Chapter 16: The Wonderful House

第16章: 素晴らしい家

The creek went down.	小川は下がった。
All at once the days were warm, and early every morning Pa went to work the wheat-field with Sam and David, the Christmas horses.	突然日中は暖かくなり、毎朝早くパパはクリスマスの馬、サムとデイビッドと一緒に麦畑に働きに行った。

“I declare,” Ma said, “you’re working that ground to death and killing yourself.”

「断言するよ」とママは言った。「あなたはあの土地を死ぬほど働いて、自分を殺しているよ」

But Pa said the ground was dry because there had not been enough snow.	しかしパパは、雪が十分に降らなかったため、地面が乾燥していると言いました。
He must plough deep and harrow well, and get the wheat sowed quickly.	彼は深く耕して、よく耕して、すぐに小麦を蒔かなければならない。
Every day he was working before the sun came up and he worked till dark.	彼は毎日、日の出前から働き、暗くなるまで働いていた。
Laura waited in the dark till she heard Sam and David splashing into the ford.	ローラは、サムとデイビッドが川を渡る音が聞こえるまで暗闇の中で待った。
Then she ran into the dugout for the lantern and she hurried to the stable to hold it so that Pa could see to do the chores.	それから彼女はランタンを取りに掘っ立て小屋に駆け込み、パパが家事をするのを見ることができるように、急いで馬小屋に駆けつけ、ランタンを持ちました。

He was too tired to laugh or talk.	彼は疲れすぎて笑ったり話したりできなかった。

At last the wheat was sowed.	ついに小麦が蒔かれた。
Then he sowed oats, and he made the potato patch and the garden.	それから彼はオーツ麦を蒔き、ジャガイモ畑と菜園を作った。
Ma and Mary and Laura helped plant the potatoes and sprinkle little seeds in the garden-rows, and they let Carrie think she was helping.	ママとメアリーとローラはジャガイモを植えたり、菜園の畝に小さな種をまいたりするのを手伝い、キャリーにも手伝っていると思わせた。

The whole world was green with grass now;	世界中が草で緑色になっていた。
the yellow-green willow leaves were uncurling.	黄緑色の柳の葉が開き始めていた。
Violets and buttercups were thick in the prairie hollows, and the sorrel’s clover-like leaves and lavender blossoms were sour and good to eat.	スミレやキンポウゲが草原のくぼみに密生し、カタバミのクローバーのような葉やラベンダーの花は酸っぱくて食べやすかった。
Only the wheat-field was bare and brown.	麦畑だけがむき出しで茶色だった。

One evening Pa showed Laura a faint green mist on that brown field.	ある夕方、パパはローラに茶色い畑にかすかな緑の霧を見せた。
The wheat was up!	麦が芽を出していた!
Each tiny sprout was so thin you could hardly see it, but so many of them all together made that misty green.	それぞれの小さな芽はとても細くてほとんど見えなかったが、それらが全部集まって霧のような緑色になっていた。
Everyone was happy that night because the wheat was a good stand.	その夜は麦がよく育っていたのでみんなが幸せだった。

The next day Pa drove to town.	次の日、パパは町まで馬車を走らせた。
Sam and David could go to town and come back in one afternoon.	サムとデイビッドなら町に行って午後のうちに戻って来れた。
There was hardly time to miss Pa, and they were not even watching for him when he came home.	パパがいなくて寂しいと思う時間はほとんどなく、パパが帰宅した時も誰も彼を待っていなかった。
Laura heard the wagon first, and she was the first one up the path.	ローラは最初に馬車の音を聞き、道を最初に駆け上がった。

Pa was sitting on the wagon seat.	パパは馬車の座席に座っていた。
His face was one big shining of joy, and lumber was piled high in the wagon box behind him.	彼の顔は喜びで輝き、彼の後ろの馬車の荷台には材木が高く積み上げられていた。
He sang out, “Here’s your new house, Caroline!”	彼は「これが君の新しい家だよ、キャロライン!」と歌うように言った。

