Chapter 25: The Glittering Cloud

第25章: きらめく雲

Now the wheat was almost ready to cut.

小麦は刈り取る時期が近づいていた。

Every day Pa looked at it.	パパは毎日小麦を眺めていた。
Every night he talked about it, and showed Laura some long, stiff wheat-heads.	毎晩パパは小麦について話し、ローラに長く硬い麦の穂を見せた。
The plump grains were getting harder in their little husks.	ふっくらとした麦粒は小さな殻の中で硬くなってきていた。
Pa said the weather was perfect for ripening wheat.	パパは小麦の熟成には天候が完璧だと言った。

“If this keeps up,” he said, “We’ll start harvesting next week.”

「このままいけば、来週には収穫を始められる」とパパは言った。

The weather was very hot.	天気はとても暑かった。
The thin, high sky was too hot to look at.	薄く高い空は熱すぎて見ることができなかった。
Air rose up in waves from the whole prairie, as it does from a hot stove.	空気は熱いストーブから出るように、大草原全体から波のように立ち上った。
In the schoolhouse the children panted like lizards, and the sticky pine-juice dripped down the board walls.	校舎の中では子供達がトカゲのように息を切らし、ねばねばした松の樹液が板壁を伝って滴り落ちていた。

Saturday morning Laura went walking with Pa to look at the wheat.	土曜日の朝、ローラは小麦を見にパパと歩いて行った。
It was almost as tall as Pa.	それはほとんどパパと同じくらい高かった。
He lifted her onto his shoulder so that she could see over the heavy, bending tops.	彼は彼女を肩に抱き上げ、重く曲がった穂先の向こうを見渡せるようにした。
The field was greeny gold.	畑は緑がかった金色だった。

At the dinner table Pa told Ma about it.	夕食の席でパパはママにその話をしました。
He had never seen such a crop.	彼はそのような作物を見たことがなかった。
There were forty bushels to the acre, and wheat was a dollar a bushel.	1エーカーあたり40ブッシェルあり、小麦は1ブッシェル1ドルだった。
They were rich now.	彼らは今や金持ちだった。
This was a wonderful country.	これは素晴らしい国だった。

Laura listened and thought, now Pa would get his new boots.	ローラは耳を傾け、パパは新しいブーツを手に入れると思った。

She sat facing the open door and the sunshine streaming through it.	彼女は開いたドアとそこから差し込む日差しに向かって座った。
Something seemed to dim the sunshine.	何かが日差しを暗くしたようだった。
Laura rubbed her eyes and looked again.	ローラは目をこすり、もう一度見た。
The sunshine really was dim.	日差しは本当に暗かった。
It grew dimmer until there was no sunshine.	日差しがなくなるまで暗くなった。

“I do believe a storm is coming up,” said Ma.	「嵐が来ていると思う」とママは言った。
“There must be a cloud over the sun.”	「太陽の上に雲があるに違いない」

Pa got up quickly and went to the door.	パパは素早く起き上がり、ドアに行った。
A storm might hurt the wheat.	嵐は小麦を傷つけるかもしれない。
He looked out, then he went out.	彼は外を見て、それから外に出た。

The light was queer.	光は奇妙だった。
It was not like the changed light before a storm.	それは嵐の前の変わった光のようではなかったのである。
The air did not press down as it did before a storm.	空気は嵐の前のように押し下げなかった。
Laura was frightened, she did not know why.	ローラは怖かったが、理由はわからなかった。

She ran outdoors, where Pa stood looking up at the sky.	彼女は屋外に走り、パパが空を見上げているところに出た。
Ma and Mary came out, too, and Pa asked, “What do you make of that, Caroline?”	ママとメアリーも出てきて、パパは「どう思う、キャロライン?」と尋ねた。

A cloud was over the sun.	雲が太陽を覆っていた。
It was not like any cloud they had ever seen before.	それは彼らが今まで見たどんな雲とも違っていた。
It was a cloud of something like snowflakes, but they were larger than snowflakes, and thin and glittering.	それは雪片のようなものの雲だったが、雪片よりも大きく、薄く、きらめいていた。
Light shone through each flickering particle.	光がちらちらする粒子のそれぞれを通して輝いていた。

