Chapter 29: The Darkest Hour Is just before Dawn

第29章: 夜明け前が一番暗い

Now the winds blew cooler and the sun was not so hot at noon.	風は涼しく吹き、太陽は正午でもそれほど熱くなかった。
Mornings were chilly, and the grasshoppers hopped feebly until the sunshine warmed them.	朝は肌寒く、バッタは日光で暖まるまで弱々しく跳ねていた。

One morning a thick frost covered the ground.	ある朝、地面は厚い霜で覆われていた。
It coated every twig and chip with a white fuzz and it burned Laura’s bare feet.	霜はすべての小枝や木片を白い綿毛で覆い、ローラの素足を焼いた。
She saw millions of grasshoppers sitting perfectly stiff.	彼女は何百万匹ものバッタが完全に硬直して座っているのを見た。

In a few days there was not one grasshopper left anywhere.

Winter was near, and Pa had not come.	冬が近づいていたが、パパは帰って来なかった。

All the wood that Pa had chopped was gone, and Mary and Laura picked up the scattered chips.	パパが割った薪はすべてなくなり、メアリーとローラは散らばった木片を拾った。
The cold bit their noses and their fingers while they pried the last chips from the frozen ground.	凍った地面から最後の木片をこじ開ける間、寒さは彼女たちの鼻と指を刺した。

She talked Norwegian.	彼女はノルウェー語を話した。
It was no fun to play with her, and in the summertime Mary and Laura ran down to the creek when Mrs. Nelson and Anna came.	彼女と遊ぶのは楽しくなく、夏になるとメアリーとローラはネルソン夫人とアンナが来ると小川に駆け下りた。
But now it was cold.	しかし、今は寒かった。

“Now girls,” Ma said, “go get your dolls and play nicely with Anna.”

Laura brought the box of paper dolls that Ma had cut out of wrapping-paper, and they sat down to play on the floor by the open oven door.	ローラはママが包装紙から切り取った紙人形の箱を持ってきて、彼女たちは開いたオーブンのドアのそばの床に座って遊んだ。
Anna laughed when she saw the paper dolls.	アンナは紙人形を見て笑った。

Laura and Mary were horrified.	ローラとメアリーはぞっとした。

Ma and Mrs. Nelson went on talking and did not see Anna waving the halves of the paper lady and laughing.	ママとネルソン夫人は話し続け、アンナが紙の女性の半分を振り回して笑っているのを見なかった。
Laura put the cover on the paper-doll box, but in a little while Anna was tired of the torn paper lady and wanted another.	ローラは紙人形の箱に蓋をしたが、しばらくするとアンナは破れた紙人形に飽きて、別のものが欲しくなった。
Laura did not know what to do, and neither did Mary.	ローラはどうしたらいいかわからず、メアリーもそうだった。

If Anna did not get what she wanted she bawled.	アンナは欲しいものが手に入らないと泣きわめいた。
She was little and she was company and they must not make her cry.	彼女は小さくて、客で、泣かせてはいけない。
But if she got the paper dolls she would tear them all up.	しかし、紙人形を渡せば、彼女は全部破いてしまうだろう。
Then Mary whispered, “Get Charlotte. She can’t hurt Charlotte.”	するとメアリーは「シャーロッテを連れてきなさい」とささやいた。彼女はシャーロッテを傷つけることはできない。」

Laura scurried up the ladder while Mary kept Anna quiet.	メアリーがアンナを静かにさせている間に、ローラは梯子を急いで上った。

But Laura loved her dearly.	しかしローラは彼女をとても愛していた。

Charlotte had been Laura’s very own since Christmas morning long ago in the Big Woods of Wisconsin.