“But, Charles!” Ma gasped.	「でも、チャールズ!」ママは息を呑んだ。
Laura ran and climbed up over the wheel, up onto that pile of boards.	ローラは走って車輪を乗り越え、板の山に登った。
She had never seen such smooth, straight, beautiful boards.	彼女はこんな滑らかで真っ直ぐで美しい板を見たことがなかった。
They had been sawed by machinery.	それらは機械で挽かれたものだった。

“But the wheat’s hardly up yet!” Ma said.

「でも、小麦はまだほとんど育っていないよ!」ママは言った。

“That’s all right,” Pa told her.	「大丈夫だ」パパは彼女に言った。
“They let me have the lumber, and we’ll pay for it when we sell the wheat.”	「彼らは私に木材を貸してくれるんだ、そして小麦を売ったときに支払う」

Laura asked him, “Are we going to have a house made of boards?”

ローラは彼に尋ねた、「私たちは板でできた家を持つの?」

“Yes, flutterbudget,” said Pa.	「そうだ、お転婆娘」パパは言った。
“We’re going to have a whole house built of sawed lumber.	「私たちは丸太を製材した木材で家を建てるんだ。
And it’s going to have glass windows!”	そしてガラス窓があるんだ!」

It was really true.	それは本当に本当だった。
Next morning Mr. Nelson came to help Pa, and they began digging the cellar for that house.	次の朝、ネルソンさんがパパを手伝いに来て、彼らはその家のための地下室を掘り始めた。
They were going to have that wonderful house, just because the wheat was growing.	彼らは小麦が育ったというだけで、あの素晴らしい家を持つことになるのだ。

Laura and Mary could hardly stay in the dugout long enough to do their work.	ローラとメアリーは、仕事をするのに十分な時間、掘っ立て小屋に居続けることがほとんどできなかった。

They ran down the steps and over the footbridge, and under the willows, up to the prairie.	彼女たちは階段を駆け下り、歩道橋を渡り、柳の下をくぐり、大草原まで駆け上がった。
They went through the prairie grasses and up to the top of a green knoll, where Pa and Mr. Nelson were building the new house.	彼女たちは大草原の草の中を通り抜け、パパとネルソンさんが新しい家を建てている緑の丘の頂上まで登った。

It was fun to watch them set up the skeleton house.	彼らが家の骨組みを立てるのを見るのは楽しかった。
The timbers stood up slender and golden-new, and the sky was very blue between them.	木材は細く、金色に輝き、その間の空はとても青かった。
The hammers made a gay sound.	ハンマーは陽気な音を立てた。
The planes cut long curly shavings from the sweet-smelling boards.	カンナは甘い香りのする板から長くカールした削りくずを切り取った。

Laura and Mary hung little shavings over their ears for earrings.	ローラとメアリーは小さな削りくずを耳にかけてイヤリングにした。
They put them around their necks for necklaces.	彼女たちはそれを首にかけてネックレスにした。
Laura tucked long ones in her hair and they hung down in golden curls, just the colour she had always wanted her hair to be.	ローラは長い削りくずを髪に挟み、それは金色のカールになって垂れ下がった。それは彼女がいつも自分の髪にしたいと思っていた色だった。

Up on the skeleton roof Pa and Mr. Nelson hammered and sawed.	屋根の骨組みの上でパパとネルソンさんは槌を打ち、のこぎりで切った。
Little blocks of wood fell down, and Laura and Mary gathered them in piles and built houses of their own.	小さな木のブロックが落ちてきて、ローラとメアリーはそれを山に集めて自分たちの家を建てた。
They had never had such a good time.	彼女たちはこんなに楽しい時間を過ごしたことがなかった。