There was no wind.	風はなかった。
The grasses were still and the hot air did not stir, but the edge of the cloud came on across the sky faster than wind.	草は静かで、熱い空気は動かなかったが、雲の端は風よりも速く空を横切ってやってきた。
The hair stood up on Jack’s neck.	ジャックの首の毛が逆立った。
All at once he made a frightful sound up at that cloud, a growl and a whine.	彼は突然、その雲に向かって恐ろしい音を立てた、唸り声と泣き声だった。

Plunk! something hit Laura’s head and fell to the ground.	ドスン! 何かがローラの頭に当たって地面に落ちた。
She looked down and saw the largest grasshopper she had ever seen.	彼女は見下ろして、今まで見た中で一番大きなバッタを見ました。
Then huge brown grasshoppers were hitting the ground all around her, hitting her head and her face and her arms.	すると、巨大な茶色のバッタが彼女の周りの地面にぶつかり、彼女の頭と顔と腕にぶつかった。
They came thudding down like hail.	彼らは雹のようにドスンと落ちてきた。

The cloud was hailing grasshoppers.	雲はバッタの雨を降らせていた。

Their bodies hid the sun and made darkness.	彼らの体は太陽を隠し、暗闇を作った。

The rasping whirring of their wings filled the whole air and they hit the ground and the house with the noise of a hailstorm.	彼らの羽の耳障りな羽音が空気全体を満たし、彼らは雹の嵐のような音を立てて地面や家にぶつかった。

Laura tried to beat them off.	ローラは彼らを打ち負かそうとした。

They looked at her with bulging eyes, turning their heads this way and that.	彼らは頭を左右に振りながら、飛び出した目で彼女を見た。
Mary ran screaming into the house.	メアリーは叫びながら家の中に走っていった。
Grasshoppers covered the ground, there was not one bare bit to step on.	バッタが地面を覆い、踏みつけられる裸地は1つもなかった。
Laura had to step on grasshoppers and they smashed squirming and slimy under her feet.	ローラはバッタを踏まなければならず、バッタは彼女の足の下でぐにゃぐにゃとぬるぬるに押しつぶされた。

Ma was slamming the windows shut, all around the house.	ママは家の周りの窓をバタンと閉めていた。
Pa came and stood just inside the front door, looking out.	パパがやってきて、玄関のドアのすぐ内側に立って外を眺めた。
Laura and Jack stood close beside him.	ローラとジャックは彼のすぐそばに立った。
Grasshoppers beat down from the sky and swarmed thick over the ground.	バッタは空から降り注ぎ、地面の上に群がった。
Their long wings were folded and their strong legs took them hopping everywhere.	彼らの長い羽は折り畳まれ、彼らの強い脚は彼らを至る所に飛び跳ねさせた。
The air whirred and the roof went on sounding like a roof in a hailstorm.	空気が唸り、屋根は雹の嵐の中の屋根のような音を立て続けた。

Then Laura heard another sound, one big sound made of tiny nips and snips and gnawings.

それからローラは別の音を聞いた、小さな噛みつきや切り取りや齧りによって作られた一つの大きな音を。

“The wheat!” Pa shouted.	「小麦だ!」パパは叫んだ。
He dashed out the back door and ran toward the wheat-field.	彼は裏口から飛び出し、小麦畑に向かって走った。

The grasshoppers were eating.	バッタは食べていた。
You could not hear one grasshopper eat, unless you listened very carefully while you held him and fed him grass.	バッタ一匹が食べる音は、それを捕まえて草を食べさせている間にとても注意深く聞かない限り聞こえなかった。
Millions and millions of grasshoppers were eating now.	何百万というバッタが今食べていた。
You could hear the millions of jaws biting and chewing.	何百万という顎が噛み、咀嚼する音が聞こえた。

Pa came running back to the stable.	パパは馬小屋に走って戻ってきた。
Through the window Laura saw him hitching Sam and David to the wagon.	ローラは窓からパパがサムとデイビッドに荷車を引かせているのを見かけた。
He began pitching old dirty hay from the manure-pile into the wagon, as fast as he could.	パパはできる限り早く、肥料の山から古い汚れた干し草を荷車に投げ込み始めた。
Ma ran out, took the other pitchfork and helped him.	ママは走り出て、もう一つの熊手を取り、パパを手伝った。
Then he drove away to the wheat-field and Ma followed the wagon.	それからパパは麦畑に向かって走り去り、ママは荷車について行った。

