第23章: 田舎のパーティー

“Will you come to my party?” Laura asked Christy and Maud and Nellie Oleson.	「私のパーティーに来てくれる?」ローラはクリスティとモードとネリー・オルソンに尋ねた。
Mary asked the big girls.	メアリーは大きな女の子たちに尋ねた。
They all said they would come.	みんな来ると言った。

That Saturday morning the new house was specially pretty.	その土曜日の朝、新しい家は特別にきれいだった。
Jack could not come in on the scrubbed floors.	ジャックは磨かれた床の上に来ることができなかった。
The windows were shining and the pink-edged curtains were freshly crisp and white.	窓は輝き、ピンクの縁のカーテンは新しくパリッとして白かった。
Laura and Mary made new starry papers for the shelves, and Ma made vanity cakes.	ローラとメアリーは棚に新しい星の紙を作り、ママはバニティケーキを作った。

She made them with beaten eggs and white flour.	彼女は溶き卵と白い小麦粉でそれらを作った。
She dropped them into a kettle of sizzling fat.	彼女はそれらを焼けるように熱い脂肪のやかんに落とした。
Each one came up bobbing, and floated till it turned itself over, lifting up its honey-brown, puffy bottom.	それぞれがボビングして浮かび、蜂蜜色のふくらんだ底を持ち上げて、ひっくり返るまで浮かんだ。
Then it swelled underneath till it was round, and Ma lifted it out with a fork.	それからそれは丸くなるまで下で膨らみ、ママはフォークでそれを持ち上げた。

She put every one of those cakes in the cupboard.	彼女はそのケーキをすべて食器棚に入れた。
They were for the party.	それらはパーティー用だった。

Laura and Mary and Ma and Carrie were dressed up and waiting when the guests came walking out from town.	ローラとメアリーとママとキャリーは、客が町から歩いて来たときには、めかし込んで待っていた。
Laura had even brushed Jack, though he was always clean and handsome in his white and brown-spotted short fur.	ローラはジャックにもブラシをかけたが、彼はいつも白と茶色の斑点のある短い毛皮で清潔でハンサムだった。

He ran down with Laura to the ford.	彼はローラと一緒に川の浅瀬まで走った。
The girls came laughing and splashing through the sunny water, all except Nellie.	少女たちは、笑いながら、日差しを浴びた水をはねながらやってきたが、ネリーだけはいなかった。
She had to take off her shoes and stockings and she complained that the gravel hurt her feet.	彼女は靴と靴下を脱がなければならず、砂利が足を痛めたと不平を言った。

She was wearing a new dress and big, new hair-ribbon bows.

“Is that Jack?” Christy asked, and they all patted him and said what a good dog he was.	「あれがジャック?」クリスティが尋ね、みんなが彼を撫でて、なんていい犬なんだと言った。
But when he politely wagged to Nellie, she said: “Go away! Don’t you touch my dress!”	しかし、彼が礼儀正しくネリーに尻尾を振ると、彼女は言った。「あっちへ行け! 私のドレスに触るな!」

“Jack wouldn’t touch your dress,” Laura said.

「ジャックはあなたのドレスに触らないよ」ローラは言った。

They went up the path between the blowing grasses and wild flowers, to the house where Ma was waiting.	彼らは風に揺れる草や野生の花の間の小道を、ママが待っている家まで上っていった。
Mary told her the girls’ names one by one, and she smiled her lovely smile and spoke to them.	メアリーは彼女に女の子たちの名前を一人ずつ告げ、彼女は愛らしい笑顔を浮かべて彼女たちに話しかけました。
But Nellie smoothed down her new pretty dress and said to Ma:	しかし、ネリーは新しいきれいなドレスを撫で下ろし、ママに言った。

“Of course I didn’t wear my best dress to just a country party.”

Then Laura didn’t care what Ma had taught her;	するとローラはママが教えてくれたことを気にしなくなった。
she didn’t care if Pa punished her.	パパに罰せられても気にしなかった。
She was going to get even with Nellie for that.	彼女はそのことでネリーに仕返ししようとした。
Nellie couldn’t speak that way to Ma.	ネリーにはママにそんな風に話すことはできなかった。

Ma only smiled and said: “It’s a very pretty dress, Nellie. We’re glad you could come.”	ママはただ微笑んで言った。「とてもきれいなドレスね、ネリー。来てくれて嬉しいよ。」
But Laura was not going to forgive Nellie.	しかし、ローラはネリーを許すつもりはなかった。

The girls liked the pretty house.	少女たちはきれいな家が好きだった。
It was so clean and airy, with sweet-smelling breezes blowing through it and the grassy prairies all around.	とてもきれいで風通しがよく、甘い香りのするそよ風が吹き抜け、周りには草原が広がっていた。
They climbed the ladder and looked at Laura’s and Mary’s very own attic;	彼らははしごを登り、ローラとメアリーだけの屋根裏部屋を見た。
none of them had anything like that.	彼らの誰もそんなものは持っていなかった。
But Nellie asked, “Where are your dolls?”	しかし、ネリーは「あなたの人形はどこ?」と尋ねた。

