Chapter 40: The Fourth Day

第40章: 4日目

In the morning those sounds were gone from the wind.	朝には、そういった音は風から消えていた。
It was blowing with a steady wailing scream and the house stood still.	風は絶え間なく悲鳴を上げながら吹き、家は静かに立っていた。
But the roaring fire in the stove gave hardly any heat.	しかし、ストーブの中の燃え盛る火はほとんど熱を発しなかった。

“The cold is worse,” Ma said.	「寒さはもっとひどいよ」とママは言った。
“Don’t try to do the housework properly.	「家事をきちんとやろうとしなくていいのよ。
Wrap up in your shawls and keep Carrie with you close to the stove.”	ショールを着て、キャリーをストーブの近くに置いておきなさい。」

Soon after Ma came back from the stable, the frost on the eastern window glowed faintly yellow.	ママが馬小屋から戻ってすぐに、東の窓の霜がかすかに黄色く光った。
Laura ran to breathe on it and scratch away the ice until she made a peep-hole.	ローラはそこに息を吹きかけ、のぞき穴ができるまで氷を削り取った。
Outdoors the sun was shining!	外では太陽が輝いていた!

Ma looked out, then Mary and Laura took turns looking out at the snow blowing in waves over the ground.	ママが外を眺め、それからメアリーとローラが交代で地面を波打つように吹き付ける雪を眺めた。
The sky looked like ice.	空は氷のようだった。
Even the air looked cold above that fast-blowing flood of snow, and the sunshine that came through the peep-hole was no warmer than a shadow.	あの吹き付ける雪の洪水の上にある空気さえ冷たく見え、のぞき穴から差し込む日差しは影よりも暖かくはなかった。

Sidewise from the peep-hole, Laura glimpsed something dark.	のぞき穴の横から、ローラは何か暗いものをちらっと見た。
A furry big animal was wading deep in the blowing snow.	毛むくじゃらの大きな動物が吹き付ける雪の中を深く歩いていた。
A bear, she thought.	熊だ、と彼女は思った。
It shambled behind the corner of the house and darkened the front window.	それは家の角の背後をよろよろと歩き、正面の窓を暗くした。

“Ma!” she cried.	「ママ!」と彼女は叫んだ。
The door opened, the snowy, furry animal came in.	ドアが開き、雪まみれの毛むくじゃらの動物が入ってきた。
Pa’s eyes looked out of its face.	パパの目がその顔から覗いた。
Pa’s voice said, “Have you been good girls while I was gone?”	パパの声がした、「私がいない間、いい子にしていたかい?」

Ma ran to him.	ママは彼に駆け寄った。
Laura and Mary and Carrie ran, crying and laughing.	ローラとメアリーとキャリーは泣きながら笑いながら走った。
Ma helped him out of his coat.	ママは彼がコートを脱ぐのを手伝った。
The fur was full of snow that showered on the floor.	毛皮は雪でいっぱいで、床に降り注いだ。
Pa let the coat drop, too.	パパもコートを落とした。

“Charles! You’re frozen!”	「チャールズ! 凍えちゃったよ!」
Ma said.	ママは言った。

“Just about,” said Pa.	「ほとんど」パパは言った。
“And I’m hungry as a wolf.	「そして狼のようにお腹が空いた。
Let me sit down by the fire, Caroline, and feed me.”	火のそばに座らせて、キャロライン、そして私に食べさせてくれ。」

His face was thin and his eyes large.	彼の顔は細く、目は大きかった。
He sat shivering, close to the oven, and said he was only cold, not frost-bitten.	彼は震えながらオーブンの近くに座り、ただ寒いだけで凍傷ではないと言った。
Ma quickly warmed some of the bean broth and gave it to him.	ママは急いで豆のスープを温めて彼に与えた。

“That’s good,” he said.	「おいしい」と彼は言った。

Ma pulled off his boots and he put his feet up to the heat from the oven.

“Charles,” Ma asked, “did you— Were you—” She stood smiling with her mouth trembling.

