Chapter 21: INDIAN JAMBOREE

第21章: インディアンの大集会

Winter ended at last.	ついに冬が終わった。
There was a softer note in the sound of the wind, and the bitter cold was gone.	風の音に柔らかい音色が混じり、厳しい寒さは去っていた。
One day Pa said he had seen a flock of wild geese flying north.	ある日、パパは野生のガチョウの群れが北へ飛んでいくのを見たと言った。
It was time to take his furs to Independence.	毛皮をインディペンデンスに運ぶ時が来た。

Ma said, “The Indians are so near!”

ママは「インディアンがとても近くにいるよ!」と言った。

“They are perfectly friendly,” said Pa.	「彼らは全く友好的だ」とパパは言った。
He often met Indians in the woods where he was hunting.	彼は狩りをしていた森でよくインディアンに会った。
There was nothing to fear from Indians.	インディアンを恐れる必要はなかった。

“No,” Ma said.	「いいえ」とママは言った。
But Laura knew that Ma was afraid of Indians.	しかし、ローラはママがインディアンを恐れていることを知っていた。
“You must go, Charles,” she said.	「行かなくてはいけないよ、チャールズ」と彼女は言った。
“We must have a plow and seeds.	「鋤と種が必要だ。
And you will soon be back again.”	そして、すぐに戻ってくるでしょう。」

Before dawn next morning Pa hitched Pet and Patty to the wagon, loaded his furs into it, and drove away.

翌朝夜明け前にパパはペットとパティを荷車につなぎ、毛皮を積み込んで出発した。

Laura and Mary counted the long, empty days.	ローラとメアリーは長く退屈な日々を数えた。
One, two, three, four, and still Pa had not come home.	1日、2日、3日、4日、それでもパパは帰って来なかった。
In the morning of the fifth day they began earnestly to watch for him.	5日目の朝、2人は真剣にパパを待ち始めた。

It was a sunny day.	天気の良い日だった。
There was still a little chill in the wind, but it smelled of spring.	風にはまだ少し冷たさがあったが、春の匂いがした。
The vast blue sky resounded to the quacks of wild ducks and the honk-honk-honking of wild geese.	広大な青い空に野生の鴨のガーガーという鳴き声と野生のガチョウのガーガーという鳴き声が響き渡った。
The long, black-dotted lines of them were all flying north.	長い黒い点線の列はすべて北に向かって飛んでいた。

Laura and Mary played outdoors in the wild, sweet weather.	ローラとメアリーは野生の甘い天候の中で屋外で遊んだ。
And poor Jack watched them and sighed.	そしてかわいそうなジャックは彼らを見てため息をついた。
He couldn’t run and play any more, because he was chained.	彼は鎖でつながれていたので、もう走ったり遊んだりすることはできなかった。
Laura and Mary tried to comfort him, but he didn’t want petting.	ローラとメアリーは彼を慰めようとしたが、彼は撫でられたくなかった。
He wanted to be free again, as he used to be.	彼は以前のように再び自由になりたかった。

Pa didn’t come that morning;	その朝パパは来なかった。
he didn’t come that afternoon.	その午後も彼は来なかった。
Ma said it must have taken him a long time to trade his furs.	ママは毛皮を売るのに長い時間がかかったに違いないと言った。

That afternoon Laura and Mary were playing hop-scotch.	その午後ローラとメアリーは石けり遊びをしていた。
They marked the lines with a stick in the muddy yard.	彼女たちは泥だらけの庭に棒で線を引いた。
Mary really didn’t want to hop;	メアリーは本当は跳びたくなかった。
she was almost eight years old and she didn’t think that hop-scotch was a ladylike play.	彼女はもうすぐ8歳で、石けり遊びは上品な遊びではないと思っていた。
But Laura teased and coaxed, and said that if they stayed outdoors they would be sure to see Pa the minute he came from the creek bottoms.	しかしローラはからかい、なだめ、そしてもし外にいるなら、パパが小川の底から来た瞬間に必ず会えるだろうと言った。
So Mary was hopping.	だからメアリーは跳んでいた。

Suddenly she stopped on one foot and said, “What’s that?”

