Chapter 12: FRESH WATER TO DRINK

第12章: 飲み水

Pa had made the bedstead.

パパがベッドの枠を作った。

He had smoothed the oak slabs till there was not a splinter on them.	彼はオークの厚板を、ささくれ一つなくなるまで磨いた。
Then he pegged them firmly together.	それから、それらをしっかりとつなぎ合わせた。
Four slabs made a box to hold the straw-tick.	4枚の厚板で、麦わらの敷布団を入れる箱を作った。
Across the bottom of it Pa stretched a rope, zigzagged from side to side and pulled tight.	パパはその底にロープを張り、左右にジグザグに引っ張ってきつく締めた。

One end of the bedstead Pa pegged solidly to the wall, in a corner of the house.	パパはベッドの片方の端を家の隅の壁にしっかりと固定した。
Only one corner of the bed was not against a wall.	ベッドの角の1つだけが壁に接していなかった。
At this corner, Pa set up a tall slab.	この角にパパは背の高い厚板を立てた。
He pegged it to the bedstead.	彼はそれをベッドに固定した。
As high up as he could reach, he pegged two strips of oak to the walls and to the tall slab.	彼は届く限り高く、2本のオークの板を壁と背の高い厚板に固定した。

“There you are, Caroline!” he said.

The straw-tick was plump with the sweet-smelling grass, the quilt lay smooth, and the pretty pillow shams stood up crisply.	麦わらの敷布団は甘い香りのする草でふっくらとしており、キルトは滑らかに敷かれ、きれいな枕カバーはパリッと立っていた。
The shelf was a good place to store things.	棚は物を保管するのに良い場所だった。
The whole house had quite an air, with such a bed in it.	家全体が、そんなベッドがあるだけで、かなり雰囲気があった。

That night when Ma went to bed, she settled into the crackling straw-tick and said to Pa, “I declare, I’m so comfortable it’s almost sinful.”

その夜、ママは寝床に着くと、パチパチと音を立てる麦わらの敷布団に落ち着き、パパに言った、「本当に、とても気持ちよくて、ほとんど罪深いくらい。」

Mary and Laura still slept on the floor, but Pa would make a little bed for them as soon as he could.	メアリーとローラはまだ床で寝ていたが、パパはできる限り早く彼女たちのために小さなベッドを作るつもりだった。
He had made the big bed, and he had made a stout cupboard and padlocked it, so the Indians could not take all the cornmeal if they came again.	彼は大きなベッドを作り、頑丈な食器棚を作って南京錠をかけたので、インディアンが再び来たとしても、とうもろこし粉を全部持っていくことはできなかった。

The sunshine was blistering, even the winds were hot, and the prairie grasses were turning yellow.	日差しは焼けるように熱く、風さえも熱く、草原の草は黄色く変色していた。

Every morning, before Pa would let Mr. Scott go down the rope, he set a candle in a bucket and lighted it and lowered it to the bottom.	毎朝、パパはスコットさんがロープを降りる前に、バケツにろうそくを立てて火をともし、底まで下ろした。
Once Laura peeped over the edge and she saw the candle brightly burning, far down in the dark hole in the ground.	一度ローラが端から覗き込むと、地面の暗い穴のずっと下でろうそくが明るく燃えているのが見えた。

Then Pa would say, “Seems to be all right,” and he would pull up the bucket and blow out the candle.

“That’s all foolishness, Ingalls,” Mr. Scott said.	「そんなの馬鹿げたことだよ、インガルス」とスコットさんは言った。
“The well was all right yesterday.”	「昨日は井戸は大丈夫だったよ」

“You can’t ever tell,” Pa replied.	「絶対とは言えない」とパパは答えた。
“Better be safe than sorry.”	「後悔するより安全な方がいい」

Laura did not know what danger Pa was looking for by that candlelight.	ローラはパパがろうそくの明かりでどんな危険を探しているのか分からなかった。
She did not ask, because Pa and Mr. Scott were busy.	彼女はパパとスコットさんが忙しかったので尋ねなかった。
She meant to ask later, but she forgot.	彼女は後で尋ねようと思ったが忘れてしまった。

One morning Mr. Scott came while Pa was eating breakfast.	ある朝、パパが朝食を食べている間にスコットさんが来た。
They heard him shout: “Hi, Ingalls! It’s sunup. Let’s go!”	彼らは彼が叫ぶのを聞いた。「やあ、インガルス! 日の出だ。行こう!」

“Did you send down the candle?” Ma asked.