“Now, Caroline, don’t you ever worry about me,” said Pa.	「キャロライン、私のことを心配するな」パパは言った。

He lifted Carrie to his knee, and put an arm around Laura, and the other around Mary.	彼はキャリーを膝に抱き上げ、片方の腕をローラに、もう片方の腕をメアリーに回した。
“What did you think, Mary?”	「メアリー、どう思った?」

“I thought you would come,” Mary answered.

「パパは来てくれると思ってた」メアリーは答えた。

“That’s the girl! And you, Laura?”

「そうこなくっちゃ! ローラは?」

“I didn’t think you were with Mr. Fitch telling stories,” said Laura.	「パパがフィッチさんとおしゃべりしてるとは思わなかった」ローラは言った。
“I—I kept wishing hard.”	「私、ずっと強く願ってたの」

“There you are, Caroline!	「キャロライン、いたのか!
How could a fellow fail to get home?” Pa asked Ma.	どうして家に戻れないなんてことがあるんだ?」パパはママに尋ねた。
“Give me some more of that broth, and I’ll tell you all about it.”	「そのスープもう少しくれ、そうしたら全部話すよ」

They waited while he rested, and ate bean broth with bread, and drank hot tea.	彼が休んでいる間、彼らは待って、豆のスープとパンを食べ、熱いお茶を飲んだ。
His hair and his beard were wet with snow melting in them.	彼の髪と髭は雪が溶けて濡れていた。
Ma dried them with a towel.	ママはタオルでそれらを乾かした。

“Caroline, do you know what this weather means?	「キャロライン、この天気が何を意味するか知っているか?

“Does it, Charles?” said Ma.

“We won’t have any grasshoppers next summer.	「来年の夏はバッタは出ない。
They say in town that grasshoppers come only when the summers are hot and dry and the winters are mild.	町では、バッタは夏が暑くて乾燥していて、冬が穏やかな時にしか来ないと言う。
We are getting so much snow now that we’re bound to have fine crops next year.”	今年は雪が多いので、来年はきっと良い作物がとれるだろう。」

“That’s good, Charles,” Ma said, quietly.

「それはよかったよ、チャールズ」とママは静かに言った。

“Well, they were talking about all this in the store, but I knew I ought to start home.	「店ではみんなこんなことを話していたが、私は家に向かわなければならないとわかっていた。
Just as I was leaving, Fitch showed me the buffalo coat.	私が帰ろうとした時、フィッチがバッファローのコートを見せてくれた。
He got it cheap from a man who went east on the last train running, and had to have money to buy his ticket.	彼は、走っている最後の列車で東に行った男から安く手に入れ、切符を買うためにお金が必要だった。
Fitch said I could have the coat for ten dollars.	フィッチは、私が10ドルでコートを買えると言った。
Ten dollars is a lot of money, but—”	10ドルは大金だが、」

“I’m glad you got the coat, Charles,” said Ma.

“As it turned out, it’s lucky I did, though I didn’t know it then.	「結果的には、その時は知らなかったけど、買っておいてよかった。
But going to town, the wind went right through me.	でも町に行くと、風が私の体を突き抜けた。
It was cold enough to freeze the nose off a brass monkey.	真鍮の猿の鼻が凍るほど寒かった。

“As soon as I was out on the prairie I saw the cloud in the north-west, but it was so small and far away that I thought I could beat it home.	「大草原に出るとすぐに北西に雲が見えたが、とても小さくて遠くだったので、家に帰れると思った。

When a storm comes from the north-west, a man ought to be able to go straight north by keeping the wind on his left cheek.	嵐が北西から来たら、人は風を左頬に受けながら真北に行けるはずだ。
But a fellow can’t do anything like that in a blizzard.	しかし、ブリザードの中ではそんなことができるわけがない。

“Still, it seemed I ought to be able to walk straight ahead, even if I couldn’t see or tell directions.	「それでも、方向が見えなくても、真っ直ぐ歩けるはずだ。
So I kept on walking, straight ahead, I thought.	だから、私は歩き続けた、真っ直ぐに、と私は思った。
Till I knew I was lost.	迷子になったとわかるまで。

