 The Principles of Newspeak
ニュースピークの原理

Newspeak was the official language of Oceania and had been devised to meet the ideological needs of Ingsoc, or English Socialism.
ニュースピークはオセアニアの公用語であり、イングソック、つまりイギリス社会主義の思想的必要を満たすために考案された。
In the year 1984 there was not as yet anyone who used Newspeak as his sole means of communication, either in speech or writing.
1984年には、まだニュースピークを会話や文章で唯一のコミュニケーション手段として使っている人はいなかった。
The leading articles in “The Times” were written in it, but this was a TOUR DE FORCE which could only be carried out by a specialist.
be written in (書かれる) [動] be composed in a particular language
TOUR DE FORCE (離れ業) [名] a feat of strength, skill, or ingenuity
be carried out (行われる) [動] be performed or executed
タイムズ」紙の主要記事はニュースピークで書かれていたが、これは専門家だけにしかできない離れ業だった。
It was expected that Newspeak would have finally superseded Oldspeak (or Standard English, as we should call it) by about the year 2050.
ニュースピークがオールドスピーク(あるいは標準英語と呼ぶべきもの)を最終的に凌駕するのは2050年頃になると予想されていた。
Meanwhile it gained ground steadily, all Party members tending to use Newspeak words and grammatical constructions more and more in their everyday speech.
gain ground (地歩を固める) [動] make progress
steadily (着実に) [副] in a steady manner
その一方で、ニュースピークは着実に地歩を固め、党員は皆、日常会話の中でニュースピークの単語や文法構造をますます使うようになっていた。
The version in use in 1984, and embodied in the Ninth and Tenth Editions of the Newspeak Dictionary, was a provisional one, and contained many superfluous words and archaic formations which were due to be suppressed later.
embody (収録される) [動] give a concrete or definite form to
Ninth (第9) [形] the ordinal number of nine
Tenth (第10) [形] the ordinal number of ten
provisional (暫定的) [形] arranged or existing for the present, possibly to be changed later
formation (表現) [名] the way in which something is formed or arranged
due to (予定である) [形] because of
1984年に使用され、ニュースピーク辞典の第9版と第10版に収録されたバージョンは暫定的なものであり、後に削除される予定の余計な言葉や古風な表現が多く含まれていた。
It is with the final, perfected version, as embodied in the Eleventh Edition of the Dictionary, that we are concerned here.
perfected (完成した) [形] made perfect
concerned (説明する) [動] be about
ここでは、辞典の第11版に収録されている最終的な完成版について説明する。

The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible.
not only (だけではなく) [接] and also
provide (提供する) [動] make available for use; supply
medium (媒体) [名] a means of communication
devotee (信奉者) [名] a person who is very interested in and enthusiastic about something
ニュースピークの目的は、イングソックの信奉者にふさわしい世界観や精神習慣を表現する媒体を提供することだけではなく、他のすべての思考様式を不可能にすることだった。
It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought--that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc--should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words.
unthinkable (考えることができない) [形] too unlikely or undesirable to be considered a possibility
dependent (依存している) [形] relying on someone or something else for aid, support, or the like
ニュースピークが完全に採用され、オールドスピークが忘れ去られたとき、異端の思想、つまりイングソックの原則から逸脱した思想は、少なくとも思想が言葉に依存している限り、文字通り考えることができなくなることを意図していた。
Its vocabulary was so constructed as to give exact and often very subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could properly wish to express, while excluding all other meanings and also the possibility of arriving at them by indirect methods.
construct (構成する) [動] make or form by putting parts together
exact (正確な) [形] not deviating from truth or fact
properly (適切に) [副] in a proper manner
exclude (排除する) [動] shut or keep out
その語彙は、党員が適切に表現したいと思うあらゆる意味を正確に、そしてしばしば非常に微妙に表現できるように構成されていたが、他のすべての意味や間接的な方法でそれらに到達する可能性は排除されていた。
This was done partly by the invention of new words, but chiefly by eliminating undesirable words and by stripping such words as remained of unorthodox meanings, and so far as possible of all secondary meanings whatever.
strip (取り除く) [動] remove all coverings or layers from
secondary (二次的な) [形] less important than the main thing
これは、一部には新しい言葉の発明によって行われたが、主に望ましくない言葉を排除し、残った言葉から非正統的な意味を取り除き、可能な限りすべての二次的な意味を取り除くことによって行われた。
To give a single example.
give (挙げる) [動] provide or supply
一例を挙げると、
The word FREE still existed in Newspeak, but it could only be used in such statements as “This dog is free from lice” or “This field is free from weeds”.
exist (残る) [動] be or continue to be
such (などの) [形] of the type or kind described
dog (犬) [名] a domesticated carnivorous mammal that typically has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, and a barking, howling, or whining voice
louse (シラミ) [名] a small wingless jumping insect which feeds on the blood of mammals and birds
weed (雑草) [名] a wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants
ニュースピークには「自由」という言葉がまだ残っていたが、「この犬にはシラミがいない」「この畑には雑草がない」などの表現にしか使えなかった。
It could not be used in its old sense of “politically free” or “intellectually free” since political and intellectual freedom no longer existed even as concepts, and were therefore of necessity nameless.
politically (政治的に) [副] in a political manner
nameless (無名) [形] having no name
政治的自由や知的自由は概念としても存在しなくなったため、必然的に無名となったため、「政治的に自由」や「知的に自由」という古い意味では使えなくなった。
Quite apart from the suppression of definitely heretical words, reduction of vocabulary was regarded as an end in itself, and no word that could be dispensed with was allowed to survive.
quite apart from (とは別に) [副] in addition to; besides
suppression (抑圧) [名] the action of suppressing something
definitely (明らかに) [副] without doubt; certainly
dispense with (省略する) [動] do without
明らかに異端的な言葉の抑圧とは別に、語彙の削減はそれ自体が目的と見なされ、省略できる言葉は生き残ることができなかった。
Newspeak was designed not to extend but to DIMINISH the range of thought, and this purpose was indirectly assisted by cutting the choice of words down to a minimum.
diminish (狭める) [動] make or become smaller or less
assist (支援する) [動] help by sharing work or providing money, information, or other resources
choice (選択肢) [名] the right or ability to choose
ニュースピークは思考の範囲を広げるのではなく、狭めるように設計されており、この目的は言葉の選択肢を最小限に抑えることで間接的に支援されていた。

