Chapter 2: The House in the Ground

第2章: 地面の家

Early in the morning Pa helped Mr. Hanson move the wagon bows and cover onto Mr. Hanson’s wagon.	早朝、パパはハンソンさんが幌馬車の弓状の骨組みと幌をハンソンさんの幌馬車に移すのを手伝った。
Then they brought everything out of the dugout house, up the bank, and they packed it in the covered wagon.	それから、彼らは掘っ立て小屋から全てのものを運び出し、土手まで運び、幌馬車に積み込んだ。

Mr. Hanson offered to help move the things from Pa’s wagon into the dugout, but Ma said, “No, Charles. We will move in when you come back.”

He tied Bunny behind it, and he rode away to town with Mr. Hanson.	彼はバニーをその後ろにつなぎ、ハンソンさんと一緒に町へ向かった。

Laura watched Pet and Patty and Bunny going away.	ローラはペットとパティとバニーが去っていくのを見送った。
Her eyes smarted and her throat ached.	彼女の目は痛み、喉は痛んだ。
Pet and Patty arched their necks, and their manes and tails rippled in the wind.	ペットとパティは首を反らせ、たてがみとしっぽを風になびかせた。
They went away gaily, not knowing that they were never coming back.	彼らは二度と戻ってこないことを知らぬまま、陽気に去っていった。

The creek was singing to itself down among the willows, and the soft wind bent the grasses over the top of the bank.	小川は柳の間で独り言を歌い、そよ風が土手の上の草をなびかせた。
The sun was shining and all around the wagon was clean, wide space to be explored.	太陽は輝き、荷馬車の周りはすべてきれいで、探検できる広い空間だった。

The first thing was to untie Jack from the wagon wheel.	まず最初にすることは、ジャックを荷馬車の車輪から解くことだった。
Mr. Hanson’s two dogs had gone away, and Jack could run about as he pleased.	ハンソンさんの2匹の犬はどこかへ行ってしまって、ジャックは好きなように走り回ることができた。
He was so glad that he jumped up against Laura to lick her face and made her sit down hard.	彼は嬉しくて、ローラの顔をなめようと飛びかかり、彼女を強く座らせた。
Then he ran down the path and Laura ran after him.	それから彼は小道を走り、ローラは彼の後を追いかけた。

Ma picked up Carrie and said: “Come, Mary. Let’s go look at the dugout.”

ママはキャリーを抱き上げ、「メアリー、おいで。掘っ立て小屋を見に行きましょう」と言った。

Jack got to the door first.	ジャックが最初にドアに着いた。
It was open.	ドアは開いていた。
He looked in, and then he waited for Laura.	彼は中を覗き込み、それからローラを待った。

All around that door green vines were growing out of the grassy bank, and they were full of flowers.	そのドアの周りには草の土手から緑のつるが伸びていて、花がいっぱいだった。
Red and blue and purple and rosy-pink and white and striped flowers all had their throats wide open as if they were singing glory to the morning.	赤、青、紫、バラ色のピンク、白、縞模様の花は、まるで朝の栄光を歌っているかのように、すべて喉を大きく開いていた。
They were morning-glory flowers.	それは朝顔の花だった。

Laura went under those singing flowers into the dugout.	ローラは歌う花々の下をくぐって掘っ立て小屋の中に入った。
It was one room, all white.	そこは真っ白な一部屋だった。
The earth walls had been smoothed and whitewashed.	土壁は平らにされ、白く塗られていた。
The earth floor was smooth and hard.	土の床は平らで固かった。

When Ma and Mary stood in the doorway the light went dim.	ママとメアリーが戸口に立つと、光が薄暗くなった。
There was a small greased-paper window beside the door.	ドアの横には油紙を張った小さな窓があった。
But the wall was so thick that the light from the window stayed near the window.	しかし、壁がとても厚かったので、窓からの光は窓の近くにとどまっていた。

That front wall was built of sod.	その正面の壁は芝でできていた。
Mr. Hanson had dug out his house, and then he had cut long strips of prairie sod and laid them on top of one another, to make the front wall.	ハンソンさんは家を掘り出し、それから長い草原の芝を切り、それを重ねて正面の壁を作った。
It was a good, thick wall with not one crack in it.	それは、ひび割れ一つない、良い厚い壁だった。
No cold could get through that wall.	寒さはその壁を通り抜けることはできなかった。

Ma was pleased.	ママは喜んだ。
She said, “It’s small, but it’s clean and pleasant.”	彼女は「小さいけど、清潔で快適ね」と言った。
Then she looked up at the ceiling and said, “Look, girls!”	それから彼女は天井を見上げて、「見て、娘たち!」と言った。

The ceiling was made of hay.	天井は干し草でできていた。
Willow boughs had been laid across and their branches woven together, but here and there the hay that had been spread on them showed through.	柳の枝が横に渡され、枝が一緒に編み込まれていたが、あちこちに干し草が広がっていた。

“Well!” Ma said.