The only thing to do was to keep on going.	唯一できることは、歩き続けることだった。

“So I set myself to outwalk the storm.	「だから私は嵐を歩き抜こうと決めた。
I walked and walked.	私は歩き続けた。
I could not see any more than if I had been stone blind.	まるで盲目になったかのように何も見えなかった。
I could hear nothing but the wind.	風の音以外は何も聞こえなかった。
I kept on walking in that white blur.	私はその白いぼやけの中で歩き続けた。
I don’t know if you noticed, there seem to be voices howling and things screaming overhead, in a blizzard?”	気づいたかどうかわからないけど、吹雪の中、頭上で声が吠えたり、何かが叫んだりしているように聞こえるね?」

“Yes, Pa, I heard them!”	「はい、パパ、聞こえました!」
Laura said.	ローラは言った。

“So did I,” said Mary.	「私も」とメアリーは言った。
And Ma nodded.	そしてママはうなずいた。

“And balls of fire,” said Laura.

「そして火の玉」とローラは言った。

“Balls of fire?” Pa asked.

「火の玉?」パパは尋ねた。

“That will keep, Laura,” said Ma.	「それは取っておきましょう、ローラ」とママは言った。
“Go on, Charles. What did you do?”	「続けて、チャールズ。何をしたの?」

“I kept on walking,” Pa answered.	「歩き続けた」とパパは答えた。
“I walked till the white blur turned grey and then black, and I knew it was night.	「白いもやが灰色になり、それから黒くなるまで歩き、夜になったことが分かった。
I figured I had been walking four hours, and these blizzards last three days and nights.	4時間歩いたと計算した、そしてこのブリザードは3日3晩続く。
But I kept on walking.”	でも歩き続けた。」

Pa stopped, and Ma said, “I had the lamp burning in the window for you.”

パパは立ち止まり、ママは「あなたのために窓にランプをともしていたよ」と言った。

“I didn’t see it,” said Pa.	「見えなかった」とパパは言った。
“I kept straining my eyes to see something, but all I saw was the dark.	「何か見えるように目を凝らし続けたが、見えたのは暗闇だけだった。
Then of a sudden, everything gave way under me and I went straight down, must have been ten feet.	すると突然、私の下で全てが崩れ、私は真っ直ぐに落ちた、10フィートくらいだったに違いない。
It seemed farther.	もっと遠くに思えた。

“I had no idea what had happened or where I was.	「何が起こったのか、どこにいるのか全く分からなかった。
But I was out of the wind.	でも風は避けられた。
The blizzard was yelling and shrieking overhead, but the air was fairly still where I was.	ブリザードは頭上で叫び、金切り声を上げていたが、私のいる場所の空気はかなり静かだった。
I felt around me.	私は周囲を探った。
There was snow banked up as high as I could reach on three sides of me, and the other side was a kind of wall of bare ground, sloping back at the bottom.	私の三方を私の背丈ほどに雪が積み上がり、もう一方は地面がむき出しになった壁のようで、底の部分が後ろに傾斜していた。

“It didn’t take me long to figure that I’d walked off the bank of some gully, somewhere on the prairie.	「私が大草原のどこかで、ある峡谷の土手から歩き去ったことを理解するのに時間はかからなかった。
I crawled back under the bank, and there I was with solid ground at my back and overhead, snug as a bear in a den.	私は土手の下にもぐり、背中と頭上に固い地面があり、洞穴のクマのように心地よかった。
I didn’t believe I would freeze there, out of the wind and with the buffalo coat to keep warmth in my body.	風を避け、バッファローコートで体を温めれば、そこで凍え死ぬことはないと思った。
So I curled up in it and went to sleep, being pretty tired.	だから私はそこに丸まって、かなり疲れていたので眠りについた。

“My, I was glad I had that coat, and a good warm cap with earlaps, and that extra pair of thick socks, Caroline.

“When I woke up I could hear the blizzard, but faintly.	「目が覚めた時、吹雪の音が聞こえたが、かすかだった。
There was solid snow in front of me, coated over with ice, where my breath had melted it.	私の前には固い雪があり、私の息で溶けた氷で覆われていた。
The blizzard had filled up the hole I had made when I fell.	吹雪は私が落ちた時にできた穴を埋め尽くしていた。
There must have been six feet of snow over me, but the air was good.	私の上には6フィートの雪があったに違いないが、空気は良かった。
I moved my arms and legs and fingers and toes, and felt my nose and ears to make sure I was not freezing.	私は腕と脚と指と足の指を動かし、鼻と耳を触って凍っていないことを確認した。
I could still hear the storm, so I went to sleep again.	まだ嵐の音が聞こえたので、私はまた眠りについた。

“How long has it been, Caroline?”