Newspeak was founded on the English language as we now know it, though many Newspeak sentences, even when not containing newly-created words, would be barely intelligible to an English-speaker of our own day.
be founded on (に基づいて作られる) [動] be based on
Newspeak sentence (ニュースピークの文) [名] a sentence in Newspeak
newly-created word (新しく作られた言葉) [名] a word that has been created recently
English-speaker (英語話者) [名] a person who speaks English
own day (現代) [名] the present time
ニュースピークは、私たちが現在知っているように英語に基づいて作られたが、多くのニュースピークの文は、新しく作られた言葉を含んでいなくても、現代の英語話者にはほとんど理解できないだろう。
Newspeak words were divided into three distinct classes, known as the A vocabulary, the B vocabulary (also called compound words), and the C vocabulary.
distinct (異なる) [形] not identical; different
class (クラス) [名] a group of people or things with similar characteristics
A vocabulary (A語彙) [名] the A vocabulary of Newspeak
B vocabulary (B語彙) [名] the B vocabulary of Newspeak
compound word (複合語) [名] a word formed by combining two or more words
C vocabulary (C語彙) [名] the C vocabulary of Newspeak
ニュースピークの言葉は、A語彙、B語彙(複合語とも呼ばれる)、C語彙と呼ばれる3つの異なるクラスに分けられていた。
It will be simpler to discuss each class separately, but the grammatical peculiarities of the language can be dealt with in the section devoted to the A vocabulary, since the same rules held good for all three categories.
separately (個別に) [副] not together
grammatical (文法的な) [形] of or relating to grammar
peculiarity (特異性) [名] a strange or unusual feature
section (セクション) [名] a part of a book, document, or piece of writing
category (カテゴリー) [名] a group of things that are similar in some way
各クラスを個別に議論する方が簡単だが、言語の文法的な特異性は、3つのカテゴリーすべてに同じルールが適用されるため、A語彙に特化したセクションで扱うことができる。

 THE A VOCABULARY.
A語彙。
The A vocabulary consisted of the words needed for the business of everyday life--for such things as eating, drinking, working, putting on one's clothes, going up and down stairs, riding in vehicles, gardening, cooking, and the like.
go up and down (上り下りする) [動] move from a lower to a higher position and back again
gardening (ガーデニング) [名] the activity of tending and cultivating a garden
A語彙は、食べる、飲む、働く、服を着る、階段を上り下りする、乗り物に乗る、ガーデニング、料理など、日常生活に必要な言葉で構成されていた。
It was composed almost entirely of words that we already possess words like HIT, RUN, DOG, TREE, SUGAR, HOUSE, FIELD--but in comparison with the present-day English vocabulary their number was extremely small, while their meanings were far more rigidly defined.
be composed of (で構成される) [動] be made up of
almost entirely (ほとんどすべて) [副] to a very great extent
HIT (HIT) [名] a blow that strikes something
RUN (RUN) [名] the act of moving at a faster than normal pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn, never having both feet off the ground at once
in comparison with (と比較して) [前] when compared to
defined (定義される) [動] state or describe exactly the nature, scope, or meaning of
それはほとんどすべて、私たちがすでに持っている言葉で構成されていた。HIT、RUN、DOG、TREE、SUGAR、HOUSE、FIELDなどだが、現在の英語の語彙と比較すると、その数は非常に少なく、その意味ははるかに厳密に定義されていた。
All ambiguities and shades of meaning had been purged out of them.
ambiguity (曖昧さ) [名] the quality of being open to more than one interpretation
purge (取り除く) [動] rid of impurities or unwanted elements
すべての曖昧さや意味合いは取り除かれていた。
So far as it could be achieved, a Newspeak word of this class was simply a staccato sound expressing ONE clearly understood concept.
be achieved (達成される) [動] reach or attain a goal or objective
staccato (スタッカート) [名] a style of playing music with each note sharply detached from the others
可能な限り、このクラスのニュースピークの言葉は、はっきりと理解された一つの概念を表現するスタッカート音に過ぎなかった。
It would have been quite impossible to use the A vocabulary for literary purposes or for political or philosophical discussion.
discussion (議論) [名] a conversation or debate about a particular topic
A語彙を文学的な目的や政治的、哲学的な議論に使用することは全く不可能だった。
It was intended only to express simple, purposive thoughts, usually involving concrete objects or physical actions.
purposive (目的のある) [形] having or showing a purpose
それは、通常は具体的な物体や物理的な行動を伴う、単純で目的のある考えを表現することだけを意図していた。