Laura carried her down the ladder, and Anna shouted for her.	ローラは彼女を抱えてはしごを降り、アンナが彼女を呼んだ。
Laura put Charlotte carefully in Anna’s arms.	ローラはシャーロッテを慎重にアンナの腕に抱かせた。
Anna hugged her tight.	アンナは彼女をぎゅっと抱きしめた。
But hugging could not hurt Charlotte.	しかし、抱きしめてもシャーロッテを傷つけることはできなかった。
Laura watched anxiously while Anna tugged at Charlotte’s shoe-button eyes and pulled her wavy yarn hair, and even banged her against the floor.	ローラは心配そうに見守る中、アンナはシャーロッテの靴のボタンの目をひっぱったり、波打つ毛糸の髪を引っ張ったり、さらには床に叩きつけたりした。
But Anna could not really hurt Charlotte, and Laura meant to straighten her skirts and her hair when Anna went away.	しかし、アンナはシャーロッテを本当に傷つけることはできなかったし、ローラはアンナが去ったらスカートと髪を整えるつもりだった。

At last that long visit was ended.	ついに長い訪問が終わった。
Mrs. Nelson was going home and taking Anna.	ネルソン夫人は家に帰り、アンナを連れて帰った。
Then a terrible thing happened.	すると恐ろしいことが起こった。
Anna would not give up Charlotte.	アンナはシャーロッテを諦めようとしなかった。

Perhaps she thought Charlotte was hers.	おそらく彼女はシャーロッテが自分のものだと思ったのだろう。
Maybe she told her mother that Laura had given her Charlotte.	もしかしたら彼女は母親にローラがシャーロッテをくれたと言ったのかもしれない。
Mrs. Nelson smiled.	ネルソン夫人は微笑んだ。
Laura tried to take Charlotte, and Anna howled.	ローラはシャーロッテを取り返そうとしたが、アンナはわめいた。

“I want my doll!” Laura said.	「私の人形が欲しい!」とローラは言った。
But Anna hung onto Charlotte and kicked and bawled.	しかし、アンナはシャーロッテにしがみついて、蹴り、わめいた。

“For shame, Laura,” Ma said.	「恥ずかしいよ、ローラ」とママは言った。
“Anna’s little and she’s company.	「アンナは小さいし、客人なのよ。
You are too big to play with dolls, anyway.	あなたはとにかく人形で遊ぶには大きすぎるよ。
Let Anna have her.”	アンナにあげなさい。」

Laura had to mind Ma.	ローラはママの言うことをきかなければならなかった。
She stood at the window and saw Anna skipping down the knoll, swinging Charlotte by one arm.	彼女は窓のところに立って、アンナがシャーロットを片腕で振り回しながら丘をスキップして降りていくのを見ました。

“For shame, Laura,” Ma said again.	「恥ずかしいよ、ローラ」とママは再び言った。
“A great girl like you, sulking about a rag doll.	「あなたのような立派な女の子が、ぼろ人形のことでふてくされるなんて。
Stop it, this minute.	今すぐやめなさい。
You don’t want that doll, you hardly ever played with it.	あなたはその人形が欲しくないのよ、ほとんど遊んだことがないじゃない。
You must not be so selfish.”	そんなに自分勝手になってはいけないよ。」

Laura quietly climbed the ladder and sat down on her box by the window.	ローラは静かにはしごを登り、窓際の箱に腰を下ろした。
She did not cry, but she felt crying inside her because Charlotte was gone.	彼女は泣かなかったが、シャーロッテがいなくなったので、心の中で泣いているように感じた。
Pa was not there, and Charlotte’s box was empty.	パパはそこにおらず、シャーロッテの箱は空だった。
The wind went howling by the eaves.	風が軒先で唸った。
Everything was empty and cold.	全てが空っぽで寒かった。

“I’m sorry, Laura,” Ma said that night.	「ごめんね、ローラ」とママはその夜言った。
“I wouldn’t have given your doll away if I’d known you care so much.	「そんなに大事に思っていると知っていたら、あなたの人形をあげなかったよ。
But we must not think only of ourselves.	でも、自分たちのことだけ考えてはいけないよ。
Think how happy you’ve made Anna.”	あなたがどれだけアンナを幸せにしたのか考えてみなさい。」

Next morning Mr. Nelson came driving up with a load of Pa’s wood that he had cut.	次の朝、ネルソンさんがパパが切った木を積んでやってきた。
He worked all day, chopping wood for Ma, and the woodpile was big again.	彼は一日中働いて、ママのために木を割り、薪の山はまた大きくなった。

“You see how good Mr. Nelson is to us,” said Ma.	「ネルソンさんがどれだけ私たちに親切にしてくれているかわかるでしょう」とママは言った。
“The Nelsons are real good neighbours.	「ネルソンさんたちは本当に良い隣人です。
Now aren’t you glad you gave Anna your doll?”	アンナに人形をあげたこと、よかったでしょう?」