Laura had already heard the queer sound and she was listening to it.	ローラはすでに奇妙な音を聞き、それに耳を傾けていた。
She said, “It’s the Indians.”	彼女は「インディアンだ」と言った。

Mary’s other foot dropped and she stood frozen still.	メアリーはもう一方の足を下ろし、凍りついたように立った。
She was scared.	彼女は怖かった。
Laura was not exactly scared, but that sound made her feel funny.	ローラは怖くはなかったが、その音に奇妙な感じがした。
It was the sound of quite a lot of Indians, chopping with their voices.	それはかなり多くのインディアンの声が混ざり合った音だった。
It was something like the sound of an ax chopping, and something like a dog barking, and it was something like a song, but not like any song that Laura had ever heard.	それは斧で木を切るような音であり、犬が吠えるような音であり、歌のような音でもあったが、ローラが聞いたことのあるどんな歌とも似ていなかった。
It was a wild, fierce sound, but it didn’t seem angry.	それは野性的で激しい音だったが、怒っているようには聞こえなかった。

Laura tried to hear it more clearly.	ローラはもっとはっきり聞こうとした。
She couldn’t hear it very well, because hills and trees and the wind were in the way, and Jack was savagely growling.	丘や木々や風が邪魔をしたり、ジャックが激しく唸ったりしていたので、彼女はそれをあまりよく聞くことができなかった。

Ma came outdoors and listened a minute.	ママは外に出て、しばらく耳を傾けた。
Then she told Mary and Laura to come into the house.	それから彼女はメアリーとローラに家に入るように言った。
Ma took Jack inside, too, and pulled in the latch-string.	ママはジャックも中に入れ、掛け金を掛けた。

They didn’t play any more.	彼女たちはもう遊ばなかった。
They watched at the window, and listened to that sound.	彼女たちは窓から見ながら、その音に耳を傾けた。
It was harder to hear, in the house.	家の中では聞こえにくかった。
Sometimes they couldn’t hear it;	時々聞こえなかった。
then they heard it again.	そしてまた聞こえた。
It hadn’t stopped.	止まらなかった。

Ma and Laura did the chores earlier than usual.	ママとローラはいつもより早く家事を済ませた。
They locked Bunny and the cow and calf in the stable, and took the milk to the house.	彼らはバニーと牛と子牛を馬小屋に閉じ込め、牛乳を家へ運んだ。
Ma strained it and set it away.	ママは牛乳をこして、片付けた。
She drew a bucket of fresh water from the well, while Laura and Mary carried in wood.	ローラとメアリーが薪を運び込んでいる間に、ママは井戸から新鮮な水を汲み上げた。
All the time that sound went on;	その音はずっと続いていた。
it was louder, now, and faster.	今はもっと大きく、もっと速かった。
It made Laura’s heart beat fast.	ローラの心臓はドキドキした。

They all went into the house and Ma barred the door.	みんな家に入り、ママはドアにかんぬきをかけた。
The latch-string was already in.	掛け金の紐はすでに中にあった。
They wouldn’t go out of the house till morning.	彼らは朝まで家から出ないだろう。

The sun slowly sank.	太陽はゆっくりと沈んだ。
All around the edge of the prairie the edge of the sky flushed pink.	大草原の端の周り全体で空の端がピンク色に染まった。
Firelight flickered in the dusky house and Ma was getting supper, but Laura and Mary silently watched from the window.	薄暗い家の中で火の光がちらつき、ママは夕食の準備をしていたが、ローラとメアリーは窓から黙って見ていた。
They saw the colors fade from everything.	彼女たちはすべての色が薄れていくのを見た。
The land was shadowy and the sky was clear, pale gray.	大地は影に覆われ、空は澄んだ淡い灰色だった。
All the time that sound came from the creek bottoms, louder and louder, faster and faster.	その音はずっと小川の底から聞こえ、どんどん大きく、どんどん速くなっていった。
And Laura’s heart beat faster and louder.	そしてローラの心臓はますます速く、大きくなった。