Laura was not going to show her darling rag Charlotte to Nellie Oleson.	ローラは愛するぼろきれ人形シャーロットをネリー・オルソンに見せようとはしなかった。
She said: “I don’t play with dolls.	彼女は言った。「私は人形で遊ばない。
I play in the creek.”	私は小川で遊ぶの。」

Then they went outdoors with Jack.	それから、彼らはジャックと一緒に外に出た。
Laura showed them the little chicks by the hay-stacks, and they looked at the green garden rows and the thick-growing wheat-field.	ローラは干し草の山のそばにいる小さなひよこを見せ、彼らは緑の庭の列と密生した麦畑を見た。
They ran down the knoll to the low bank of Plum Creek.	彼らはプラム・クリークの低い土手まで丘を駆け下りた。
There was the willow and footbridge, and the water coming out of the plum thicket’s shade, running wide and shallow over sparkling pebbles	柳と歩道橋があり、プラムの茂みの日陰から出てきた水が、きらめく小石の上を広く浅く流れていた。
and gurgling under the bridge to the knee-deep pool.	そして、橋の下で膝の深さの水たまりまでゴボゴボと音を立てていた。

Mary and the big girls came down slowly, bringing Carrie to play with.	メアリーと大きな女の子たちは、キャリーを連れてゆっくりと降りてきた。
But Laura and Christy and Maud and Nellie held their skirts up above their knees and went wading into the cool, flowing water.	しかし、ローラとクリスティとモードとネリーはスカートを膝の上まで持ち上げて、冷たい流れる水の中に入っていった。
Away through the shallows the minnows went swimming in crowds away from the shouts and splashing.	浅瀬を抜けて、小魚たちは叫び声と水しぶきから逃れて群れをなして泳いでいった。

The big girls took Carrie wading where the water sparkled thin in the sunshine, and gathered pretty pebbles along the creek’s edge.	大きな女の子たちは、日差しの中で水が薄くきらめくところへキャリーを連れて行き、小川の端に沿ってきれいな小石を集めた。
The little girls played tag across the footbridge.	小さな女の子たちは歩道橋を渡って鬼ごっこをした。
They ran on the warm grass, and played in the water again.	彼らは暖かい草の上を走り、また水の中で遊んだ。
And while they were playing, Laura suddenly thought of what she could do to Nellie.	そして、遊んでいる間に、ローラは突然、ネリーに何ができるかを考えた。

She led the girls wading near the old crab’s home.	彼女は女の子たちを連れて、年老いたカニの家の近くで水遊びをした。
The noise and splashing had driven him under his rock.	騒ぎと水しぶきで、彼は岩の下に追いやられていた。

The old crab rushed at Nellie’s toes, snapping his claws to nip them.

“Run! Run!” Laura screamed, pushing Christy and Maud back toward the bridge, and then she ran after Nellie.	「逃げて! 逃げて!」ローラは叫び、クリスティとモードを橋に向かって押し戻し、それからネリーを追いかけた。
Nellie ran screaming straight into the muddy water under the plum thicket.	ネリーはそのプラムの茂みの下の泥水の中へ叫びながら真っ直ぐに走っていった。
Laura stopped on the gravel and looked back at the crab’s rock.	ローラは砂利の上で立ち止まり、カニの岩を振り返った。

“Wait, Nellie,” she said.	「待って、ネリー」彼女は言った。
“You stay there.”	「そこにいて。」

“Oh, what was it?	「ああ、何だったの?
What was it? Is he coming?” Nellie asked.	何だったの? 彼は来るの?」ネリーは尋ねた。
She had dropped her dress, and her skirt and petticoats were in the muddy water.	彼女はドレスを落とし、スカートとペチコートは泥水の中にあった。

“It’s an old crab,” Laura told her.	「それは古いカニよ」ローラは彼女に言った。
“He cuts big sticks in two with his claws.	「彼は大きな棒を爪で二つに切るのよ。
He could cut our toes right off.”	彼は私たちの足の指をすぐに切ってしまうかもしれないよ。」

“Oh, where is he?	「ああ、彼はどこにいるの?
Is he coming?” Nellie asked.	彼は来るの?」ネリーは尋ねた。

“You stay there and I’ll look,” said Laura, and she went wading slowly and stopping and looking.	「あなたはそこにいて、私が探すよ」とローラは言い、ゆっくりと歩き、立ち止まって探した。
The old crab was under his rock again, but Laura did not say so.	年老いたカニは再び岩の下にいたが、ローラはそうは言わなかった。
She waded very slowly all the way to the bridge, while Nellie watched from the plum thicket.	彼女は橋までずっとゆっくりと歩き、ネリーはプラムの茂みから見ていた。
Then she waded back and said, “You can come out now.”	それから彼女は歩いて戻り、「もう出てきていいよ」と言った。

