第5章: 奇妙な動物

All the next day Laura remembered.	ローラは翌日ずっと覚えていた。
She remembered the cool, deep water in the shade of the tall willows.	彼女は背の高い柳の木陰にある冷たくて深い水を思い出した。
She remembered that she must not go near it.	彼女はそこへ近づいてはいけないことを思い出した。

Pa was away.	パパはいなかった。
Mary stayed with Ma in the dugout.	メアリーはママと一緒に掘っ立て小屋に残った。
Laura played all alone in the hot sunshine.	ローラは暑い日差しの中で一人で遊んだ。
The blue flags were withering among the dull rushes.	青いアヤメはくすんだイグサの中でしおれていた。
She went past the willow valley and played in the prairie grasses among the black-eyed Susans and goldenrod.	彼女は柳の谷を通り過ぎ、黒い目のスーザンと黄金色の草原の草の中で遊んだ。
The sunshine was very hot and the wind was scorching.	日差しはとても暑く、風は焼けるようだった。

Then Laura thought of the tableland.	その時、ローラは台地のことを思い出した。
She wanted to climb it again.	彼女はまた登りたいと思った。
She wondered if she could climb it all by herself.	彼女は一人で登れるかどうか考えた。
Pa had not said that she could not go to the tableland.	パパは台地に行ってはいけないとは言わなかった。

She ran down the steep bank and went across the lowland, through the tall, coarse grasses.	彼女は急な土手を駆け下り、背の高い粗い草の中を低地を横切って行った。
The tableland stood up straight and high.	台地はまっすぐ高くそびえていた。
It was very hard to climb.	登るのはとても大変だった。
The dry earth slid under Laura’s feet, her dress was dirty where her knees dug in while she held onto the grasses and pulled herself up.	乾いた土がローラの足の下で滑り、草をつかんで自分を引き上げている間に膝を突っ込んだところでドレスが汚れた。
Dust itched on her sweaty skin.	ほこりが彼女の汗ばんだ肌をくすぐった。
But at last she got her stomach on the edge;	しかし、ついに彼女は腹を端に乗せた。
she heaved and rolled and she was on top of the tableland.	彼女は息を切らして転がり、台地の頂上にいた。

She jumped up, and she could see the deep, shady pool under the willows.	彼女は飛び起き、柳の下の深い日陰の池を見ることができた。
It was cool and wet, and her whole skin felt thirsty.	涼しく湿っていて、彼女の肌全体がのどが渇いたように感じた。
But she remembered that she must not go there.	しかし、彼女はそこに行ってはいけないことを思い出した。

The tableland seemed big and empty and not interesting.	台地は大きくて空っぽで面白くなさそうだった。
It had been exciting when Pa was there, but now it was just flat land, and Laura thought she would go home and get a drink.	パパがそこにいたときは刺激的だったが、今はただの平地で、ローラは家に帰って飲み物を飲もうと思った。
She was very thirsty.	彼女はとてものどが渇いていた。

She slid down the side of the tableland and slowly started back along the way she had come.	彼女は台地の側面を滑り降り、ゆっくりと来た道を戻り始めた。
Down among the tall grasses the air was smothery and very hot.	背の高い草の間では空気が息苦しく、とても暑かった。
The dugout was far away and Laura was terribly thirsty.	掘っ立て小屋は遠く、ローラはひどく喉が渇いていた。

She remembered with all her might that she must not go near that deep, shady swimming-pool, and suddenly she turned around and hurried toward it.	彼女はあの深い日陰の水たまりの近くに行ってはいけないと全力で思い出し、突然向きを変えてそこへ急いだ。
She thought she would only look at it.	彼女はただそれを見るだけだと思った。
Just looking at it would make her feel better.	それを見ただけで気分が良くなるだろう。
Then she thought she might wade in the edge of it but she would not go into the deep water.	それから彼女は水たまりの端で水遊びをしようと思ったが、深い水には入らないつもりだった。

She came into the path that Pa had made, and she trotted faster.

