Chapter 11: INDIANS IN THE HOUSE

第11章: 家にいるインディアン

Early one morning Pa took his gun and went hunting.

ある朝早く、パパは銃を持って狩りに出かけた。

He had meant to make the bedstead that day.	パパはその日、ベッドの枠を作るつもりだった。
He had brought in the slabs, when Ma said she had no meat for dinner.	パパが厚板を運び込んだ時、ママは夕食に肉がないと言った。
So he stood the slabs against the wall and took down his gun.	それでパパは厚板を壁に立てかけ、銃を取り出した。

Jack wanted to go hunting, too.	ジャックも狩りに行きたかった。
His eyes begged Pa to take him, and whines came up from his chest and quivered in his throat till Laura almost cried with him.	ジャックはパパに連れて行ってくれと目で訴え、胸から悲鳴を上げ、喉を震わせたので、ローラは彼と一緒に泣きそうになった。
But Pa chained him to the stable.	しかし、パパは彼を馬小屋に鎖でつないだ。

“No, Jack,” Pa said.	「だめだ、ジャック」とパパは言った。
“You must stay here and guard the place.”	「ここに残って、家を守らなければならない。」
Then he said to Mary and Laura, “Don’t let him loose, girls.”	それから、メアリーとローラに「彼を放さないように」と言った。

Poor Jack lay down.	かわいそうなジャックは横になった。
It was a disgrace to be chained, and he felt it deeply.	鎖につながれるのは恥ずかしいことであり、彼はそれを深く感じていた。
He turned his head from Pa and would not watch him going away with the gun on his shoulder.	彼はパパから顔を背け、パパが銃を肩にかけて出かけていくのを見ようとしなかった。
Pa went farther and farther away, till the prairies swallowed him and he was gone.	パパはどんどん遠ざかり、ついに大草原に飲み込まれて見えなくなった。

Laura tried to comfort Jack, but he would not be comforted.	ローラはジャックを慰めようとしたが、彼は慰めようとしなかった。
The more he thought about the chain, the worse he felt.	鎖のことを考えれば考えるほど、彼は気分が悪くなった。
Laura tried to cheer him up to frisk and play, but he only grew more sullen.	ローラは彼を元気づけて遊びに誘おうとしたが、彼はますます不機嫌になった。

Both Mary and Laura felt that they could not leave Jack while he was so unhappy.	メアリーとローラは、ジャックがそんなに不幸な時に彼を置いていけないと感じていた。
So all that morning they stayed by the stable.	だから、その朝はずっと馬小屋のそばにいた。
They stroked Jack’s smooth, brindled head and scratched around his ears, and told him how sorry they were that he must be chained.	彼女たちはジャックのなめらかな虎毛の頭を撫で、耳の周りを掻き、鎖につながれなくてはならないことをどれほど気の毒に思っているかを彼に話した。

The hair on his neck stood straight up and his eyes glared red.	首の毛が逆立ち、目が赤く光った。

Then she looked over her shoulder, where Jack was looking, and she saw two naked, wild men coming, one behind the other, on the Indian trail.	それから彼女はジャックが見ている方へ肩越しに振り返り、インディアンの道を2人の裸の野生の男が前後に並んでやってくるのを見かけた。

“Mary! Look!” she cried.	「メアリー! 見て!」と彼女は叫んだ。
Mary looked and saw them, too.	メアリーも見て、彼らを見た。

They were tall, thin, fierce-looking men.	彼らは背が高く、痩せていて、恐ろしい顔つきの男たちだった。
Their skin was brownish-red.	彼らの肌は赤褐色だった。
Their heads seemed to go up to a peak, and the peak was a tuft of hair that stood straight up and ended in feathers.	彼らの頭は頂上まで上がっているように見え、頂上は真っ直ぐに立って羽で終わる髪の房だった。
Their eyes were black and still and glittering, like snake’s eyes.	彼らの目は黒く、蛇の目のようにじっと輝いていた。

They came closer and closer.	彼らはどんどん近づいてきた。
Then they went out of sight, on the other side of the house.	それから彼らは家の反対側に行き、見えなくなった。

Laura’s head turned and so did Mary’s, and they looked at the place where those terrible men would appear when they came past the house.