Pa cut the empty bucket off the rope and tied the rope firmly to the windlass.	パパは空のバケツをロープから切り離し、ロープを巻き上げ機にしっかりと結びつけた。

“Charles, you can’t.	「チャールズ、できないよ。
You mustn’t,” Ma said.	してはいけない」とママは言った。

“Caroline, I’ve got to.”

“You can’t. Oh, Charles, no!”

「できないよ。ああ、チャールズ、だめ!」

“I’ll make it all right.	「大丈夫にするよ。
I won’t breathe till I get out.	外に出るまで息をしないよ。
We can’t let him die down there.”	彼をそこで死なせるわけにはいかない」

Ma said, fiercely: “Laura, keep back!”	ママは激しく言った。「ローラ、下がって!」
So Laura kept back.	だからローラは下がった。
She stood against the house and shivered.	彼女は家にもたれて立って震えた。

“No, no, Charles! I can’t let you,” Ma said.	「だめ、だめ、チャールズ! あなたを行かせるわけにはいかない」とママは言った。
“Get on Patty and go for help.”	「パティに乗って助けを呼びに行って」

“There isn’t time.”

「時間がない」

“Charles, if I can’t pull you up—if you keel over down there and I can’t pull you up——”

“Caroline, I’ve got to,” Pa said.	「キャロライン、行かなければならない」とパパは言った。
He swung into the well.	彼は井戸に降りていった。
His head slid out of sight, down the rope.	彼の頭はロープを伝って見えなくなった。

Ma crouched and shaded her eyes, staring down into the well.

ママはしゃがんで目を覆い、井戸の中を見つめた。

All over the prairie meadowlarks were rising, singing, flying straight up into the sky.	大草原のいたるところで、ヒバリが起き上がり、歌い、空に向かって真っ直ぐに飛び立っていた。
The wind was blowing warmer, but Laura was cold.	風は暖かく吹いていたが、ローラは寒かった。

Suddenly Ma jumped up and seized the handle of the windlass.	突然ママは飛び上がって、巻き上げ機のハンドルをつかんだ。
She tugged at it with all her might.	彼女はそれを全力で引っ張った。
The rope strained and the windlass creaked.	ロープが張り、巻き上げ機がきしんだ。
Laura thought that Pa had keeled over, down in the dark bottom of the well, and Ma couldn’t pull him up.	ローラは、パパが井戸の暗い底でひっくり返り、ママが彼を引き上げることができないと思った。
But the windlass turned a little, and then a little more.	しかし、巻き上げ機は少し回り、それからもう少し回った。

Pa’s hand came up, holding to the rope.	パパの手がロープを握って上がってきた。

She came hurrying back, lugging the pail of water.	彼女は水の入ったバケツを引きずって急いで戻ってきた。
Pa and Ma were both turning the windlass.	パパとママは二人とも巻き上げ機を回していた。
The rope slowly wound itself up, and the bucket came up out of the well, and tied to the bucket and the rope was Mr. Scott.	ロープはゆっくりと巻き上げられ、バケツが井戸から出てきて、バケツとロープにスコットさんが縛り付けられていた。
His arms and his legs and his head hung and wobbled, his mouth was partly open and his eyes half shut.	彼の腕と脚と頭はぶら下がって揺れ、口は半分開き、目は半分閉じていた。

Pa tugged him onto the grass.	パパは彼を草の上に引っ張り出した。
Pa rolled him over and he flopped where he was rolled.	パパは彼を転がしたが、彼は転がされたところでぐったりしていた。
Pa felt his wrist and listened at his chest, and then Pa lay down beside him.	パパは彼の手首を触り、胸に耳を当ててから、彼の横に横になった。

“He’s breathing,” Pa said.	「彼は息をしている」とパパは言った。

She covered her face with her apron and burst out crying.	彼女はエプロンで顔を覆い、泣き出した。

That was a terrible day.