彼女はパパが作った小道に入り、もっと速く走った。

Right in the middle of the path before her stood an animal.

彼女の前の小道の真ん中に動物が立っていた。

Laura jumped back, and stood and stared at it.	ローラは後ろに飛び退き、立ってそれを見つめた。
She had never seen such an animal.	彼女はそのような動物を見たことがなかった。
It was almost as long as Jack, but its legs were very short.	それはジャックとほぼ同じ長さだったが、足がとても短かった。
Long grey fur bristled all over it.	長い灰色の毛が全身に生えていた。
It had a flat head and small ears.	頭は平らで耳は小さかった。
Its flat head slowly tilted up and it stared at Laura.	その平らな頭はゆっくりと上を向き、ローラを見つめた。

She stared back at its funny face.	彼女はそのおかしな顔をじっと見つめ返した。
And while they stood still and staring, that animal widened and shortened and spread flat on the ground.	そして、彼らがじっと立って見つめている間に、その動物は広がり、短くなり、地面に平らに広がった。
It grew flatter and flatter, till it was a grey fur laid there.	それはますます平らになり、そこに灰色の毛皮が敷かれるまでになった。
It was not like a whole animal at all.	それはまるで動物全体のようでは全くなかった。
Only it had eyes staring up.	ただ、上を見つめる目があっただけだった。

Slowly and carefully Laura stooped and reached and picked up a willow stick.	ゆっくりと慎重にローラはかがみ、手を伸ばして柳の棒を拾い上げた。
She felt better then.	彼女はその時気分が良くなった。
She stayed bent over, looking at that flat grey fur.	彼女はかがんだままで、その平らな灰色の毛皮を見た。

It did not move and neither did Laura.	それは動かず、ローラも動かなかった。
She wondered what would happen if she poked it.	彼女はそれをつついたらどうなるだろうかと思った。
It might change to some other shape.	それは何か他の形に変わるかもしれない。
She poked it gently with the short stick.	彼女は短い棒でそれをそっとつついた。

A frightful snarl came out of it.	恐ろしい唸り声がそこから出た。
Its eyes sparkled mad, and fierce white teeth snapped almost on Laura’s nose.	その目は狂ったように輝き、激しい白い歯がローラの鼻のすぐ近くで噛みついた。

Laura ran with all her might.	ローラは全力で走った。
She could run fast.	彼女は速く走れた。
She did not stop running till she was in the dugout.	彼女は掘っ立て小屋に入るまで走るのを止めなかった。

“Goodness, Laura!” Ma said.	「まあ、ローラ!」ママは言った。
“You’ll make yourself sick, tearing around so in this heat.”	「この暑さの中を走り回って、病気になってしまうよ。」

All that time, Mary had been sitting like a little lady, spelling out words in the book that Ma was teaching her to read.	その間ずっと、メアリーは小さな淑女のように座って、ママが読むように教えている本の言葉を綴っていた。
Mary was a good little girl.	メアリーは良い子だった。

Laura had been bad and she knew it.	ローラは悪い子だったし、それを自覚していた。
She had broken her promise to Pa.	彼女はパパとの約束を破った。
But no one had seen her.	しかし誰も彼女を見ていなかった。
No one knew that she had started to go to the swimming-hole.	誰も彼女が水泳場に行こうとしていたことを知らない。
If she did not tell, no one would ever know.	彼女が言わなければ、誰も知ることはないだろう。
Only that strange animal knew, and it could not tell on her.	あの奇妙な動物だけが知っていて、それは彼女に言うことができなかった。
But she felt worse and worse inside.	しかし彼女は内心ますます気分が悪くなった。

That night she lay awake beside Mary.	その夜、彼女はメアリーの横で目を覚ました。
Pa and Ma sat in the starlight outside the door and Pa was playing his fiddle.	パパとママはドアの外の星明かりの下に座り、パパはバイオリンを弾いていた。

“Go to sleep, Laura,” Ma said, softly, and softly the fiddle sang to her.	「ローラ、寝なさい」とママは優しく言い、バイオリンは優しく彼女に歌った。
Pa was a shadow against the sky and his bow danced among the great stars.	パパは空を背景にした影で、彼の弓は大きな星々の間で踊った。