ローラは振り返り、メアリーも振り返り、二人は恐ろしい男たちが家の前を通り過ぎたら現れる場所を見た。

“Indians!” Mary whispered.	「インディアンだ!」とメアリーはささやいた。
Laura was shivery; there was a queer feeling in her middle and the bones in her legs felt weak.	ローラは震え、体の真ん中に奇妙な感覚があり、足の骨が弱く感じられた。
She wanted to sit down.	彼女は座りたかった。
But she stood and looked and waited for those Indians to come out from beyond the house.	しかし、彼女は立って、インディアンが家の向こうから出てくるのを待ち続けた。
The Indians did not do that.	インディアンはそうしなかった。

All this time Jack had been growling.	この間ずっとジャックは唸っていた。
Now he stopped growling and was lunging against the chain.	彼は唸るのをやめて、鎖に飛びかかった。
His eyes were red and his lips curled back and all the hair on his back was bristling.	彼の目は赤く、唇は後ろにめくれ、背中の毛は逆立っていた。
He bounded and bounded, clear off the ground, trying to get loose from the chain.	彼は鎖から逃れようとして、地面から離れて跳びはねた。
Laura was glad that the chain kept him right there with her.	ローラは鎖が彼を彼女のすぐそばに留めてくれたことを嬉しく思った。

“Jack’s here,” she whispered to Mary.	「ジャックが来た」と彼女はメアリーにささやいた。
“Jack won’t let them hurt us.	「ジャックは彼らに私たちを傷つけさせないよ。
We’ll be safe if we stay close to Jack.”	ジャックの近くにいれば安全よ。」

“They are in the house,” Mary whispered.	「彼らは家の中にいる」とメアリーはささやいた。
“They are in the house with Ma and Carrie.”	「彼らはママとキャリーと一緒に家の中にいる」

Then Laura began to shake all over.	するとローラは全身を震わせ始めた。
She knew she must do something.	彼女は何かをしなければならないと分かっていた。
She did not know what those Indians were doing to Ma and Baby Carrie.	彼女はインディアンがママと赤ん坊のキャリーに何をしているのか分からなかった。
There was no sound at all from the house.	家からは全く音がしなかった。

“Oh, what are they doing to Ma!” she screamed, in a whisper.

「ああ、彼らはママに何をしているの!」彼女はささやき声で叫んだ。

“Oh, I don’t know!” Mary whispered.

「ああ、分からないよ!」メアリーはささやいた。

“I’m going to let Jack loose,” Laura whispered, hoarsely.	「ジャックを放すよ」ローラはかすれた声でささやいた。
“Jack will kill them.”	「ジャックが彼らを殺すよ」

“Pa said not to,” Mary answered.	「パパはそうしちゃいけないって言ったよ」メアリーは答えた。
They were too scared to speak out loud.	彼らは怖くて大声で話せなかった。
They put their heads together and watched the house and whispered.	彼らは頭を寄せ合って家を眺めながらささやき合った。

“He didn’t know Indians would come,” Laura said.

「パパはインディアンが来ることなんて知らなかったのよ」ローラは言った。

“He said not to let Jack loose.”	「パパはジャックを放さないように言ったよ」
Mary was almost crying.	メアリーは泣きそうだった。

Laura thought of little Baby Carrie and Ma, shut in the house with those Indians.	ローラは赤ん坊のキャリーとママがインディアンと一緒に家の中に閉じ込められていることを思った。
She said, “I’m going in to help Ma!”	彼女は「ママを助けに行くよ!」と言った。

She ran two steps, and walked a step, then she turned and flew back to Jack.	彼女は2歩走り、1歩歩き、それから振り返ってジャックの元へ飛んで行った。
She clutched him wildly and hung on to his strong, panting neck.	彼女は彼を激しくつかみ、彼の強く、息を切らした首につかまった。
Jack wouldn’t let anything hurt her.	ジャックは彼女を傷つけるものは何も許さないだろう。

“We mustn’t leave Ma in there alone,” Mary whispered.	「ママを一人にしてはいけないよ」とメアリーはささやいた。

Laura hid her face against Jack and held on to him tightly.

