Chapter 10: Cattle in the Hay
第10章: 干し草の中の牛
Summer was gone, winter was coming, and now it was time for Pa to make a trip to town.
夏が終わり、冬がやってきて、パパが町へ行く時が来た。
Here in Minnesota, town was so near that Pa would be gone only one day, and Ma was going with him.
ここミネソタでは、町がとても近いので、パパは一日だけ出かけ、ママも一緒に行くことになった。
She took Carrie, because Carrie was too little to be left far from Ma.
キャリーはママから離れるには小さすぎるので、ママはキャリーを連れて行った。
But Mary and Laura were big girls.
しかし、メアリーとローラは大きな女の子だった。
Mary was going on nine and Laura was going on eight, and they could stay at home and take care of everything while Pa and Ma were gone.
メアリーは9歳、ローラは8歳で、パパとママがいない間は家にいて、すべての面倒を見ることができた。
For going-to-town, Ma made a new dress for Carrie, from the pink calico that Laura had worn when she was little.
町に行くために、ママはローラが小さい頃に着ていたピンクのカリコからキャリーのために新しいドレスを作った。
There was enough of it to make Carrie a little pink sunbonnet.
キャリーに小さなピンクのサンボンネットを作るのに十分な量があった。
Carrie’s hair had been in curl-papers all night.
キャリーの髪は一晩中カール紙に包まれていた。
It hung in long, golden, round curls, and when Ma tied the pink sunbonnet strings under Carrie’s chin, Carrie looked like a rose.
それは長く、金色の、丸いカールで垂れ下がっていて、ママがキャリーのあごの下にピンクのサンボンネットの紐を結ぶと、キャリーはバラのように見えた。
Ma wore her hoopskirts and her best dress, the beautiful challis with little strawberries on it, that she had worn to the sugaring-dance at Grandma’s, long ago in the Big Woods.
ママはフープスカートと一番いいドレスを着ていた。それは、ずっと前にビッグウッズでおばあちゃんの家で行われたシュガーリングダンスに着ていた、小さなイチゴが描かれた美しいシャリスだった。
“Now be good girls, Laura and Mary,” was the last thing she said.
「ローラとメアリー、いい子にしてね」というのが彼女の最後の言葉だった。
She was on the wagon seat, with Carrie beside her.
彼女は馬車の座席に座り、キャリーを横に抱いていた。
Their lunch was in the wagon.
彼らの昼食は馬車の中にあった。
Pa took up the ox goad.
パパは牛追い棒を手に取った。
“We’ll be back before sundown,” he promised.
「日没までには戻るよ」と彼は約束した。
“Hi-oop!” he said to Pete and Bright.
「ハイ、オッ!」と彼はピートとブライトに言った。
The big ox and the little one leaned into their yoke and the wagon started.
大きな牛と小さな牛はくびきに体重をかけて、馬車は動き出した。
“Good-bye, Pa! Good-bye, Ma!
「さようなら、パパ! さようなら、ママ!
Good-bye, Carrie, good-bye!”
さようなら、キャリー、さようなら!」
Laura and Mary called after it.
ローラとメアリーはその後ろ姿に呼びかけた。
Slowly the wagon went away.
ゆっくりと荷馬車は去っていった。
Pa walked beside the oxen.
パパは牛の横を歩いていた。
Ma and Carrie, the wagon, and Pa all grew smaller, till they were gone into the prairie.
ママとキャリー、荷馬車、パパはみんな小さくなり、ついに大草原に消えていった。
The prairie seemed big and empty then, but there was nothing to be afraid of.
大草原は大きくて空っぽに見えたが、怖がることは何もなかった。
There were no wolves and no Indians.
狼もインディアンもいなかった。
Besides, Jack stayed close to Laura.
その上、ジャックはローラのそばにいた。
Jack was a responsible dog.
ジャックは責任感のある犬だった。
He knew that he must take care of everything when Pa was away.
彼はパパがいない時は全ての面倒を見なければならないことを知っていた。
That morning Mary and Laura played by the creek, among the rushes.
その朝、メアリーとローラは川のほとりで、イグサの中で遊んだ。
They did not go near the swimming-hole.
彼女たちは水泳場には近づかなかった。
They did not touch the straw-stack.
彼女たちは麦わらの山には触れなかった。
At noon they ate the corn dodgers and molasses and drank the milk that Ma had left for them.
