Chapter 28: The Letter

第28章: 手紙

All day long Laura missed Pa, and at night when the wind blew lonesomely over the dark land, she felt hollow and aching.

ローラは一日中パパを恋しく思い、夜になると暗い大地に寂しく風が吹き、彼女は空虚で痛みを感じた。

At first she talked about him;	最初は彼女は彼について話した。
she wondered how far he had walked that day;	彼女は彼がその日どれだけ歩いたのか気になった。
she hoped his old, patched boots were lasting;	彼女は彼の古い継ぎはぎだらけのブーツが長持ちすることを願った。
she wondered where he was camping that night.	彼女は彼がその夜どこでキャンプしているのか気になった。
Later she did not speak about him to Ma.	その後彼女は彼についてママに話さなかった。
Ma was thinking about him all the time and she did not like to talk about it.	ママはいつも彼のことを考えていて、それについて話すのが好きではなかった。
She did not like even to count the days till Saturday.	彼女は土曜日までの日数を数えることさえ嫌だった。

“The time will go faster,” she said, “if we think of other things.”

「他のことを考えていれば、時間が早く過ぎるよ」と彼女は言った。

All day Saturday they hoped that Mr. Nelson was finding a letter from Pa at the post-office in town.	土曜日は一日中、ネルソンさんが町の郵便局でパパからの手紙を見つけてくれることを願っていた。
Laura and Jack went far along the prairie road to wait for Mr. Nelson’s wagon.	ローラとジャックはネルソンさんの荷馬車を待つために、大草原の道を遠くまで行った。
The grasshoppers had eaten everything, and now they were going away, not in one big cloud as they had come, but in little, short-flying clouds.	バッタは全てを食べ尽くし、今や去って行こうとしていた。来たときのような大きな群れではなく、小さな群れになって短い距離を飛んでいった。
Still, millions of grasshoppers were left.	それでも、何百万匹ものバッタが残っていた。

There was no letter from Pa.	パパからの手紙はなかった。
“Never mind,” Ma said.	「気にしないで」とママは言った。
“One will come.”	「手紙は来るでしょう」

Once when Laura was slowly coming up the knoll without a letter, she thought, “Suppose no letter ever comes?”

ある時、ローラが手紙を受け取らずにゆっくりと丘を登っていた時、「もし手紙が来なかったらどうしよう」と思った。

She tried not to think that again.	彼女は二度とそう考えないようにした。
But she did.	しかし、彼女はそうした。
One day she looked at Mary and knew that Mary was thinking it, too.	ある日、彼女はメアリーを見て、メアリーも同じことを考えていることを知った。

That night Laura could not bear it any longer.	その夜、ローラはもう我慢できなかった。
She asked Ma, “Pa will come home, won’t he?”	彼女はママに「パパは帰ってくるよね?」と尋ねた。

“Of course, Pa will come home!” Ma exclaimed.	「もちろん、パパは帰ってくるよ!」とママは叫んだ。
Then Laura and Mary knew that Ma, too, was afraid that something had happened to Pa.	その時、ローラとメアリーは、ママもパパに何かあったのではないかと心配していることを知った。

Perhaps his boots had fallen to pieces and he was limping barefooted.	おそらく彼のブーツはバラバラになっていて、彼は裸足で足を引きずっていた。
Perhaps cattle had hurt him.	おそらく牛が彼を傷つけたのだろう。
Perhaps a train had hit him.	おそらく電車が彼をはねたのだろう。
He had not taken his gun;	彼は銃を持っていなかった。
perhaps wolves had got him.	おそらく狼が彼を襲ったのだろう。
Maybe in dark woods at night a panther had leaped on him from a tree.	もしかしたら夜の暗い森で豹が木から彼に飛びかかったのかもしれない。

The next Saturday afternoon, when Laura and Jack were starting to meet Mr. Nelson, she saw him coming across the footbridge.	次の土曜日の午後、ローラとジャックがネルソンさんに会いに出かけようとした時、彼女は彼が歩道橋を渡って来るのを見た。
Something white was in his hand.	彼の手には白い何かがあった。
Laura flew down the knoll.	ローラは丘を駆け下りた。
The white thing was a letter.	白い物は手紙だった。

“Oh, thank you! Thank you!” Laura said.	「ああ、ありがとう! ありがとう!」とローラは言った。
She ran to the house so fast that she could not breathe.	彼女は息もつかせないほど速く家まで走った。
Ma was washing Carrie’s face.	ママはキャリーの顔を洗っていた。
She took the letter in her shaking wet hands, and sat down.	彼女は震える濡れた手で手紙を受け取り、座った。

“It’s from Pa,” she said.	「パパからよ」と彼女は言った。
Her hand shook so she could hardly take a hairpin from her hair.	彼女の手は震え、髪からヘアピンを外すのもままならなかった。
She slit the envelope and drew out the letter.	彼女は封筒を切り裂き、手紙を取り出した。
She unfolded it, and there was a piece of paper money.	彼女はそれを広げると、紙幣が一枚入っていた。

“Pa’s all right,” Ma said.	「パパは大丈夫よ」とママは言った。
She snatched her apron up to her face and cried.	彼女はエプロンを顔に押し当てて泣いた。

Her wet face came out of the apron shining with joy.	彼女の濡れた顔がエプロンから出てきて、喜びに輝いていた。
She kept wiping her eyes while she read the letter to Mary and Laura.	彼女はメアリーとローラに手紙を読み聞かせながら、ずっと目を拭いていた。

Pa had had to walk three hundred miles before he found a job.	パパは仕事を見つけるまで300マイルも歩かなければならなかった。
Now he was working in the wheat-fields and getting a dollar a day.	今は小麦畑で働いていて、1日1ドルもらっている。
He sent Ma five dollars and kept three for new boots.	彼はママに5ドルを送り、新しいブーツのために3ドルを残した。
Crops were good where he was, and if Ma and the girls were making out all right, he would stay there as long as the work lasted.	彼のいるところでは作物がよく育ち、ママと娘たちがうまくやれているなら、仕事がある限りそこにいるつもりだった。

They missed him and wanted him to come home.	彼女たちは彼がいなくて寂しく、帰ってきてほしいと思っていた。
But he was safe, and already he had new boots.	しかし、彼は安全で、すでに新しいブーツを履いていた。
They were very happy that day.	その日、彼女たちはとても幸せだった。