Then she made her arms let go.	それから彼女は腕を離した。
Her hands balled into fists and her eyes shut tight and she ran toward the house as fast as she could run.	彼女は手を握りしめ、目をぎゅっと閉じて、できるだけ速く家に向かって走った。

She stumbled and fell down and her eyes popped open.	彼女はつまずいて転び、目が飛び出した。

The naked wild men stood by the fireplace.	裸の野生の男たちが暖炉のそばに立っていた。
Ma was bending over the fire, cooking something.	ママは火の上に身をかがめて何かを料理していた。
Carrie clung to Ma’s skirts with both hands and her head was hidden in the folds.	キャリーは両手でママのスカーにしがみつき、頭をひだの中に隠していた。

Laura ran toward Ma, but just as she reached the hearth she smelled a horribly bad smell and she looked up at the Indians.	ローラはママに向かって走ったが、暖炉にたどり着いたちょうどその時、ひどく嫌な臭いがして、インディアンを見た。
Quick as a flash, she ducked behind the long, narrow slab that leaned against the wall.	彼女は素早く、壁にもたれかかった長くて狭い板の陰に隠れた。

The slab was just wide enough to cover both her eyes.	その板は彼女の両目を隠すのに十分な幅だった。
If she held her head perfectly still and pressed her nose against the slab, she couldn’t see the Indians.	彼女が頭を完全に動かさず、鼻を板に押し付ければ、インディアンは見えなかった。
And she felt safer.	そして彼女はより安全だと感じた。
But she couldn’t help moving her head just a little, so that one eye peeped out and she could see the wild men.	しかし、彼女は頭を少し動かすのを我慢できず、片方の目が覗き、野生の男たちを見ることができた。

First she saw their leather moccasins.	最初に彼女は彼らの革のモカシンを見た。

A knife like Pa’s hunting-knife, and a hatchet like Pa’s hatchet, were stuck into each skunk skin.

The Indians’ ribs made little ridges up their bare sides.	インディアンの肋骨は、むき出しの脇腹に小さな隆起を作っている。
Their arms were folded on their chests.	彼らの腕は胸の上で組まれていた。
At last Laura looked again at their faces, and she dodged quickly behind the slab.	ついにローラは彼らの顔をもう一度見て、石板の背後に素早く身を隠した。

Their faces were bold and fierce and terrible.	彼らの顔は大胆で、荒々しく、恐ろしかった。
Their black eyes glittered.	彼らの黒い目はきらめいていた。
High on their foreheads and above their ears where hair grows, these wild men had no hair.	額の上の方や耳の上の髪の毛が生えるところに、この野生の男たちは髪の毛がなかった。
But on top of their heads a tuft of hair stood straight up.	しかし、頭のてっぺんには髪の毛の房がまっすぐ立っていた。
It was wound around with string, and feathers were stuck in it.	それは紐で巻かれ、羽が刺さっていた。

When Laura peeked out from behind the slab again, both Indians were looking straight at her.	ローラが再び石板の後ろから覗くと、二人のインディアンは彼女をまっすぐ見ていた。
Her heart jumped into her throat and choked her with its pounding.	彼女の心臓は喉に飛び込み、ドキドキして息が詰まった。
Two black eyes glittered down into her eyes.	二つの黒い目が彼女の目を覗き込んだ。
The Indian did not move, not one muscle of his face moved.	インディアンは動かず、顔の筋肉も動かなかった。
Only his eyes shone and sparkled at her.	彼の目だけが彼女を見つめて輝いていた。
Laura didn’t move, either.	ローラも動かなかった。
She didn’t even breathe.	彼女は息もしなかった。

The Indian made two short, harsh sounds in his throat.	インディアンは喉で短く、耳障りな音を二回立てた。
The other Indian made one sound, like “Hah!”	もう一人のインディアンは「ハッ!」のような音を一つ立てた。
Laura hid her eyes behind the slab again.	ローラは再び板の陰に目を隠した。

She heard Ma take the cover off the bake-oven.	彼女はママがオーブンの蓋を外す音を聞いた。
She heard the Indians squat down on the hearth.	彼女はインディアンが炉辺にしゃがみ込む音を聞いた。
After a while she heard them eating.	しばらくすると、彼女は彼らが食べている音を聞いた。