「まあ!」とママは言った。

They all went up the path and stood on the roof of that house.	彼らは皆小道を登り、その家の屋根の上に立った。
No one could have guessed it was a roof.	誰もそれが屋根だとは想像できなかった。
Grass grew on it and waved in the wind just like all the grasses along the creek bank.	草が生え、小川の土手沿いのすべての草と同じように風に揺れていた。

“Goodness,” said Ma.	「まあ」とママは言った。
“Anybody could walk over this house and never know it’s here.”	「誰でもこの家の上を歩いて、ここにあることを知らないかもしれないよ」

But Laura spied something.	しかし、ローラは何かを見た。
She bent over and parted the grasses with her hands, and then she cried: “I’ve found the stovepipe hole!	彼女はかがんで、手で草を分け、そして叫んだ。「煙突の穴を見つけたよ!
Look, Mary! Look!”	見て、メアリー! 見て!」

Ma and Mary stopped to look, and Carrie leaned out from Ma’s arm and looked, and Jack came pushing to look.	ママとメアリーは立ち止まって見、キャリーはママの腕から身を乗り出して見、ジャックは押してきて見た。
They could look right down into the whitewashed room under the grass.	彼らは草の下の白塗りの部屋を真下に見ることができた。

They looked at it till Ma said, “We’ll brush out the place and move in what we can before Pa comes back.	ママが「パパが帰ってくる前に、そこを掃除して、できるだけ荷物を運び込もう。

Mary carried the large pail and Laura carried the small one, and they went down the path again.	メアリーは大きな桶を運び、ローラは小さな桶を運び、彼らは再び小道を下った。

Ma found a willow-twig broom in a corner, and she brushed the walls carefully.	ママは隅に柳の小枝でできたほうきを見つけ、壁を注意深く掃いた。
Mary watched Carrie to keep her from falling down into the creek, and Laura took the little pail and went for water.	メアリーはキャリーが小川に落ちないように見守り、ローラは小さな桶を持って水を汲みに行った。

She hoppity-skipped down the stair-steps to the end of a little bridge across the creek.	彼女は小川にかかる小さな橋の端まで階段をピョンピョンと飛び降りた。
The bridge was one wide plank.	橋は幅の広い厚板一枚だった。
Its other end was under a willow tree.	その橋のもう一方の端は柳の木の下にあった。

The tall willows fluttered slender leaves up against the sky, and little willows grew around them in clumps.	背の高い柳は細い葉を空に向かってひらひらさせ、小さな柳がその周りに群生していた。
They shaded all the ground, and it was cool and bare.	柳は地面を覆い、涼しく、むき出しだった。
The path went across it to a little spring, where cold, clear water fell into a tiny pool and then ran trickling to the creek.	小道はそこを横切って小さな泉まで続いていて、冷たく澄んだ水が小さな池に落ち、小川に流れ込んでいた。

Laura filled the little pail and went back across the sunny footbridge and up the steps.	ローラは小さなバケツをいっぱいにして、日当たりの良い歩道橋を渡って階段を上って戻った。
She went back and forth, fetching water in the little pail and pouring it into the big pail set on a bench inside the doorway.	彼女は行ったり来たりして、小さなバケツに水を汲んで、戸口の中のベンチに置いた大きなバケツに注いだ。

Then she helped Ma bring down from the wagon everything they could carry.	それから彼女はママが運べるものすべてを荷馬車から降ろすのを手伝った。
They had moved nearly everything into the dugout when Pa came rattling down the path.	パパが小道をガタガタと降りてきたとき、彼らはほとんどすべてのものを掘っ立て小屋に移していた。

“I like it,” said Ma.	「気に入ったよ」とママは言った。
“But I don’t know what to do about the beds.	「でも、ベッドをどうしたらいいかわからないよ。
I don’t want to put them on the floor.”	床に置きたくはないよ」

