Chapter 39: The Third Day 第39章: 3日目

All night the house shook and jarred in the wind. 一晩中家は風に揺れ、ガタガタと音を立てた。

Next day the storm was worse than ever. 次の日、嵐はこれまで以上にひどくなった。

The noises of the wind were more terrible and snow struck the windows with an icy rattle. 風の音はより恐ろしく、雪は氷のような音を立てて窓を打った。

Ma made ready to go to the stable. ママは馬小屋に行く準備をした。

“Eat your breakfast, girls, and be careful with the fire,” she said. 「朝食を食べなさい、娘たち、そして火に気をつけて」と彼女は言った。

Then she was gone into the storm. それから彼女は嵐の中へ出て行った。

After a long time she came back and another day began. 長い時間の後、彼女は戻ってきて、別の日が始まった。

If Pa had been there he would have played the fiddle and they would all have been cosy and happy. もしパパがそこにいたら、バイオリンを弾いて、みんなが居心地よく幸せに過ごせただろう。

“We mustn’t sit like this. 「こんな風に座っていてはいけないよ。

Would you like to play cat’s cradle?” 綾取りをしたい?」

Jack had left his supper untouched. ジャックは夕食に手をつけずにいた。