Laura peeked, and hid, and peeked again, while the Indians ate the cornbread that Ma had baked.	インディアンがママが焼いたコーンブレッドを食べている間、ローラは覗き、隠れ、また覗いた。
They ate every morsel of it, and even picked up the crumbs from the hearth.	彼らはそれを残さず食べ、炉辺からパンくずを拾い集めた。
Ma stood and watched them and stroked Baby Carrie’s head.	ママは立って彼らを見守り、赤ん坊のキャリーの頭を撫でた。
Mary stood close behind Ma and held on to her sleeve.	メアリーはママのすぐ後ろに立って、彼女の袖をつかんだ。

Faintly Laura heard Jack’s chain rattling.	ローラはかすかにジャックの鎖がガチャガチャ鳴るのを聞いた。
Jack was still trying to get loose.	ジャックはまだ逃げようとしていた。

When every crumb of the cornbread was gone, the Indians rose up.	コーンブレッドのかけらがすべてなくなると、インディアンたちは立ち上がった。
The skunk smell was stronger when they moved.	彼らが動くとスカンクの臭いが強くなった。
One of them made harsh sounds in his throat again.	彼らの1人がまた喉で耳障りな音を出した。
Ma looked at him with big eyes;	ママは目を大きくして彼を見た。
she did not say anything.	彼女は何も言わなかった。
The Indian turned around, the other Indian turned, too, and they walked across the floor and out through the door.	インディアンは振り返り、もう1人のインディアンも振り返り、彼らは床を横切って歩き、ドアから出て行った。
Their feet made no sound at all.	彼らの足は全く音を立てなかった。

Ma sighed a long, long sigh.	ママは長い長いため息をついた。
She hugged Laura tight in one arm and Mary tight in the other arm, and through the window they watched those Indians going away, one behind the other, on the dim trail toward the west.	彼女は片方の腕でローラをぎゅっと抱きしめ、もう片方の腕でメアリーをぎゅっと抱きしめて、窓からインディアンが西に向かう薄暗い道を1列になって去っていくのを見送った。
Then Ma sat down on the bed and hugged Laura and Mary tighter, and trembled.	それからママはベッドに腰を下ろし、ローラとメアリーをもっと強く抱きしめて震えた。
She looked sick.	彼女は病気のように見えた。

“Do you feel sick, Ma?” Mary asked her.

「気分が悪いの、ママ?」とメアリーは彼女に尋ねた。

“No,” said Ma.	「いいえ」とママは言った。
“I’m just thankful they’re gone.”	「彼らがいなくなってくれたことに感謝しているだけよ」

Laura wrinkled her nose and said, “They smell awful.”

ローラは鼻にしわを寄せて「ひどい臭いがする」と言った。

“That was the skunk skins they wore,” Ma said.

「それは彼らが着ていたスカンクの皮よ」とママは言った。

Then they told her how they had left Jack and had come into the house because they were afraid the Indians would hurt her and Baby Carrie.	それから、インディアンがローラと赤ん坊のキャリーを傷つけるのではないかと心配して、ジャックを置いて家に入ってきた経緯を話した。
Ma said they were her brave little girls.	ママは、二人は勇敢な小さな女の子だと言った。

“Now we must get dinner,” she said.	「さあ、夕食の支度をしましょう」とママは言った。
“Pa will be here soon and we must have dinner ready for him.	「パパがすぐに帰ってくるから、夕食の支度をしておきましょう。
Mary, bring me some wood.	メアリー、薪を持ってきなさい。
Laura, you may set the table.”	ローラ、テーブルをセットしてちょうだい」

Ma rolled up her sleeves and washed her hands and mixed cornbread, while Mary brought the wood and Laura set the table.	ママは袖をまくり、手を洗ってコーンブレッドを混ぜ、メアリーは薪を運び、ローラはテーブルをセットした。
She set a tin plate and knife and fork and cup for Pa, and the same for Ma, with Carrie’s little tin cup beside Ma’s.	彼女はパパのためにブリキの皿とナイフとフォークとカップをセットし、ママのためにも同じものをセットし、ママの横にキャリーの小さなブリキのカップも置いた。
And she set tin plates and knives and forks for her and Mary, but only their one cup between the plates.	そして彼女はメアリーと自分のためにブリキの皿とナイフとフォークをセットしたが、カップは2枚の皿の間に1つだけ置いた。

