Chapter 4: Deep Water

第4章: 深い水

In the dugout Laura and Mary took off all their clothes, and over their bare skins they put on old patched dresses.	掘っ立て小屋の中で、ローラとメアリーは服を全部脱ぎ、素肌の上に古い継ぎ接ぎのドレスを着た。
Ma tied on her sunbonnet, Pa took Carrie on his arm, and they all set out.	ママは日よけ帽を結び、パパはキャリーを腕に抱え、みんなで出発した。

They went past the cattle path and the rushes, past the willow valley and the plum thickets.	牛道とイグサを通り過ぎ、柳の谷とプラムの茂みを通り過ぎた。
They went down a steep, grassy bank, and then across a level place where the grass was tall and coarse.	彼らは急な草の斜面を下り、それから草が背が高く粗い平らな場所を横切った。
They passed a high, almost straight-up wall of earth where no grass grew.	彼らは草が生えていない、高く、ほとんど真っ直ぐな土の壁を通り過ぎた。

“What is that, Pa?” Laura asked;	「あれは何、パパ?」ローラは尋ねた。
and Pa said, “That is a tableland, Laura.”	あれは台地だよ、ローラ」とパパは言った。

He pushed on through the thick, tall grass, making a path for Ma and Mary and Laura.	彼はママとメアリーとローラのために道を切り開きながら、厚く背の高い草の中を進んだ。
Suddenly they came out of the high grass and the creek was there.	突然、彼らは背の高い草から出てきて、小川がそこにあった。

It ran twinkling over white gravel into a wide pool, curved against a low bank where the grass was short.	それは白い砂利の上をきらめきながら広い水たまりに流れ込み、草が短い低い土手に向かって曲がっていた。
Tall willows stood up on the other side of the pool.	水たまりの向こう側には背の高い柳が立っていた。
Flat on the water lay a shimmery picture of those willows, with every green leaf fluttering.	水面に平らに、緑の葉がすべてひらひらと舞う柳のきらめく絵が横たわっていた。

Ma sat on the grassy bank and kept Carrie with her, while Laura and Mary waded into the pool.

ママは草むらの土手に座ってキャリーを連れて行き、ローラとメアリーは水たまりに入っていった。

“Stay near the edge, girls!” Ma told them.	「端の近くにいなさい、娘たち!」とママは言った。
“Don’t go in where it’s deep.”	「深いところには入らないように」

The water came up under their skirts and made them float.	水がスカートの下から上がってきて、浮かび上がった。
Then the calico got wet and stuck to their legs.	すると、カリコが濡れて足にくっついた。
Laura went in deeper and deeper.	ローラはどんどん深く入っていった。
The water came up and up, almost to her waist.	水はどんどん上がってきて、もう少しで腰まで来そうだった。
She squatted down, and it came to her chin.	彼女はしゃがみこむと、水は彼女の顎まで来た。

Everything was watery, cool, and unsteady.	全てが水っぽく、冷たく、不安定だった。
Laura felt very light.	ローラはとても軽く感じた。
Her feet were so light that they almost lifted off the creek bottom.	彼女の足はとても軽く、小川の底から浮き上がりそうだった。
She hopped, and splashed with her arms.	彼女は跳びはね、腕で水をはねかけた。

“Oo, Laura, don’t!”	「ああ、ローラ、やめて!」
Mary cried.	メアリーは叫んだ。

“Don’t go in any farther, Laura,” said Ma.

「ローラ、これ以上は入らないで」とママは言った。

Laura kept on splashing.	ローラは水をはねかけ続けた。
One big splash lifted both feet.	大きな水しぶきが両足を持ち上げた。
Her feet came up, her arms did as they pleased, her head went under the water.	彼女の足が浮き上がり、腕は勝手な動きをし、頭は水中に沈んだ。
She was scared.	彼女は怖かった。
There was nothing to hold on to, nothing solid anywhere.	つかむものも、どこにも固いものもなかった。
Then she was standing up, streaming water all over.	それから彼女は立ち上がり、全身から水を流した。
But her feet were solid.	しかし彼女の足はしっかりしていた。

Nobody had seen that.	誰もそれを見ていなかった。
Mary was tucking up her skirts,	メアリーはスカートをたくし上げ、
Ma was playing with Carrie.	ママはキャリーと遊んでいた。
Pa was out of sight among the willows.	パパは柳の木々の間に見えなくなっていた。
Laura walked as fast as she could in the water.	ローラは水の中をできるだけ速く歩いた。
She stepped down deeper and deeper.	彼女はどんどん深く降りていった。
The water came up past her middle, up to her arms.	水は彼女の腰を越えて腕まで上がってきた。

Suddenly, deep down in the water, something grabbed her foot.