Pa drove around the field, throwing out little piles of stuff as he went.	パパは畑をぐるぐる回り、小さな干し草の山を投げ捨てていった。
Ma stooped over one, then a thread of smoke rose from it and spread.	ママはそのうちの一つに身をかがめると、そこから一筋の煙が立ち上り、広がった。
Ma lighted pile after pile.	ママは山を次から次へと火をつけた。
Laura watched till a smudge of smoke hid the field and Ma and Pa and the wagon.	ローラは、煙が畑とママとパパと荷車を隠すまで見ていた。

Grasshoppers were still falling from the sky.	バッタは空から降り続けていた。
The light was still dim because grasshoppers covered the sun.	バッタが太陽を覆っていたので、光は依然として薄暗かった。

Ma came back to the house, and in the closed lean-to she took off her dress and her petticoats and killed the grasshoppers she shook out of them.	ママは家に戻り、閉じた小屋の中でドレスとペチコートを脱ぎ、バッタを振り落として殺した。
She had lighted fires all around the wheat-field.	彼女は麦畑の周りに火を灯していた。
Perhaps smoke would keep the grasshoppers from eating the wheat.	おそらく煙がバッタが麦を食べるのを防ぐだろう。

Ma and Mary and Laura were quiet in the shut, smothery house.	ママとメアリーとローラは閉ざされた息苦しい家の中で静かにしていた。
Carrie was so little that she cried, even in Ma’s arms.	キャリーは小さすぎて、ママの腕の中でさえ泣いていた。

All over the ground was a crawling, hopping mass of grasshoppers.	地面のいたるところにバッタが這い回り、飛び跳ねていた。
They were eating all the soft, short grass off the knoll.	彼らは丘の上の柔らかく短い草をすべて食べていた。
The tall prairie grasses swayed and bent and fell.	背の高い草原の草は揺れ、曲がり、倒れた。

“Oh, look,” Laura said, low, at the window.

「ああ、見て」ローラは窓に向かって低い声で言った。

They were eating the willow tops.	彼らは柳のてっぺんを食べていた。
The willows’ leaves were thin and bare twigs stuck out.	柳の葉は薄く、むき出しの小枝が突き出ていた。
Then whole branches were bare, and knobby with masses of grasshoppers.	すると、枝全体がむき出しになり、バッタの群れでこぶだらけになった。

“I don’t want to look any more,” Mary said, and she went away from the window.	「もう見たくない」とメアリーは言い、窓から離れた。
Laura did not want to look any more, either, but she could not stop looking.	ローラももう見たくないと思ったが、見るのをやめることはできなかった。

The hens were funny.	雌鶏はおかしかった。
The two hens and their gawky pullets were eating grasshoppers with all their might.	2羽の雌鶏とそのぎこちない若鶏は、全力でバッタを食べていた。
They were used to stretching their necks out low and running fast after grasshoppers and not catching them.	彼らは首を低く伸ばしてバッタを追いかけ、捕まえられないことに慣れていた。
Every time they stretched out now, they got a grasshopper right then.	今は首を伸ばすたびにバッタを捕まえることができた。
They were surprised.	彼らは驚いていた。
They kept stretching out their necks and trying to run in all directions at once.	彼らは首を伸ばし続け、一度にあらゆる方向に走ろうとした。

“Well, we won’t have to buy feed for the hens,” said Ma.	「これで、鶏の餌を買わなくて済むよね」とママは言った。
“There’s no great loss without some gain.”	「大きな損失には、必ず何かの利益が伴うものだ」

The green garden rows were wilting down.	緑の菜園の列は萎れ始めていた。
The potatoes, the carrots, the beets and beans were being eaten away.	ジャガイモ、ニンジン、ビート、豆が食べられていた。
The long leaves were eaten off the cornstalks, and the tassels, and the ears of young corn in their green husks fell covered with grasshoppers.	トウモロコシの長い葉は食べられ、房や緑の皮に包まれた若いトウモロコシの穂はバッタに覆われて落ちた。

There was nothing anybody could do about it.