Then Pa asked Mary and Laura, “Do you know what day this is?”

“Is it Sunday?” Mary guessed.

「日曜日?」メアリーは推測した。

“It’s the day before Christmas,” said Ma.

「クリスマスの前日よ」とママは言った。

Laura and Mary had forgotten all about Christmas.	ローラとメアリーはクリスマスのことをすっかり忘れていた。
Laura asked, “Did you sleep all that time, Pa?”	ローラは尋ねた。「パパ、ずっと寝てたの?」

“No,” said Pa.	「いいや」パパは言った。
“I kept on sleeping and waking up hungry, and sleeping some more, till I woke up just about starved.	「寝ては空腹で目を覚まし、また寝て、ついに飢え死にしそうになって目が覚めたんだ。
I was bringing home some oyster crackers for Christmas.	クリスマス用にオイスタークラッカーを家に持ち帰っていたんだ。
They were in a pocket of the buffalo coat.	バッファローコートのポケットに入っていたんだ。
I took a handful of those crackers out of the paper bag and ate them.	紙袋からクラッカーを一握り取り出して食べた。
I felt out in the snow and took a handful, and I ate that for a drink.	雪の中を手探りして一握り取り、それを飲み物代わりに食べた。
Then all I could do was lie there and wait for the storm to stop.	それから私ができることはそこに横たわって嵐が止むのを待つことだけだった。

“I tell you, Caroline, it was mighty hard to do that, thinking of you and the girls and knowing you would go out in the blizzard to do the chores.	「キャロライン、君と娘たちのことを考えて、君たちが吹雪の中、家事をしに外に出るだろうと知りながら、そうするのはとても難しかったよ。
But I knew I could not get home till the blizzard stopped.	でも吹雪が止むまでは家に帰れないことは分かっていた。

“So I waited a long time, till I was so hungry again that I ate all the rest of the oyster crackers.	「それで長い時間待って、またとてもお腹が空いてきたので、残りのオイスタークラッカーを全部食べた。
They were no bigger than the end of my thumb.	私の親指の先ほどの大きさしかなかった。
One of them wasn’t half a mouthful, and the whole half-pound of them wasn’t very filling.	1つは口に半分も入らないし、半ポンド全部食べてもあまりお腹がいっぱいにならなかった。

“Then I went on waiting, sleeping some.	「それから待ち続け、少し眠った。
I guessed it was night again.	再び夜になったと思った。
Whenever I woke I listened closely, and I could hear the dim sound of the blizzard.	目が覚めるたびに耳を澄ますと、吹雪の音がかすかに聞こえた。
I could tell by that sound that the snow was getting thicker over me, but the air was still good in my den.	その音で、私の上の雪が厚くなっていることがわかったけれど、私の巣穴の空気はまだ良かった。
The heat of my blood was keeping me from freezing.	私の血の熱が私を凍えさせないようにしていた。

“I tried to sleep all I could, but I was so hungry that I kept waking up.	「私はできるだけ眠ろうとしたけれど、とてもお腹が空いていて、起き続けた。
Finally I was too hungry to sleep at all.	ついに私はあまりにお腹が空いていて、全く眠れなかった。
Girls, I was bound and determined I would not do it, but after some time I did.	娘たちよ、私はそうしないと決意していたが、しばらくしてそうした。
I took the paper bag out of the inside pocket of my old overcoat, and I ate every bit of the Christmas candy.	私は古いオーバーコートの内ポケットから紙袋を取り出し、クリスマスキャンディーを全部食べた。
I’m sorry.”	ごめんなさい」

Laura hugged him from one side and Mary hugged him from the other.	ローラは片側から彼を抱きしめ、メアリーは反対側から彼を抱きしめた。
They hugged him hard and Laura said, “Oh Pa, I am so glad you did!”	彼女たちは彼を強く抱きしめ、ローラは「ああ、パパ、そうしてくれて本当によかった!」と言った。

“So am I, Pa! So am I!” said Mary.	「私もパパ! 私も!」とメアリーは言った。
They were truly glad.	彼女たちは本当に嬉しかった。

“Well,” Pa said, “we’ll have a big wheat crop next year, and you girls won’t have to wait till next Christmas for candy.”

