第35章: 家事

Now in the daytimes Pa was driving the wagon up and down Plum Creek, and bringing load after load of logs to the pile by the door.	日中、パパはプラム・クリークを馬車で行き来し、何度も何度も丸太を運んでドアのそばに積み上げていた。
He cut down old plum trees and old willows and cottonwoods, leaving the little ones to grow.	パパは古いプラムの木や柳やポプラを切り倒し、小さな木は残して成長させた。
He hauled them and stacked them, and chopped and split them into stove wood, till he had a big woodpile.	パパは木を運んで積み上げ、薪にするために切り刻んで割り、大きな薪の山を作った。

With his short-handled ax in his belt, his traps on his arm, and his gun against his shoulder, he walked far up Plum Creek, setting traps for muskrat and mink and otter and fox.

パパは短い柄の斧をベルトに差し、罠を腕にかけ、銃を肩にかけ、プラム・クリークをずっと上流まで歩き、マスクラットやミンク、カワウソやキツネの罠を仕掛けた。

One evening at supper Pa said he had found a beaver meadow.	ある晩の夕食時、パパはビーバーの牧草地を見つけたと言った。
But he did not set traps there because so few beavers were left.	しかし、ビーバーがほとんど残っていないので、パパはそこに罠を仕掛けなかった。
He had seen a fox and shot at it, but missed.	パパはキツネを見つけて撃ったが、外した。

“I am all out of practice hunting,” he said.	「狩りの練習が全然足りない」とパパは言った。
“It’s a fine place we have here, but there isn’t much game.	「ここは素晴らしい場所だが、獲物があまりいない。

“Where there are no schools for the children, Charles,” said Ma.

「子供達のための学校がない場所ね、チャールズ」とママは言った。

“You’re right, Caroline. You usually are,” Pa said.	「君は正しい、キャロライン。いつもそうだ」とパパは言った。
“Listen to that wind.	「あの風の音を聞け。
We’ll have a storm tomorrow.”	明日は嵐になるぞ」

But the next day was mild as spring.	しかし、次の日は春のように穏やかだった。
The air was soft and warm and the sun shone brightly.	空気は柔らかく暖かく、太陽は明るく輝いていた。
In the middle of the morning Pa came to the house.	午前中、パパが家に戻ってきた。

“Let’s have an early dinner and take a walk to town this afternoon,” he said to Ma.	「早めの夕食を食べて、午後町まで歩いて行こう」とパパはママに言った。
“This is too nice a day for you to stay indoors.	「こんないい日に家の中にいるのはもったいない。
Time enough for that when winter really comes.”	冬が本当に来たら、家にいる時間は十分にある。」

“But the children,” said Ma.	「でも子供たちが」とママは言った。
“We can’t take Carrie and walk so far.”	「キャリーを連れてそんなに遠くまで歩けないよ。」

“Shucks!” Pa laughed at her.	「なあに」パパは彼女を笑った。
“Mary and Laura are great girls now.	「メアリーとローラはもう立派な女の子だ。
They can take care of Carrie for one afternoon.”	午後の間キャリーの面倒を見れるよ。」

“Of course we can, Ma,” said Mary;	「もちろんできるよ、ママ」メアリーは言った。
and Laura said, “Of course we can!”	そしてローラは「もちろんできるよ」と言った。

They watched Pa and Ma starting gaily away.	彼女たちはパパとママが陽気に出発するのを見送った。
Ma was so pretty, in her brown-and-red Christmas shawl, with her brown knit hood tied under her chin, and she stepped so quickly and looked up at Pa so merrily that Laura thought she was like a bird.	ママは茶色と赤のクリスマスのショールを着て、茶色のニットのフードをあごの下で結んでいてとてもきれいで、とても素早く歩き、とても陽気にパパを見上げたので、ローラはママが鳥のようだと思った。

Then Laura swept the floor while Mary cleared the table.	それからローラが床を掃き、メアリーはテーブルを片付けた。
Mary washed the dishes and Laura wiped them and put them in the cupboard.	メアリーは食器を洗い、ローラはそれを拭いて食器棚に入れた。
They put the red-checked cloth on the table.	彼女たちは赤いチェックの布をテーブルに掛けた。
Now the whole long afternoon was before them and they could do as they pleased.	長い午後が彼女たちの前に広がり、彼女たちは好きなように過ごすことができた。

They sat Carrie on a bench and held the book before her, and both did their best.	二人はキャリーをベンチに座らせ、本を彼女の前に持ち、二人とも最善を尽くした。
But Carrie did not like it.	しかし、キャリーはそれを好まなかった。

“Well,” said Laura, “Let’s play keeping house.”