How she shouted when she heard the wagon!	彼女は荷馬車の音を聞いてどんなに叫んだことか!
She ran to the door and jumped up and down, but she couldn’t unbar it.	彼女はドアまで走って行き、飛び跳ねたが、かんぬきを外すことができなかった。
Ma wouldn’t let her go out.	ママは彼女を外に出さなかった。
Ma went out, to help Pa bring in the bundles.	ママはパパが荷物を運び込むのを手伝うために外に出た。

He came in with his arms full, and Laura and Mary clung to his sleeves and jumped on his feet.	彼は両腕に荷物を抱えて入ってきて、ローラとメアリーは彼の袖にしがみつき、彼の足に飛びついた。
Pa laughed his jolly big laugh.	パパは陽気な大きな笑い声を笑った。
“Hey! hey! don’t upset me!” he laughed.	「おい! おい! 私を困らせるな!」と彼は笑った。
“What do you think I am?	「私は何だと思う?
A tree to climb?”	登る木か?」

He dropped the bundles on the table, he hugged Laura in a big bear hug, and tossed her and hugged her again.	彼は包みをテーブルに落とし、ローラを熊のように抱きしめて、放り投げて、また抱きしめた。
Then he hugged Mary snugly in his other arm.	それから彼はもう一方の腕でメアリーをぎゅっと抱きしめた。

“Listen, Pa,” Laura said.	「パパ、聞いて」ローラは言った。
“Listen to the Indians.	「インディアンの声を聞いて。
Why are they making that funny noise?”	どうしてあんな変な音を立てているの?」

“Oh, they’re having some kind of jamboree,” Pa said.	「ああ、彼らは何かお祭り騒ぎをしているんだ」パパは言った。
“I heard them when I crossed the creek bottoms.”	「小川の底を渡ったときに彼らの声を聞いたんだ」

Then he went out to unhitch the horses and bring in the rest of the bundles.	それから彼は馬を外して残りの荷物を運び込むために外に出た。
He had got the plow; he left it in the stable, but he brought all the seeds into the house for safety.	彼は鋤を手に入れていた。彼はそれを馬小屋に残したが、安全のためにすべての種を家の中に持ち込んだ。
He had sugar, not any white sugar this time, but brown.	彼は砂糖を持っていた、今回は白砂糖ではなく、黒砂糖だった。

But he had brought a little white flour.	しかし彼は少し白い小麦粉を持ってきていた。
There were cornmeal and salt and coffee and all the seeds they needed.	コーンミール、塩、コーヒー、そして必要な種がすべてあった。
Pa had even got seed potatoes.	パパは種芋まで手に入れていた。
Laura wished they might eat the potatoes but they must be saved to plant.	ローラは芋を食べられたらと思ったが、植えるために取っておかなければならなかった。

Then Pa’s face beamed and he opened a small paper sack.	それからパパの顔は輝き、彼は小さな紙袋を開けた。
It was full of crackers.	クラッカーがいっぱいだった。
He set it on the table, and he unwrapped and set beside it a glass jar full of little green cucumber pickles.	彼はそれをテーブルに置き、包みを解いて、小さな緑のキュウリのピクルスがいっぱい入ったガラスの瓶をその横に置いた。

“I thought we’d all have a treat,” he said.

「みんなで御馳走を食べようと思ったんだ」と彼は言った。

Laura’s mouth watered, and Ma’s eyes shone softly at Pa.	ローラの口にはよだれが出、ママの目はパパを優しく見つめていた。
He had remembered how she longed for pickles.	彼は彼女がピクルスをどれほど欲しがっているかを覚えていた。

That wasn’t all.	それだけではなかった。
He gave Ma a package and watched her unwrap it and in it was enough pretty calico to make her a dress.	彼はママに包みを渡し、彼女がそれを開けるのを見守った。その中には彼女のドレスを作るのに十分なきれいな更紗が入っていた。

