Chapter 7: THE WOLF-PACK

第7章: 狼の群れ

All in one day Pa and Mr. Edwards built the stable for Pet and Patty.	パパとエドワーズさんは、ペットとパティのために一日で馬小屋を建てた。
They even put the roof on, working so late that Ma had to keep supper waiting for them.	屋根までつけてしまい、遅くまで働いたので、ママは夕食を待たなければならなかった。

There was no stable door, but in the moonlight Pa drove two stout posts well into the ground, one on either side of the doorway.	馬小屋にはドアがなかったが、月明かりの下でパパは出入り口の両側に2本の頑丈な柱を地面に打ち込んだ。
He put Pet and Patty inside the stable, and then he laid small, split logs one above another, across the door space.	パパはペットとパティを馬小屋の中に入れ、それからドアの空間を横切って小さな割れた丸太を積み重ねた。
The posts held them, and they made a solid wall.	柱がそれらを支え、頑丈な壁になった。

“Now!” said Pa.	「さあ!」とパパは言った。
“Let those wolves howl!	「狼に遠吠えさせてやれ!
I’ll sleep, tonight.”	今夜は眠れるぞ。」

In the morning, when he lifted the split logs from behind the posts, Laura was amazed.	朝、パパが柱の後ろから割れた丸太を持ち上げた時、ローラは驚いた。
Beside Pet stood a long-legged, long-eared, wobbly little colt.	ペットの横に、足の長い、耳の長い、よろよろした小さな子馬が立っていた。

When Laura ran toward it, gentle Pet laid back her ears and snapped her teeth at Laura.

ローラが子馬に向かって走ると、優しいペットは耳を後ろに倒して、ローラに歯をむいた。

“Keep back, Laura!” Pa said, sharply.	「ローラ、下がれ!」パパは鋭く言った。
He said to Pet, “Now, Pet, you know we won’t hurt your little colt.”	パパはペットに言った、「ペット、あなたは私たちがあなたの子馬を傷つけないことを知っている。」
Pet answered him with a soft whinny.	ペットは柔らかいいななきで答えた。
She would let Pa stroke her colt, but she would not let Laura or Mary come near it.	ペットはパパに子馬を撫でさせてくれたが、ローラやメアリーには近寄らせなかった。
When they even peeked at it through the cracks in the stable wall, Pet rolled the whites of her eyes at them and showed them her teeth.	ローラやメアリーが馬小屋の壁の割れ目から覗き見ようとした時でさえ、ペットは彼女たちに白目を剥いて歯を見せた。
They had never seen a colt with ears so long.	ローラやメアリーはそんなに長い耳をした子馬を見たことがなかった。
Pa said it was a little mule, but Laura said it looked like a jack rabbit.	パパは小さなラバだと言ったが、ローラはウサギみたいだと言った。
So they named the little colt Bunny.	それで、ローラやメアリーは子馬にバニーという名前をつけた。

When Pet was on the picket-line, with Bunny frisking around her and wondering at the big world, Laura must watch Baby Carrie carefully.	ペットがピケットラインにいる時、バニーが彼女の周りを飛び跳ねて大きな世界に驚いている時、ローラは赤ん坊のキャリーを注意深く見守らなければならなかった。
If anyone but Pa came near Bunny, Pet squealed with rage and dashed to bite that little girl.	パパ以外の誰かがバニーに近づくと、ペットは怒りで悲鳴を上げ、その少女を噛みつこうと突進した。

Early that Sunday afternoon Pa rode Patty away across the prairie to see what he should see.	その日曜日の午後早く、パパはパティに乗って大草原を横切り、見るべきものを見に行った。
There was plenty of meat in the house, so he did not take his gun.	家には肉が十分にあったので、彼は銃を持って行かなかった。

He rode away through the tall grass, along the rim of the creek bluffs.	彼は小川の断崖の縁に沿って、背の高い草の中を馬で走り去った。
Birds flew up before him and circled and sank into the grasses.	鳥が彼の前を飛び、旋回して草の中に沈んだ。
Pa was looking down into the creek bottoms as he rode;	パパは馬に乗りながら小川の底を見下ろしていた。

Then Patty broke into a gallop, and swiftly she and Pa grew smaller.	それからパティはギャロップを始め、彼女とパパはすぐに小さくなった。
Soon there was only waving grass where they had been.	すぐに彼らがいた場所には揺れる草だけがあった。