Pa and Mr. Nelson covered the skeleton walls with slanting boards nailed on.	パパとネルソンさんは骨組みの壁を斜めの板を打ち付けて覆った。
They shingled the roof with boughten shingles.	彼らは屋根を買った屋根板で覆った。
Boughten shingles were thin and all the same size;	買った屋根板は薄くて全部同じ大きさだった。
they were far finer shingles than even Pa could hew with an ax.	それはパパが斧で削った屋根板よりもずっと立派だった。
They made an even, tight roof, with not one crack in it.	彼らは平らで隙間のない屋根を作った。

Then Pa laid the floor of silky-smooth boards that were grooved along the edges and fitted together perfectly.	それからパパは、端に溝が掘ってあってぴったりと合う、絹のように滑らかな板で床を張った。
Overhead he laid another floor for the upstairs, and that made the ceiling of the downstairs.	頭上には二階の床を張り、それが一階の天井になった。

Across the downstairs, Pa put up a partition.	パパは一階に仕切りを立てた。
That house was going to have two rooms!	その家には2つの部屋ができる予定だった。
One was the bedroom, and the other was only to live in.	1つは寝室で、もう1つは居間だけだった。
He put two shining-clear glass windows in that room;	彼はその部屋に2つの輝く透明なガラス窓を設置した。
one looking toward the sunrise	1つは日の出の方を向いていた。
and the other beside the doorway to the south.	もう1つは南側の出入り口の横にあった。
In the bedroom walls he set two more windows, and they were glass windows, too.	彼は寝室の壁にさらに2つの窓を設置し、それらもガラス窓だった。

Laura had never seen such wonderful windows.	ローラはそのような素晴らしい窓を見たことがなかった。
They were in halves.	窓は半分ずつだった。
There were six panes of glass in each half, and the bottom half would push up, and stay up when a stick was set under it.	それぞれの半分に6枚のガラスがあり、下の半分は押し上げることができ、その下に棒を置くと上がったままになった。

Opposite the front door Pa put a back door, and outside it he built a tiny room.	パパは玄関の反対側に裏口を設置し、その外に小さな部屋を作った。
That was a lean-to, because it leaned against the house.	それは家に寄りかかっていたので、片流れ屋根だった。
It would keep out the north winds in the winter-time, and it was a place where Ma could keep her broom and mop and washtub.	冬には北風を防ぎ、ママがほうきやモップ、洗濯桶を置いておく場所だった。

Now Mr. Nelson was not there and Laura asked questions all the time.	今はネルソンさんがいなかったので、ローラはいつも質問していた。
Pa said the bedroom was for Ma and Carrie and him.	パパは寝室はママとキャリーとパパ用だと言った。
He said the attic was for Mary and Laura, to sleep in and to play in.	屋根裏部屋はメアリーとローラが寝たり遊んだりするためのものだと言った。
Laura wanted so much to see it that he stopped work on the lean-to and nailed strips of board up the wall, to make the attic ladder.	ローラはそれを見たくてたまらなかったので、パパは小屋の仕事を中断して、屋根裏部屋のはしごを作るために壁に板を打ち付けた。

Laura skipped quickly up that ladder till her head came up through the hole in the attic floor.	ローラは屋根裏部屋の床の穴から頭が出るまで、そのはしごを素早く上っていった。
The attic was as big as both rooms downstairs.	屋根裏部屋は階下の2つの部屋を合わせたくらいの大きさだった。
Its floor was smooth boards.	床は滑らかな板張りだった。
Its slanting roof was the underside of the fresh, yellow shingles.	傾斜した屋根は、新鮮な黄色い屋根板の裏側だった。
There was a little window at each end of that attic, and those windows were glass windows!	屋根裏部屋の両端には小さな窓があり、その窓はガラス窓だった!