突然、水の奥深くで何かが彼女の足を掴んだ。

The thing jerked, and down she went into the deep water.	その何かがぐいと引っ張り、彼女は深い水の中へ落ちた。
She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t see.	彼女は息ができず、目も見えなかった。
She grabbed and could not get hold of anything.	彼女は掴もうとしたが何も掴めなかった。
Water filled her ears and her eyes and her mouth.	水が彼女の耳と目と口を満たした。

Then her head came out of the water close to Pa’s head.	そして彼女の頭がパパの頭の近くで水から出た。
Pa was holding her.	パパは彼女を抱いていた。

“Well, young lady,” Pa said, “you went out too far, and how did you like it?”

「さて、お嬢さん」パパは言った、「あなたは遠くへ行き過ぎた、どうだった?」

Laura could not speak;	ローラは話せなかった。
she had to breathe.	彼女は息をしなければならなかった。

“You heard Ma tell you to stay close to the bank,” said Pa.	「ママが岸の近くにいるように言ったのを聞いただろう」とパパは言った。
“Why didn’t you obey her?	「なぜ彼女に従わなかったんだ?
You deserved a ducking, and I ducked you.	あなたは水に浸かるべきだったし、私はあなたを水に浸けた。
Next time you’ll do as you’re told.”	次回は言われた通りにするんだ。」

“Y-yes, Pa!” Laura spluttered.	「は、はい、パパ!」ローラは口ごもった。
“Oh, Pa, p-please do it again!”	「ああ、パパ、もう一度やって!」

Pa said, “Well, I’ll—!”	パパは言った、「そうか、私はー!」
Then his great laughter rang among the willows.	そして彼の大笑いが柳の間で鳴り響いた。

“Why didn’t you holler when I ducked you?” he asked Laura.	「私があなたを水につけた時、なぜ叫ばなかったんだ?」彼はローラに尋ねた。
“Weren’t you scared?”	「怖くなかったのか?」

“I w-was—awful scared!” Laura gasped.	「私、怖かったわー!」ローラは息を切らした。
“But p-please do it again?”	「でも、もう一回やって?」
Then she asked him, “How did you get down there, Pa?”	それから彼女は彼に尋ねた、「パパ、どうやってそこまで降りたの?」

Pa told her he had swum under water from the willows.	パパは柳の木から水中を泳いできたと彼女に言った。
But they could not stay in the deep water;	しかし、彼らは深い水の中にとどまることができなかった。
they must go near the bank and play with Mary.	彼らは岸の近くに行ってメアリと遊ばなければならなかった。

All that afternoon Pa and Laura and Mary played in the water.	その午後ずっとパパとローラとメアリは水の中で遊んだ。
They waded and they fought water fights, and whenever Laura or Mary went near the deep water, Pa ducked them.	彼らは水の中を歩き回り、水をかけ合って戦い、ローラやメアリが深い水の近くに行くと、パパは彼らを水に沈めた。
Mary was a good girl after one ducking, but Laura was ducked many times.	メアリは一度水に沈められた後は良い子だったが、ローラは何度も水に沈められた。

Then it was almost chore time and they had to go home.	それから、もうすぐ雑用の時間になったので、彼らは家に帰らなければならなかった。
They went dripping along the path through the tall grass, and when they came to the tableland Laura wanted to climb it.	彼らは背の高い草の中の小道を水滴を落としながら歩き、台地に着くとローラはそこに登りたいと思った。

Pa climbed part way up, and Laura and Mary climbed, holding to his hands.	パパは途中まで登り、ローラとメアリはパパの手を握って登った。
The dry dirt slipped and slid.	乾いた土は滑り落ちた。
Tangled grass roots hung down from the bulging edge overhead.	もつれた草の根が頭上の膨らんだ端から垂れ下がっていた。
Then Pa lifted Laura up and set her on the tableland.	それからパパはローラを持ち上げて台地に置いた。

It really was like a table.	そこは本当にテーブルのようだった。
That ground rose up high above the tall grasses, and it was round, and flat on top.	その地面は背の高い草よりも高くそびえ、丸く、上は平らだった。
The grass there was short and soft.	そこの草は短く柔らかかった。

Pa and Laura and Mary stood up on top of that tableland, and looked over the grass tops and the pool to the prairie beyond.	パパとローラとメアリーは台地の上に立ち、草のてっぺんと水たまりを見渡して、その向こうにある大草原を見た。
They looked all around at prairies stretching to the rim of the sky.	彼らは空の端まで広がる大草原をぐるりと見回した。

Then they had to slide down again to the lowland and go on home.	それから、彼らは再び低地に滑り降りて、家に向かわなければならなかった。
That had been a wonderful afternoon.	それは素晴らしい午後だった。

“It’s been lots of fun,” Pa said.	「とても楽しかった」とパパは言った。
“But you girls remember what I tell you.	「でも、娘たちは私の言うことを覚えておくように。
Don’t you ever go near that swimming-hole unless I am with you.”	私が一緒にいない限り、あの水泳場には近づかないように。」