The grammar of Newspeak had two outstanding peculiarities.
grammar (文法) [名] the system of rules governing the structure of a language
outstanding (際立った) [形] of special excellence or importance
peculiarity (特徴) [名] a distinctive characteristic or quality
ニュースピークの文法には二つの際立った特徴があった。
The first of these was an almost complete interchangeability between different parts of speech.
first (一つ) [名] the first in a series
interchangeability (交換可能) [名] the quality of being able to be exchanged or interchanged
part of speech (品詞) [名] a category of words that have similar grammatical properties
その一つは、品詞の異なる部分の間でほぼ完全に交換可能であることだった。
Any word in the language (in principle this applied even to very abstract words such as IF or WHEN) could be used either as verb, noun, adjective, or adverb.
apply (当てはまる) [動] be pertinent or relevant
adverb (副詞) [名] a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a word group, expressing a relation of place, time, circumstance, manner, cause, degree, etc.
言語の中のどんな言葉でも(原則としてこれはIFやWHENのような非常に抽象的な言葉にも当てはまる)動詞、名詞、形容詞、副詞のいずれかとして使うことができた。
Between the verb and the noun form, when they were of the same root, there was never any variation, this rule of itself involving the destruction of many archaic forms.
動詞と名詞の形の間には、同じ語根である場合には、決して変化がなく、この規則自体が多くの古い形の破壊を伴っていた。
The word THOUGHT, for example, did not exist in Newspeak.
例えば、THOUGHTという言葉はニュースピークには存在しなかった。
Its place was taken by THINK, which did duty for both noun and verb.
take (使われる) [動] use, hold, or carry
do duty (役割を果たす) [動] perform a function
その代わりにTHINKが使われ、名詞と動詞の両方の役割を果たした。
No etymological principle was followed here: in some cases it was the original noun that was chosen for retention, in other cases the verb.
etymological (語源的な) [形] of or relating to etymology
ここでは語源的な原則は守られなかった。ある場合には元の名詞が残されるように選ばれ、他の場合には動詞が選ばれた。
Even where a noun and verb of kindred meaning were not etymologically connected, one or other of them was frequently suppressed.
kindred (似たような) [形] having a similar character
etymologically (語源的に) [副] in terms of etymology
connected (つながっている) [動] joined or linked together
suppressed (抑圧された) [動] forcibly put an end to
似たような意味の名詞と動詞が語源的につながっていない場合でさえ、どちらか一方がしばしば抑圧された。
There was, for example, no such word as CUT, its meaning being sufficiently covered by the noun-verb KNIFE.
CUT (CUT) [名] the act of cutting
cover (カバーする) [動] extend over the surface of
noun-verb (名詞動詞) [名] a word that can function as both a noun and a verb
KNIFE (KNIFE) [名] a cutting instrument with a blade and a handle
例えば、CUTという言葉は存在せず、その意味は名詞動詞のKNIFEで十分にカバーされていた。
Adjectives were formed by adding the suffix -FUL to the noun-verb, and adverbs by adding -WISE.
suffix (接尾辞) [名] a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to form a new word or to change the grammatical function of the original word
形容詞は名詞動詞に接尾辞-FULを加えることで形成され、副詞は-WISEを加えることで形成された。
Thus for example, SPEEDFUL meant “rapid” and SPEEDWISE meant “quickly”.
例えば、SPEEDFULは「速い」を意味し、SPEEDWISEは「素早く」を意味した。
Certain of our present-day adjectives, such as GOOD, STRONG, BIG, BLACK, SOFT, were retained, but their total number was very small.
certain (一部の) [形] some but not all
present-day (現代の) [形] of or relating to the present time
total (総) [形] complete; whole
GOOD、STRONG、BIG、BLACK、SOFTなど、現代の形容詞の一部は残されたが、その総数は非常に少なかった。
There was little need for them, since almost any adjectival meaning could be arrived at by adding -FUL to a noun-verb.
since (ため) [接] because
adjectival (形容詞の) [形] of or relating to an adjective
adding (加える) [動] join or combine with something else
名詞動詞に-FULを加えることでほとんどすべての形容詞の意味に到達できるため、それらの必要性はほとんどなかった。
None of the now-existing adverbs was retained, except for a very few already ending in -WISE: the -WISE termination was invariable.
now-existing (現存する) [形] existing now
was retained (残されなかった) [動] be kept or preserved
ending (終わる) [動] come to an end
invariable (不変の) [形] not subject to variation or change
すでに-WISEで終わるごく少数のものを除いて、現存する副詞はどれも残されなかった。-WISEの語尾は不変だった。
The word WELL, for example, was replaced by GOODWISE.
例えば、WELLという言葉はGOODWISEに置き換えられた。