“What’s the matter with that?” Pa asked her.	「何が問題なんだ?」パパは彼女に尋ねた。
“We’ve been sleeping on the ground.”	「私たちは地面で寝てきたんだぞ」

“That’s different,” Ma said.	「それは違うよ」ママは言った。
“I don’t like to sleep on the floor in a house.”	「家の中で床に寝るのは好きじゃないよ」

“Well, that’s soon fixed,” said Pa.	「まあ、それはすぐに直せる」パパは言った。
“I’ll cut some willow boughs to spread the beds on, for tonight.	「今夜はベッドを敷くために柳の枝を切ってくるよ。
Tomorrow I’ll find some straight willow poles, and make a couple of bedsteads.”	明日は真っ直ぐな柳の棒を見つけて、ベッドの台をいくつか作るよ」

He took his ax and went whistling up the path, over the top of the house and down the slope beyond it to the creek.	彼は斧を持ち、口笛を吹きながら小道を登り、家の上を越えて、その向こうの斜面を下りて小川に向かった。
There lay a tiny valley where willows grew thick all along beside the water.	そこには小さな谷があり、水辺に沿って柳が密生していた。

Laura ran at his heels.	ローラは彼の踵を追いかけて走った。
“Let me help, Pa!” she panted.	「手伝わせて、パパ!」彼女は息を切らした。
“I can carry some.”	「私も運べるよ」

“Why, so you can,” said Pa, looking down at her with his eyes twinkling.	「そうか、できるな」パパは彼女を見下ろして目を輝かせた。
“There’s nothing like help when a man has a big job to do.”	「男が大きな仕事をするときには手伝いに勝るものはない」

Pa often said he did not know how he could manage without Laura.	パパはよく、ローラなしでどうやってやっていけるかわからないと言っていた。
She had helped him make the door for the log house in Indian Territory.	彼女はインディアン準州の丸太小屋のドアを作るのを手伝った。
Now she helped him carry the leafy willow boughs and spread them in the dugout.	今度は、葉のついた柳の枝を運んで、掘っ立て小屋に広げるのを手伝った。
Then she went with him to the stable.	それから彼女は彼と一緒に馬小屋に行った。

All four walls of the stable were built of sods, and the roof was willow-boughs and hay, with sods laid over it.	馬小屋の四方の壁はすべて芝でできており、屋根は柳の枝と干し草で、その上に芝が敷かれていた。
The roof was so low that Pa’s head touched it when he stood up straight.	屋根がとても低かったので、パパがまっすぐ立つと頭が触れた。
There was a manger of willow poles, and two oxen were tied there.	柳の棒でできた飼い葉桶があり、2頭の牛がそこにつながれていた。
One was a huge grey ox with short horns and gentle eyes.	1頭は短い角と優しい目をした巨大な灰色の牛だった。
The other was smaller, with fierce, long horns and wild eyes.	もう1頭は小さく、恐ろしい長い角と野生の目をした牛だった。
He was bright red-brown all over.	体全体が明るい赤茶色だった。

“Hello, Bright,” Pa said to him.

「やあ、ブライト」パパは彼に言った。

“And how are you, Pete, old fellow?” he asked the big ox, slapping him gently.

「元気か、ピート、あなたも」パパは大きな牛を優しく叩きながら尋ねた。

“Stand back out of the way, Laura,” he said, “till we see how these cattle act.	「ローラ、道から離れて立ってなさい」とパパは言った。「この牛たちがどうするか見るまで。
We’ve got to take them to water.”	水を飲ませなくちゃいけないんだ。」

He put ropes around their horns and led them out of the stable.	パパは牛の角にロープを巻きつけて、牛小屋から連れ出した。
They followed him slowly down the slope to a level path that went through green rushes to the flat edge of the creek.	牛たちはパパについてゆっくりと坂を下り、緑の葦の中を抜けて小川の平らな端まで続く平坦な道へと進んだ。
Laura slowly tagged after them.	ローラはゆっくりとその後をついて行った。
Their legs were clumsy and their big feet split in the middle.	足は不器用で、大きな足は真ん中で割れていた。
Their noses were broad and slimy.	鼻は広くてぬるぬるしていた。

Laura stayed outside the stable while Pa tied them to the manger.	パパが牛を飼い葉桶に縛り付けている間、ローラは馬小屋の外にいた。
She walked with him toward the dugout.	彼女は彼と一緒に掘っ立て小屋に向かって歩いた。

“Pa,” she asked, in a little voice, “did Pet and Patty truly want to go out West?”