Nellie came out into the clean water.	ネリーがきれいな水の中に出てきた。
She said she didn’t like that horrid old creek and wasn’t going to play any more.	彼女は、あの恐ろしい古い小川は嫌いだし、もう遊びには行かないと言った。
She tried to wash her muddy skirt and then she tried to wash her feet, and then she screamed.	彼女は泥だらけのスカートを洗おうとし、それから足を洗おうとして、そして叫んだ。

Muddy-brown bloodsuckers were sticking to her legs and her feet.	泥色のヒルが彼女の足に張り付いていた。
She couldn’t wash them off.	彼女はヒルを洗い流すことができなかった。
She tried to pick one off, and then she ran screaming up on the creek bank.	彼女はヒルを1匹取ろうとしたが、それから叫びながら小川の土手まで走った。
There she stood kicking as hard as she could, first one foot and then the other, screaming all the time.	彼女はそこで立って、最初は片足、次にもう片方の足をできるだけ強く蹴り、ずっと叫び続けていた。

Laura laughed till she fell on the grass and rolled.	ローラは草の上に倒れて転がるまで笑った。
“Oh, look, look!” she shouted, laughing.	「ああ、見て、見て!」と彼女は笑いながら叫んだ。
“See Nellie dance!”	「ネリーが踊っているのを見て!」

All the girls came running.	女の子たちがみんな走ってきた。
Mary told Laura to pick those bloodsuckers off Nellie, but Laura didn’t listen.	メアリーはローラにネリーから吸血虫を取ってやるように言ったが、ローラは聞かなかった。
She kept on rolling and laughing.	彼女は転がり続け、笑い続けた。

“Laura!” Mary said.	「ローラ!」とメアリーは言った。
“You get up and pull those things off, or I’ll tell Ma.”	「起きて、それらを取ってやって。さもないとママに言うよ。」

Then Laura began to pull the bloodsuckers off Nellie.	それからローラはネリーから吸血虫を取り始めた。
All the girls watched and screamed while she pulled them out long, and longer, and longer.	彼女が長く、長く、長く引っ張り出す間、女の子たちはみんな見守り、叫んだ。
Nellie cried: “I don’t like your party!” she said.	ネリーは大声で言った。「あなたのパーティーは嫌い!
“I want to go home!”	「家に帰りたい!」

Ma came hurrying down to the creek to see why they were screaming.	ママはなぜ彼らが叫んでいるのかを見に小川に急いで降りてきた。
She told Nellie not to cry, a few leeches were nothing to cry about.	彼女はネリーに泣かないように言った。ヒル数匹で泣くことはない。
She said it was time now for them all to come to the house.	彼女はみんなが家に来るべき時だ、と言った。

The table was set prettily with Ma’s best white cloth and the blue pitcher full of flowers.	テーブルはママの一番いい白い布と花でいっぱいの青い水差しできれいに整えられていた。
The benches were drawn up on either side of it.	ベンチはその両側に置かれていた。
Shiny tin cups were full of cold, creamy milk from the cellar, and the big platter was heaped with honey-coloured vanity cakes.	ピカピカのブリキのコップには、地下室から出した冷たいクリーム色のミルクがいっぱいで、大きな大皿には蜂蜜色のケーキが山盛りにされていた。

The cakes were not sweet, but they were rich and crisp, and hollow inside.	ケーキは甘くなかったが、濃厚でサクサクしていて、中は空洞だった。
Each one was like a great bubble.	どれも大きな泡のようだった。
The crisp bits of it melted on the tongue.	サクサクした部分が舌の上でとろけた。

They ate and ate of those vanity cakes.	彼らはケーキを食べ続けた。
They said they had never tasted anything so good, and they asked Ma what they were.	彼らはこんなにおいしいものを食べたことがないと言って、ママにそれが何なのか尋ねた。

“Vanity cakes,” said Ma.	「虚栄心のケーキ」とママは言った。
“Because they are all puffed up, like vanity, with nothing solid inside.”	「虚栄心のように、中身が何もなくて膨らんでいるからよ」

There were so many vanity cakes that they ate till they could eat no more, and they drank all the sweet, cold milk they could hold.	虚栄心のケーキはたくさんあったので、彼らは食べられなくなるまで食べ、甘くて冷たいミルクを飲み干した。
Then the party was over.	そして、パーティーは終わった。
All the girls but Nellie said thank you for the party.	ネリー以外の女の子たちはみんなパーティーのお礼を言った。
Nellie was still mad.	ネリーはまだ怒っていた。

Laura did not care.	ローラは気にしなかった。
Christy squeezed her and said in her ear, “I never had such a good time!	クリスティは彼女を抱きしめて、彼女の耳に言った、「私はこんなに楽しい時間を過ごしたことがない!
And it just served Nellie right!”	そして、それはネリーにちょうどいい仕返しになった!」

Deep down inside her Laura felt satisfied when she thought of Nellie dancing on the creek bank.