The house was empty and still, with Ma gone.	ママがいなくて、家は空っぽで静かだった。
Ma was so quiet and gentle that she never made any noise, but now the whole house was listening for her.	ママはとても静かで優しいので、決して音を立てなかったが、今や家全体が彼女の音を聞いていた。

Laura went outdoors for a while by herself, but she came back.	ローラはしばらく一人で外に出たが、戻ってきた。
The afternoon grew longer and longer.	午後が長く長くなっていった。
There was nothing at all to do.	何もすることがなかった。
Even Jack walked up and down restlessly.	ジャックさえも落ち着きなく歩き回った。

He asked to go out, but when Laura opened the door he would not go.	彼は外に出たがったが、ローラがドアを開けると彼は行かなかった。
He lay down and got up, and walked around and around the room.	彼は横になったり起きたり、部屋の中をぐるぐる歩き回ったりした。
He came to Laura and looked at her earnestly.	彼はローラのところに来て、真剣に彼女を見た。

“What is it, Jack?” Laura asked him.	「どうしたの、ジャック?」とローラは彼に尋ねた。

Outdoors was bitter cold.	屋外はひどく寒かった。
Laura shut the door.	ローラはドアを閉めた。

“Look,” she said.	「見て」と彼女は言った。
“The sunshine’s dark.	「日差しが暗い。
Are the grasshoppers coming back?”	バッタが戻ってくるの?」

“Not in the winter-time, goosie,” said Mary.	「冬には来ないよ、おばかさん」とメアリーは言った。
“Maybe it’s rain.”	「たぶん雨よ」

“Goosie yourself!” Laura said back.	「あなたこそおばかさんよ!」とローラは言い返した。
“It doesn’t rain in the winter-time.”	「冬には雨は降らないよ」

“Well, snow, then!	「じゃあ、雪よ!
What’s the difference?”	違いは何?」
Mary was angry and so was Laura.	メアリーは怒り、ローラも怒った。
They would have gone on quarreling, but suddenly there was no sunshine.	彼女たちは喧嘩を続けただろうが、突然日差しがなくなった。
They ran to look through the bedroom window.	彼女たちは走って寝室の窓から外を見た。

A dark cloud with a fleecy white underside was rolling fast from the north-west.

下側がふわふわした白い暗い雲が北西から速く転がっていた。

Mary and Laura looked out the front window.	メアリーとローラは正面の窓から外を見た。
Surely it was time for Pa and Ma to come, but they were nowhere in sight.	確かにパパとママが来る時間だったが、彼らはどこにも見えなかった。

“Maybe it’s a blizzard,” said Mary.

「ブリザードかもしれない」とメアリーは言った。

“Like Pa told us about,” said Laura.

「パパが話してくれたみたいに」とローラは言った。

They looked at each other through the grey air.	彼らは灰色の空気を通して互いに見つめ合った。
They were thinking of those children who froze stark stiff.	彼らは凍えて硬直した子供たちのことを考えていた。

“The woodbox is empty,” said Laura.

「薪箱が空っぽだ」とローラは言った。

Mary grabbed her.	メアリーは彼女をつかんだ。
“You can’t!” said Mary.	「できないよ!」とメアリーは言った。
“Ma told us to stay in the house if it stormed.”	「ママは嵐が来たら家にいるように言ったよ」
Laura jerked away and Mary said, “Besides, Jack won’t let you.”	ローラはぐいと離れ、メアリーは「それに、ジャックが許さない」と言った。

“We’ve got to bring in wood before the storm gets here,” Laura told her.	「嵐が来る前に薪を運び込まなきゃ」とローラは彼女に言った。
“Hurry!”	「急いで!」

They could hear a strange sound in the wind, like a far-away screaming.	彼女たちは風の中に、遠くで叫んでいるような奇妙な音を聞くことができた。
They put on their shawls and pinned them under their chins with their large shawl-pins.	彼女たちはショールを着て、大きなショールピンで顎の下に留めた。
They put on their mittens.	彼女たちはミトンをはめた。

