第8章: 麦わらの山

When Mr. Nelson’s harvesting was done, Pa had paid for Spot.	ネルソンさんの収穫が終わると、パパはスポットの代金を支払った。
He could do his own harvesting now.	パパは、もう自分の収穫をすることができる。
He sharpened the long, dangerous scythe that little girls must never touch, and he cut down the wheat in the small field beyond the stable.	パパは、小さな女の子が絶対に触れてはいけない長くて危険な大鎌を研ぎ、馬小屋の向こうにある小さな畑の小麦を刈り取った。
He bound it in bundles and stacked them.	パパはそれを束ねて積み上げた。

Then every morning he went to work on the level land across the creek.	それから、パパは毎朝、小川を渡った平地で働きに行った。
He cut the prairie grass and left it to dry in the sunshine.	パパは草原の草を刈り、日光で乾かすために放置した。
He raked it into piles with a wooden rake.	パパはそれを木製の熊手でかき集めて山にした。
He yoked Pete and Bright to the wagon, and hauled the hay and made six big stacks of it over there.	パパはピートとブライトを荷車につなぎ、干し草を運び、あそこに6つの大きな山を作った。

At night he was always too tired, now, to play the fiddle.	夜になると、パパはいつも疲れすぎてバイオリンを弾けなかった。
But he was glad because when the hay was stacked he could plough that stubble land, and that would be the wheat-field.	しかし、干し草が積み上げられると、パパはその刈り株の土地を耕すことができ、それが小麦畑になるため、パパは喜んでいた。

One morning at daylight three strange men came with a threshing-machine.	ある朝、夜明けに3人の見知らぬ男が脱穀機を持ってやってきた。
They threshed Pa’s stack of wheat.	彼らはパパの小麦の山を脱穀した。
Laura heard the harsh machinery noises while she drove Spot through the dewy grass, and when the sun rose chaff flew golden in the wind.	ローラは、露に濡れた草の中をスポットを連れて行く間、機械の耳障りな音を聞き、太陽が昇ると、もみがらが金色に輝いて風に舞った。

The threshing was done and the men went away with the machine before breakfast.	脱穀は終わり、男たちは朝食前に機械を持って帰っていった。
Pa said he wished Hanson had sown more wheat.	パパはハンソンがもっと小麦を蒔いていればよかったのにと言った。

“But there’s enough to make us some flour,” he said.	「でも、小麦粉を作るには十分だ」と彼は言った。
“And the straw, with what hay I’ve cut, will feed the stock through the winter.	「そして、麦わらは、私が刈った干し草と一緒に、冬の間家畜の餌になる。
Next year,” he said, “we’ll have a crop of wheat that will amount to something!”	来年は、かなりの小麦が収穫できるだろう」と彼は言った。

When Laura and Mary went up on the prairie to play, that morning, the first thing they saw was a beautiful golden straw-stack.

その朝、ローラとメアリーが遊びに草原に上がったとき、最初に目についたのは美しい黄金の麦わらの山だった。

It was tall and shining bright in the sunshine.	それは高く、日差しの中で明るく輝いていた。
It smelled sweeter than hay.	干し草よりも甘い香りがした。

Laura’s feet slid in the sliding, slippery straw, but she could climb faster than straw slid.	ローラの足は滑りやすく滑りやすい麦わらの中で滑ったが、彼女は麦わらが滑るよりも速く登ることができた。
In a minute she was high on top of that stack.	すぐに彼女はその山の頂上にいた。

She looked across the willow tops and away beyond the creek at the far land.	彼女は柳のてっぺんを越えて、小川の向こうの遠くの土地を見た。
She could see the whole, great, round prairie.	彼女は丸い大草原全体を見ることができた。
She was high up in the sky, almost as high as birds.	彼女は空高く、ほとんど鳥と同じくらい高いところにいるように感じた。
Her arms waved and her feet bounced on the springy straw.	彼女の腕は揺れ、足は弾力のあるわらの上で跳ねた。
She was almost flying, ‘way high up in the windy sky.	彼女はほとんど飛んでいるように感じた、風の強い空のずっと高いところにいるように。

“I’m flying! I’m flying!” she called down to Mary.	「飛んでる! 飛んでる!」と彼女はメアリーに叫んだ。
Mary climbed up to her.	メアリーは彼女のところに登った。