In addition, any word--this again applied in principle to every word in the language--could be negatived by adding the affix UN-, or could be strengthened by the affix PLUS-, or, for still greater emphasis, DOUBLEPLUS-.
in addition (さらに) [副] also; as well; too
negative (否定する) [動] express a denial
affix (接頭辞) [名] a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to alter its meaning or grammatical function
strengthen (強調する) [動] make or become stronger
emphasis (強調) [名] special importance, value, or prominence given to something
さらに、どんな言葉でも、これも原則として言語のすべての言葉に当てはまるが、接頭辞UN-を加えることで否定したり、接頭辞PLUS-を加えることで強調したり、さらに強調したい場合はDOUBLEPLUS-を加えることで強調することができる。
Thus, for example, UNCOLD meant “warm”, while PLUSCOLD and DOUBLEPLUSCOLD meant, respectively, “very cold” and “superlatively cold”.
superlatively (極めて) [副] to the highest degree
例えば、UNCOLDは「暖かい」を意味し、PLUSCOLDとDOUBLEPLUSCOLDはそれぞれ「とても寒い」と「極めて寒い」を意味する。
It was also possible, as in present-day English, to modify the meaning of almost any word by prepositional affixes such as ANTE-, POST-, UP-, DOWN-, etc.
modify (変更する) [動] make partial or minor changes to
preposition (前置詞) [名] a word governing, and usually preceding, a noun or pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element in the clause
ANTE- (ANTE-) [名] a prefix meaning before
POST- (POST-) [名] a prefix meaning after
UP- (UP-) [名] a prefix meaning upward
DOWN- (DOWN-) [名] a prefix meaning downward
現代英語のように、ANTE-、POST-、UP-、DOWN-などの前置詞接頭辞によって、ほとんどすべての単語の意味を変更することも可能だった。
By such methods it was found possible to bring about an enormous diminution of vocabulary.
by such methods (このような方法によって) [副] in this way
bring about (もたらす) [動] cause to happen
このような方法によって、語彙を大幅に減らすことが可能であることがわかった。
Given, for instance, the word GOOD, there was no need for such a word as BAD, since the required meaning was equally well--indeed, better--expressed by UNGOOD.
equally (十分に) [副] in the same way or to the same degree
例えば、GOODという単語があれば、BADという単語は必要なかった。なぜなら、必要な意味はUNGOODで十分に、いや、それ以上に表現できるからだ。
All that was necessary, in any case where two words formed a natural pair of opposites, was to decide which of them to suppress.
all that was necessary (必要なのは) [名] the only thing that was needed
二つの単語が自然に対立するペアを形成している場合、必要なのはどちらを抑制するかを決めることだけだった。
DARK, for example, could be replaced by UNLIGHT, or LIGHT by UNDARK, according to preference.
DARK (DARK) [名] the absence of light
be replaced by (置き換えられる) [動] be substituted for
preference (好み) [名] a greater liking for one alternative over another
例えば、DARKは好みに応じてUNLIGHTに、LIGHTはUNDARKに置き換えることができる。

The second distinguishing mark of Newspeak grammar was its regularity.
distinguishing mark (特徴) [名] a feature that makes something different from other things
regularity (規則性) [名] the quality of being regular
ニュースピーク文法の第二の特徴は規則性である。
Subject to a few exceptions which are mentioned below all inflexions followed the same rules.
subject to (従って) [前] dependent on or conditional on
below (以下) [副] at a lower level or position
以下に述べるいくつかの例外を除いて、すべての語尾変化は同じ規則に従った。
Thus, in all verbs the preterite and the past participle were the same and ended in -ED.
thus (したがって) [副] therefore; consequently
preterite (過去形) [名] a verb tense that expresses an action that occurred in the past
past participle (過去分詞) [名] a form of a verb that functions as an adjective
したがって、すべての動詞において過去形と過去分詞は同じで、-EDで終わる。
The preterite of STEAL was STEALED, the preterite of THINK was THINKED, and so on throughout the language, all such forms as SWAM, GAVE, BROUGHT, SPOKE, TAKEN, etc., being abolished.
STEALの過去形はSTOLEではなくSTEALINGであり、THINKの過去形はTHOUGHTではなくTHINKINGであり、言語全体を通してSWAM、GAVE、BROUGHT、SPOKE、TAKENなどの形はすべて廃止された。
All plurals were made by adding -S or -ES as the case might be.
plural (複数形) [名] a grammatical number referring to more than one
すべての複数形は、場合によって-Sまたは-ESを追加することで作られた。
The plurals OF MAN, OX, LIFE, were MANS, OXES, LIFES.
OX (OX) [名] a castrated adult male bovine
MANS (MANS) [名] the plural of MAN
OXES (OXES) [名] the plural of OX
LIFES (LIFES) [名] the plural of LIFE
MAN、OX、LIFEの複数形はMANS、OXES、LIFESだった。
Comparison of adjectives was invariably made by adding -ER, -EST (GOOD, GOODER, GOODEST), irregular forms and the MORE, MOST formation being suppressed.
irregular (不規則な) [形] not regular
形容詞の比較は常に-ER、-EST(GOOD、GOODER、GOODEST)を追加することで行われ、不規則な形やMORE、MOSTの形は抑制された。