At first Mary was scared to swing off the ladder to the attic floor.	最初、メアリーは屋根裏部屋の床に梯子を降ろすのが怖かった。
Then she was scared to step down through the floor-hole onto the ladder.	それから、彼女は床の穴から梯子に降りるのが怖かった。
Laura felt scared, too, but she pretended she didn’t.	ローラも怖かったが、怖くないふりをした。
And they soon got used to getting on and off the ladder.	そして、彼女たちはすぐに梯子の乗り降りに慣れた。

Now they thought the house was done.	これで家は完成したと思った。
But Pa nailed black tar-paper all over the outside of the house walls.	しかし、パパは家の壁の外側全体に黒いタール紙を釘で打ち付けた。
Then he nailed more boards over that paper.	それから、その紙の上にさらに板を釘で打ち付けた。
They were long, smooth boards, one lapping over the other all up the sides of the house.	それは長く滑らかな板で、家の側面全体に重なり合っていた。
Then around the windows and the doorways Pa nailed flat frames.	それから、パパは窓や出入り口の周りに平らな枠を釘で打ち付けた。

“This house is tight as a drum!” he said.	「この家はドラムのように頑丈だ!」と彼は言った。
There was not one single crack in the roof or the walls or the floor of that house, to let in rain or cold winds.	その家の屋根や壁や床には、雨や冷たい風が入ってくる隙間が一つもなかった。

Then Pa put in the doors, and they were boughten doors.	それからパパはドアを取り付けたが、それは買ってきたドアだった。
They were smooth, and far thinner than slab doors hewed with an ax, and even thinner panels were set into them above and below their middles.	それは滑らかで、斧で削った厚板のドアよりもずっと薄く、さらに薄いパネルが真ん中の上下にはめ込まれていた。
Their hinges were boughten hinges, and it was marvellous to see them open and shut.	蝶番も買ってきたもので、開け閉めする様子はすばらしかった。
They did not rattle like wooden hinges or let the door drag like leather hinges.	木製の蝶番のようにガタガタすることも、革製の蝶番のようにドアが引きずられることもなかった。

Into those doors Pa set boughten locks, with keys that went into small, shaped holes, and turned and clicked.	パパはそのドアに買ってきた錠前を取り付けたが、鍵は小さな穴に差し込んで回すとカチッと音がした。
These locks had white china door knobs.	その錠前には白い陶器のドアノブがついていた。

Then one day Pa said, “Laura and Mary, can you keep a secret?”

そしてある日、パパが「ローラとメアリー、秘密を守れるか?」と言った。

“Oh yes, Pa!” they said.

「もちろん、パパ!」と二人は言った。

“Promise you won’t tell Ma?” he asked, and they promised.

「ママには言わないと約束できるか?」とパパが尋ねると、二人は約束した。

He opened the lean-to door.	パパは小屋のドアを開けた。
And there stood a shiny-black cookstove.	するとそこにはピカピカの黒い調理用ストーブが立っていた。
Pa had brought it from town and hidden it there, to surprise Ma.	パパはママを驚かせるために町からそれを運んでそこに隠していたのだ。

On top, that cookstove had four round holes and four round lids fitted them.	その調理用ストーブの天板には四つの丸い穴があり、四つの丸い蓋がはまっていた。
Each lid had a grooved hole in it, and there was an iron handle that fitted into the holes, to lift the lid by.	それぞれの蓋には溝のついた穴があり、蓋を持ち上げるために穴に差し込む鉄の取っ手があった。
In front, there was a long, low door.	前には長くて低い扉があった。
There were slits in this door, and a piece of iron would slide back and forth, to close these slits or open them!	この扉にはスリットがあり、鉄の板が前後にスライドしてスリットを閉じたり開けたりできるのだ!
That was the draught.	それが通風口だった。
Under it, a shelf like an oblong pan stuck out.	その下には、長方形の鍋のような棚が突き出ていた。
That was to catch ashes and keep them from dropping on the floor.	それは灰を受け止めて床に落ちないようにするためのものだった。
A lid swung flat over this hollowed-out shelf.	このくり抜かれた棚の上に蓋が平らに揺れていた。
And on the lid were raised iron letters in rows.	そして蓋には鉄の文字が列をなして浮き出ていた。

Mary put her finger on the bottom row and spelled out, “P A T. One seven seven ought.”	メアリーは一番下の列に指を置いて、「P A T. 1770」とつづった。
She asked Pa, “What’s that spell, Pa?”	彼女はパパに「これは何て読むの、パパ?」と尋ねた。

“It spells Pat,” Pa said.