“No, Ma,” said Laura.	「いいえ、ママ」とローラは言った。
Her heart was crying all the time for Pa and for Charlotte.	彼女の心はパパとシャーロッテのためにずっと泣いていた。

Cold rains fell again, and froze.	冷たい雨がまた降り、凍った。
No more letters came from Pa.	パパからの手紙はもう来なかった。
Ma thought he must have started to come home.	ママはパパが帰り始めたに違いないと思った。
In the night Laura listened to the wind and wondered where Pa was.	夜、ローラは風の音を聞きながら、パパはどこにいるのだろうと思った。
Often in the mornings the woodpile was full of driven snow, and still Pa did not come.	朝になると薪の山は吹きだまりの雪でいっぱいになることが多かったが、それでもパパは帰って来なかった。
Every Saturday afternoon Laura put on her stockings and shoes, wrapped herself in Ma’s big shawl, and went to the Nelsons’.	毎週土曜日の午後、ローラは靴下と靴を履き、ママの大きなショールを羽織ってネルソン家に行った。

She knocked and asked if Mr. Nelson had got a letter for Ma.	彼女はノックして、ネルソンさんがママ宛ての手紙を受け取ったかどうか尋ねた。
She would not go in, she did not want to see Charlotte there.	彼女は中に入らなかった。そこでシャーロットと会いたくなかった。
Mrs. Nelson said that no letter had come, and Laura thanked her and went home.	ネルソン夫人は手紙は来ていないと言い、ローラはお礼を言って家に帰った。

One stormy day she caught sight of something in the Nelsons’ barnyard.	ある嵐の日、彼女はネルソン家の納屋で何かを見た。
She stood still and looked.	彼女は立ち止まって見た。
It was Charlotte, drowned and frozen in a puddle.	それはシャーロットで、水たまりで溺れて凍っていた。
Anna had thrown Charlotte away.	アンナはシャーロットを捨てていた。

Laura could hardly go on to the door.	ローラはドアまで歩いて行くのがやっとだった。
She could hardly speak to Mrs. Nelson.	彼女はネルソン夫人に話すのがやっとだった。
Mrs. Nelson said the weather was so bad that Mr. Nelson had not gone to town, but he would surely go next week.	ネルソン夫人は天気がとても悪かったのでネルソンさんは町に行かなかったが、来週は必ず行くだろうと言った。
Laura said, “Thank you, ma’am,” and turned away.	ローラは「ありがとうございます」と言って、背を向けた。

Sleety rain was beating down on Charlotte.	みぞれ混じりの雨がシャーロッテに降り注いでいた。
Anna had scalped her.	アンナは彼女の頭皮を剥いだ。
Charlotte’s beautiful wavy hair was ripped loose, and her smiling yarn mouth was torn and bleeding red on her cheek.	シャーロッテの美しいウェーブのかかった髪は引き裂かれ、彼女の微笑む糸の口は引き裂かれ、頬に赤い血が流れていた。
One shoe-button eye was gone.	靴のボタンの目が一つなくなっていた。
But she was Charlotte.	しかし、彼女はシャーロッテだった。

Laura snatched her up and hid her under the shawl.	ローラは彼女をひったくり、ショールの下に隠した。
She ran panting against the angry wind and the sleet, all the way home.	彼女は怒った風とみぞれに逆らって、家までずっと息を切らして走った。
Ma started up, frightened, when she saw Laura.	ママはローラを見て、びっくりして飛び起きた。

“What is it! What is it?	「どうしたの! どうしたの?

“Mr. Nelson didn’t go to town,” Laura answered.	「ネルソンさんは町に行かなかった」とローラは答えた。
“But, oh, Ma—look.”	「でも、ああ、ママ、見て」

“What on earth?” said Ma.