The only classes of words that were still allowed to inflect irregularly were the pronouns, the relatives, the demonstrative adjectives, and the auxiliary verbs.
inflect (活用する) [動] change the form of a word to express a grammatical function
pronoun (代名詞) [名] a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase
relative (関係代名詞) [名] a pronoun that introduces a relative clause
demonstrative adjective (指示形容詞) [名] a determiner that specifies the location of the noun it modifies
auxiliary verb (助動詞) [名] a verb that is used together with the main verb of a sentence to express tense, aspect, mood, or voice
不規則に活用することが許されていたのは、代名詞、関係代名詞、指示形容詞、助動詞だけだった。
All of these followed their ancient usage, except that WHOM had been scrapped as unnecessary, and the SHALL, SHOULD tenses had been dropped, all their uses being covered by WILL and WOULD.
usage (用法) [名] a way of using something
scrap (廃止) [動] get rid of
SHALL (SHALL) [動] will
SHOULD (SHOULD) [動] ought to
tense (時制) [名] a set of forms of a verb that are used to show the time of an action or event
cover (置き換え) [動] be enough for
WILL (WILL) [動] will
WOULD (WOULD) [動] would
これらはすべて古代からの用法に従っていたが、WHOMは不要なものとして廃止され、SHALL、SHOULDの時制は廃止され、その用法はすべてWILLとWOULDに置き換えられた。
There were also certain irregularities in word-formation arising out of the need for rapid and easy speech.
迅速で簡単なスピーチの必要性から生じる言葉の形成にも一定の不規則性があった。
A word which was difficult to utter, or was liable to be incorrectly heard, was held to be ipso facto a bad word;
utter (発音する) [動] make or produce a sound
incorrectly (間違って) [副] in a way that is not correct
ipso facto (それだけで) [副] by that very fact or act
発音しにくい言葉や聞き間違えやすい言葉は、それだけで悪い言葉とされた。
occasionally therefore, for the sake of euphony, extra letters were inserted into a word or an archaic formation was retained.
euphony (音の響き) [名] the quality of being pleasing to the ear
extra (余分な) [形] more than is usual, expected, or necessary
insert (挿入する) [動] put or introduce (something) into something else
formation (造語) [名] the creation of a new word or phrase
そのため、時折、音の響きのために余分な文字が単語に挿入されたり、古風な造語が残されたりした。
But this need made itself felt chiefly in connexion with the B vocabulary.
make itself felt (感じられる) [動] to be perceived or noticed
connexion (関連) [名] a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else
しかし、この必要性は主にB語彙との関連で感じられた。
WHY so great an importance was attached to ease of pronunciation will be made clear later in this essay.
attach (置く) [動] to fasten or join
pronunciation (発音) [名] the way in which a word is pronounced
なぜ発音のしやすさにそれほど大きな重要性が置かれたのかは、この論文の後半で明らかになる。

 THE B VOCABULARY.
B語彙
The B vocabulary consisted of words which had been deliberately constructed for political purposes: words, that is to say, which not only had in every case a political implication, but were intended to impose a desirable mental attitude upon the person using them.
every case (あらゆる場合) [名] all situations
implication (含意) [名] the conclusion that can be drawn from something, although it is not explicitly stated
B語彙は、政治的目的のために意図的に作られた言葉で構成されていた。つまり、あらゆる場合に政治的含意を持つだけでなく、それを使う人に望ましい精神的態度を押し付けることを意図した言葉である。
Without a full understanding of the principles of Ingsoc it was difficult to use these words correctly.
without (なければ) [前] in the absence of
full (完全に) [形] complete or total
イングソックの原則を完全に理解していなければ、これらの言葉を正しく使うのは難しかった。
In some cases they could be translated into Oldspeak, or even into words taken from the A vocabulary, but this usually demanded a long paraphrase and always involved the loss of certain overtones.
paraphrase (言い換え) [名] a restatement of other's words
overtone (倍音) [名] a harmonic with a frequency that is an integral multiple of the fundamental frequency
場合によっては、それらは旧語法に翻訳することも、A語彙から取った言葉に翻訳することもできたが、これには通常、長い言い換えが必要であり、常に特定の倍音の喪失を伴った。
The B words were a sort of verbal shorthand, often packing whole ranges of ideas into a few syllables, and at the same time more accurate and forcible than ordinary language.
B words (B語彙) [名] a kind of words
verbal (口頭の) [形] of or relating to words
shorthand (速記) [名] a method of writing rapidly by substituting symbols or abbreviations for letters, words, or phrases
forcible (強制的な) [形] done by force or violence
B語彙は一種の口頭速記であり、しばしばあらゆる範囲の考えを数音節に詰め込み、同時に通常の言語よりも正確で強制的なものだった。