Ma made the cornmeal and water into two thin loaves, each shaped in a half circle.	ママはコーンミールと水を混ぜて、それぞれ半円形の薄いパンを2つ作った。
She laid the loaves with their straight sides together in the bake-oven, and she pressed her hand flat on top of each loaf.	彼女はパンを直線の側面を合わせてオーブンに入れ、それぞれのパンの上に手を平らに押し付けた。
Pa always said he did not ask any other sweetening, when Ma put the prints of her hands on the loaves.	パパはいつも、ママがパンに手の跡を残したときには、他の甘味料は求めないと言っていた。

Laura had hardly set the table when Pa was there.	ローラはパパがそこにいるときにはほとんどテーブルをセットしなかった。
He left a big rabbit and two prairie hens outside the door, and stepped in and laid his gun on its pegs.	彼は大きなウサギと2羽の草原の雌鳥をドアの外に置き、中に入って銃を掛けた。
Laura and Mary ran and clutched him, both talking at once.	ローラとメアリーは走って彼をつかみ、2人とも同時に話し始めた。

“What’s all this?	「これはいったい何だ?
What’s all this?” he said, rumpling their hair.	これはいったい何だ?」と彼は言い、2人の髪をくしゃくしゃにした。
“Indians? So you’ve seen Indians at last, have you, Laura?	「インディアン? ついにインディアンを見たのか、ローラ?

Did Indians come to the house, Caroline?”	インディアンは家に来たのか、キャロライン?」

“Yes, Charles, two of them,” Ma said.	「ええ、チャールズ、2人来たよ」とママは言った。
“I’m sorry, but they took all your tobacco, and they ate a lot of cornbread.	「ごめんなさい、でも彼らはあなたのタバコを全部持っていって、コーンブレッドをたくさん食べたよ。
They pointed to the cornmeal and made signs for me to cook some.	彼らはコーンミールを指さして、私に料理するように合図したのよ。
I was afraid not to.	怖くてそうしなかった。
Oh Charles! I was afraid!”	ああ、チャールズ! 怖かったよ!」

“You did the right thing,” Pa told her.	「君は正しいことをした」とパパは彼女に言った。
“We don’t want to make enemies of any Indians.”	「インディアンを敵に回したくない」
Then he said, “Whew! what a smell.”	それから彼は「うよ! なんて臭い」と言った。

“They wore fresh skunk skins,” said Ma.	「彼らは新鮮なスカンクの皮を着ていた」とママは言った。
“And that was all they wore.”	「そしてそれが彼らが着ていた全てだった」

“Must have been thick while they were here,” Pa said.

「彼らがここにいた間は濃かったに違いない」とパパは言った。

“It was, Charles.	「そうだったよ、チャールズ。
We were short of cornmeal, too.”	コーンミールも不足していたよ」

“Oh well. We have enough to hold out awhile yet.	「ああ、そうか。まだしばらくは持ちこたえられるだけの量はある。
And our meat is running all over the country.	そして、私たちの肉は国中に運ばれている。
Don’t worry, Caroline.”	心配するな、キャロライン」

“But they took all your tobacco.”

“Never mind,” Pa said.	「気にするな」とパパは言った。
“I’ll get along without tobacco till I can make that trip to Independence.	「インディペンデンスまで行けるまではタバコなしでやっていけるよ。
The main thing is to be on good terms with the Indians.	一番大事なのはインディアンと仲良くすることだ。
We don’t want to wake up some night with a band of the screeching dev—”	夜中に悪魔の叫び声で目を覚ましたくないからね」

He stopped.	パパは口をつぐんだ。
Laura dreadfully wanted to know what he had been going to say.	ローラはパパが何を言おうとしたのかとても知りたかった。
But Ma’s lips were pressed together and she shook a little shake of her head at Pa.	でもママは唇をぎゅっと閉じて、パパに向かって少し首を横に振った。