Late that afternoon Pa had not come home.	その日の午後遅くになってもパパは帰って来なかった。
Ma stirred the coals of the fire and laid chips on them, and began to get supper.	ママは火の炭をかき混ぜて、その上に木片を置き、夕食の準備を始めた。
Mary was in the house, minding the baby, and Laura asked Ma, “What’s the matter with Jack?”	メアリーは家の中で赤ちゃんの世話をしていたので、ローラはママに「ジャックはどうしたの?」と尋ねた。

Jack was walking up and down, looking worried.	ジャックは心配そうに歩き回っていた。
He wrinkled his nose at the wind, and the hair rose up on his neck and lay down, and then rose up again.	彼は風に鼻にしわを寄せ、首の毛が逆立って寝て、また逆立った。
Pet’s hoofs suddenly thudded.	ペットのひづめが突然ドスンと鳴った。
She ran around the circle of her picket-rope and stood still, whickering a low whicker.	彼女はピケットロープの円を走り回り、低い声でいななきながらじっと立っていた。
Bunny came close to her.	バニーは彼女に近づいてきた。

“What’s the matter, Jack?” Ma asked.	「どうしたの、ジャック?」とママは尋ねた。
He looked up at her, but he couldn’t say anything.	彼は彼女を見上げたが、何も言うことができなかった。
Ma gazed around the whole circle of earth and sky.	ママは地球と空の円全体を見回した。
She could not see anything unusual.	彼女は何も異常なものを見ることができなかった。

“Likely it isn’t anything, Laura,” she said.	「おそらく何もないよ、ローラ」と彼女は言った。
She raked coals around the coffee-pot and the spider and onto the top of the bake-oven.	彼女はコーヒーポットとフライパンの周りとオーブンの上に石炭を掻き集めた。
The prairie hen sizzled in the spider and the corncakes began to smell good.	フライパンで草原の雌鳥がジュージューと音を立て、コーンケーキがいい匂いになった。

Jack walked about restlessly, and Pet did not graze.	ジャックは落ち着きなく歩き回り、ペットは草を食べなかった。
She faced the northwest, where Pa had gone, and kept her colt close beside her.	彼女はパパが行った北西を向き、子馬をすぐそばに置いた。

All at once Patty came running across the prairie.	突然、パティが草原を横切って走ってきた。
She was stretched out, running with all her might, and Pa was leaning almost flat on her neck.	彼女は体を伸ばして全力で走り、パパは彼女の首にほとんど平らになってもたれかかっていた。

She ran right past the stable before Pa could stop her.	彼女はパパが止められないうちに馬小屋を通り過ぎて走った。

But they could see only the space above the bottom lands, with a few tree-tops in it, and the distant tops of the earthen bluffs under the High Prairie’s grasses.	しかし、彼らには、底地の上の空間と、そこに見える数本の木のてっぺん、そしてハイプレーリーの草の下にある土の断崖の遠くのてっぺんしか見えなかった。

“What is it?” Ma asked again.	「何なの?」ママは再び尋ねた。

Pa breathed a long breath.	パパは長い息を吐いた。
“I was afraid the wolves would beat me here.	「狼が私より先にここに着くのではないかと心配だったんだ。
But I see everything’s all right.”	でも、何もかも大丈夫みたいだね。」

“Wolves!” she cried.	「狼!」と彼女は叫んだ。
“What wolves?”	「狼って?」

“Everything’s all right, Caroline,” said Pa.	「何もかも大丈夫だよ、キャロライン」とパパは言った。
“Let a fellow get his breath.”	「息をつかせてよ。」

When he had got some breath, he said, “I didn’t ride Patty like that.	彼は息を整えてから言った、「パティにはそんな乗り方はしなかった。
It was all I could do to hold her at all.	彼女を抑えておくのが精一杯だった。
Fifty wolves, Caroline, the biggest wolves I ever saw.	50匹のオオカミだ、キャロライン、今まで見た中で一番大きなオオカミだ。
I wouldn’t go through such a thing again, not for a mint of money.”	二度とこんなことは経験したくない、大金が手に入るとしても。」

A shadow came over the prairie just then because the sun had gone down, and Pa said, “I’ll tell you about it later.”

“We’ll eat supper in the house,” said Ma.