Everything was beautiful and good, except Laura.	ローラを除いて、すべてが美しく、良かった。
She had broken her promise to Pa.	彼女はパパとの約束を破った。
Breaking a promise was as bad as telling a lie.	約束を破ることは嘘をつくのと同じくらい悪いことだった。
Laura wished she had not done it.	ローラはそれをしなければよかったと思った。
But she had done it, and if Pa knew, he would punish her.	しかし、彼女はそれをしてしまったし、パパが知ったら、彼女を罰するだろう。

Pa went on playing softly in the starlight.	パパは星明かりの下でそっと演奏を続けた。
His fiddle sang to her sweetly and happily.	彼のフィドルは彼女に甘く幸せに歌った。
He thought she was a good little girl.	彼は彼女が善良な少女だと思った。
At last Laura could bear it no longer.	ついにローラは我慢できなくなった。

She slid out of bed and her bare feet stole across the cool earthen floor.	彼女はベッドから滑り降り、素足で冷たい土の床を横切った。
In her nightgown and nightcap she stood beside Pa.	彼女は寝巻きとナイトキャップを着てパパの横に立った。
He drew the last notes from the strings with his bow and she could feel him smiling down at her.	彼は弓で弦から最後の音を引き出し、彼女は彼が彼女に微笑みかけるのを感じることができました。

“What is it, little half-pint?” he asked her.	「どうしたんだ、ちびっこ?」と彼は彼女に尋ねた。

“Pa,” Laura said, in a quivery small voice, “I—I—started to go to the swimming-hole.”

“You did!” Pa exclaimed.	「そうだったんだ!」パパは叫んだ。
Then he asked, “Well, what stopped you?”	それから彼は尋ねた、「それで、何が君を止めたの?」

“I don’t know,” Laura whispered.	「わからない」ローラはささやいた。
“It had grey fur and it—it flattened out flat. It snarled.”	「それは灰色の毛皮で、それは、それは平らになった。それは唸った。」

“How big was it?” Pa asked.

Laura told him all about that strange animal.

Pa said, “It must have been a badger.”

Then for a long time he did not say anything and Laura waited.	それから長い間彼は何も言わなかったし、ローラは待った。
Laura could not see his face in the dark, but she leaned against his knee and she could feel how strong and kind he was.	ローラは暗闇の中で彼の顔を見ることができなかったが、彼女は彼の膝にもたれかかり、彼がどれほど強く親切であるかを感じることができた。

“Well,” he said at last, “I hardly know what to do, Laura.	「さて」と彼はついに言った、「私は何をすべきかほとんどわからない、ローラ。

It is hard to know what to do with a person you can’t trust.	信頼できない人に対して何をすべきかを知るのは難しい。

“Wh-at?” Laura quavered.

Your Ma will have to do it because I must work at Nelson’s.	私はネルソンのところで働かなければならないので、ママがそれをしなければならないだろう。

You are not to go out of her sight all day.	あなたは一日中彼女の視界から外れてはいけない。
If you are good all day, then we will let you try again to be a little girl we can trust.	もしあなたが一日中良い子なら、私たちはあなたを信頼できる小さな女の子にもう一度挑戦させるでしょう。

“How about it, Caroline?” he asked Ma.

「どうだい、キャロライン?」と彼はママに尋ねた。

“Very well, Charles,” Ma said out of the dark.	「とても良いよ、チャールズ」とママは暗闇から言った。
“I will watch her tomorrow.	「明日は私が彼女を見守るよ。
But I am sure she will be good.	でも、彼女は良い子になると思うよ。
Now back to bed, Laura, and go to sleep.”	さあ、ベッドに戻って、ローラ、そして寝なさい。」

The next day was a dreadful day.