“Oh, Charles, you shouldn’t! It’s too much!” she said.	「ああ、チャールズ、こんなことしちゃだめよ! これは高すぎるよ!」と彼女は言った。
But her face and Pa’s were two beams of joy.	しかし、彼女の顔とパパの顔は喜びに輝いていた。

Now he hung up his cap and his plaid coat on their pegs.	彼は帽子と格子縞のコートを掛け釘に掛けた。
His eyes looked sidewise at Laura and Mary, but that was all.	彼の目はローラとメアリーを横目で見ただけだった。
He sat down and stretched out his legs to the fire.	彼は腰を下ろし、足を火の方に伸ばした。

Mary sat down, too, and folded her hands in her lap.	メアリーも腰を下ろし、手を膝の上で組んだ。
But Laura climbed onto Pa’s knee and beat him with her fists.	しかし、ローラはパパの膝に登り、拳で彼を殴った。
“Where is it? Where is it? Where’s my present?” she said, beating him.	「どこにあるの? どこにあるの? 私のプレゼントはどこ?」と彼女は彼を殴りながら言った。

Pa laughed his big laugh, like great bells ringing, and he said, “Why, I do believe there is something in my blouse pocket.”

He took out an oddly shaped package, and very, very slowly he opened it.

“You first, Mary,” he said, “because you are so patient.”	「メアリー、君が先だ」と彼は言った。「君はとても忍耐強いからだ」
And he gave Mary a comb for her hair.	そして彼はメアリーに髪の毛用の櫛を渡した。
“And here, flutterbudget! this is for you,” he said to Laura.	「そして、お転婆さん! これは君のものだ」と彼はローラに言った。

The combs were exactly alike.	櫛は全く同じだった。
They were made of black rubber and curved to fit over the top of a little girl’s head.	それは黒いゴムでできていて、小さな女の子の頭のてっぺんにフィットするようにカーブしていた。
And over the top of the comb lay a flat piece of black rubber, with curving slits cut in it, and in the very middle of it a little five-pointed star was cut out.	そして櫛のてっぺんには、曲線の切れ込みが入った平らな黒いゴムが乗っていて、その真ん中には小さな五芒星が切り抜かれていた。
A bright-colored ribbon was drawn underneath, and the color showed through.	下には明るい色のリボンが引かれていて、色が透けて見えた。

The ribbon in Mary’s comb was blue, and the ribbon in Laura’s comb was red.

メアリーの櫛のリボンは青で、ローラの櫛のリボンは赤だった。

Ma smoothed back their hair and slid the combs into it, and there in the golden hair, exactly over the middle of Mary’s forehead, was a little blue star.	ママは二人の髪を後ろに撫でつけ、櫛を差し込んだ。すると、メアリーの額の真ん中にある金色の髪に小さな青い星が現れた。
And in Laura’s brown hair, over the middle of her forehead, was a little red star.	そしてローラの茶色い髪の毛には、額の真ん中に小さな赤い星があった。

Laura looked at Mary’s star, and Mary looked at Laura’s, and they laughed with joy.	ローラはメアリーの星を見て、メアリーはローラの星を見て、二人は喜んで笑った。
They had never had anything so pretty.	二人はこんなにきれいなものをもらったことがなかった。

Ma said, “But, Charles, you didn’t get yourself a thing!”

ママは「でも、チャールズ、あなたは自分のために何も買っていないよ!」と言った。

“Oh, I got myself a plow,” said Pa.	「ああ、自分のために鋤を買ったよ」とパパは言った。
“Warm weather’ll be here soon now, and I’ll be plowing.”	「もうすぐ暖かくなるし、耕すことになるからね」

That was the happiest supper they had had for a long time.	それは長い間、一番幸せな夕食だった。
Pa was safely home again.	パパはまた無事に家に戻った。
The fried salt pork was very good, after so many months of eating ducks and geese and turkeys and venison.	何ヶ月もアヒルやガチョウや七面鳥や鹿肉を食べた後だったので、塩漬け豚肉の炒め物はとてもおいしかった。
And nothing had ever tasted so good as those crackers and the little green sour pickles.	そして、あのクラッカーと小さな緑の酸っぱいピクルスほどおいしいものはなかった。