「パパ」彼女は小さな声で尋ねた。「ペットとパティは本当に西部に行きたかったの?」

“Yes, Laura,” Pa told her.

「そうだよ、ローラ」パパは彼女に言った。

“Oh, Pa,” she said, and there was a tremble in her voice, “I don’t think I like cattle—much.”

「ああ、パパ」彼女は声を震わせながら言った。「私は牛があまり好きではないと思う。」

Pa took her hand and comforted it in his big one.	パパは彼女の手を取って、大きな手で慰めた。
He said, “We must do the best we can, Laura, and not grumble.	彼は言った。「ローラ、私たちはできる限りのことをしなければならず、不平を言ってはいけない。
What must be done is best done cheerfully.	しなければならないことは、元気にやった方が良い。
And some day we will have horses again.”	そしていつかまた馬を飼うことになるだろう。」

“When, Pa?” she asked him, and he said, “When we raise our first crop of wheat.”

「いつ、パパ?」と彼女は彼に尋ね、彼は「最初の小麦の収穫ができたら」と言った。

Then they went into the dugout.	それから彼らは掘っ立て小屋に入った。
Ma was cheerful,	ママは元気で、
Mary and Carrie were already washed and combed, and everything was neat.	メアリーとキャリーはすでに洗って髪をとかしてあり、すべてがきちんとしていた。
The beds were made on the willow boughs	ベッドは柳の枝の上に作られ、
and supper was ready.	夕食の準備ができていた。

After supper they all sat on the path before the door.	夕食後、彼らは皆ドアの前の小道に座った。
Pa and Ma had boxes to sit on.	パパとママは座る箱を持っていた。
Carrie cuddled sleepily in Ma’s lap, and Mary and Laura sat on the hard path, their legs hanging over its sharp edge.	キャリーはママの膝に抱かれて眠そうにしており、メアリーとローラは硬い小道に座り、足をその鋭い端にぶら下げていた。
Jack turned around three times and lay down with his head against Laura’s knee.	ジャックは3回転して、ローラの膝に頭を乗せて横になった。

They all sat quiet, looking across Plum Creek and the willows, watching the sun sink far away in the west, far away over the prairie lands.

彼らは皆静かに座り、プラム・クリークと柳を見渡し、太陽が西の遠く、大草原の向こうに沈むのを眺めていた。

At last Ma drew a long breath.	ついにママは長い息を吸った。
“It is all so tame and peaceful,” she said.	「すべてがとても穏やかで平和だよ」と彼女は言った。
“There will be no wolves or Indians howling tonight.	「今夜は狼やインディアンの遠吠えは聞こえないだろう。
I haven’t felt so safe and at rest since I don’t know when.”	いつ以来かわからないほど、こんなに安全で安心した気分になったことはないよ」

Pa’s slow voice answered, “We’re safe enough, all right.	パパのゆっくりとした声が答えた。「確かに十分安全だ。
Nothing can happen here.”	ここでは何も起こらない」

The peaceful colours went all around the rim of the sky.	穏やかな色が空の縁をぐるりと囲んだ。
The willows breathed and the water talked to itself in the dusk.	柳は息づき、水は夕暮れの中で独り言を言った。
The land was dark grey.	大地は暗い灰色だった。
The sky was light grey and stars prickled through it.	空は明るい灰色で、星がきらめいていた。

“It’s bedtime,” Ma said.	「もう寝る時間よ」とママは言った。
“And here is something new, anyway.	「それに、とにかく、これは新しいものだ。
We’ve never slept in a dugout before.”	私たちはこれまで掘っ立て小屋で寝たことはなかった。」
She was laughing, and Pa laughed softly with her.	彼女は笑っていて、パパも彼女と一緒にそっと笑った。

Laura lay in bed and listened to the water talking and the willows whispering.	ローラはベッドに横たわり、水の音と柳のささやきを聞いていた。
She would rather sleep outdoors, even if she heard wolves, than be so safe in this house dug under the ground.	彼女は、狼の声が聞こえたとしても、地面を掘って作ったこの家で安全に過ごすよりも、屋外で寝たいと思った。