Laura was ready first.	ローラが最初に準備ができた。
She told Jack, “We’ve got to bring in wood, Jack.”	彼女はジャックに「ジャック、薪を運び込まなくちゃ」と言った。
He seemed to understand.	彼は理解したようだった。
He went out with her and stayed close at her heels.	彼は彼女と一緒に外に出て、彼女のすぐ後ろにいた。

Laura ran to the woodpile, piled up a big armful of wood, and ran back, with Jack behind her.	ローラは薪の山に走り、両腕いっぱいの薪を抱えて、ジャックを後ろに連れて走って戻った。
She could not open the door while she held the wood.	彼女は薪を抱えている間はドアを開けることができなかった。

“I tan open the door,” said Carrie.

Carrie was big enough to open the door.	キャリーはドアを開けるのに十分な大きさだった。

Laura and Mary hurried fast, bringing in wood.	ローラとメアリーは急いで薪を運び込んだ。

Laura and Mary forgot that Ma had told them to stay in the house when it stormed.	ローラとメアリーは、ママが嵐の時は家の中にいるように言ったことを忘れていた。
They forgot everything but bringing in wood.	二人は薪を運び込むこと以外は全て忘れていた。
They ran frantically back and forth, bringing each time all the wood they could stagger under.	二人は必死に往復し、毎回よろめきながら運べるだけの薪を運び込んだ。

They piled wood around the woodbox and around the stove.	二人は薪箱の周りとストーブの周りに薪を積み上げた。
They piled it against the wall.	二人は壁に薪を積み上げた。
They made the piles higher, and bigger.	二人は薪の山をより高く、より大きくした。

Bang! they banged the door.	バン! 二人はドアを叩いた。
They ran to the woodpile.	二人は薪の山に走った。
Clop-clop-clop they stacked the wood on their arms.	二人は薪を腕に積み重ねた。

Bump! it went open, and bang! they back-bumped it shut, and thumpity-thud-thump! they flung down the wood	バン! ドアが開き、バン! 二人はドアを閉め、ドスン! 薪を投げ捨てた。
and ran back, outdoors, to the woodpile, and panting back again.	そして、屋外の薪の山まで走り、また息を切らして戻ってきた。

They could hardly see the woodpile in the swirling whiteness.	二人は渦巻く白さの中で薪の山をほとんど見ることができなかった。
Snow was driven all in among the wood.	雪は薪の間に吹き込まれていた。
They could hardly see the house, and Jack was a dark blob hurrying beside them.	二人は家をほとんど見ることができず、ジャックは二人の横を急ぐ黒い塊だった。
The hard snow scoured their faces.	硬い雪が二人の顔を洗った。
Laura’s arms ached and her chest panted and all the time she thought, “Oh, where is Pa? Where is Ma?”	ローラの腕は痛み、胸は喘ぎ、彼女はずっと「ああ、パパはどこ? ママはどこ?」と考えていた。
and she felt “Hurry! Hurry!”	そして彼女は「急いで! 急いで!」と感じた。

The woodpile was gone.	薪の山はなくなっていた。
Mary took a few sticks and Laura took a few sticks and there were no more.	メアリーは数本の棒を取り、ローラも数本の棒を取ると、もう残っていなかった。
They ran to the door together, and Laura opened it and Jack bounded in.	二人は一緒にドアまで走り、ローラがドアを開けるとジャックが飛び込んできた。
Carrie was at the front window, clapping her hands and squealing.	キャリーは正面の窓にいて、手を叩いて金切り声を上げていた。
Laura dropped her sticks of wood and turned just in time to see Pa and Ma burst, running, out of the whirling whiteness of snow.	ローラは薪を落として振り返ると、ちょうどパパとママが渦巻く白い雪の中から飛び出してきて走ってくるのが見えた。

Pa was holding Ma’s hand and pulling to help her run.	パパはママの手を握り、走るのを手伝うために引っ張っていた。
They burst into the house and slammed the door and stood panting, covered with snow.	二人は家の中に飛び込んでドアを閉め、雪まみれになって息を切らして立っていた。
No one said anything while Pa and Ma looked at Laura and Mary, who stood all snowy in shawls and mittens.	パパとママがショールとミトンを着て雪まみれになって立っているローラとメアリーを見ている間、誰も何も言わなかった。

At last Mary said in a small voice, “We did go out in the storm, Ma. We forgot.”

