INTRODUCTION 序文

Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. 民話、伝説、神話、おとぎ話は、時代を超えて子供時代を彩ってきた。なぜなら、健全な子供は誰でも、空想的で、驚異的で、明らかに非現実的な物語を健全に本能的に愛するからである。

The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations. グリムやアンデルセンの翼のある妖精は、他のどんな人間の創作物よりも子供の心に多くの幸せをもたらした。

Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as “historical” in the children’s library; しかし、何世代にもわたって語り継がれてきた昔ながらのおとぎ話は、今では児童図書館で「歴史的」なものに分類されるかもしれない。

for the time has come for a series of newer “wonder tales” in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. なぜなら、一連の新しい「不思議な物語」の時代が到来したからである。その物語では、型にはまった魔神、小人、妖精は排除され、それぞれの物語に恐ろしい教訓を与えるために作者が考案した恐ろしく血も凍るような事件もすべて排除されている。

therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident. そのため、現代の子供は不思議な物語の中で娯楽だけを求め、不快な事件はすべて喜んで省く。

Having this thought in mind, the story of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was written solely to please children of to-day. このような考えを念頭に置いて、「オズの魔法使い」の物語は、今日の子供たちを喜ばせるためだけに書かれた。

It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out. それは、驚きと喜びは残し、心の痛みや悪夢は取り除いた、現代化されたおとぎ話になることを目指している。
