You fools!” Big Jerry laughed.	「あなたら馬鹿だな!」ビッグ・ジェリーは笑った。
“What’s the fuss about?	「何を騒いでるんだ?
You want the goods out of the store?	店から品物が欲しいのか?
Well, tomorrow we’ll take what we want of them.	明日、彼らから欲しいものを取ろう。
They’ll still be here.	彼らはまだここにいる。
Nobody’ll stop us when we get started.”	私たちが始めたら誰も止められない。」

Laura was hearing rough language.	ローラは乱暴な言葉を耳にしていた。
Big Jerry was using it.	ビッグ・ジェリーが使っていた。
What he said was all mixed with swear words and with other words she had never heard.	彼が言ったことはすべて彼女が聞いたことがない言葉と誓いの言葉が混ざっていた。
She hardly heard them now, because she felt all broken up;	彼女はほとんど聞こえなかった、なぜなら彼女はすべてが壊れたように感じたからだ。
she felt as if everything was smashed like a dropped plate when Big Jerry took sides against Pa.	ビッグ・ジェリーがパパに反対したとき、彼女はすべてが落とした皿のように壊れたように感じた。

The crowd was all around Big Jerry now.	群衆は今ビッグ・ジェリーの周りにいた。
He was calling some of the men by their names and talking to them about drinking and playing cards.	彼は男性の何人かを名前で呼び、飲酒やトランプについて話していた。
Some of the crowd went with him toward the bunkhouse, then the rest of it broke into smaller pieces and scattered away in the dark.	群衆の一部は彼と一緒にバンクハウスに向かい、残りは小さな塊に分かれて暗闇の中に散らばった。

Ma shut the door.	ママはドアを閉めた。
“Bedtime, girls,” she said.	「寝る時間よ、娘たち」と彼女は言った。

Laura went trembling to bed as Ma told her to do.	ローラはママに言われた通り、震えながらベッドに行った。
Pa did not come.	パパは来なかった。
Now and then she heard an outbreak of loud, rough voices from the camp, and sometimes singing.	時々、彼女はキャンプから大声で荒々しい声が聞こえ、時には歌声も聞こえた。
She knew she would not sleep till Pa came.	彼女はパパが来るまで眠れないだろうと分かっていた。

Then her eyes opened suddenly.	すると、彼女の目が突然開いた。
It was morning.	朝だった。

Beyond Silver Lake the sky was burning gold and one line of red cloud lay across it;	シルバー湖の向こうでは空が金色に輝き、一筋の赤い雲が横たわっていた。
the lake was rosy, and wild birds flew up clamoring.	湖はバラ色で、野鳥が騒ぎながら飛び立った。
The camp was noisy too.	キャンプも騒がしかった。
All around the boarding shanty the men were gathered in a milling crowd, talking excitedly.	下宿小屋の周りには、男たちが集まって興奮して話していた。

Ma and Laura stood outdoors at the corner of the shanty watching.	ママとローラは小屋の角に立って外を眺めていた。
They heard a shout and saw Big Jerry jump onto his white horse.	叫び声が聞こえ、ビッグ・ジェリーが白い馬に飛び乗るのが見えた。

“Come on, boys!” he shouted.	「さあ、みんな!」と彼は叫んだ。
“All aboard for the fun!”	「みんな乗って、楽しみましょう!」

The white horse reared and whirled and reared again.	白い馬は後ろ足で立ち上がり、ぐるぐる回り、また後ろ足で立ち上がった。
Big Jerry gave a wild whoop, the white horse broke into a run, and away they went over the prairie toward the west.	ビッグ・ジェリーは野生の雄叫びを上げ、白い馬は走り出し、彼らは西に向かって大草原を越えて去っていった。
All the men rushed to the stable and in a minute man after man was on his horse and following Big Jerry.	男たちはみんな馬小屋に駆けつけ、すぐに次から次へと馬に乗り、ビッグ・ジェリーを追いかけていった。
The whole crowd went streaming away on the horses and was gone.	群衆は馬に乗って流れ去り、いなくなった。

A great, cool quietness came over the camp and over Laura and Ma.	キャンプ場とローラとママの上に、大きくて涼しい静けさがやってきた。
“Well!” Ma said.	「まあ!」とママは言った。

They saw Pa walking from the store toward the boarding shanty.	パパが店から下宿屋に向かって歩いてくるのが見えた。
Fred, the foreman, came out of it and met him.	監督のフレッドがそこから出てきて、パパに会った。
They talked a minute.	彼らは少し話した。
Then Fred went to the stable, got on his horse, and galloped away to the west.	それからフレッドは馬小屋に行き、馬に乗り、西に向かって疾走した。

Pa was chuckling.	パパはくすくす笑っていた。
Ma said she did not know what there was to laugh about.	ママは、何がそんなに可笑しいのかわからないと言った。

“That Big Jerry!” Pa’s laugh rang out.	「あのビッグ・ジェリー!」パパの笑い声が響いた。
“By gum, if he didn’t lead ’em all away to do their devilment somewhere else!”	「おいおい、あいつはみんなを連れてどこか別の場所で悪さをしに行ったんだな!」

“Where?” Ma asked sharply.