誰もそれに対して何もできなかった。

Smoke still hid the wheat-field.	煙がまだ麦畑を隠していた。
Sometimes Laura saw Pa moving dimly in it.	時々ローラはパパがその中でぼんやりと動いているのを見た。
He stirred up the smouldering fires and thick smoke hid him again.	彼はくすぶっている火をかき回し、濃い煙が再び彼を隠した。

When it was time to go for Spot, Laura put on stockings and shoes and a shawl.	スポットを迎えに行く時間になると、ローラは靴下と靴とショールを身に着けた。
Spot was standing in the old ford of Plum Creek, shaking her skin and switching her tail.	スポットはプラム・クリークの古い浅瀬に立って、皮膚を震わせ、尻尾を振っていた。
The herd went mournfully lowing beyond the old dugout.	群れは悲しげに鳴きながら古い掘っ立て小屋を通り過ぎていった。
Laura was sure that cattle could not eat grass so full of grasshoppers.	ローラは、牛がバッタだらけの草を食べられないことを確信していた。
If the grasshoppers ate all the grass, the cattle would starve.	バッタが草を全部食べたら、牛は飢えてしまう。

Grasshoppers were thick under her petticoats and on her dress and shawl.	バッタは彼女のペチコートの下やドレスやショールの上にびっしりといた。
She kept striking them off her face and hands.	彼女は顔や手からバッタを払い落とし続けた。
Her shoes and Spot’s feet crunched grasshoppers.	彼女の靴とスポットの足はバッタを踏みつぶした。

Ma came out in a shawl to do the milking.	ママはショールを着て搾乳に出てきた。
Laura helped her.	ローラは彼女を手伝った。
They could not keep grasshoppers out of the milk.	彼女たちはバッタが牛乳に入らないようにすることはできなかった。
Ma had brought a cloth to cover the pail but they could not keep it covered while they milked into it.	ママは桶を覆う布を持ってきていたが、搾乳している間は覆い続けることはできなかった。
Ma skimmed out the grasshoppers with a tin cup.	ママはブリキのカップでバッタをすくい取った。

Grasshoppers went into the house with them.	バッタは彼女たちと一緒に家に入った。
Their clothes were full of grasshoppers.	彼女たちの服はバッタだらけだった。
Some jumped onto the hot stove where Mary was starting supper.	何匹かはメアリーが夕食の準備を始めていた熱いストーブに飛び乗った。
Ma covered the food till they had chased and smashed every grasshopper.	ママは彼女たちがバッタを全部追いかけてつぶすまで食べ物を覆った。
She swept them up and shoveled them into the stove.	彼女はそれらを掃き集めてストーブに放り込んだ。

Pa came into the house long enough to eat supper while Sam and David were eating theirs.	パパはサムとデイビッドたちが夕食を食べている間に夕食を食べるために家に入ってきた。
Ma did not ask him what was happening to the wheat.	ママは小麦に何が起こっているのか彼に尋ねなかった。
She only smiled and said: “Don’t worry, Charles.	彼女はただ微笑んで言った。「心配しないで、チャールズ。
We’ve always got along.”	私たちはいつもうまくやってきたよ。」

Pa’s throat rasped and Ma said: “Have another cup of tea, Charles.	パパの喉がかすれ、ママは言った。「もう一杯お茶を飲みなさい、チャールズ。
It will help get the smoke out of your throat.”	煙を喉から出すのに役立つよ。」

When Pa had drunk the tea, he went back to the wheat-field with another load of old hay and manure.