「パットって読むんだ」とパパは言った。

Laura opened a big door on the side of the stove, and looked into a big square place with a shelf across it.	ローラはストーブの横にある大きな扉を開け、棚が渡してある大きな四角い場所を覗き込んだ。
“Oh Pa, what’s this for?” she asked him.	「パパ、これは何に使うの?」と彼女は尋ねた。

“It’s the oven,” Pa told her.

「それはオーブンだよ」とパパは彼女に言った。

He lifted that marvellous stove and set it in the living-room, and put up the stovepipe.	彼はその素晴らしいストーブを持ち上げて居間に置き、煙突を立てた。
Piece by piece, the stovepipe went up through the ceiling and the attic and through a hole he sawed in the roof.	煙突は少しずつ天井と屋根裏を通り抜け、屋根に開けた穴を通って上へ伸びていった。
Then Pa climbed onto the roof and he set a larger tin pipe over the stovepipe.	それからパパは屋根に登り、煙突の上にもっと大きなブリキの煙突を設置した。
The tin pipe had a spread-out, flat bottom that covered the hole in the roof.	ブリキの煙突は広がった平らな底を持っていて、屋根の穴を覆った。
Not a drop of rain could run down the stovepipe into the new house.	雨粒一つとして煙突を伝って新しい家に入ることはできなかった。

That was a prairie chimney.

それが草原の煙突だった。

“Well, it’s done,” Pa said.	「さて、できた」とパパは言った。
“Even to a prairie chimney.”	「草原の煙突にさえ。」

There was nothing more that a house could possibly have.	家が持ちうるものは他に何もなかった。
The glass windows made the inside of that house so light that you would hardly know you were in a house.	ガラス窓はその家の中をとても明るくしたので、家の中にいることがほとんどわからないほどだった。
It smelled clean and piny, from the yellow-new board walls and floor.	黄色い新しい板の壁と床から、きれいで松の香りがした。
The cookstove stood lordly in the corner by the lean-to door.	調理用ストーブは、傾斜したドアのそばの角に堂々と立っていた。
A touch on the white-china door knob swung the boughten door on its boughten hinges, and the door knob’s little iron tongue clicked and held the door shut.	白い陶器のドアノブに触れると、買ったドアが買った蝶番で揺れ、ドアノブの小さな鉄の舌がカチッと音を立ててドアを閉めた。

“We’ll move in, tomorrow morning,” Pa said.	「明日の朝引っ越すよ」とパパは言った。
“This is the last night we’ll sleep in a dugout.”	「掘っ立て小屋で寝るのは今夜が最後だ」

Laura and Mary took his hands and they went down the knoll.	ローラとメアリーはパパの手を取って、丘を下りた。
The wheat-field was a silky, shimmery green rippling over a curve of the prairie.	麦畑は絹のようなきらめく緑で、大草原の曲線に波打っていた。
Its sides were straight and its corners square, and all around it the wild prairie grasses looked coarser and darker green.	麦畑の側面はまっすぐで角は直角で、その周りの大草原の野草はもっと粗く、もっと濃い緑に見えた。
Laura looked back at the wonderful house.	ローラは素晴らしい家を振り返った。
In the sunshine on the knoll, its sawed-lumber walls and roof were as golden as a straw-stack.	丘の上の陽光の中で、その挽き材の壁と屋根は麦わらの山のように黄金色だった。