「いったい何?」とママは言った。

“It’s Charlotte,” Laura said.	「シャーロッテよ」とローラは言った。
“I—I stole her. I don’t care, Ma, I don’t care if I did!”	「私、彼女を盗んだの。気にしないよ、ママ、盗んだとしても気にしないよ!」

“There, there, don’t be so excited,” said Ma.	「いい子だから、そんなに興奮しないで」とママは言った。
“Come here and tell me all about it,” and she drew Laura down on her lap in the rocking chair.	「こっちに来て、全部話してごらん」と言って、ロッキングチェアに座ったママはローラを膝に抱き寄せた。

They decided that it had not been wrong for Laura to take back Charlotte.	ローラがシャーロットを持ち帰ったことは間違っていなかったと二人は結論を出した。
It had been a terrible experience for Charlotte, but Laura had rescued her and Ma promised to make her as good as new.	シャーロットにとってはひどい経験だったが、ローラが彼女を救い出し、ママは彼女を新品同様にすると約束した。

Ma ripped off her torn hair and the bits of her mouth and her remaining eye and her face.	ママはシャーロットのちぎれた髪の毛や口の部分、残った目や顔の部分をはぎ取った。
They thawed Charlotte and wrung her out, and Ma washed her thoroughly clean and starched and ironed her while Laura chose from the scrapbag a new, pale pink face for her and new button eyes.	二人はシャーロットを解凍して絞り、ママが彼女をきれいに洗って糊付けしてアイロンをかけている間に、ローラは端切れ袋から彼女のために新しい淡いピンクの顔と新しいボタンの目を探した。

That night when Laura went to bed she laid Charlotte in her box.	その夜、ローラは寝るときにシャーロットを箱に寝かせた。
Charlotte was clean and crisp, her red mouth smiled, her eyes shone black, and she had golden-brown yarn hair braided in two wee braids and tied with blue yarn bows.	シャーロットはきれいでパリッとしていて、赤い口は微笑み、目は黒く輝き、金茶色の毛糸の髪は2本の小さな三つ編みになっていて、青い毛糸の蝶結びで結ばれていた。

Laura went to sleep cuddled against Mary under the patchwork comforters.	ローラはパッチワークの掛け布団の下でメアリーに寄り添って眠りについた。
The wind was howling and sleety rain beat on the roof.	風が吹き荒れ、みぞれが屋根を打った。
It was so cold that Laura and Mary pulled the comforters over their heads.	とても寒かったので、ローラとメアリーは掛け布団を頭からかぶった。

A terrific crash woke them.	ものすごい音で2人は目を覚ました。
They were scared in the dark under the comforters.	2人は掛け布団の下で暗闇に怯えた。
Then they heard a loud voice downstairs.	すると、2人は階下で大きな声を聞いた。
It said,	声は言った。

“I declare! I dropped that armful of wood, didn’t I?”

「宣言する! あの薪の束を落としてしまったな?」

Ma was laughing, “You did that on purpose, Charles, to wake up the girls.”

ママは笑っていた。「チャールズ、あなたはわざとやったのよ、娘たちを起こすために。」

Laura flew screaming out of bed and screaming down the ladder.	ローラは叫びながらベッドから飛び出し、叫びながらはしごを降りた。
She jumped into Pa’s arms, and so did Mary.	彼女はパパの腕に飛び込み、メアリーもそうした。
Then what a racket of talking, laughing, jumping up and down!	それから、なんておしゃべり、笑い、飛び跳ねの騒ぎだったことか!

Pa’s blue eyes twinkled.	パパの青い目がきらめいた。
His hair stood straight up.	彼の髪は真っ直ぐに立っていた。
He was wearing new, whole boots.	彼は新しい、完全なブーツを履いていた。
He had walked two hundred miles from eastern Minnesota.	彼はミネソタ東部から200マイル歩いてきた。
He had walked from town in the night, in the storm.	彼は夜、嵐の中、町から歩いてきた。
Now he was here!	今、彼はここにいた!