お茶を飲み終えると、パパは古い干し草と肥料をもう一度積んで麦畑に戻った。

In bed, Laura and Mary could still hear the whirring and snipping and chewing.	ベッドの中で、ローラとメアリーはまだカチカチと音を立てて噛む音を聞くことができた。
Laura felt claws crawling on her.	ローラは爪が自分の上を這うのを感じた。
There were no grasshoppers in bed, but she could not brush the feeling off her arms and cheeks.	ベッドにはバッタはいませんでしたが、彼女は腕や頬の感覚を払いのけることができませんでした。
In the dark she saw grasshoppers’ bulging eyes and felt their claws crawling until she went to sleep.	暗闇の中で、彼女はバッタの膨らんだ目を見て、眠りにつくまで爪が這うのを感じた。

Pa was not downstairs next morning.	翌朝、パパは階下にいなかった。
All night he had been working to keep the smoke over the wheat, and he did not come to breakfast.	彼は一晩中、小麦の上に煙を保つために働いていたので、朝食には来なかった。
He was still working.	彼はまだ働いていた。

The whole prairie was changed.	大草原全体が変わっていた。
The grasses did not wave; they had fallen in ridges.	草は揺れず、畝に倒れていた。
The rising sun made all the prairie rough with shadows where the tall grasses had sunk against each other.	昇る朝日が、背の高い草が互いに沈み合った影で大草原全体を荒々しくした。

The willow trees were bare.	柳の木はむき出しだった。
In the plum thickets only a few plumpits hung to the leafless branches.	プラムの茂みには、葉のない枝にプラムが数個ぶら下がっているだけだった。
The nipping, clicking, gnawing sound of the grasshoppers’ eating was still going on.	バッタが食べる時の、かじる音、カチカチ音、かじる音がまだ続いていた。

At noon Pa came driving the wagon out of the smoke.	正午にパパが煙の中から馬車を運転してやってきた。
He put Sam and David into the stable, and slowly came to the house.	彼はサムとデイビッドをつれて馬小屋に入り、ゆっくりと家に向かった。
His face was black with smoke and his eyeballs were red.	彼の顔は煙で真っ黒で、眼球は赤かった。
He hung his hat on the nail behind the door and sat down at the table.	彼は帽子をドアの後ろの釘に掛けて、テーブルに腰を下ろした。

“It’s no use, Caroline,” he said.	「無駄だ、キャロライン」と彼は言った。
“Smoke won’t stop them.	「煙では彼らを止められない。
They keep dropping down through it and hopping in from all sides.	彼らは煙の中を降りてきて、四方八方から飛び込んでくる。
The wheat is falling now.	小麦は今倒れている。
They’re cutting it off like a scythe.	彼らはそれを大鎌のように刈り取っている。

He put his elbows on the table and hid his face with his hands.	彼はテーブルに肘をつき、手で顔を隠した。
Laura and Mary sat still.	ローラとメアリーはじっと座っていた。
Only Carrie on her high stool rattled her spoon and reached her little hand toward the bread.	高い椅子に座ったキャリーだけがスプーンを鳴らし、小さな手をパンの方に伸ばした。
She was too young to understand.	彼女は理解するには幼すぎた。

“Never mind, Charles,” Ma said.	「気にしないで、チャールズ」とママは言った。
“We’ve been through hard times before.”	「私たちはこれまでにも苦労を経験してきたよ。」

Laura looked down at Pa’s patched boots under the table and her throat swelled and ached.	ローラはテーブルの下にあるパパのつぎはぎだらけのブーツを見下ろし、喉が腫れて痛んだ。
Pa could not have new boots now.	パパは今は新しいブーツを買うことができない。

Pa’s hands came down from his face and he picked up his knife and fork.	パパは顔から手を下ろし、ナイフとフォークを手にした。
His beard smiled, but his eyes would not twinkle.	彼の髭は笑ったが、目は輝かなかった。
They were dull and dim.	目はくすんで暗かった。

“Don’t worry, Caroline,” he said.	「心配するな、キャロライン」と彼は言った。
“We did all we could, and we’ll pull through somehow.”	「私たちはできる限りのことをしたし、どうにかして切り抜けられるさ」

Then Laura remembered that the new house was not paid for.	その時、ローラは新しい家の支払いが済んでいないことを思い出した。
Pa had said he would pay for it when he harvested the wheat.	パパは小麦を収穫したら支払うと言っていた。

It was a quiet meal, and when it was over Pa lay down on the floor and went to sleep.	静かな食事だった。食事が終わるとパパは床に横になって眠りについた。
Ma slipped a pillow under his head and laid her finger on her lips to tell Laura and Mary to be still.	ママはパパの頭の下に枕を置き、ローラとメアリーに静かにするように唇に指を当てた。