「さて」とパパは言った、「来年は小麦が豊作になるだろうし、あなたたちもキャンディを来年のクリスマスまで待つ必要はないだろう。」

“Was it good, Pa?” Laura asked.	「おいしかった、パパ?」とローラは尋ねた。

“It was very good, and I felt much better,” said Pa.	「とてもおいしかったし、気分もずっと良くなったよ」とパパは言った。
“I went right to sleep and I must have slept most of yesterday and last night.	「すぐに眠りについて、昨日と昨夜のほとんどを眠っていたに違いない。
Suddenly I sat up wide awake.	突然、私は目を覚まして起き上がった。
I could not hear a sound.	音は聞こえなかった。

“Now, was I buried so deep in snow that I couldn’t hear the blizzard, or had it stopped? I listened hard.	「さて、私は雪に深く埋もれて吹雪が聞こえなかったのか、それとも吹雪が止んだのか? 私は一生懸命耳を傾けた。
It was so still that I could hear the silence.	とても静かで、私は沈黙を聞くことができた。

“Girls, I began digging on that snow like a badger.	「娘たちよ、私はアナグマのように雪を掘り始めた。
I wasn’t slow in digging up out of that den.	私はその巣穴から掘り出すのに時間がかからなかった。
I came scrabbling through the top of that snow bank, and where do you suppose I was?	私はその雪の土手の上をよじ登って来たが、どこにいたと思う?

“I was on the bank of Plum Creek, just above the place where we set the fish-trap, Laura.”

「私はプラム・クリークの土手で、ちょうど魚捕り器を仕掛けた場所の上にいたんだ、ローラ。」

“Why, I can see that place from the window,” said Laura.

「あら、その場所は窓から見えるよ」とローラは言った。

“Yes. And I could see this house,” said Pa.	「そうだ。そしてこの家が見えたんだ」とパパは言った。
All that long, terrible time he had been so near.	その長く恐ろしい時間の間ずっと、彼はとても近くにいた。
The lamp in the window had not been able to shine into the blizzard at all, or he would have seen its light.	窓のランプは吹雪の中を全く照らすことが出来なかった、さもなければ彼はその光を見ることが出来ただろう。

“My legs were so stiff and cramped that I could hardly stand on them,” said Pa.	「足がとても硬直してつりそうだったので、ほとんど立つことが出来なかった」とパパは言った。
“But I saw this house and I started for home just as fast as I could go.	「でもこの家が見えて、できるだけ早く家に向かって歩き始めたんだ。
And here I am!” he finished, hugging Laura and Mary.	そしてここにいるよ!」と彼は言い終えると、ローラとメアリーを抱きしめた。

Then he went to the big buffalo coat and he took out of one of its pockets a flat, square-edge can of bright tin.	それから彼は大きなバッファローコートのところへ行き、ポケットの1つから平らで四角い縁のついた明るいブリキの缶を取り出した。
He asked, “What do you think I have brought you for Christmas dinner?”	彼は「クリスマスの夕食に何を持って来たと思う?」と尋ねた。

They could not guess.

彼女たちは推測できなかった。

“Oysters!” said Pa.	「カキだ!」とパパは言った。
“Nice, fresh oysters!	「おいしい新鮮なカキだ!
They were frozen solid when I got them, and they are frozen solid yet.	私が手に入れた時はカチカチに凍っていたし、今もカチカチに凍っている。
Better put them in the lean-to, Caroline, so they will stay that way till tomorrow.”	キャロライン、明日までこのままの状態にしておけるように、それらを物置小屋に入れた方がいい。」

Laura touched the can.	ローラは缶に触れた。
It was cold as ice.	それは氷のように冷たかった。

“I ate up the oyster crackers, and I ate up the Christmas candy, but by jinks,” said Pa, “I brought the oysters home!”

「オイスタークラッカーもクリスマスキャンディも食べてしまったが、しかし、なんとかカキは家に持ち帰ったぞ!」とパパは言った。