“Jump! Jump!” Laura said.	「ジャンプ! ジャンプ!」ローラは言った。
They held hands and jumped, round and round, higher and higher.	彼女たちは手をつなぎ、ぐるぐると、より高くジャンプした。
The wind blew and their skirts flapped and their sunbonnets swung at the ends of the sunbonnet strings around their necks.	風が吹き、彼女たちのスカートははためき、日よけ帽は首の周りの日よけ帽の紐の端で揺れた。

“Higher! Higher!” Laura sang, jumping.	「もっと高く! もっと高く!」ローラはジャンプしながら歌った。
Suddenly the straw slid under her.	突然、わらが彼女の下で滑った。
Over the edge of the stack she went, sitting in straw, sliding faster and faster.	彼女はわらの山の端を越え、わらに座り、ますます速く滑っていった。
Bump! She landed at the bottom.	ドスン! 彼女は底に着地した。
Plump! Mary landed on her.	ドスン! メアリーは彼女の上に着地した。

They rolled and laughed in the crackling straw.	彼女たちはパチパチと音を立てるわらの中で転がり、笑った。
Then they climbed the stack, and slid down it again.	それから彼女たちはわらの山に登り、また滑り降りた。
They had never had so much fun.	彼女たちはこんなに楽しいことはなかった。

They climbed up and slid, climbed and slid, until there was hardly any stack left in the middle of loose heaps of straw.

彼女たちは登っては滑り、登っては滑り、わらの山の真ん中にほとんど山が残らなくなるまで続けた。

Then they were sober.	その時彼女たちは落ち着いた。
Pa had made that straw-stack and now it was not at all as he had left it.	パパが作ったわらの山は、今では彼が残したままの状態ではなかった。
Laura looked at Mary and Mary looked at her, and they looked at what was left of that straw-stack.	ローラはメアリーを、メアリーはローラを見て、そして彼女たちはわらの山の残骸を見た。
Then Mary said she was going into the dugout, and Laura went quietly with her.	それからメアリーは掘っ立て小屋に入ると言い、ローラは静かに彼女と一緒に行った。
They were very good, helping Ma and playing nicely with Carrie, until Pa came to dinner.	彼女たちはパパが夕食に来るまで、ママを手伝ったり、キャリーと仲良く遊んだりして、とても行儀が良かった。

When he came in he looked straight at Laura, and Laura looked at the floor.

彼は入ってくるとローラをまっすぐ見、ローラは床を見た。

“You girls mustn’t slide down the straw-stack any more,” Pa said.	「あなたたちはもうわらの山を滑り降りてはいけない」とパパは言った。
“I had to stop and pitch up all that loose straw.”	「私は立ち止まって、あのゆるんだわらを全部投げ上げなければならなかった。」

“We won’t, Pa,” Laura said, earnestly, and Mary said, “No, Pa, we won’t.”

「もうしません、パパ」とローラは真剣に言い、メアリーは「しません、パパ」と言った。

After dinner Mary washed the dishes and Laura dried them.	夕食後、メアリーは皿を洗い、ローラはそれを拭いた。
Then they put on their sunbonnets and went up the path to the prairie.	それから、日よけ帽子をかぶって、草原への小道を上っていった。
The straw-stack was golden-bright in the sunshine.	麦わらの山は日差しの中で黄金色に輝いていた。

“Laura! What are you doing!”	「ローラ! 何してるの!」
said Mary.	とメアリーは言った。

“I’m not doing anything!” said Laura.	「何もしてないよ!」とローラは言った。
“I’m not even hardly touching it!”	「ほとんど触れてもいないよ!」

“You come right away from there, or I’ll tell Ma!” said Mary.

「すぐにそこから離れなさい、さもないとママに言うよ!」とメアリーは言った。

“Pa didn’t say I couldn’t smell it,” said Laura.

「パパは匂いを嗅いではいけないとは言わなかったよ」とローラは言った。

She stood close to the golden stack and sniffed long, deep sniffs.	彼女は黄金の山の近くに立って、長く深く匂いを嗅いだ。
The straw was warmed by the sun.	麦わらは太陽で暖められていた。
It smelled better than wheat kernels taste when you chew them.	麦粒を噛んだときの味よりもいい匂いがした。
Laura burrowed her face in it, shutting her eyes and smelling deeper and deeper.	ローラは顔をそこに埋め、目を閉じて、より深く匂いを嗅いだ。

“Mmm!” she said.