They took Carrie into the bedroom and kept her quiet with their paper dolls.	二人はキャリーを寝室に連れて行き、紙人形で彼女を静かにさせた。
The only sound was the sound of the grasshoppers’ eating.	唯一の音はバッタが食べる音だった。

Day after day the grasshoppers kept on eating.	バッタは毎日食べ続けた。
They ate all the wheat and the oats.	バッタは小麦とオート麦を全部食べてしまった。
They ate every green thing—all the garden and all the prairie grass.	バッタは緑のものは全て食べてしまった。庭の植物も草原の草も全てだ。

“Oh, Pa, what will the rabbits do?” Laura asked.	「パパ、ウサギはどうなるの?」とローラは尋ねた。
“And the poor birds?”	「かわいそうな鳥は?」

“Look around you, Laura,” Pa said.

「ローラ、周りを見回してごらん」とパパは言った。

The rabbits had all gone away.	ウサギは全て逃げてしまっていた。
The little birds of the grass tops were gone.	草の上の鳥は全て逃げてしまっていた。
The birds that were left were eating grasshoppers.	残った鳥はバッタを捕食していた。
And prairie hens ran with outstretched necks, gobbling grasshoppers.	草原の雌鶏は首を伸ばして走り、バッタを飲み込んでいた。

When Sunday came, Pa and Laura and Mary walked to Sunday school.	日曜日になると、パパとローラとメアリーは日曜学校まで歩いて行った。
The sun shone so bright and hot that Ma said she would stay at home with Carrie, and Pa left Sam and David in the shady stable.	太陽がとても明るく熱く照っていたので、ママはキャリーと一緒に家にいると言った。そしてパパはサムとデイビッドに日陰の厩舎に残した。

There had been no rain for so long that Laura walked across Plum Creek on dry stones.	長い間雨が降らなかったので、ローラはプラム・クリークを乾いた石の上を歩いて渡った。
The whole prairie was bare and brown.	草原全体がむき出しで茶色だった。
Millions of brown grasshoppers whirred low over it.	何百万もの茶色いバッタがその上を低く飛び回っていた。
Not a green thing was in sight anywhere.	緑のものはどこにも見えなかった。

All the way, Laura and Mary brushed off grasshoppers.	ローラとメアリーは道中ずっとバッタを追い払った。
When they came to the church, brown grasshoppers were thick on their petticoats.	教会に着いた時、茶色いバッタがペチコートにびっしりついていた。
They lifted their skirts and brushed them off before they went in.	彼女たちはスカートを持ち上げて、中に入る前にバッタを追い払った。
But careful as they were, the grasshoppers had spit tobacco-juice on their best Sunday dresses.	しかし、彼女たちがどんなに注意しても、バッタは彼女たちの一番いい日曜日のドレスにタバコの汁を吐きつけた。

Nothing would take out the horrid stains.	どんなことをしてもそのひどい染みは取れなかった。

Many people in town were going back East.	町の多くの人々が東部に戻っていた。
Christy and Cassie had to go.	クリスティとキャシーは行かなければならなかった。
Laura said good-bye to Christy and Mary said good-bye to Cassie, their best friends.	ローラはクリスティに別れを告げ、メアリーはキャシーに別れを告げた。彼女たちは親友だった。

They did not go to school any more.	彼女たちはもう学校に行かなかった。
They must save their shoes for winter and they could not bear to walk barefooted on grasshoppers.	彼女たちは冬のために靴を取っておかなければならなかったし、バッタの上を裸足で歩くのに耐えられなかった。
School would be ended soon, anyway, and Ma said she would teach them through the winter so they would not be behind their classes when school opened again next spring.	いずれにせよ、学校はすぐに終わるだろうし、ママは冬の間彼女たちに教えるので、来春学校が再開したときに授業に遅れを取らないようにすると言った。

Pa worked for Mr. Nelson and earned the use of Mr. Nelson’s plough.	パパはネルソンさんのために働き、ネルソンさんのすきを使えるようにした。
