第15章: 歩道橋
Next day Laura was sure that Ma would not let her go to play in the creek.
次の日、ローラはママが小川で遊びに行かせてくれないだろうと確信していた。
It was still roaring, but more softly.
まだ轟音を立てていたが、もっと小さかった。
In the dugout she could hear it calling her.
掘っ立て小屋の中で、彼女はそれが自分を呼んでいるのを聞くことができた。
So Laura quietly slipped outdoors without saying anything to Ma.
だからローラはママに何も言わずに静かに外に出た。
The water was not so high now.
水は今はそれほど高くなかった。
It had gone down from the steps and Laura could see it foaming against the footbridge.
それは階段から下がっていて、ローラはそれが歩道橋にぶつかって泡立っているのを見ることができた。
Part of the plank was above the water.
厚板の一部が水の上にあった。
All winter the creek had been covered with ice;
冬の間ずっと小川は氷で覆われていた。
it had been motionless and still, never making a sound.
それは動かず、静かで、音を立てることはなかった。
Now it was running swiftly and making a joyful noise.
今ではそれは素早く流れ、楽しい音を立てていた。
Where it struck the edge of the plank it foamed up in white bubbles and laughed to itself.
厚板の端に当たった場所では白い泡が立ち、独り言を言っているようだった。
Laura took off her shoes and stockings and put them safely on the bottom step.
ローラは靴と靴下を脱いで、一番下の段に安全に置いた。
Then she walked out on the plank and stood watching the noisy water.
それから彼女は厚板の上を歩いて行き、騒がしい水を眺めて立った。
Drops splashed her bare feet and thin little waves ran around them.
水滴が彼女の素足に跳ね、小さな波が足の周りを走った。
She dabbled one foot in the swirling foam.
彼女は片足を渦巻く泡に浸した。
Then down she sat on the plank and plumped both legs into the water.
それから彼女は厚板に座り、両足を水に浸した。
The creek ran strong against them and she kicked against it.
小川は彼女の足に強く流れ、彼女はそれに逆らって蹴った。
That was fun!
楽しかった!
Now she was wet almost all over, but her whole skin wanted to be in the water.
彼女はもうほとんど全身が濡れていたが、肌全体が水の中に入りたがっていた。
She lay on her stomach and thrust her arms down on each side of the plank, deep into the fast current.
彼女はうつ伏せになって、厚板の両側に腕を突き出し、速い流れの奥深くに突っ込んだ。
But that was not enough.
しかし、それでは十分ではなかった。
She wanted to be really in the roaring, joyous creek.
彼女は本当に轟く、喜びに満ちた小川の中にいたかった。
She clasped her hands together under the plank and rolled off it.
彼女は厚板の下で両手を握り締め、厚板から転がり落ちた。
In that very instant, she knew the creek was not playing.
その瞬間、彼女は小川が遊びではないことを知った。
It was strong and terrible.
それは強く、恐ろしかった。
It seized her whole body and pulled it under the plank.
それは彼女の全身をつかみ、厚板の下に引っ張った。
Only her head was out, and one arm desperately across the narrow plank.
彼女の頭だけが外に出ており、片方の腕が必死に狭い厚板を横切っていた。
The water was pulling her and it was pushing, too.
水は彼女を引っ張り、また押しもした。
It was trying to drag her head under the plank.
それは彼女の頭を厚板の下に引きずり込もうとしていた。
Her chin held onto the edge and her arm clutched, while the water pulled hard at all the rest of her.
彼女の顎は端をつかみ、腕は握り締め、水は彼女の残りの部分を強く引っ張った。
It was not laughing now.
今は笑っていなかった。
No one knew where she was.
誰も彼女がどこにいるか知らなかった。
No one could hear her if she screamed for help.
彼女が助けを求めて叫んでも誰も彼女の声を聞くことができなかった。
The water roared loud and tugged at her, stronger and stronger.
水は大きな音を立てて彼女を強く引っ張った。
Laura kicked, but the water was stronger than her legs.
ローラは蹴ったが、水は彼女の足よりも強かった。
She got both arms across the plank and pulled, but the water pulled harder.
彼女は両腕で板を抱えて引っ張ったが、水はもっと強く引っ張った。
It pulled the back of her head down and it jerked as if it would jerk her in two.
それは彼女の頭の後ろを下に引っ張り、彼女を2つに引き裂くかのようにぐいと引っ張った。
It was cold.
寒かった。
The coldness soaked into her.