「うーん!」と彼女は言った。

Mary came and smelled it and said, “Mmm!”

メアリーは来て、匂いを嗅いで、「うーん!」と言った。

Laura looked up the glistening, prickly, golden stack.	ローラはきらめく、とげとげした、黄金の山を見上げた。
She had never seen the sky so blue as it was above that gold.	彼女は空がその黄金の上に広がる青い空を見たことがなかった。
She could not stay on the ground.	彼女は地面にとどまることができなかった。
She had to be high up in that blue sky.	彼女はその青い空に高く上がらなければならなかった。

“Laura!” Mary cried.	「ローラ!」とメアリーは叫んだ。
“Pa said we mustn’t!”	「パパはいけないって言ったよ!」

Laura was climbing.	ローラは登っていた。
“He did not, either!” she contradicted.	「そんなこと言ってないよ!」と彼女は反論した。
“He did not say we must not climb up it.	「登っちゃいけないなんて言ってないよ。
He said we must not slide down it.	滑り降りちゃいけないって言ったのよ。
I’m only climbing.”	私は登っているだけよ。」

“You come right straight down from there,” said Mary.

「すぐに降りてきて」とメアリーは言った。

Laura was on top of the stack.	ローラは積み重ねた一番上にいた。
She looked down at Mary and said, like a very good little girl, “I am not going to slide down. Pa said not to.”	彼女はメアリーを見下ろして、とても良い子のように言った。「滑り降りるつもりはないよ。パパがそうしちゃいけないって言ったのよ。」

Nothing but the blue sky was higher than she was.	青い空以外に彼女より高いものはなかった。
The wind was blowing.	風が吹いていた。
The green prairie was wide and far.	緑の草原は広く、遠くまで広がっていた。
Laura spread her arms and jumped, and the straw bounded her high.	ローラは腕を広げてジャンプし、藁が彼女を高く跳ね上げた。

“I’m flying! I’m flying!” she sang.	「私は飛んでいる! 私は飛んでいる!」と彼女は歌った。
Mary climbed up, and Mary began to fly, too.	メアリーも登り、メアリーも飛び始めた。

They bounced until they could bounce no higher.	彼女たちはこれ以上高く跳ね上がれないまで跳ね上がった。
Then they flopped flat on the sweet warm straw.	それから彼女たちは甘く暖かい藁の上に平らに落ちた。
Bulges of straw rose up on both sides of Laura.	藁の膨らみがローラの両側に立ち上がった。
She rolled onto a bulge and it sank, but another rose up.	彼女は膨らみの上に転がり、それは沈んだが、別の膨らみが立ち上がった。
She rolled onto that bulge, and then she was rolling faster and faster;	彼女はその膨らみの上に転がり、それから彼女はますます速く転がっていた。
she could not stop.	彼女は止まることができなかった。

“Laura!” Mary screamed.	「ローラ!」メアリーは叫んだ。
“Pa said—”	「パパは言った」
But Laura was rolling.	しかし、ローラは転がっていた。
Over, over, over, right down that straw-stack she rolled and thumped in straw on the ground.	彼女は転がり、地面の藁にドスンと落ちた。

She jumped up and climbed that straw-stack again as fast as she could.	彼女は飛び起きて、できるだけ早くその藁の山に登った。
She flopped and began to roll again.	彼女はバタンと倒れ、また転がり始めた。
“Come on, Mary!” she shouted.	「おいで、メアリー!」彼女は叫んだ。
“Pa didn’t say we can’t roll!”	「パパは転がってはいけないとは言わなかった!」

Mary stayed on top of the stack and argued.	メアリーは山の上に留まり、言い争った。
“I know Pa didn’t say we can’t roll, but——”	「パパが転がってはいけないとは言わなかったことは知っているけれど、でも——」

“Well, then!” Laura rolled down again.	「じゃあ、いいよ!」ローラは再び転がり落ちた。
“Come on!” she called up.	「おいでよ!」彼女は呼びかけた。
“It’s lots of fun!”	「とても楽しいよ!」

“Well, but I—” said Mary.	「でも、私は——」メアリーは言った。
Then she came rolling down.	それから彼女は転がり落ちてきた。