「どこに?」ママは鋭く尋ねた。

Pa was sober then.	パパはその時しらふだった。
“There’s a riot at Stebbins’ camp.	「ステビンズのキャンプで暴動が起きている。
Everybody’s flocking there from all the camps.	みんながすべてのキャンプからそこに群がっている。
You’re right, Caroline, it’s no laughing matter.”	君の言う通りだ、キャロライン、笑い事ではない。」

All day the camp was quiet.	キャンプは一日中静かだった。
Laura and Mary did not go for their walk.	ローラとメアリーは散歩に出かけなかった。
There was no telling what might be happening at Stebbins’ camp, nor when that dangerous crowd would come back.	ステビンズのキャンプではどんなことが起こっているのか、またあの危険な群衆がいつ戻ってくるのか、誰にも分からなかった。
Ma’s eyes were anxious all day, her lips were tight, and now and then she sighed without knowing it.	ママの目は一日中不安そうで、唇は固く結ばれ、時々無意識にため息をついた。

After dark the men came.	暗くなってから男たちがやってきた。
But they rode into camp more quietly than they had left it.	しかし、彼らは出発した時よりも静かにキャンプに戻ってきた。
They ate supper in the boarding shanty and then they went to bed in the bunkhouse.	彼らは下宿小屋で夕食を食べ、それから飯場に行って寝た。

Laura and Mary were still awake when Pa came late from the store.	パパが店から遅く帰ってきた時、ローラとメアリーはまだ起きていた。
They lay quiet in their bunk and heard Pa and Ma talking beyond the lamplit curtain.	彼らは寝台に静かに横たわり、ランプに照らされたカーテンの向こうでパパとママが話しているのを聞いた。

“Nothing to worry about now, Caroline,” Pa said.	「もう心配することは何もない、キャロライン」とパパは言った。

He yawned, and sat down to take off his boots.	彼はあくびをして、ブーツを脱ぐために腰を下ろした。

Was anybody hurt?” Ma asked.	誰か怪我をしたの?」とママは尋ねた。

“They strung up the paymaster,” said Pa.	「彼らは給与支払係を吊るし上げた」とパパは言った。
“And one man was hurt bad.	「そして一人の男がひどく怪我をした。
They put him in a lumber wagon and started back east with him to find a doctor.	彼らは彼を材木運搬車に乗せて、医者を探すために彼を連れて東に戻り始めた。
Don’t get so upset, Caroline.	そんなに動揺するな、キャロライン。
We better thank our stars we got off so easy.	こんなに簡単に降りられたのは幸運だった。
It’s all over.”	すべて終わった。」

“I don’t get upset till it is over,” Ma said.	「私は終わるまで動揺しないよ」とママは言った。
Her voice was shaking.	彼女の声は震えていた。

“Come here,” said Pa.	「こっちへ来なさい」とパパは言った。
Laura knew that now Ma was sitting on Pa’s knee.	ローラはママがパパの膝の上に座っていることを知っていた。
“There, I know you don’t,” he said to her.	「そう、君はそうしないことを知っている」と彼は彼女に言った。
“Never mind, Caroline.	「気にするな、キャロライン。
The grading’s pretty near done, these camps’ll be closing down and gone before long, and next summer we’ll be settled on the homestead.”	整地はほぼ終わり、これらのキャンプは閉鎖されてまもなくなくなり、来年の夏には私たちは農場を構えているだろう。」

“When are you going to pick it out?” said Ma.

I don’t have a minute away from the store till then,” said Pa.	それまでは店から離れる時間がない」とパパは言った。

“Yes, I know, Charles.	「ええ、知っているよ、チャールズ。
What did they do about the men that—killed the paymaster?”	給与支払係を殺した男たちをどうしたんだい?」

“They didn’t kill him,” Pa said.	「殺しはしなかった」とパパは言った。
“It was this way.	「こうだったんだ。
You see, it’s the same at Stebbins’ camp as here;	ほら、ここと同じようにステビンズのキャンプで、
the office is a lean-to at the back of the store.	事務所は店の裏の片流れ屋根の建物だ。
It has one door into the store and that’s all.	店につながるドアが一つあるだけで、それだけだ。
The paymaster stayed in the office with the money and kept the door locked.	給与係はお金と一緒に事務所にいて、ドアに鍵をかけていた。