寒さが彼女に染み込んだ。
This was not like wolves or cattle.
これは狼や牛とは違っていた。
The creek was not alive.
小川は生きていなかった。
It was only strong and terrible and never stopping.
それはただ強く恐ろしく、決して止まらなかった。
It would pull her down and whirl her away, rolling and tossing her like a willow branch.
それは彼女を引きずり下ろして、彼女をぐるぐる回し、柳の枝のように彼女を転がして投げ飛ばすだろう。
It would not care.
それは気にしないだろう。
Her legs were tired, and her arms hardly felt the plank any more.
彼女の足は疲れ、腕はもはや厚板を感じることはほとんどなかった。
“I must get out. I must!” she thought.
「私は出なければならない。出なければならない!」と彼女は思った。
The creek’s roaring was in her head.
小川の轟音が彼女の頭の中にあった。
She kicked hard with both her feet and pulled hard with her arms, and then she was lying on the plank again.
彼女は両足で強く蹴り、腕で強く引っ張り、そしてまた厚板の上に横たわっていた。
The plank was solid under her stomach and under her face.
厚板は彼女のお腹の下と顔の下にしっかりしていた。
She lay on it and breathed and was glad it was solid.
彼女はその上に横たわり、息をつき、それがしっかりしていることを喜んだ。
When she moved, her head whirled.
彼女が動くと、頭がぐるぐるした。
She crawled off the plank.
彼女は厚板から這い降りた。
She took her shoes and her stockings and she climbed slowly up the muddy steps.
彼女は靴と靴下を手に取って、ゆっくりと泥だらけの階段を上った。
At the door of the dugout she stopped.
彼女は掘っ立て小屋の入り口で立ち止まった。
She did not know what to say to Ma.
彼女はママに何を言えばいいのか分からなかった。
After a while she went in.
しばらくして彼女は中に入った。
Just inside the door she stood still and water dripped off her.
彼女はドアのすぐ内側でじっと立って、水が滴り落ちた。
Ma was sewing.
ママは縫い物をしていた。
“Where have you been, Laura?” Ma asked, looking up.
「どこに行ってたの、ローラ?」ママは見上げて尋ねた。
Then she came quickly, saying: “My goodness! Turn around, quick!”
それから彼女は急いでやってきて言った。「まあ! 早く振り返って!」
She began unbuttoning Laura down the back.
彼女はローラの背中のボタンを外し始めた。
“What happened? Did you fall in the creek?”
「どうしたの? 小川に落ちたの?」
“No, ma’am,” Laura said.
「いいえ」とローラは言った。
“I—I went in.”
「私は、私は入りました」
Ma listened and went on undressing Laura and rubbing her hard all over with a towel.
ママは聞きながらローラの服を脱がせ、タオルで全身を強くこすり続けた。
She did not say a word even when Laura had told her everything.
ローラが全てを話しても、ママは一言も言わなかった。
Laura’s teeth chattered, and Ma wrapped a quilt around her and sat her close to the stove.
ローラは歯がガタガタ鳴り、ママはキルトを巻いてストーブの近くに座らせた。
At last Ma said: “Well, Laura, you have been very naughty and I think you knew it all the time.
ついにママは言った。「ローラ、あなたはとてもいたずらをしました。そして、あなたはずっとそれを知っていたんだと思います。
But I can’t punish you.
でも、あなたを罰することはできません。
I can’t even scold you.
あなたを叱ることさえできません。
You came near being drowned.”
あなたは溺れそうになったのです。」
Laura did not say anything.
ローラは何も言わなかった。
“You won’t go near the creek again till Pa or I say you may, and that won’t be till the water goes down,” said Ma.
「あなたはパパか私が行ってもいいと言うまで、また小川の近くに行ってはいけません、そしてそれは水が引くまではないでしょう」とママは言った。
“No’m,” Laura said.
「いいえ」とローラは言った。
The creek would go down.
小川は引くだろう。
It would be a gentle, pleasant place to play in again.
そこはまた遊ぶのに穏やかで楽しい場所になるだろう。
But nobody could make it do that.
しかし、誰もそれをさせることはできなかった。
Nobody could make it do anything.
誰もそれをさせることはできなかった。
Laura knew now that there were things stronger than anybody.
ローラは今、誰よりも強いことがあることを知った。
But the creek had not got her.
しかし、小川は彼女を捕まえなかった。
It had not made her scream and it could not make her cry.
それは彼女を悲鳴を上げさせなかったし、泣かせることもできなかった。