“For shame, girls, in your nightgowns!” said Ma.	「恥ずかしいよ、娘たち、寝巻き姿で!」とママは言った。
“Go dress yourselves.	「着替えなさい。
Breakfast is almost ready.”	朝食はもうすぐできるよ。」

They dressed faster than ever before.	彼女たちはこれまでになく素早く着替えた。
They tumbled down the ladder and hugged Pa, and washed their hands and faces and hugged Pa, and smoothed their hair and hugged him.	彼女たちは梯子を降りてパパを抱きしめ、手を洗い顔を洗ってパパを抱きしめ、髪を整えてパパを抱きしめた。
Jack waggled in circles	ジャックはぐるぐる回った。
and Carrie pounded the table with her spoon and sang, “Pa’s come home! Pa’s come home!”	キャリーはスプーンでテーブルを叩き、「パパが帰ってきた! パパが帰ってきた!」と歌った。

At last they were all at the table.	ついにみんながテーブルについた。
Pa said he had been too busy, toward the last, to write.	パパは、最後は忙しすぎて手紙を書けなかったと言った。
He said, “They kept us humping on that thresher from before dawn till after dark.	パパは言った、「あいつらは私たちを夜明け前から暗くなるまで脱穀機で働かせたんだ。
And when I could start home, I didn’t stop to write.	そして、家に向かう時も、手紙を書くために立ち止まらなかった。
I didn’t bring any presents, either, but I’ve got money to buy them.”	プレゼントも何も持ってこなかったけど、買うためのお金は持ってきたよ。」

“The best present you could bring us, Charles, was coming home,” Ma told him.

「あなたが私たちに持ってきてくれる最高のプレゼントは、家に帰ってくることよ、チャールズ」とママはパパに言った。

After breakfast Pa went to see the stock.	朝食の後、パパは家畜を見に行った。
They all went with him and Jack stayed close at his heels.	みんなパパと一緒に行き、ジャックはパパの踵の近くにいた。
Pa was pleased that Sam and David and Spot looked so well.	パパはサムとデイビッドとスポットがとても元気そうに見えて嬉しかった。
He said he couldn’t have taken better care of everything, himself.	パパは、自分自身でもこれ以上うまく世話をすることはできなかっただろうと言った。
Ma told him that Mary and Laura had been a great help to her.	ママは、メアリーとローラがとても助けてくれたとパパに言った。

“Gosh!” Pa said.	「おや!」とパパは言った。
“It’s good to be home.”	「家に帰って来れてよかった」
Then he asked, “What’s the matter with your feet, Laura?”	それからパパは「ローラ、足はどうしたんだ?」と尋ねた。

She had forgotten her feet.	ローラは自分の足のことを忘れていた。
She could walk without limping when she remembered to.	ローラは思い出したときには足を引きずらずに歩くことができた。
She said, “My shoes hurt, Pa.”	ローラは「パパ、靴が痛いの」と言った。

In the house, Pa sat down and took Carrie on his knee.	家の中でパパは座り、キャリーを膝に乗せた。
Then he reached down and felt of Laura’s shoes.	それからパパは手を伸ばしてローラの靴を触った。

“Ouch! My toes are tight!” Laura exclaimed.

「痛い! つま先がきつい!」とローラは叫んだ。

“I should say they are!” said Pa.	「きついだろうね!」とパパは言った。
“Your feet have grown since last winter.	「去年の冬から足が大きくなったんだ。
How are yours, Mary?”	メアリー、君のはどうか?」

Mary said her toes were tight, too.

メアリーもつま先がきついと言った。

“Take off your shoes, Mary,” said Pa.	「メアリー、靴を脱いで」とパパは言った。
“And Laura, you put them on.”	「そしてローラ、それを履いてみろ」

Mary’s shoes did not pinch Laura’s feet.	メアリーの靴はローラの足を締め付けなかった。
They were good shoes, without one rip or hole in them.	それは良い靴で、裂け目や穴は一つもなかった。

“They will look almost like new when I have greased them well,” said Pa.	「油を塗ればほとんど新品のように見えるだろう」とパパは言った。
“Mary must have new shoes.	「メアリーは新しい靴が必要だ。
Laura can wear Mary’s, and Laura’s shoes can wait for Carrie to grow to them.	ローラはメアリーのを履けるし、ローラの靴はキャリーが大きくなるまで待てる。
It won’t take her long.	そんなに時間はかからない。
Now what else is lacking, Caroline?	他に何が足りない、キャロライン?
Think what we need, and we’ll get what we can of it.	何が必要か考えてみろ、そうすればできる限り手に入れよう。
Just as soon as I can hitch up we’re all going to town!”	馬車を用意したら、みんなで町に行くぞ!」