Pa told them about all the seeds.	パパは種についてみんなに話した。
He had got seeds of turnips and carrots and onions and cabbage.	パパはカブ、ニンジン、玉ねぎ、キャベツの種を買った。
He had got peas and beans.	パパはエンドウ豆と豆を買った。
And corn and wheat and tobacco and the seed potatoes.	そして、トウモロコシ、小麦、タバコ、種芋を買った。
And watermelon seeds.	そして、スイカの種を買った。
He said to Ma, “I tell you, Caroline, when we begin getting crops off this rich land of ours, we’ll be living like kings!”	パパはママに言った、「キャロライン、この豊かな土地から作物がとれるようになったら、王様のような生活ができるよ!」

They had almost forgotten the noise from the Indian camp.	彼らはインディアンの野営地からの騒音をほとんど忘れていた。
The window shutters were closed now, and the wind was moaning in the chimney and whining around the house.	窓の鎧戸は閉じられ、風は煙突の中でうなり、家の周りで泣き叫んでいた。
They were so used to the wind that they did not hear it.	彼らは風に慣れすぎていて、それを聞かなかった。
But when the wind was silent an instant, Laura heard again that wild, shrill, fast-beating sound from the Indian camps.	しかし、風が一瞬静かになったとき、ローラは再びインディアンの野営地から聞こえてくる野蛮で甲高く、速いビートの音を聞いた。

Then Pa said something to Ma that made Laura sit very still and listen carefully.	それからパパはママに何かを言い、ローラは静かに座って注意深く耳を傾けた。
He said that folks in Independence said that the government was going to put the white settlers out of the Indian territory.	彼は、インディペンデンスの人々は、政府が白人入植者をインディアンの領土から追い出すつもりだと言っていたと言った。
He said the Indians had been complaining and they had got that answer from Washington.	彼は、インディアンは不満を言っていて、ワシントンからその返事を受け取ったと言った。

“Oh, Charles, no!” Ma said.	「ああ、チャールズ、違うよ!」ママは言った。
“Not when we have done so much.”	「私たちがこんなにも頑張ったのに」

Pa said he didn’t believe it.	パパは信じないと言った。
He said, “They always have let settlers keep the land.	彼は言った、「彼らはいつも入植者に土地を保有させてきた。
They’ll make the Indians move on again.	彼らはインディアンをまた移動させるだろう。
Didn’t I get word straight from Washington that this country’s going to be opened for settlement any time now?”	私はワシントンからこの国が今すぐにでも入植のために開放されるという知らせを直接受け取ったではないか?」

“I wish they’d settle it and stop talking about it,” Ma said.

After Laura was in bed she lay awake a long time, and so did Mary.	ローラはベッドに入ってからも長い間起きていたし、メアリーもそうだった。
Pa and Ma sat in the firelight and candlelight, reading.	パパとママは暖炉の火とろうそくの明かりの下で座って本を読んでいた。
Pa had brought a newspaper from Kansas, and he read it to Ma.	パパはカンザスから新聞を持ってきて、ママに読んで聞かせた。
It proved that he was right, the government would not do anything to the white settlers.	それは彼が正しかったことを証明した、政府は白人入植者に何もしないだろう。

Whenever the sound of the wind died away, Laura could faintly hear the noise of that wild jamboree in the Indian camp.	風の音が消えるたびに、ローラはインディアンの野営地で開かれているあの野生のジャンボリーの音を微かに聞くことができた。
Sometimes even above the howling of the wind she thought she still heard those fierce yells of jubilation.	時々、風の唸り声よりも、あの激しい歓喜の叫び声が聞こえてくるのではないかとさえ思った。
Faster, faster, faster they made her heart beat.	彼女の心臓はますます速く鼓動した。
“Hi! Hi! Hi-yi! Hah! Hi! Hah!”	「ヒ! ヒ! ヒイ! ハッ! ヒ! ハッ!」