それはひどい日だった。

“I don’t want a well,” Ma sobbed.	「井戸なんていらないよ」とママはすすり泣いた。
“It isn’t worth it.	「そんな価値はないよ。
I won’t have you running such risks!”	あなたにそんな危険を冒してほしくないの!」

Mr. Scott had breathed a kind of gas that stays deep in the ground.	スコットさんは地中深くにあるガスを吸い込んでしまったのだ。
It stays at the bottom of wells because it is heavier than the air.	それは空気より重いので井戸の底にたまる。
It cannot be seen or smelled, but no one can breathe it very long and live.	それは見えないし匂いもしないが、誰もそれを長く吸い込んで生きることはできない。
Pa had gone down into that gas to tie Mr. Scott to the rope, so that he could be pulled up out of the gas.	パパはスコットさんをロープに縛り付けるためにそのガスの中へ降りて行き、そうして彼をガスの中から引き上げることができた。

When Mr. Scott was able, he went home.	スコットさんは元気になって、家に帰った。
Before he went he said to Pa: “You were right about that candle business, Ingalls.	彼は帰る前にパパに言った。「インガルス、君はあのろうそくのことについては正しかった。
I thought it was all foolishness and I would not bother with it, but I’ve found out my mistake.”	私はそれが全く馬鹿げたことだと思い、気にしなかったが、自分の間違いに気づいた。」

“Well,” said Pa, “where a light can’t live, I know I can’t.	「そう」とパパは言った。「火が生きられないところでは、私も生きられない。

Pa rested awhile.	パパはしばらく休んだ。

“Come along, Laura,” he said, “and I’ll show you something.”

In a minute they heard a muffled bang!	すぐに彼らはくぐもった音を聞いた。

In the mornings when the candle went down, it lighted oozing-wet walls, and candlelight sparkled in rings over the water when the bucket struck bottom.	朝、ろうそくが下ろされると、それは水がにじみ出る壁を照らし、バケツが底にぶつかると、ろうそくの光が水の上に輪になってきらめいた。

Pa stood knee deep in water and bailed out bucketfuls before he could begin digging in the mud.

One day when he was digging, a loud shout came echoing up.	ある日、彼が掘っていると、大きな叫び声が響き渡った。

A swishing, gurgling sound echoed down there.	シャーッという音が下の方から響いてきた。
Mr. Scott turned the windlass as fast as he could, and Pa came up climbing hand over hand up the rope.	スコットさんはできるだけ早く巻き上げ機を回し、パパはロープを手で登ってきた。

“I’m blamed if that’s not quicksand!” Pa gasped, as he stepped onto the ground, muddy and dripping.	「あれが流砂でなかったら私が悪い!」パパは泥だらけで水滴を滴らせながら地面に足を踏み出しながら息を切らした。
“I was pushing down hard on the spade, when all of a sudden it went down, the whole length of the handle.	「私がシャベルを強く押し下げていたら、突然柄の長さ全部が下がったんだ。
And water came pouring up all around me.”	そして水が私の周りから湧き出てきたんだ。」

“A good six feet of this rope’s wet,” Mr. Scott said, winding it up.	「このロープの6フィートは濡れている」とスコットさんは巻き上げながら言った。
The bucket was full of water.	バケツは水でいっぱいだった。
“You showed sense in getting out of that hand over hand, Ingalls.	「インガルス、手で登って抜け出したのは賢かった。
That water came up faster than I could pull you out.”	あの水は私が君を引き上げられるよりも速く上がってきた。」
Then Mr. Scott slapped his thigh and shouted, “I’m blasted if you didn’t bring up the spade!”	それからスコットさんは太ももを叩いて叫んだ。「君がスペードを持ち上げなかったら私は爆発していたよ!」

Sure enough, Pa had saved his spade.

In a little while the well was almost full of water.	しばらくすると井戸はほとんど水でいっぱいになった。
A circle of blue sky lay not far down in the ground, and when Laura looked at it, a little girl’s head looked up at her.	青い空の円が地面のあまり深くないところに横たわっていて、ローラがそれを見ると、小さな女の子の頭が彼女を見上げていた。
When she waved her hand, a hand on the water’s surface waved, too.	彼女が手を振ると、水面の手もまた振った。

He built a solid platform over the well, and a heavy cover for the hole that let the water-bucket through.	彼は井戸の上に頑丈な台を作り、水桶を通す穴に重い蓋をした。
Laura must never touch that cover.	ローラはその蓋に絶対に触れてはいけない。