「夕食は家の中で食べましょう」とママは言った。

“No need of that,” he told her.	「そんな必要はない」と彼は彼女に言った。
“Jack will give us warning in plenty of time.”	「ジャックが十分な時間内に警告してくれるだろう。」

He brought Pet and her colt from the picket-line.	彼はペットとその子馬をピケットラインから連れてきた。
He didn’t take them and Patty to drink from the creek, as he usually did.	彼はいつものように、彼らとパティを連れて小川で水を飲ませなかった。
He gave them the water in Ma’s washtub, which was standing full, ready for the washing next morning.	彼は彼らにママの洗濯桶の水を与えたが、それは翌朝の洗濯の準備が整っていっぱいになっていた。

The camp fire made a circle of light in the dark.	キャンプファイヤーが暗闇の中に光の輪を作った。
Laura and Mary stayed close to the fire, and kept Baby Carrie with them.	ローラとメアリーは火のそばにいて、赤ん坊のキャリーを連れていた。
They could feel the dark all around them, and they kept looking behind them at the place where the dark mixed with the edge of the firelight.	彼女たちは周囲の暗闇を感じることができ、暗闇が火の光の端と混ざり合う場所を後ろを振り返って見続けた。
Shadows moved there, as if they were alive.	影がまるで生きているかのように動いた。

Laura and Mary ate their corncakes and the prairie hen’s drumsticks, and they listened to Pa while he told Ma about the wolves.

Their name was Scott, and Pa said they were nice folks.	彼らの名前はスコットで、パパは彼らはいい人たちだと言った。
Six miles beyond them, two bachelors were living in one house.	彼らから6マイル先に、2人の独身男性が1つの家に住んでいた。
They had taken two farms, and built the house on the line between them.	彼らは2つの農場を取得し、その間の境界線上に家を建てた。
One man’s bunk was against one wall of the house, and the other man’s bunk was against the other wall.	1人の男の寝台は家の片方の壁に接し、もう1人の男の寝台は反対側の壁に接していた。

Then he rode on, and from a little rise in the prairie he saw a white speck down in the creek bottoms.	それからパパは馬を走らせ、草原の少し高くなったところから小川の底に白い点が見えた。

They had come from Iowa, and they had camped in the bottoms because one of their horses was sick.	彼らはアイオワから来ていて、馬の1頭が病気だったので、谷底にキャンプしていた。
The horse was better now, but the bad night air so near the creek had given them fever’n’ague.	馬は良くなったが、小川に近い夜の悪い空気が彼らに熱病を与えていた。

One thing had led to another, until Pa was starting home later than he had meant.	パパが家を出発するまで、次から次へと用事が重なった。
He took a short cut across the prairie, and as he was loping along on Patty, suddenly out of a little draw came a pack of wolves.	パパは草原を横切る近道をとり、パティに乗って走っていると、突然小さな谷から狼の群れが現れた。
They were all around Pa in a moment.	狼たちはすぐにパパの周りを取り囲んだ。

“It was a big pack,” Pa said.	「大きな群れだった」とパパは言った。
“All of fifty wolves, and the biggest wolves I ever saw in my life.	「50匹の狼がいて、私の人生で見た中で一番大きな狼だった。
Must be what they call buffalo wolves.	バッファローウルフと呼ばれる狼に違いない。
Their leader’s a big gray brute that stands three feet at the shoulder, if an inch.	リーダーは大きな灰色の狼で、肩の高さが3フィートもある。
I tell you my hair stood straight on end.”	髪の毛が逆立ったよ」

“And you didn’t have your gun,” said Ma.

「銃も持っていなかったんでしょ」とママは言った。

“I thought of that.	「それも考えた。
But my gun would have been no use if I’d had it.	でも銃を持っていても役に立たなかっただろう。
You can’t fight fifty wolves with one gun.	銃一丁で50匹のオオカミと戦うことはできない。
And Patty couldn’t outrun them.”	それにパティは彼らより速く走れない。」

“What did you do?” Ma asked.

「どうしたの?」とママが尋ねた。

“Nothing,” said Pa.	「何も」とパパは言った。
“Patty tried to run.	「パティは走ろうとした。
I never wanted anything worse than I wanted to get away from there.	私はそこを離れたいと思った以上にひどいことを望んだことはなかった。
But I knew if Patty even started, those wolves would be on us in a minute, pulling us down.	しかし、パティが走り始めれば、狼はすぐに私たちに襲い掛かり、私たちを引きずり倒すだろうとわかっていた。
So I held Patty to a walk.”	だから私はパティを歩かせた。」

“Goodness, Charles!” Ma said under her breath.