正午に彼女たちはママが残してくれたコーン・ドジャーと糖蜜を食べ、牛乳を飲んだ。
They washed their tin cups and put them away.
彼女たちはブリキのコップを洗って片付けた。
Then Laura wanted to play on the big rock, but Mary wanted to stay in the dugout.
それからローラは大きな岩の上で遊びたかったが、メアリーは掘っ立て小屋に残りたかった。
She said that Laura must stay there, too.
彼女はローラもそこに残らなければならないと言った。
“Ma can make me,” Laura said, “but you can’t.”
「ママは私をそうさせることができるけど、あなたにはできないよ」とローラは言った。
“I can so,” said Mary.
「できるよ」とメアリーは言った。
“When Ma’s not here, you have to do what I say because I’m older.”
「ママがいない時は、私が年上だから私の言うことを聞かなければならないよ」
“You have to let me have my way because I’m littler,” said Laura.
「私は小さいから、私のしたいようにさせなきゃいけないよ」とローラは言った。
“That’s Carrie, it isn’t you,” Mary told her.
「それはキャリーで、あなたではないよ」とメアリーは彼女に言った。
“If you don’t do what I say, I’ll tell Ma.”
「私の言うことを聞かないなら、ママに言うよ」
“I guess I can play where I want to!”
「私は自分の好きなところで遊べると思うよ!」
said Laura.
とローラは言った。
Mary grabbed at her, but Laura was too quick.
メアリーは彼女をつかまえようとしたが、ローラは素早すぎた。
She darted out, and she would have run up the path, but Jack was in the way.
彼女は飛び出し、小道を駆け上がっただろうが、ジャックが邪魔だった。
He stood stiff, looking across the creek.
彼は小川の向こうを見つめながら、硬直して立っていた。
Laura looked too, and she screeched, “Mary!”
ローラも見てみると、「メアリー!」と金切り声を上げた。
The cattle were all around Pa’s hay-stacks.
牛たちはパパの干し草の山の周りにいた。
They were eating the hay.
彼らは干し草を食べていた。
They were tearing into the stacks with their horns, gouging out hay, eating it and trampling over it.
彼らは角で干し草の山を引き裂き、干し草を掘り出し、それを食べて踏みつけている。
There would be nothing left to feed Pete and Bright and Spot in the winter-time.
冬にピートとブライトとスポットに与えるものが何も残らないだろう。
Jack knew what to do.
ジャックは何をすべきか知っていた。
He ran growling down the steps to the footbridge.
彼は唸りながら歩道橋への階段を駆け下りた。
Pa was not there to save the hay-stacks;
パパは干し草の山を守るためにそこにいなかった。
they must drive those cattle away.
彼らは牛を追い払わなければならない。
“Oh, we can’t! We can’t!” Mary said, scared.
「ああ、できないよ! できないよ!」とメアリーは怖がって言った。
But Laura ran behind Jack and Mary came after her.
しかし、ローラはジャックの後ろを走り、メアリーは彼女の後を追った。
They went over the creek and past the spring.
彼らは小川を渡り、泉を通り過ぎた。
They came up on the prairie and now they saw the fierce, big cattle quite near.
彼らは大草原に上がってきて、今や彼らは激しく大きな牛をかなり近くで見た。
The long horns were gouging, the thick legs trampling and jostling, the wide mouths bawling.
長い角はえぐり、太い脚は踏みつけ、押し合い、大きな口はわめいていた。
Mary was too scared to move.
メアリーは怖くて動けなかった。
Laura was too scared to stand still.
ローラは怖くてじっと立っていられなかった。
She jerked Mary along.
彼女はメアリーをぐいと引っ張った。
She saw a stick, and grabbed it up and ran yelling at the cattle.
彼女は棒を見つけ、それをつかんで牛に向かって叫びながら走った。
Jack ran at them, growling.
ジャックは唸りながら彼らに向かって走った。
A big red cow swiped at him with her horns, but he jumped behind her.
大きな赤い牛が角で彼を払いのけたが、彼は彼女の後ろに飛び込んだ。
She snorted and galloped.
彼女は鼻を鳴らして疾走した。
All the other cattle ran humping and jostling after her, and Jack and Laura and Mary ran after them.