The B words were in all cases compound words. [Compound words such as SPEAKWRITE, were of course to be found in the A vocabulary, but these were merely convenient abbreviations and had no special ideological colour.]
SPEAKWRITE (スピークライター) [名] a machine that can write down what you say
abbreviation (略語) [名] a shortened form of a word or phrase
B語彙はすべて複合語だった。[スピークライターのような複合語は、もちろんA語彙にも見られたが、これらは単に便利な略語であり、特別なイデオロギー的な色彩はなかった。]
They consisted of two or more words, or portions of words, welded together in an easily pronounceable form.
two or more (二つ以上) [名] two or more than two
weld (溶接する) [動] join together by welding
pronounceable (発音しやすい) [形] able to be pronounced
それらは二つ以上の単語、または単語の一部からなり、発音しやすい形で溶接されていた。
The resulting amalgam was always a noun-verb, and inflected according to the ordinary rules.
amalgam (融合物) [名] a mixture or blend
結果として生じる融合物は常に名詞動詞であり、通常の規則に従って活用された。
To take a single example: the word GOODTHINK, meaning, very roughly, “orthodoxy”, or, if one chose to regard it as a verb, “to think in an orthodox manner”.
take (挙げる) [動] pick up
一例を挙げると、「正統派」という意味の「GOODTHINK」という言葉は、動詞と考えれば「正統派の考え方をする」という意味になる。
This inflected as follows: noun-verb, GOODTHINK; past tense and past participle, GOODTHINKED; present participle, GOOD-THINKING; adjective, GOODTHINKFUL; adverb, GOODTHINKWISE; verbal noun, GOODTHINKER.
past tense (過去形) [名] a verb tense that expresses actions or events that have already happened
present participle (現在分詞) [名] a form of a verb that functions as an adjective
verbal noun (動名詞) [名] a noun that is formed from a verb
これは次のように活用される。名詞動詞、GOODTHINK、過去形と過去分詞、GOODTHINKED、現在分詞、GOOD-THINKING、形容詞、GOODTHINKFUL、副詞、GOODTHINKWISE、動名詞、GOODTHINKER。

The B words were not constructed on any etymological plan.
B word (B語) [名] a word in the B vocabulary
B語は語源的な計画に基づいて作られたものではない。
The words of which they were made up could be any parts of speech, and could be placed in any order and mutilated in any way which made them easy to pronounce while indicating their derivation.
be made up of (構成する) [動] be composed of
order (順番) [名] the arrangement or sequence of things
derivation (派生語) [名] a word that is formed from another word
それらを構成する言葉は、品詞を問わず、どのような順番に並べても、どのような方法で切断しても、発音しやすく、派生語であることを示すことができた。
In the word CRIMETHINK (thoughtcrime), for instance, the THINK came second, whereas in THINKPOL (Thought Police) it came first, and in the latter word POLICE had lost its second syllable.
THINKPOL (思想警察) [名] the police of thought
latter (後者) [形] the second of two things mentioned
例えば、CRIMETHINK(思想犯罪)という言葉では、THINKが2番目に来ているが、THINKPOL(思想警察)では1番目に来ており、後者ではPOLICEの2番目の音節が失われている。
Because of the great difficulty in securing euphony, irregular formations were commoner in the B vocabulary than in the A vocabulary.
great difficulty (非常に難しい) [名] a lot of difficulty
formation (形成) [名] the act of forming or establishing something
commoner (一般的) [名] a person of common birth
美しい響きを確保するのが非常に難しいため、B語彙ではA語彙よりも不規則な形成が一般的だった。
For example, the adjective forms of MINITRUE, MINIPAX, and MINILUV were, respectively, MINITRUTHFUL, MINIPEACEFUL, and MINILOVELY, simply because -TRUEFUL, -PAXFUL, and -LOVEFUL were slightly awkward to pronounce.
respectively (それぞれ) [副] in the order given
awkward (発音しにくい) [形] clumsy or difficult to do or handle
例えば、MINITRUE、MINIPAX、MINILUVの形容詞形は、それぞれMINITRUTHFUL、MINIPEACEFUL、MINILOVELYだったが、これは単に-TRUEFUL、-PAXFUL、-LOVEFULが発音しにくいというだけのことだった。
In principle, however, all B words could inflect, and all inflected in exactly the same way.
しかし、原則として、すべてのB語は活用することができ、すべてが全く同じ方法で活用された。

Some of the B words had highly subtilized meanings, barely intelligible to anyone who had not mastered the language as a whole.