やっとメアリーは小さな声で言った、「私たちは嵐の中へ出かけたの、ママ。忘れちゃった。」

Laura’s head bowed down and she said, “We didn’t want to burn up the furniture, Pa, and freeze stark stiff.”

ローラは頭を垂れて言った、「家具を燃やして、凍え死にたくなかったんです、パパ。」

“Well, I’ll be darned!” said Pa.	「まあ、驚いた!」とパパは言った。
“If they didn’t move the whole woodpile in.	「薪の山を全部運び込んだとは。
All the wood I cut to last a couple of weeks.”	数週間分切った薪を全部。」

There, piled up in the house, was the whole woodpile.	そこには、薪の山が全部家の中に積み上げられていた。
Melted snow was leaking out of it and spreading in puddles.	溶けた雪がそこから漏れ出て水たまりになっていた。
A wet path went to the door, where snow lay unmelted.	濡れた小道がドアまで続いていて、そこには雪が溶けずに残っていた。

Then Pa’s great laugh rang out, and Ma’s gentle smile shone warm on Mary and Laura.	するとパパの大きな笑い声が響き、ママの優しい笑顔がメアリーとローラを暖かく照らした。
They knew they were forgiven for disobeying, because they had been wise to bring in wood, though perhaps not quite so much wood.	二人は、言うことを聞かなかったことを許されたことを知っていた。なぜなら、二人は、それほど多くの薪ではなかったかもしれないが、薪を運び込む賢明な判断をしたからだ。

Sometime soon they would be old enough not to make any mistakes, and then they could always decide what to do.	いつか近いうちに、二人は間違いを犯さない年齢になり、そうしたらいつでも何をすべきか決められるようになるだろう。
They would not have to obey Pa and Ma any more.	二人は、もうパパとママに従う必要がなくなるだろう。

They bustled to take off Ma’s shawl and hood and brush the snow from them and hang them up to dry.	二人はママのショールと頭巾を脱がせ、雪を払い、乾かすために吊るした。
Pa hurried to the stable to do the chores before the storm grew worse.	パパは嵐がひどくなる前に、急いで馬小屋に行き、雑用をした。
Then while Ma rested, they stacked the wood neatly as she told them, and they swept and mopped the floor.	それから、ママが休んでいる間に、二人はママに言われた通りに薪をきちんと積み、床を掃いて拭いた。

The house was neat and cosy again.	家は再びきれいで居心地の良い場所になった。
The tea-kettle hummed, the fire shone brightly from the draughts above the stove hearth.	やかんがシューシューと音を立て、ストーブの炉床の上のドラフトから火が明るく輝いていた。
Snow swished against the windows.	雪が窓に当たって音を立てた。

Pa came in.	パパが入ってきた。
“Here is the little milk I could get here with.	「これが私がここまで運んで来れたわずかな牛乳です。
The wind blew it up out of the pail.	風がそれをバケツから吹き飛ばした。
Caroline, this is a terrible storm.	キャロライン、これはひどい嵐だ。
I couldn’t see an inch, and the wind comes from all directions at once.	一寸先も見えなかったし、風は四方八方から同時に吹いてくる。
I thought I was on the path, but I couldn’t see the house, and—well, I just barely bumped against the corner.	道を歩いているつもりだったけど、家が見えなくて、角にぶつかりそうになった。
Another foot to the left and I never would have got in.”	もう一歩左だったら、絶対に家に入れなかったよ。」

“Charles!” Ma said.

「チャールズ!」ママは言った。

“Nothing to be scared about now,” said Pa.	「もう怖がることはない」パパは言った。
“But if we hadn’t run all the way from town and beat this storm here—”	「でも、町からずっと走ってきて、この嵐に勝たなければならなかったら」
Then his eyes twinkled, he rumpled Mary’s hair and pulled Laura’s ear.	それから彼の目はきらめき、メアリーの髪をくしゃくしゃにして、ローラの耳を引っ張った。
“I’m glad all this wood is in the house, too,” he said.	「この木材がすべて家の中にあってよかった」と彼は言った。