It was great fun.	それはとても楽しかった。
It was more fun than sliding.	それは滑り台よりも楽しかった。
They climbed and rolled and climbed and rolled, laughing harder all the time.	彼女たちは登っては転がり、登っては転がり、ずっと大笑いしていた。
More and more straw rolled down with them.	ますます多くのわらが彼女たちと一緒に転がり落ちてきた。
They waded in it and rolled each other in it and climbed and rolled down again, till there was hardly anything left to climb.	彼女たちはその中を歩き回り、お互いに転がり、登ってはまた転がり落ち、登るものがほとんどなくなるまでそうしていた。

Then they brushed every bit of straw off their dresses, they picked every bit out of their hair, and they went quietly into the dugout.

それから彼女たちは服からわらを払い落とし、髪の毛からわらを抜き取り、静かに掘っ立て小屋の中に入っていった。

When Pa came from the hay-field that night, Mary was busily setting the table for supper.	その夜、パパが干し草畑から帰ってきたとき、メアリーは忙しそうに夕食のテーブルを整えていた。
Laura was behind the door, busy with the box of paper dolls.	ローラはドアの後ろで、紙人形の箱で忙しかった。

“Laura,” Pa said, dreadfully, “come here.”

「ローラ」パパは恐ろしい声で言った、「こっちに来なさい」

Slowly Laura went out from behind the door.

ローラはゆっくりとドアの後ろから出てきた。

“Come here,” said Pa, “right over here by Mary.”

「こっちに来なさい」パパは言った、「メアリーのすぐそばに」

He sat down and he stood them before him, side by side.	彼は座り、二人を並んで自分の前に立たせた。
But it was Laura he looked at.	しかし、彼が見たのはローラだった。

He said, sternly, “You girls have been sliding down the straw-stack again.”

彼は厳しく言った、「あなたたち、また藁の山を滑り降りていたな」

“No, Pa,” said Laura.

「いいえ、パパ」ローラは言った。

“Mary!” said Pa.	「メアリー!」パパは言った。
“Did you slide down the straw-stack?”	「藁の山を滑り降りたの?」

“N-no, Pa,” Mary said.

「い、いいえ、パパ」メアリーは言った。

“Laura!” Pa’s voice was terrible.	「ローラ!」パパの声は恐ろしかった。
“Tell me again, did you slide down the straw-stack?”	「もう一度聞くけど、藁の山を滑り降りたの?」

“No, Pa,” Laura answered again.	「いいえ、パパ」ローラは再び答えた。
She looked straight into Pa’s shocked eyes.	彼女はパパのショックを受けた目をまっすぐ見つめた。
She did not know why he looked like that.	彼女はなぜ彼がそんな顔をしているのか分からなかった。

“Laura!” Pa said.

「ローラ!」パパは言った。

“We did not slide, Pa,” Laura explained.	「滑り落ちたんじゃないのよ、パパ」ローラは説明した。
“But we did roll down it.”	「でも、転がり落ちたのよ」

Pa got up quickly and went to the door and stood looking out.	パパは素早く立ち上がり、ドアのところまで行って、外を眺めた。
His back quivered.	彼の背中が震えた。
Laura and Mary did not know what to think.	ローラとメアリーは、どう考えたらいいかわからなかった。

When Pa turned around, his face was stern but his eyes were twinkling.

パパが振り返ったとき、彼の顔は厳しかったが、目はきらめいていた。

“All right, Laura,” he said.	「わかった、ローラ」と彼は言った。
“But now I want you girls to stay away from that straw-stack.	「でも、これからはあの麦わらの山に近づかないように。
Pete and Bright and Spot will have nothing but hay and straw to eat this winter.	ピートとブライトとスポットは、この冬は干し草と麦わらしか食べるものがない。
They need every bite of it.	彼らには一口一口が必要だ。
You don’t want them to be hungry, do you?”	彼らに空腹になってほしくないだろう?」

“Oh no, Pa!” they said.

「ああ、パパ!」と彼女たちは言った。

“Well, if that straw’s to be fit to feed them, it must—stay—stacked.	「あの麦わらを彼らに食べさせるには、積み上げておく必要がある。
Do you understand?”	分かったか?」

“Yes, Pa,” said Laura and Mary.

「はい、パパ」とローラとメアリーは言った。

That was the end of their playing on the straw-stack.

これで麦わらの山で遊ぶのは終わりとなった。