例えば、「タイムズ」の論説にあるOLDTHINKERS UNBELLYFEEL INGSOCのような典型的な文を考えてみよう。

above (上記の) [形] mentioned earlier in the text
まず、上記のニュースピークの文の意味を完全に理解するためには、INGSOCが何を意味しているのかを明確に理解していなければならない。

But the special function of certain Newspeak words, of which OLDTHINK was one, was not so much to express meanings as to destroy them.
しかし、OLDTHINKもその一つであるニュースピークの特定の言葉の特別な機能は、意味を表現することではなく、意味を破壊することだった。
These words, necessarily few in number, had had their meanings extended until they contained within themselves whole batteries of words which, as they were sufficiently covered by a single comprehensive term, could now be scrapped and forgotten.
battery (集合体) [名] a collection of similar things
これらの言葉は、必然的に数が少なく、それ自体の中に言葉の集合体を含み、単一の包括的な用語で十分にカバーされるまで意味が拡張され、今では廃棄され忘れ去られている。

greatest difficulty (最大の困難) [名] the most difficult thing
make sure (明確にする) [動] ensure that something is done or happens

彼はグッドセックスの意味を知っていた。つまり、子供を産むことを唯一の目的とし、女性側に肉体的快楽を与えない、夫婦間の正常な性交のことである。それ以外はすべてセックスクライムだった。

foolproof (絶対確実な) [形] incapable of going wrong or being misused
彼の訓練は彼がこれをするのに適合し、言語は彼にほとんど絶対確実な道具を与え、言葉の質感は、その耳障りな音とイングソックの精神に一致するある種の故意の醜さで、その過程をさらに助けた。

この目的は、「アヒルのようにガーガー鳴く」という意味のニュースピークの言葉「アヒル語」に率直に認められていた。
Like various other words in the B vocabulary, DUCKSPEAK was ambivalent in meaning.
B語彙の他の様々な言葉と同様に、「アヒル語」は意味が両義的だった。

There was, indeed, no word for “Science”, any meaning that it could possibly bear being already sufficiently covered by the word INGSOC.
実際、「科学」という言葉はなく、その言葉が持つ意味はすべてイングソックという言葉で十分にカバーされていた。

From the foregoing account it will be seen that in Newspeak the expression of unorthodox opinions, above a very low level, was well-nigh impossible.
foregoing (以上の) [形] going before in time; previous
well-nigh (ほとんど) [副] very nearly; almost
以上のことから、ニュースピークでは、非常に低いレベルを超えた非正統的な意見の表現は、ほとんど不可能であることがわかるだろう。
It was of course possible to utter heresies of a very crude kind, a species of blasphemy.
crude (粗雑な) [形] in a natural or raw state; not processed or refined
blasphemy (冒涜) [名] the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things
もちろん、非常に粗雑な異端、つまり冒涜の類を発言することは可能だった。
It would have been possible, for example, to say BIG BROTHER IS UNGOOD.
例えば、ビッグ・ブラザーは非善であると言うことは可能だっただろう。
But this statement, which to an orthodox ear merely conveyed a self-evident absurdity, could not have been sustained by reasoned argument, because the necessary words were not available.
reasoned (理性的な) [形] based on or acting on reason
しかし、この発言は、正統派の耳には自明の不条理にしか聞こえないが、必要な言葉がないため、理性的な議論では維持できなかっただろう。
Ideas inimical to Ingsoc could only be entertained in a vague wordless form, and could only be named in very broad terms which lumped together and condemned whole groups of heresies without defining them in doing so.
entertain (受け入れる) [動] consider or have in mind
broad (広い) [形] having a large distance from one side to the other
lump together (ひとまとめにする) [動] put together or consider as a whole
イングソックに敵対する思想は、漠然とした言葉のない形でしか受け入れられず、異端の集団をひとまとめにして非難するような非常に広い言葉でしか名付けることができず、そうすることで異端の集団を定義することもできなかった。
One could, in fact, only use Newspeak for unorthodox purposes by illegitimately translating some of the words back into Oldspeak.
illegitimately (不法に) [副] in an illegitimate manner
実際、ニュースピークを非正統的な目的に使うには、いくつかの単語を不法にオールドスピークに翻訳し直すしかなかった。
For example, ALL MANS ARE EQUAL was a possible Newspeak sentence, but only in the same sense in which ALL MEN ARE REDHAIRED is a possible Oldspeak sentence.
redhaired (赤毛である) [形] having red hair
例えば、すべての人間は平等であるというのはニュースピークの文として可能だが、それはすべての人間が赤毛であるというのがオールドスピークの文として可能であるのと同じ意味においてのみである。
It did not contain a grammatical error, but it expressed a palpable untruth--i.e. that all men are of equal size, weight, or strength.
grammatical error (文法的な誤り) [名] a mistake in grammar
untruth (虚偽) [名] a false statement
equal (同じ) [形] being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value
文法的な誤りは含まれていなかったが、すべての人間が同じ大きさ、重さ、強さであるという明白な虚偽を表現していた。
The concept of political equality no longer existed, and this secondary meaning had accordingly been purged out of the word EQUAL.
secondary (二次的) [形] coming after the first in time or order
accordingly (それに応じて) [副] in a way that is appropriate or suitable
政治的平等という概念はもはや存在せず、この二次的な意味はそれに応じて平等という言葉から一掃されていた。
In 1984, when Oldspeak was still the normal means of communication, the danger theoretically existed that in using Newspeak words one might remember their original meanings.
theoretically (理論的には) [副] in theory; in a theoretical manner
1984年には、オールドスピークがまだ通常のコミュニケーション手段であったため、ニュースピークの言葉を使うことで元の意味を思い出してしまうという危険性が理論的には存在していた。
In practice it was not difficult for any person well grounded in DOUBLETHINK to avoid doing this, but within a couple of generations even the possibility of such a lapse would have vanished.
well grounded (精通した) [形] having a good knowledge of a subject
within a couple of generations (数世代のうちに) [副] within a few generations
lapse (失態) [名] a slight error or mistake
実際には、二重思考に精通した人なら誰でもこれを避けることは難しくなかったが、数世代のうちにそのような失態の可能性すら消えてしまうだろう。
A person growing up with Newspeak as his sole language would no more know that EQUAL had once had the secondary meaning of “politically equal”, or that FREE had once meant “intellectually free”, than for instance, a person who had never heard of chess would be aware of the secondary meanings attaching to QUEEN and ROOK.
queen (クイーン) [名] the wife of a king
rook (ルーク) [名] a chess piece with its top in the shape of a castle
ニュースピークを唯一の言語として育った人は、例えばチェスを聞いたことがない人がクイーンやルークに付随する二次的な意味を知らないように、平等がかつて「政治的に平等」という二次的な意味を持っていたことや、自由がかつて「知的に自由」を意味していたことを知らないだろう。
There would be many crimes and errors which it would be beyond his power to commit, simply because they were nameless and therefore unimaginable.

