One day Laura and Jack wandered down to the creek. ある日、ローラとジャックは小川まで歩いて行った。

All over the knoll grasshoppers were sitting still with their tails down in the ground. 丘のいたるところにバッタが尾を地面に下ろしてじっと座っていた。

They did not stir, even when Laura poked them. ローラがつついても、彼らは動かなかった。

“The ground’s honeycombed with them. 「地面がバッタの卵で蜂の巣みたいになっている。

Look at the dooryard, and you’ll see the pits where the eggs are buried a couple of inches deep. 庭を見てみろ、卵が数インチの深さに埋められた穴が見えるだろう。