他の牛たちは皆、彼女の後ろを押し合いへし合い走り、ジャックとローラとメアリーは彼らの後ろを走った。
But they could not chase those cattle away from the hay-stacks.
しかし、彼らは牛たちを干し草の山から追い払うことはできなかった。
The cattle ran around and around and in between the stacks, jostling and bawling, tearing off hay and trampling it.
牛たちは干し草の山の周りをぐるぐる回り、干し草をはぎ取って踏みつけ、押し合いへし合い、わめきちらした。
More and more hay slid off the stacks.
ますます多くの干し草が山から滑り落ちた。
Laura ran panting and yelling, waving her stick.
ローラは息を切らして叫びながら走り、棒を振り回した。
The faster she ran, the faster the cattle went, black and brown and red, brindle and spotted cattle, big and with awful horns, and they would not stop wasting the hay.
彼女が速く走れば走るほど、牛たちも速く走り、黒や茶色や赤、虎毛や斑点のある牛、大きくて恐ろしい角を持った牛たちは、干し草を無駄にするのをやめようとしなかった。
Some tried to climb over the toppling stacks.
何頭かは倒れかけた干し草の山をよじ登ろうとした。
Laura was hot and dizzy.
ローラは暑くてめまいがした。
Her hair unbraided and blew in her eyes.
彼女の髪は三つ編みがほどけて目に吹き付けた。
Her throat was rough from yelling, but she kept on yelling, running, and waving her stick.
彼女の喉は叫びすぎて荒れていたが、彼女は叫び続け、走り続け、棒を振り続けた。
She was too scared to hit one of those big, horned cows.
彼女は怖くて、角のある大きな牛を打つことはできなかった。
More and more hay kept coming down and faster and faster they trampled over it.
ますます多くの干し草が降りてきて、牛たちはますます速くそれを踏みつけた。
Suddenly Laura turned around and ran the other way.
突然ローラは向きを変えて反対方向に走った。
She faced the big red cow coming around a hay-stack.
彼女は干し草の山の周りからやってくる大きな赤い牛と向き合った。
The huge legs and shoulders and terrible horns were coming fast.
巨大な脚と肩と恐ろしい角が速く近づいてきた。
Laura could not scream now.
ローラは今は叫べなかった。
But she jumped at that cow and waved her stick.
しかし彼女はその牛に飛びかかり、棒を振り回した。
The cow tried to stop, but all the other cattle were coming behind her and she couldn’t.
牛は止まろうとしたが、他の牛がみんな後ろから来ていたので止まれなかった。
She swerved and ran away across the ploughed ground, all the others galloping after her.
牛は方向を変えて耕された地面を横切って逃げ、他の牛はみんなその後を追って疾走した。
Jack and Laura and Mary chased them, farther and farther from the hay.
ジャックとローラとメアリーは干し草からどんどん遠ざかりながら牛を追いかけた。
Far into the high prairie grasses they chased those cattle.
彼らは高く生い茂った草原の奥深くまで牛を追いかけた。
Johnny Johnson rose out of the prairie, rubbing his eyes.
ジョニー・ジョンソンが草原から立ち上がり、目をこすった。
He had been lying asleep in a warm hollow of grass.
彼は草の暖かいくぼみに横になって眠っていた。
“Johnny! Johnny!” Laura screeched.
「ジョニー! ジョニー!」ローラは金切り声を上げた。
“Wake up and watch the cattle!”
「起きて牛を見て!」
“You’d better!”
「そうした方がいいよ!」
Mary told him.
メアリーは彼に言った。
Johnny Johnson looked at the cattle grazing in the deep grass, and he looked at Laura and Mary and Jack.
ジョニー・ジョンソンは深い草の中で草を食む牛を見て、ローラとメアリーとジャックを見た。
He did not know what had happened and they could not tell him because the only words he knew were Norwegian.
彼は何が起こったのか分からず、彼が知っている言葉はノルウェー語だけだったので、彼らは彼に伝えることができなかった。
They went back through the high grass that dragged at their trembling legs.
彼らは震える足を引きずりながら背の高い草の中を戻っていった。
They were glad to drink at the spring.
彼らは泉で飲むことができ嬉しかった。
They were glad to be in the quiet dugout and sit down to rest.
彼らは静かな掘っ立て小屋にいて、座って休むことができ嬉しかった。