error (過ち) [名] a mistake
unimaginable (想像できない) [形] too unlikely or too bad to be imagined
単に名前がなくて想像できないという理由だけで、彼が犯すには及ばない多くの犯罪や過ちがあるだろう。

distinguishing characteristic (際立った特徴) [名] a feature that makes something different from other things
more and more (ますます) [副] to a greater and greater extent
pronounced (顕著) [形] very noticeable or obvious

When Oldspeak had been once and for all superseded, the last link with the past would have been severed.
sever (断つ) [動] cut off or separate violently
旧語法が完全に取って代わられると、過去との最後のつながりが断たれるだろう。
History had already been rewritten, but fragments of the literature of the past survived here and there, imperfectly censored, and so long as one retained one's knowledge of Oldspeak it was possible to read them.
imperfectly (不完全に) [副] in a way that is not perfect
censor (検閲する) [動] examine (a book, movie, etc.) officially and suppress unacceptable parts of it
歴史はすでに書き換えられていたが、過去の文学の断片があちこちに残っており、不完全な検閲を受けており、旧語法の知識を保持している限り、それらを読むことができた。
In the future such fragments, even if they chanced to survive, would be unintelligible and untranslatable.
in the future (将来) [副] at a later time
untranslatable (翻訳できない) [形] not able to be translated
将来、そのような断片は、たとえ生き残ったとしても、理解できず、翻訳できないだろう。
It was impossible to translate any passage of Oldspeak into Newspeak unless it either referred to some technical process or some very simple everyday action, or was already orthodox (GOODTHINKFUL would be the Newspeak expression) in tendency.
旧語法の文章をニュースピークに翻訳することは、それが技術的なプロセスや非常に単純な日常の行動に言及しているか、すでに正統派(ニュースピークではGOODTHINKFUL)の傾向にある場合を除いて不可能だった。
In practice this meant that no book written before approximately 1960 could be translated as a whole.
実際には、これは、およそ1960年以前に書かれた本は、全体として翻訳することができないことを意味した。
Pre-revolutionary literature could only be subjected to ideological translation--that is, alteration in sense as well as language.

be subjected to (従う) [動] be exposed to or affected by
革命前の文学は、イデオロギー的な翻訳、つまり言語だけでなく意味の変更にしか従うことができなかった。

destructive (破壊的) [形] causing great and irreparable damage or harm
いかなる形態の政府であれ、これらの目的を破壊するようになったときはいつでも、それを変更または廃止し、新しい政府を設立することは人民の権利である。

It would have been quite impossible to render this into Newspeak while keeping to the sense of the original.
render (翻訳する) [動] translate
original (原文) [名] the first or earliest version of something
これを原文の意味を保ったままニュースピークに翻訳することは全く不可能だっただろう。
The nearest one could come to doing so would be to swallow the whole passage up in the single word CRIMETHINK.
the nearest one (それに近いこと) [名] the closest thing
come to (しようとすれば) [動] start to do something
それに近いことをしようとすれば、この一節全体を犯罪思想という一語に押し込めてしまうことだろう。

a good deal of (多くの) [名] a large amount or number of
be transformed (変換される) [動] change in form, appearance, or character

historical figure (歴史上の人物) [名] a famous person who lived in the past
威信を考慮すると、特定の歴史上の人物の記憶を保存することが望ましいと同時に、彼らの業績をイングソックの哲学に沿ったものにすることが望ましい。
Various writers, such as Shakespeare, Milton, Swift, Byron, Dickens, and some others were therefore in process of translation: when the task had been completed, their original writings, with all else that survived of the literature of the past, would be destroyed.
writer (作家) [名] a person who writes books, stories, or articles as a job or regular occupation
Swift (スウィフト) [名] an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin
