第38章: 運動会の日

It was late next morning when Ma called Laura to breakfast.	ママがローラを朝食に呼んだのは翌朝遅くだった。
The storm was fiercer and wilder.	嵐はますます激しくなった。
Furry-white frost covered the windows, and inside that good tight house the sugary snow was over the floor and the bedcovers.	窓は毛皮のような白い霜で覆われ、その頑丈な家の中は、床やベッドカバーに砂糖のような雪が積もっていた。
Upstairs was so cold that Laura snatched up her clothes and hurried down to dress by the stove.	二階はとても寒かったので、ローラは服をひっつかんで、急いで降りてストーブのそばで着替えた。

Mary was already dressed and buttoning Carrie up.	メアリーはすでに着替えを済ませ、キャリーのボタンを留めていた。
Hot cornmeal mush, and milk, with the new white bread and butter, were on the table.	熱いコーンミール粥と牛乳、新しい白パンとバターがテーブルに並んでいた。
The daylight was dim white.	日光は薄暗い白だった。
Frost was thick on every window pane.	どの窓ガラスにも霜が厚くついていた。

Ma shivered over the stove.	ママはストーブの上で震えていた。
“Well,” she said, “the stock must be fed.”	「まあ」と彼女は言った、「家畜に餌をやらなくちゃ」

She put on Pa’s boots and jumper, and wrapped herself in the big shawl.	彼女はパパのブーツとジャンパーを着て、大きなショールを身にまとった。
She told Mary and Laura that she would be gone longer this time, because she must water the horses and the cattle.	彼女はメアリーとローラに、馬と牛に水をやらなければならないので、今回はもっと長く留守にするだろうと言った。

When she was gone, Mary was scared and still.	彼女がいなくなると、メアリーは怖くてじっとしていた。
But Laura could not bear to be still.	しかし、ローラはじっとしていることに耐えられなかった。
“Come on,” she told Mary.	「おいで」と彼女はメアリーに言った。
“We’ve got the work to do.”	「やるべきことがあるよ」

They washed and wiped the dishes.	彼女たちは皿を洗って拭いた。
They shook the snow off their bedcovers and made their bed.	彼女たちはベッドカバーから雪を払い、ベッドを整えた。
They warmed again by the stove, then they polished it, and Mary cleaned the woodbox while Laura swept the floors.	彼女たちはストーブのそばで再び暖まり、それからそれを磨き、メアリーは薪入れを掃除し、ローラは床を掃いた。

Ma had not come back.	ママは帰って来なかった。
So Laura took the dust-cloth and wiped the window sills and the benches and every curve of Ma’s willow rocking-chair.	それでローラは雑巾を取り、窓枠とベンチとママの柳のロッキングチェアの曲線をすべて拭いた。
She climbed on a bench and very carefully wiped the clock-shelf and the clock, and the little brown-spotted dog and her own jewel-box with the gold teapot and cup-and-saucer on top.	彼女はベンチに登り、時計の棚と時計、小さな茶色の斑点のある犬、そして金のティーポットとカップとソーサーを乗せた自分の宝石箱をとても注意深く拭いた。
But she did not touch the pretty china shepherdess standing on the bracket that Pa had carved for Ma.	しかし、彼女はパパがママのために彫ったブラケットの上に立っているきれいな陶器の羊飼いの少女には触れなかった。
Ma allowed no one else to touch the shepherdess.	ママは誰も羊飼いの少女に触れさせなかった。

While Laura was dusting, Mary combed Carrie’s hair and put the red-checked cloth on the table, and got out the school-books and the slate.

ローラがほこりを払っている間に、メアリーはキャリーの髪をとかし、赤いチェックの布をテーブルにかけ、教科書と石板を取り出した。

At last the wind howled into the lean-to with a cloud of snow and Ma.

ついに風が雪雲とママと一緒に吹き込んできた。

Her skirt and her shawl were frozen stiff with ice.	彼女のスカートとショールは氷で凍りついていた。
She had had to draw water from the well for the horses and Spot and the calf.	彼女は馬とスポットと子牛のために井戸から水を汲まなければならなかった。
The wind had flung the water on her and the cold had frozen her soaked clothes.	風が彼女に水を吹き付け、寒さで彼女の濡れた服は凍りついていた。
She had not been able to get to the barn with enough water.	彼女は十分な水を持って納屋まで行くことができなかった。
But under the icy shawl she had saved almost all the milk.	しかし、凍ったショールの下で彼女はほとんどすべての牛乳を守っていた。

She rested a little, and said she must bring in wood.	彼女は少し休んで、薪を運び込まなければならないと言った。
Mary and Laura begged her to let them bring it, but Ma said:	メアリーとローラは薪を運び込ませてほしいと頼んだが、ママは言った。

She piled wood high on the woodbox and around it, while they opened and shut the door for her.	ママが薪箱とその周りに薪を高く積み上げている間、二人はママのためにドアを開けたり閉めたりした。
Then she rested, and they mopped up the puddles of snow melting from the wood.	それからママは休み、二人は薪から溶けた雪の水たまりを拭き取った。

“You are good girls,” Ma said.	「あなたたちはいい子ね」とママは言った。
She looked around at the house, and praised them for doing the work so nicely while she was gone.	ママは家の中を見回し、自分がいない間にとてもきれいに仕事をしたことを二人をほめた。
“Now,” she said, “you may study your lessons.”	「さあ」とママは言った。「勉強してもいいよ」

Laura and Mary sat down to their books.	ローラとメアリーは教科書に向かって座った。
Laura looked steadily at the page, but she could not study.	ローラはページをじっと見つめたが、勉強することはできなかった。
She heard the storm howling and she heard things in the air moaning and shrieking.	ローラには嵐の咆哮が聞こえ、空中で何かがうめき、金切り声を上げているのが聞こえた。
Snow swish-swished against the windows.	雪が窓にシュッシュッと当たった。
She tried not to think of Pa.	ローラはパパのことを考えないようにした。
Suddenly the words on the page smeared together and a drop of water splashed on them.	突然、ページ上の文字がにじみ、水滴が飛び散った。

She was ashamed.	ローラは恥ずかしかった。
It would be shameful even for Carrie to cry, and Laura was eight years old.	キャリーが泣いても恥ずかしいのに、ローラは8歳だった。
She looked sidewise to make sure that Mary had not seen that tear fall.	ローラはメアリーが涙が落ちるのを見ていないか横目で見た。
Mary’s eyes were shut so tight that her whole face was crinkled, and Mary’s mouth was wabbling.	メアリーの目はぎゅっと閉じられ、顔全体にしわが寄り、口が震えていた。

“I don’t believe we want lessons, girls!” Ma said.	「私たちはレッスンなんていらないよ」とママは言った。
“Suppose we don’t do anything today but play.	「今日は何もせずに遊んでみようか。
Think what we’ll play first.	最初に何をして遊ぼうか。
Pussy-in-the-corner!	かくれんぼ!
Would you like that?”	いいかな?」

“Oh yes!” they said.

「ああ、いいよ!」と子供たちは言った。

Laura stood in one corner, Mary in another, and Carrie in the third.	ローラは1つの角に立ち、メアリーは別の角に、キャリーは3つ目の角に立った。
There were only three corners, because the stove was in one.	角は3つしかなかった。1つにはストーブがあったからだ。
Ma stood in the middle of the floor and cried, “Poor pussy wants a corner!”	ママは床の真ん中に立ち、「かわいそうな猫ちゃんは角が欲しいのね!」と叫んだ。

Then all at once they ran out of their corners and each tried to get into another corner.	それから、みんな一斉に角から走り出し、それぞれが別の角に入ろうとした。
Jack was excited.	ジャックは興奮していた。
Ma dodged into Mary’s corner, and that left Mary out to be poor pussy.	ママはメアリーの角に逃げ込み、メアリーはかわいそうな猫ちゃんになった。
Then Laura fell over Jack, and that left Laura out.	するとローラはジャックに倒れ、ローラは外された。
Carrie ran laughing into the wrong corners at first, but she soon learned.	キャリーは最初は間違った角に笑いながら走っていったのだが、すぐに覚えた。

They all ran till they were gasping from running and shouting and laughing.	みんな走り回り、叫び、笑い、息が切れるまで走り回った。
They had to rest, and Ma said, “Bring me the slate and I’ll tell you a story.”	みんな休憩しなければならなくなり、ママは「石板を持ってきなさい、お話をしてあげる」と言った。

“Why do you need a slate to tell a story?” Laura asked as she laid the slate in Ma’s lap.

「お話するのに石板がどうして必要なの?」ローラは石板をママの膝に置きながら尋ねた。

“You’ll see,” said Ma, and she told this story:

「今にわかるよ」とママは言って、こんな話をした。

And he said: “Pshaw! It’s nothing but tadpoles!”

そして彼は言った。「ちぇっ! オタマジャクシにすぎない!」

“It’s a bird!” Carrie yelled, and she clapped her hands and laughed till she rolled off the footstool.	「鳥だ!」キャリーは叫び、手を叩いて笑い、足台から転げ落ちた。
Laura and Mary laughed too and coaxed, “Tell us another, Ma! Please!”	ローラとメアリーも笑い、「ママ、もうひとつお話を聞かせて! お願い!」とせがんだ。

“Well, if I must,” said Ma, and she began, “This is the house that Jack built for two pieces of money.”

「そうね、そうせねばならないのなら」とママは言い、「これはジャックが2枚のお金で建てた家」と始めた。

She covered both sides of the slate with the pictures of that story.	彼女は石板の両面をその物語の絵で埋め尽くした。
Ma let Mary and Laura read it and look at the pictures as long as they liked.	ママはメアリーとローラにそれを読ませ、好きなだけ絵を見させた。
Then she asked, “Mary, can you tell that story?”	それから彼女は「メアリー、そのお話ができる?」と尋ねた。

“Yes!” Mary answered.

「できる!」とメアリーは答えた。

Ma wiped the slate clean and gave it to Mary.	ママは石板をきれいに拭いてメアリーに渡した。
“Write it on the slate, then,” she said.	「それなら石板に書いて」と彼女は言った。
“And Laura and Carrie, I have new playthings for you.”	「そしてローラとキャリー、君たちに新しいおもちゃがあるよ」

She gave her thimble to Laura, and Mary’s thimble to Carrie, and she showed them that pressing the thimbles into the frost on the windows made perfect circles.	彼女は自分の指ぬきをローラに、メアリーの指ぬきをキャリーに渡し、指ぬきを窓の霜に押し付けると完全な円ができることを彼女たちに示した。
They could make pictures on the windows.	彼女たちは窓に絵を描くことができた。

With thimble-circles Laura made a Christmas tree.	ローラは指ぬきの円でクリスマスツリーを作った。
She made birds flying.	彼女は鳥が飛んでいる絵を作った。
She made a log house with smoke coming out of the chimney.	彼女は煙突から煙が出ている丸太小屋を作った。
She even made a roly-poly man and a roly-poly woman.	彼女は丸々と太った男と丸々と太った女さえ作った。
Carrie made just circles.	キャリーはただ円を作った。

When Laura finished her window and Mary looked up from the slate, the room was dusky.	ローラが窓を終えて、メアリーが石板から顔を上げた時、部屋は薄暗かった。
Ma smiled at them.	ママは彼女たちに微笑んだ。

“We have been so busy we forgot all about dinner,” she said.	「私たちは忙しすぎて夕食のことをすっかり忘れていたよ」と彼女は言った。
“Come eat your suppers now.”	「さあ、夕食を食べにおいで」

“Don’t you have to do the chores first?” Laura asked.

「まず雑用をやらなくていいの?」とローラは尋ねた。

“Not tonight,” said Ma.	「今夜はやらなくていいよ」とママは言った。
“It was so late when I fed the stock this morning that I gave them enough to last till tomorrow.	「今朝家畜に餌をやったときはとても遅かったから、明日まで十分な量を与えたのよ。
Maybe the storm will not be so bad then.”	もしかしたら、嵐はそれほどひどくはないかもしれないよ」

All at once Laura felt miserable.	ローラは急に惨めな気分になった。
So did Mary.	メアリーもそうだった。
And Carrie whimpered, “I want Pa!”	そしてキャリーは「パパに会いたい!」と泣き言を言った。

“Hush, Carrie!” Ma said, and Carrie hushed.

「静かに、キャリー!」とママが言うと、キャリーは静かになった。

“We must not worry about Pa,” Ma said, firmly.	「パパのことを心配してはいけない」とママはきっぱりと言った。
She lighted the lamp, but she did not set it in the window.	彼女はランプに火をつけたけれど、それを窓際には置かなかった。
“Come eat your suppers now,” she said again, “and then we’ll all go to bed.”	「さあ、夕食を食べましょう」と彼女は再び言った。「そして、みんなで寝ましょう」