Caroline, I never saw such wolves.	キャロライン、あんな狼は見たことがない。
One big fellow trotted along, right by my stirrup.	一匹の大きなやつが私のあぶみのすぐそばを小走りしていた。
I could have kicked him in the ribs.	肋骨を蹴り飛ばしてやろうかと思った。
They didn’t pay any attention to me at all.	狼たちは私には全く注意を払わなかった。
They must have just made a kill and eaten all they could.	狼たちは獲物を仕留めて、食べられるだけ食べたに違いない。

“I tell you, Caroline, those wolves just closed in around Patty and me and trotted along with us.	「本当だよ、キャロライン、狼たちはパティと私の周りに近づいてきて、一緒に小走りしていたんだ。
In broad daylight.	白昼堂々。
For all the world like a pack of dogs going along with a horse.	まるで犬の群れが馬と一緒に歩いているみたいだった。
They were all around us, trotting along, and jumping and playing and snapping at each other, just like dogs.”	狼たちは私たちの周りを小走りしたり、飛び跳ねたり、遊んだり、犬のように互いに噛み付いたりしていたんだ。」

“Goodness, Charles!” Ma said again.	「まあ、チャールズ!」ママはまた言った。
Laura’s heart was thumping fast, and her mouth and her eyes were wide open, staring at Pa.	ローラの心臓はドキドキと速く打ち、口と目は大きく開いてパパを見つめていた。

“Patty was shaking all over, and fighting the bit,” said Pa.	「パティは全身を震わせて、くつわと戦っていた」とパパは言った。
“Sweat ran off her, she was so scared.	「彼女は汗を流し、とても怖がっていた。
I was sweating, too.	私も汗を流していた。
But I held her down to a walk, and we went walking along among those wolves.	しかし、私は彼女を歩かせ、私たちは狼の中を歩いていった。
They came right along with us, a quarter of a mile or more.	彼らは私たちと一緒に4分の1マイル以上もついてきた。

But Pet and the colt were outside.”	でもペットと子馬は外にいた。」

“You need not have worried, Charles,” Ma said.	「心配する必要はなかったのよ、チャールズ」とママは言った。
“I guess I would manage to save our horses.”	「私はなんとか馬を守れたと思うよ。」

“I was not fully reasonable, at the time,” said Pa.	「その時は、私は完全に理性的ではなかった」とパパは言った。
“I know you would save the horses, Caroline.	「君が馬を守ってくれるのは分かっているよ、キャロライン。
Those wolves wouldn’t bother you, anyway.	いずれにせよ、あの狼たちは君を困らせないだろう。
If they had been hungry, I wouldn’t be here to——”	もし彼らが空腹だったら、私はここにいないだろう」

“Little pitchers have big ears,” Ma said.	「小さなつぼには大きな耳がある」とママは言った。
She meant that he must not frighten Mary and Laura.	彼女は、彼がメアリーとローラを怖がらせてはいけないという意味だった。

“Well, all’s well that ends well,” Pa replied.	「まあ、終わりよければ全てよしだ」とパパは答えた。
“And those wolves are miles from here by now.”	「そして、あの狼たちは今頃ここから何マイルも離れている」

“What made them act like that?”	「何が彼らをあんなにさせたの?」
Laura asked him.	ローラは彼に尋ねた。

“I don’t know, Laura,” he said.	「わからないよ、ローラ」と彼は言った。
“I guess they had just eaten all they could hold, and they were on their way to the creek to get a drink.	「彼らはちょうど食べられるだけ食べて、水を飲みに小川に向かう途中だったんだと思う。
Or perhaps they were out playing on the prairie, and not paying any attention to anything but their play, like little girls do sometimes.	あるいは、彼らは草原で遊んでいて、小さな女の子が時々するように、遊び以外には何も注意を払っていなかったのかもしれない。

“Bedtime for little girls!” Ma said, cheerfully.	「小さな女の子は寝る時間よ!」とママは元気よく言った。

She told Mary and Laura to go to bed, and she put Baby Carrie’s little nightgown on and laid her in the big bed.	ママはメアリーとローラに寝るように言い、赤ん坊のキャリーに小さなネグリジェを着せて大きなベッドに寝かせた。
Then she went outdoors to do the dishes.	それからママは食器を洗うために外に出た。
Laura wanted Pa and Ma in the house.	ローラはパパとママが家の中にいてほしいと思った。
They seemed so far away outside.	外にいるパパとママはとても遠くにいるように思えた。

Mary and Laura were good and lay still, but Carrie sat up and played by herself in the dark.	メアリーとローラはいい子でじっと寝ていたが、キャリーは起き上がって暗闇の中で一人で遊んでいた。
In the dark Pa’s arm came from behind the quilt in the doorway and quietly took away his gun.	暗闇の中でパパの腕が戸口のキルトの後ろから出てきて、静かに銃を取り上げた。
Out by the camp fire the tin plates rattled.	キャンプファイヤーのそばでブリキの皿がガタガタと音を立てた。
Then a knife scraped the spider.	それからナイフがクモをこすった。
Ma and Pa were talking together and Laura smelled tobacco smoke.	ママとパパは一緒に話していて、ローラはタバコの煙の匂いがした。