“Come on, Mary and Laura!” Pa said.	「メアリーとローラ、おいで!」とパパが言った。
“We’ll skin that rabbit and dress the prairie hens while that cornbread bakes.	「コーンブレッドが焼ける間に、ウサギの皮を剥いで、草原の雌鶏の下ごしらえをしよう。
Hurry! I’m hungry as a wolf!”	急げ! 狼のように腹が減った!」

They sat on the woodpile in the wind and sunshine and watched Pa work with his hunting-knife.	二人は風と日差しの中で薪の山に座って、パパが狩猟ナイフで作業するのを見た。
The big rabbit was shot through the eye, and the prairie hens’ heads were shot clean away.	大きなウサギは目を撃たれ、草原の雌鶏の頭はきれいに撃ち落とされていた。
They never knew what hit them, Pa said.	パパは、彼らは撃たれたことに気づかなかっただろうと言った。

Laura held the edge of the rabbit skin while Pa’s keen knife ripped it off the rabbit meat.	ローラはウサギの皮の端を持ち、パパの鋭いナイフがウサギの肉から皮を剥ぎ取った。
“I’ll salt this skin and peg it out on the house wall to dry,” he said.	「この皮に塩をつけて、家の壁にかけて乾かそう」と彼は言った。
“It will make a warm fur cap for some little girl to wear next winter.”	「来年の冬には、どこかの少女がかぶる暖かい毛皮の帽子になるだろう。」

But Laura could not forget the Indians.	しかし、ローラはインディアンのことが忘れられなかった。
She said to Pa that if they had turned Jack loose, he would have eaten those Indians right up.	彼女はパパに、もしジャックを放してやったら、あのインディアンをすぐに食べてしまっただろうと言った。

Pa laid down the knife.	パパはナイフを置いた。
“Did you girls even think of turning Jack loose?” he asked, in a dreadful voice.	「あなたたち、ジャックを放してやろうと思ったのか?」と彼は恐ろしい声で尋ねた。

Laura’s head bowed down and she whispered, “Yes, Pa.”

ローラは頭を垂れて、「はい、パパ」とささやいた。

“After I told you not to?” Pa said, in a more dreadful voice.

「私がそうするなと言ったのに?」パパはもっと恐ろしい声で言った。

Laura couldn’t speak, but Mary choked, “Yes, Pa.”

ローラは話せなかったが、メアリーは「はい、パパ」と言葉を詰まらせた。

For a moment Pa was silent.	パパはしばらく黙っていた。
He sighed a long sigh like Ma’s sigh after the Indians went away.	彼はインディアンが去った後ママがしたように長いため息をついた。

“After this,” he said, in a terrible voice, “you girls remember always to do as you’re told.	「これからは」と彼は恐ろしい声で言った、「あなたたちは言われた通りにすることを忘れるな。
Don’t you even think of disobeying me.	私に背こうなんて考えもするな。
Do you hear?”	聞こえたか?」

“Yes, Pa,” Laura and Mary whispered.

“Do you know what would have happened if you had turned Jack loose?” Pa asked.

「ジャックを放したらどうなるか分かるか?」パパは尋ねた。

“No, Pa,” they whispered.

「いいえ、パパ」二人はささやいた。

“He would have bitten those Indians,” said Pa.	「ジャックはインディアンを噛みついていただろう」パパは言った。
“Then there would have been trouble. Bad trouble.	「そうしたら面倒なことになっていただろう。ひどい面倒なことに。
Do you understand?”	わかるか?」

“Yes, Pa,” they said.	「はい、パパ」と二人は言った。
But they did not understand.	しかし、二人には理解できなかった。

“Would they have killed Jack?”	「ジャックを殺したでしょうか?」
Laura asked.	ローラは尋ねた。

“Yes. And that’s not all.	「そう。それだけじゃない。
You girls remember this: you do as you’re told, no matter what happens.”	娘たちよ、これを覚えておきなさい。何が起ころうとも、言われた通りに行動しなさい。」

“Yes, Pa,” Laura said, and Mary said, “Yes, Pa.”	「はい、パパ」とローラは言い、メアリーは「はい、パパ」と言った。
They were glad they had not turned Jack loose.	彼らはジャックを放さなかったことを喜んだ。

“Do as you’re told,” said Pa, “and no harm will come to you.”