次の日はひどい日だった。

Ma was mending, and Laura had to stay in the dugout.	ママは繕い物をしていたので、ローラは掘っ立て小屋にいなければならなかった。
She could not even fetch water from the spring, for that was going out of Ma’s sight.	彼女は泉から水を汲むことさえできなかった、なぜならそれはママの視界から外れるからだった。
Mary fetched the water,	メアリーは水を汲み、
Mary took Carrie to walk on the prairie.	メアリーはキャリーを連れて大草原を散歩した。
Laura had to stay in.	ローラは中にいなければならなかった。

Jack laid his nose on his paws and waggled, he jumped out on the path and looked back at her, smiling with his ears, begging her to come out.	ジャックは鼻を前足に置いて揺らし、小道に飛び出して彼女を振り返り、耳を立てて笑い、彼女に出てくるように懇願した。
He could not understand why she did not.	彼は彼女がなぜそうしないのか理解できなかった。

Laura helped Ma.	ローラはママを手伝った。
She washed the dishes and made both beds and swept the floor and set the table.	彼女は皿を洗い、両方のベッドを整え、床を掃き、テーブルを整えた。
At dinner she sat bowed on her bench and ate what Ma set before her.	夕食の時に彼女はベンチに頭を垂れて座り、ママが目の前に置いたものを食べた。
Then she wiped the dishes.	それから彼女は皿を拭いた。
After that she ripped a sheet that was worn in the middle.	その後、彼女は真ん中が擦り切れたシーツを裂いた。
Ma turned the strips of muslin and pinned them together, and Laura whipped the new seam, over and over with tiny stitches.	ママはモスリンの布を裏返してピンで留め、ローラは新しい縫い目を小さな縫い目で何度も縫った。

She thought that seam and that day would never end.

彼女はその縫い目とその日が終わらないと思った。

But at last Ma rolled up her mending and it was time to get supper.

“You have been a good girl, Laura,” Ma said.	「ローラ、いい子だったよね」とママは言った。
“We will tell Pa so.	「パパにそう伝えましょう。
And tomorrow morning you and I are going to look for that badger.	そして明日の朝、あなたと私はそのアナグマを探しに行く。
I am sure he saved you from drowning, for if you had gone to that deep water you would have gone into it.	彼があなたを溺死から救ったに違いない、もしあなたがあの深い水に行ったら、あなたはそこに落ちていただろう。
Once you begin being naughty, it is easier to go on and on, and sooner or later something dreadful happens.”	一度いたずらを始めると、それを続けるのは簡単で、遅かれ早かれ恐ろしいことが起こる。」

“Yes, Ma,” Laura said.	「はい、ママ」ローラは言った。
She knew that now.	彼女は今それを知った。

The whole day was gone.	一日が過ぎた。
Laura had not seen that sunrise, nor the shadows of clouds on the prairie.	ローラはその日の出も、大草原の雲の影も見ていなかった。
The morning-glories were withered and that day’s blue flags were dead.	朝顔は枯れ、その日の青い旗は死んでいた。
All day Laura had not seen the water running in the creek, the little fishes in it, and the water-bugs skating over it.	ローラは一日中、小川を流れる水も、その中の小さな魚も、その上を滑る水虫も見ていなかった。
She was sure that being good could never be as hard as being watched.	彼女は、良い子でいることは、見張られていることほど難しいことではないと確信していた。

Next day she went with Ma to look for the badger.	翌日、彼女はママと一緒にアナグマを探しに行った。
In the path she showed Ma the place where he had flattened himself on the grass.	小道で、彼女はママにアナグマが草の上に身をかがめていた場所を見せた。
Ma found the hole where he lived.	ママはアナグマが住んでいる穴を見つけた。
It was a round hole under a clump of grass on the prairie bank.	それは草原の土手の草の塊の下にある丸い穴だった。
Laura called to him and she poked a stick into the hole.	ローラはアナグマに呼びかけ、穴に棒を突っ込んだ。

If the badger was at home, he would not come out.	アナグマが家にいたら、出て来ないだろう。
Laura never saw that old grey badger again.	ローラはあの老いた灰色のアナグマを二度と見ることはなかった。
